Book Description

The best-selling author of Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks is well know as an explorer of the human mind—a neurologist with a gift for complex, insightful portrayals of people and their conditions. However, he is also a card-carrying member of the American Fern Society, and since childhood has been fascinated by these primitive plants and their ability to survive and adapt in many climates.

Oaxaca Journal is Sacks's spellbinding account of his trip with a group of fellow fern enthusiasts to the beautiful, history-steeped province of Oaxaca, Mexico. Bringing together Sacks's passion for natural history and the richness of human culture with his sharp eye for detail, Oaxaca Journal is a captivating evocation of a place, its plants, its people, and its myriad wonders.

4 out of 5 stars Frank and engaging observations.......2007-05-25

Some chapters are a delight to read- a very frank and engaging take by the author on his observations and thoughts. Other chapters seem a tad self-contained and unbalanced, with way too much attention and emphasis given to a particular observation or subject. Given that it's a jouranl though, one reasonably expects that the jottings penned would have a bit of a subjective emphasis and a slightly idiosyncratic feel.

5 out of 5 stars An unedited journal, straight from the heart.......2007-02-14

After finishing this book, I am convinced that people who develop a passion for something, be it for career, avocation, or hobby, tend to live longer and are more frequently happy, and when they die, they die happy. I bet Oliver Sacks is one of these lucky people! Never cease to be fascinated--that is one key to happiness, and Sacks proves to us just that. Without question he is a Renaissance man, keen to share with us his enthusiasm for his profession (evident from his excellent prose in "The man who mistook..." and his other books) but stays open to ideas and activities that pique his interest, one of which is attending and participating in the New York Botanical Garden's Fern Society and embarking on a weeklong trip to Oaxaca, Mexico with a quirky cast of people whose common interest in ferns and other plants, and birds, transcend professions, economic status, nationality, and personal histories. The fact that the book was based on his travel journals that were written at the time of his trip and were left unedited made the reading experience more poignant and powerful. At the end you feel grateful for people who look "beyond the scenery", who take the time "to stop and smell the flowers", and who see the world almost with the same innocence as children, for they are the ones that make life richer, and perhaps even make the world a better place for the rest of us--and for future generations.

5 out of 5 stars Mispickel! Orpiment! Realgar!.......2005-09-15

Dr. Sacks accompanied a group of botanical friends on a trip to see, catalogue, draw, and take delight in the unparalleled variety of ferns in Oaxaca, Mexico. His resulting journal is a meditation on Zapotec culture, amateur naturalists, edible insects, psychedelics, and above all ferns: seemingly so fragile yet having survived, with little change, for over 300 million years.

According to the author, his "sense of a prehistoric world, of immense spans of time, was first stimulated by ferns and fossil ferns."

For someone like myself who loves both ferns and the writings of Dr. Sacks, this journal is a treasure. It was composed under the blue sky of Oaxaca and filled with an emotion that Dr. Sacks admits is usually foreign to him: joy.

The author is fond of reading natural history journals and he has created a multi-faceted gem of his own, out of observations on lost civilizations, mescal, cochineal insects, plants as rare as horsetails a hundred feet high, and others as common as the bracken fern.

Half of our property in Michigan is covered with bracken ferns and I was always curious as to why insects didn't seem to bother them. According to this author, bracken is regarded as the 'Lucrezia Borgia' of the fern world: "the young fronds release hydrogen cyanide as soon as the insect's mandible tears into them, and if this does not kill or deter the bug, a much crueler poison lies in store. Brackens, more than any other plants, are loaded with hormones called ecdysones, and when these are ingested by insects, they cause uncontrollable molting."

The Romans used bracken on their stable floors because it arrested or perverted the development of fly larvae, although Dr. Sacks doesn't specify how the ancients kept the horses from eating their bedding. Bracken also poisons mammals, and humans who eat too many fiddle-heads over a long period of time are apt to develop stomach cancer.

It is tempting to open up "Oaxaca Journal" and reread an essay equally as vivid as the riff on the 'Lucrezia Borgia of ferns.' There are so many choices. By writing a journal for the National Geographic 'Literary Travel Series,' Dr. Sacks has opened himself up to every conceivable subject under the blazing Mexican sun.

There is indeed joy in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and charming! If you've never thought of visiting Oaxaca ('cause it's not on the coast), maybe now you will!.......2005-06-27

This is a book for Oaxaca lovers and people who could BECOME Oaxaca lovers at the slightest provocation. Oliver Sacks, rummaging around in the history, natural history, geography, geology, anthropology and cuisine of this best-loved part of Mexico, and recording his thoughts, has answered many questions I have had about the place. Just for one example, through reading his book, I discovered that El Tule, the gigantic tree outside of town that everyone visits sooner or later, is a bald cypress and is probably at least 3000 years old. Neither fact is really clear from the information available at the site, perhaps losing something in translation. But the book is filled with such tidbits, and that's not all. Sacks and his fern-loving companions find a lot to enjoy in this old, stucco-walled, stone-paved city and the surrounding countryside. Some books make me wonder (and fear!) what the world is coming to. This book proclaims that all is not lost, since it focuses on things that have always brought hope to mankind, and perhaps represent our ultimate hope: the wonderful natural world and the many GOOD dimensions of the human mind...the many good humans. When a group of such people, intelligent, interested, interestING, and curious--as one reviewer said, exactly the kind of traveling companions one would like!--will take time from their lives and trek all the way to Oaxaca to look at ferns, the world becomes a better place, even if no one else knows about it. Thanks to Mr. Sacks, we do.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting observations .......2004-08-08

This is a book about enthusiasm. A group of amateur enthusiasts (fern lovers, bird lovers, botanists) meet for a 10 day trip exploring the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which offers unusual and rare species due to its mountains and varied climate. This is a journal kept by one scientist/geek of the travels along with the other amateur/geeks. There is probably more about ferns here than you want to know, but it is not overwhelming. What really comes through is the excitement and enthusiasm these people have for something they love. A slight book at a stretched 160 pages, Sacks' journal of the trip has interesting insights into the Mexican culture and history, encounters with gun toting guards at road blocks, observations on children, pottery, nature, geology, love, tradition, an appreciation for enthusiastic people, and an encounter with semi-legendary figure living in the mountains. Early on he explains that most of the official discoveries in botany come from amateurs, and although the book won't make you want to collect ferns, it will encourage you to keep a journal on your next trip.

      Description:
'Extreme' weather events such as droughts, floods, hurricanes, frosts and unusually high or low temperatures can have immense and immediate social, economic and environmental impacts. Investigations of historical extreme weather events, and the nature of the social responses to them, afford insight into the way in which societies have been affected by and have adapted to these events in the past. Historical documents represent invaluable sources to investigate these themes. In this paper we use a range of archival sources to investigate how society in colonial Oaxaca, southern Mexico, was affected by and responded to different types of extreme weather event. Our findings indicate that while drought contributed to antagonism over water supplies between users, it was also used opportunistically to support or challenge cases of water deprivation in legal proceedings. Flooding appears to have been a relatively frequent phenomenon in colonial Oaxaca, but a number of particularly devastating flood events are recorded in the archives. The impact of these events appears to have been determined as much by the timing of the events and level of socio-economic preparedness, as by scale of the flood itself. We then analyse harvest losses due to a range of different climatic phenomena. We highlight how different cross-sections of the community and the local administration responded to these events and suggest that some of the documented harvest losses might have actually been encouraged by high risk agricultural practices.

Caravaggio's Conversion of St. Paul, in the church of Santa Maria Del Popolo, is a deathless masterpiece. People of all ages, from all countries of the world, stand in front of it in silent awe. Some of them weep. This is what the Michelin guide has to say about this painting: "The effect of the divine light illuminating St. Paul on the road to Damascus should have been sublime but it falls first of all on the hourse, which is out of proportion, before touching the foreshadowed figure of the saint." Oh, excuse me, Michelin man, it's a shame you weren't around in the 17th century so you could give Caravaggion lessons in proportion! Then there's the column of Marcus Aurelius, which as been transfixing travelers to Rome for nigh on two thousand years now: "The overall appearance is spoiled by the lack of entasis two-thirds of the way up the shaft, which would have avoided the impression of concavity." Spoiled! And here I was, along with maybe a hundred million people before me, thinking the spiraling reliefs of victory and disaster were something pretty damn special and reasonably unspoiled to see. And please forgive me for not having any idea what the heck "entasis" means. The star rating system of this guide will only lead you to the places you already knew you should go and see--the guide gives one or no stars to places that are not only magnificent, but which will be, even on a July afternoon, cool, silent and empty of the multitudes. The Rough Guide to Rome is a much better book. Or just follow your nose, your eyes and your heart--in the Eternal City, they can't steer you wrong.

                  4 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2006-10-25

I've browsed and borrowed several guidebooks, and the ones I relied on for taking with me and walking around with (as opposed to pre-trip research) were Fodor's, and Michelin's Green Guide for Rome. The latter has no restaurant or hotel information, but excellent historical and cultural notes--more than some people want, perhaps. My only criticism of it is that the index is not good: some listings are under the Latin or Italian names, (many churches are found under the listing "chiesa" for example),some are under the English translation names, and some important topics or sites are not actually listed in the index at all, but they do appear in the book. Topics are well-organized into walking itineraries.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched and organized, compact size that travels well.......2006-06-07

I have used the Michelin Green Guides on many trips to Italy. They have always provided accurate information in an easy to use format. I particularly like that they are small enough to pack in a suit easily. This might not sound like much to you. But I am a one carry-on suitcase kind of girl, so I don't have much room to spare for lots of travel guides. I always have at least one Michelin Green Guide in my suitcase for each new adventure.

The writers do a nice job of provided walking directions through Rome to maximize your sightseeing opportunities. I love to walk around Rome. It is such a beautiful city that can only be truly appreciated up close. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The street are very uneven and unless you have gel inserts in your hard soles shoes you feet might give out before you do. I have been known to walk 10 miles a day in Rome without trying to. It is very easy to get carried away and just want to see more.

Be sure to check out a few of the outdoor markets that are outlined in the book. These are so much fun. I like them almost as much as the museums.

The floorplans of the museums that are provided are very useful and I would recommend copying those before you leave to have with you if you don't plan to take the book.

One overlooked sight in Rome that I love is the Baths of Caracalla. If you are there in summer check to see if they are having the outdoor concerts at night, they are worth attending. Even without the concerts the scope of the Baths is worth seeing. It is fascinating what the Romans were able to accomplish in AD 212.

I would highly recommend the Michelin Green Guide to Rome to anyone that is planning a trip to Rome, be it their first trip or their tenth.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great guide to the historical/cultural sights.......2004-03-18

I took this book on a recent 8-day trip to Rome. It is an outstanding guide to the historical/cultural sights, probably the best in print if you're limiting yourself to one.

The city is divided into about 15 regions. For each, the book lays out a walking tour complete with an explicit map. Quite a bit of very helpful info is provided for each sight.

If you have a lot less than 8 days, the book provides a rating of 1 to 3 stars for each sight, so you can make a bee-line to the 3 star sights and skip the walking tours.

The book is weak on "the contemporary scene", bus routes, shopping, restaurants, and hotels. The focus is definitely on the cultural and historical sights. I recommend you also get a copy of Fodors or Frommers and xerox the chapters on these important practicalities. Great dining experiences can add a lot to the trip; Rome has plenty of mediocre tourist traps.

Another book similar in scope and emphasis is "Blue Guide Rome" by Alta Macadam. It's also excellent. This author typically says a little more about each sight than does Michelin, but the city is divided into about 30 walking tours instead of 15 and no map is provided for the individual walks. If you don't mind carrying a small library, and I don't, take this along too and whip it out at the major sights to get an insightful second opinion.

A big issue in sightseeing Ancient Rome is that there is usually relatively little left to look at, as the sites were used as quarries for more than a thousand years. Neither this Michelin Guide nor the Blue Guide provides sketches of reconstructions of the Ancient sites, and hence your imagination doesn't have much to go on. To rectify this, I recommend whipping out the "Oxford Archeological Guide to Rome" by Amanda Claridge, probably the best guide in English on Ancient Rome, but this book barely mentions any site newer than 500 AD and is not suitable as a general guide.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money and don't buy this horrible guide.......2002-05-29

I bought this book but didn't have time to read it until I was on the plane -- my mistake in buying it in the first place -- there are so many other great guides that do such a better job than this ridiculous guide -- the maps are horrible, the entire book is superficial in it's descriptions and the restaurants it recommends were all recommended by other guides -- as if they had plagarized the lists of places to go. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars Michelin Green Guide Rome a Must Have!.......2000-06-14

After living overseas for 6 years I have traveled far and wide. I have purchased several other guide book brands (Fodors, Eyewitness, Knopf), and while they have pretty pictures, they lack substance. If you are visiting Rome and want to know the history and small details The Green Guide is an absolute must. It's divided into logical catagories (take the time to acquaint yourself with the set-up of the book - you'll be glad you did) that are alphabetically listed. Sights are rated one, two and three stars and I've found that most ratings are fairly accurate. There are small, detailed maps in each section. You can also purchase a very detailed map book of Rome by Michelin - it's wonderful!

The book is lighter than most of the current popular travel guides and chock full of great information. Michelin is always the guide I reach for once I'm disgusted with any other guide book - no matter where I'm visiting!

                  Bon Voyage!

A fantastic guide to the principal attractions of this immense city. The suggested itineraries and maps are very useful, though their estimated lengths are very generous. All listed attractions have notes on historical relevance, architecture, notable sculpture etc. All very useful and informative. Due to the nature of tourist sites, the opening hours and admission prices are often inaccurate, but overall one of the most useful guides to the city.

Very good resource of background information about the sites. Some information about history and art (you might want a dedicated history book if you are really serious about it). Provides a welcomed change from all the guides spending more time descibing restourants instead of museums
