My wife and I checked almost every India travel guide book that is sold in the USA. We took three travel guides with us to India but the footpring was the only one to return.

Its descriptions aids the reader in visting a site. It guides you as a (semi) independent travel in exploring the sites and how to navigate through them. Other travel guides have similar descriptions of the sites, but they do not tell the travelar where to go. This works fine if you have a guide (but then why bother with a travel guide book), but is not helpful as an independent travelar.

It also had great pre-prep suggestions on who to contact for booking your independent trip.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book.......2007-02-09

The Footprint series are great for getting background and cultural information about the destinations. It provides detailed information about the hot places to be, where to avoid and a true insiders guide to each city. This is a lot more detailed and seemingly more accurate than the Lonely Planet guides.

The one thing it lacks is details of hotels and restaurants. It simply lists them without reviews or justified ratings. My suggestion: travel with two books. Get the Lonley Planet for hotels and restaurants. Get the Footprint series for real life details of your destination.

One example: Footprint gives information like [paraphrasing] 'the registered guides are only allowed on the left side of the entrance of the fort; the local, but frequently better guides, stay on the right'. Details like that make you feel confident in your travels.

1 out of 5 stars where is Gujarat?.......2007-02-09

I bought the book, two day delivery, because I am going to Gujarat in ten days. I went through the book, looked through the index, etc., but aside from a piece on the map, could not find material on Gugarat. My invoice and your title clearly says Footprint Rajasthan (Footprint Rajasthan and Gujarat Handbook) by Matt Barrett. The title on the book is Footprint Rajasthan by Matt Barrett.

Needless to say, I'm very disappointed. I was going to give it a 3 because the quality of the book is good, but because I was looking for Gujarat and felt this was all very misleading, I'm giving it a one, since there's no zero.

                        4 out of 5 stars good choice.......2006-11-03

The guidebook is useful and detailed. It does not contain a lot of practical information, but the cultural background is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars To India and back!.......2007-03-26

I spent several weeks in 2004 traveling through India using only this guide. The hotel listings were very helpful and even a relative that accompanied me on my travels (who is a cosmopolitan native) was impressed at the hotels we found for very reasonable rates and convenient locations. I always asked to view the room before checking in because my standards vary from their standards, but this book gave me a great headstart on which hotels to visit. If I didn't agree with their recommendation, I always found a similar hotel. It is a bit thin on the history and culture, for which I suggest a Fodor's.

1 out of 5 stars better to buy another guidebook.......2005-04-17

i am in india right now and am so thankful that i have also the rough guide and do wish i had a lonely planet, not footprint. this book is lacking: not enough hotel listings with prices, restaurants with prices, cost of transportation, misses details of "before you go"/"things a traveller must know", nor does it give enough information about the locations it covers - better to buy lonely planet and the rough guide.

                        5 out of 5 stars Truly Top-Notch.......2005-01-31

I spent two months backpacking through India in the summer of 2003, and the Footprint guide was tremendous. I also brought the Rough Guide to India, but Footprint was much more useful (though both blew away Lonely Planet!).

There is great coverage of smaller towns in all regions of the country, something that is invaluable if you're spending an extended period of time in the country. Almost every time I'd be overnighting in some obscure town as part of a bus journey, I'd at least find a paragraph or two, which saved the day more than once.

The maps are great. The most readable I've seen in any guidebook. The detailed maps of the whole country in the back were extremely useful.

The background section was also the most in-depth I've seen among India guidebooks. Very good.

All in all, this is definitely the best guidebook to use for India. One of the biggest benefits of it though, is that it isn't very popular. If Lonely Planet says a place is cheap, you can guarantee they've quadrupled their price since then. Footprint India really helps you stay off the beaten tourist path... I rarely had encounters with other travellers... almost all of my time was spent with locals, and the Footprint guide is definitely geared towards that. Most of the hotels reviewed aren't backpacker-focused (though those are there), but are mostly used by locals travelling for various reasons.

                        Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Forget Lonely Planet - this is the one necessary guide .......2005-01-19

This guide really has everything you need, practical and educational - and in a very practical little package to boot (hard cover, small size, paper-thin pages to avoid too much bulk). The authors' biographies are revealing: one of them is a bona fide expert, a professor of South Asian Geography at the School of Oriental and African Studies. It's that kind of company you need to get a grip on a country like India. And you usually don't get it - most guidebooks are written by people who are simply more experienced in travel than your average joe, but have no in-depth knowledge of the country.

What it lacks, compared to Lonely Planet/Rough Guides is a chummy, get-a-load-of-this tone. Unadorned information me seem dry to some, but to others it is a relief compared to guides whose authors assume you share their prejudices. For instance, hotel listings are terse. A typical entry reads: "Category E, 130 rooms, some A/C (better rm on upper floor),restaurant (Indian veg.) rec; reasonably clean but gets crowded and noisy"

It's worth looking through other guidebooks if you want restaurant and hotel listings fleshed out for you. But if you only carry one guidebook to India, let it be this one.

                        5 out of 5 stars Highly Useful.......2004-07-09

I really enjoyed this book and found it to be indespensible during two trips to Pakistan in the Summers of 03 and 04. A little skimpy on photos and the prices were outdated (it has not been updated since 1998 I wish they would too). other than that it was/is the best on the market, far more engaging and extensive than Lonely Planet. I see Footprint is expected to release a Guide to the Northern Areas. Although I welcome this I think far too many tourists neglect the four provinces down country. This is really where the guide book shines for it reveals so much about the majority of the country that other books neglect or skim over.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and very thorough guide.......2002-05-13

While in pursuit if my passion of travel, I have had the chance to use several types of guides, but never have I enjoyed reading any guide as this one. Very detailed, yet simply arranged, and excellent recommendations. Very accurate trekking information is also included in it, along with the typical "touristy" material. Maps could use a little more detail, as I saw it. Prices and other recommendations were excellent! Awesome job!

If anyone is going to Pakistan, I would highly suggest getting this book. There are so many things that I have never known even though I was there for several months.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further for the best guidebook !.......1999-09-23

Pakistan is a fascinating and unfairly under-rated country. It certainly is one of the poorest in the world but its people are the most welcoming you will ever meet and the scenery is enthralling. I promised myself I'll keep returning to Pakistan every year since my first discovery trip (1998). Look no further for the best guidebook to Pakistan. This new edition is VERY detailed and informative and has even succeeded in improving on the already brilliant previous edition. In my opinion, Lonely Planet's updated 1998 edition is not bad either but does not compare. Have a wonderful journey ! And please, if you go to Lahore, don't miss the beautiful Wazir Khan mosque !

Its practical tips are very true and the historical background is concentrated, without flooding you with too much information. I can highly recommend the guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive and updated of all Tibet guidebooks.......2005-02-07

This book provides a more profound insight into Tibet for those interested in Tibetan culture, trekking and adventure travel, than the others that are on the market. It is the most comprehensive guide- uniquely including the vast eastern regions of Kham, Amdo and Gyarong, as well as Ngari and Utsang. The book avoids the traditional steriotypes of Tibet and includes much information directly translated from original Tibetan sources as well as data derived from more than 50 fieldwork expeditions and trips in Tibet. The author, Dr Gyurme Dorje, is a Tibetologist, who has been involved in Tibetan studies for over 30 years, and has authored several books on diverse aspects of Tibetan culture. His handbook has the advantage of being continuously updated.

3 out of 5 stars An indispensable guidebook with great scope for improvement.......1999-11-25

Tibet Handbook with Bhutan, by Gyurme Dorje (Footprint Handbooks, Bath, England, 2nd edition 1999, 952pp plus maps).

The greatest strength of this book is that it is the only guidebook to give a substantial account of all parts of the Tibetan plateau, both inside and outside the so-called Tibetan Autonomous Region. For that reason it is, despite its conspicuous faults, indispensable for the traveller to Tibet whose itinerary extends beyond the familiar lands of central Tibet. The book is not to be confused with "Tibet Handbook" by Victor Chan.

"Tibet Handbook with Bhutan" is a guide to all Tibetan regions governed by the People's Republic of China, with additional chapters on Bhutan and the Kathmandu valley of Nepal. It would have been useful to include the Tibetan borderlands in Nepal and north-west India Ä although it is no doubt expedient politically to imply that no part of Tibet lies outside the territory China governs.

At 650 grams, the new edition (paperback) is almost twice the weight of the first, hardback, edition - a curious development for a travel guidebook.

The book includes useful background information about Tibetan religion, iconography and history. The bulk of the book deals with the regions of the Tibetan plateau by devoting a section to each one of the 158 counties into which the People's Republic of China divides it. This approach turns out to be surprisingly intelligible.

There is extensive information about religious places, and buildings and their contents. There is much less information about other matters such as topography, agriculture, educational facilities, military establishments, and political structures. It is as though, in a way, those things belong to a different Tibet.

The book enjoys the benefit of the author's experience as a scholar and tour guide. It also suffers the limitations of that experience, and is often short on practical details for the independent traveller. It is written in a concise style that betrays no trace of personality.

The second edition has been expanded considerably, mainly with valuable information about counties where information in the first edition was inadequate. Unfortunately, the author has not taken the opportunity to check the much more extensive material carried over from the first edition. If he would make time to do that, he would find innumerable internal contradictions within the text and between the text and the often wildly inaccurate small county maps. Almost any numeral, particularly distances, should be treated with suspicion. The relationship between the county population figures and those in the 1996 edition show impossible fluctuations; they go unremarked, but indicate that at least one of the sets of figures is worthless, and perhaps both. The inherent confusion in the existence of both Tibetan and Chinese names for the same places demands a consistency of usage in a guidebook which this one does not quite manage to attain.

An indispensable book, with the scope to become much better.
