Book Description
Introducing the easiest and most enjoyable way for parents to encourage their children to read! Recently selected among the Most Outstanding Children's Books of 1998 by the Parent Council and one of the 100 Best Children's Products of 1998, We Both Read is the firs series of books to invite parents and children to share the reading of a book by taking turns reading aloud. Parents read the more sophisticated text on the left-hand pages and the children read the right-hand pages, which have been written at one of three early reading levels. Developed with reading education specialists, this delightful new series brings parents and children together for a wonderful new reading experience and faster reading development!
About this Book: Explore the mystery and wonder of the tropical rain forest! Travel around the equator to Africa, Asia, and South America discovering the world's most fascinating plant and animal life. Trees that give us rubber and chocolate, lizards that change color, and a cat that can fish with its tail are just some of the amazing species that you'll find in the dense foliage of the rain forest. Captivating photographs, along with compelling text, make this book an exciting adventure and a great learning experience.
Customer Reviews:
learn all about the rain forest together.......2005-01-11
This is a great rain forest book. It tells us about various animals that live in the rain forest such as marmosets, lemurs, and capybaras. It also tells us that some of the rain forest is being destroyed and that is not good. Many life saving plants can be found in the rain forest. This book tells us that it's important to take a stand against the deforestation.
This book is one of the We Both Read series where more detailed reading is on the left side of the page for the parent to read and the child's page on the right has only two or three words in larger type.
I would recommend this book for children and parents to read together. The full color photos of the rain forest animals are great. There is a lot to learn in this short book.
Kindergarten Rainforest Theme.......2004-03-06
I decided to teach a rainforest theme in Kindergarten, what an awesome book, the kids love the pictures and can't wait to find out about the different animals. I generally read the child's side, (this is set up for adult and child)to the class so I do not lose them and they LOVE IT. I just wish I could find more for this age.
Another great book for the early reader!.......2001-05-29
I have read several books in this series with my 4 year old daughter. She loves taking turns reading the pages. The books hold her attention much more than other beginning reader books that we have found.
Customer Reviews:
an expression of hope.......2001-01-24
In an ever-evolving world society, the aim of expanding cultural participation is a fundamental expression of hope. American arts and humanities publications and teaching have been making headway in this project, encouraging children to attend and honor their own family and ethnic traditions and strengths, thoughtfully sharing these with others, enriching the sum of human experience and awareness beyond as well as within the dominant culture. The natural sciences are making a later but authentic entry to the field.
Gabriell DeBear Paye's book `Cultural Uses of Plants, a guide to learning about ethnobotany' is a wonderful example of the maturing of the multi-cultural approach in the context of a stringent scientific curriculum. The text is careful, clear, practical, and friendly. While this is certainly a book for schools and teachers, it should interest many parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, great aunts and great uncles as well. It invites the integration of family discussion and wisdom with school accomplishment. Science projects designed on such a collaborative foundation are likely to be very well made!

Book Description
"Every body perseveres in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line, except in so far as it is compelled to change that state by impressed forces." -Issac Newton, Principia (First Law of Motion)
In other words, students in grades 4-8 (bodies in a state of rest) need lots of hands-on activities (impressed forces) to learn (compelling change)!
All the activities in this book are based upon science principles, many of which are explained by Newton's laws. The spirit of Sir Issac is present on the pages of this book offering explanation, advice, additional information and encouragement. Children will engage in corn seed olympics, experiment with leaves, set plants in motion, investigate pollen and more. Many labs include data tables and background information. An answer key is provided.
This innovative collection of Science Action Labs provides a multitude of material for your students. Choose some activities to animate your class demonstrations, convert some to hands-on labs for the entire class or develop some for individual projects or reports. You'll find that each Science Action Lab is designed to encourage your students to THINK and SOLVE PROBLEMS and, after all, isn't that what science is all about?
Newton would approve.

Fun, easy crafts for young animal lovers.......2007-01-11
This is a perfect book for young children who are interested in animals and nature. Each section has information about a particular animal and its habitat along with a fun craft project based on that habitat. The craft projects are simple and fast, and the kids can do many of the steps themselves. Most of the materials required are objects you would already have in your house.

OUTSTANDING BOOK FOR ALL AGES.......2000-08-04
The Changing Seasons explains why there are different seasons in a very simple, elegant way. The experiments are fun and easy to do. I will be using this book to explain seasons to my elemantary grade students. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand why we have seasons.
Book Description
Offers all that the visitor with a concern for beauty and for leisurely sight-seeing will require. FINANCIAL TIMES The best guide book I have ever encountered... and a book I found it impossible not to read from beginning to end. OBSERVERThere are few pleasanter ways of passing a summer's evening than sitting over a cup of coffee, and perhaps a glass of Aurum, in the Piazza San Marco. It is especially agreeable on those nights when the Venetian city band thunders away at some throbbingly romantic piece... And all the while the younger inhabitants parade around the square, chattering, flirting, quarrelling and staring at their visitors with that same unwinking gaze that Venetians have turned on their guests for the past five centuries. The facade of San Marco closes the scene in a glitter of golden mosaic and a bubbling of cupolas, while the great thick red campanile stretches up into the warm mothy darkness of the summer sky. Hugh Honour, it is clear, knows Venice exceptionally well and catches the rhythms of the city's life with unerring skill. His guide, with its winning blend of evocative detail and precise information, spurs the reader to investigate Venice's wonders: Piazza San Marco is only the beginning of a journey into the heart of Venice and its history.
Customer Reviews:
The GREATEST Guidebook for Venice EVER.......2005-09-29
I received this guidebook as a gift in 1992, and wandered all over Venice, reading it for 10 days. It's one of the finest guidebooks I've ever read, with helpful maps, organized by neighborhoods, and much, much information that will make your trip to Venice, even richer than you expected it would be.
Venice is about mystery, it's about people, and it's about finding yourself. You'll do that with this book.
Book Description
Bringing to life Florence's glorious history in first-hand accounts.
Reactions to Venice have been, throughout the ages, astonishingly different. Henry James wrote passionately: "You desire to embrace it, to caress it, to possess it..." whereas Mark Twain found St. Mark's "so ugly...Propped on its long row of thick-legged columns, its back knobbed with domes, it seem like a vast, warty bug taking a medieval walk." In this dazzling anthology, James and Twain along with the writings of Byron, Goethe, Wagner, Casanova, Jan Morris, Robert Browning, and Horace Walpole, among many others, are all featured. Ranging from the days of the sixth century, when the early lagoon-dwellers lived "like sea-birds, in huts built on heaps of osiers" to the exquisite city of eighteenth-century revelers and nineteenth-century art lovers-the city's many different guises are revealed as its inhabitants and visitors saw them.
This favorite volume from the Traveller's Companion series also contains maps, engravings, and notes on history, art and architecture, and everyday city life. Highly entertaining and informative.
Customer Reviews:
A colorful anthology.......2007-09-26
I bought this anthology in the months prior to a trip to Venice, after reading editor John Julius Norwich's excellent "A History of Venice", to which it makes a terrific companion volume. These first-hand historical accounts present a colorful review of divergent viewpoints on "La Serinissima", from its distant origins in the Dark Ages up through the 20th century.
Though billed as a "traveller's companion", this is not a guide book in any sense of the phrase; rather, it serves to give one a sense of the history and character of the city and its most prominent features through letters, journals, and essays spanning the nearly 1400 years of its existence. Amongst the commentators are humorists like Mark Twain, great eccentrics like Thomas Coryat, litterateurs such as Henry James and aesthetes like John Ruskin -- and their contrasting views create a multifaceted portrait of this unique city, full of surprises and compulsively readable.
For those who want a sense of the hidden history and culture under the dazzling surface of Venice, who want to more deeply appreciate the city and its sights while experiencing them, this collection is highly recommended.
This should be required reader for any visitor to Venice!.......2007-03-11
Lord Norwich is a consumate storyteller with an incredible ability to weave various sources of information into a compelling narrative--or in this case, a serious of anecdotes. I can hardly recommend this highly enough. His choices of material are brilliant, his narration masterful, and the overall sense of place perfectly fitted to the Most Serene Republic.
Also not to miss is his A History of Venice and Paradise of Cities: Venice In the 19th Century. The letters written by Euphemia Ruskin inspired several characters in my second novel!
Venice for Pleasure is useful for the traveler or writer, as well, as is Jan Morris' The World of Venice.

Book Description
This rich and fascinating celebration of Venice presents a series of unconventional impressions of the heart of Venice and its dazzling spectrum of people. With a wealth of eyewitness accounts and comments by its famous visitors, including Joseph Brodsky, Benjamin Disraeli, Thomas Mann, Marcel Proust, Jean-Paul Sartre, Mark Twain, and Orson Welles, this book is a thrilling evocation of Europe's capital of color. It examines the dark byways of the city's brutal history, the brilliance of Venetian painting, sumptuous architecture and embellishments, many arts—from glass blowing and boatbuilding to velvet—courtesans, fashions, food, music, politics, crumbling ruins and abandoned gardens, the ghetto, eccentrics, and working people.
