    Book Description

Fascinated by the sticking ability of the burs from wild plants, Swiss engineer, George de Mestral, uncovered the secret of the microscopic hooked tips that clung tightly to the loops in clothes and animal hair. His efforts to imitate nature's design culminated in the development of Velcro hook and loop tape. The story of the invention of Velcro is combined with a look at nature's perfect fastening system.

        Book Description

Readers can see how the same object, event, or activity can be viewed in two different ways, both of them true. The rain that spoils the family's picnic helps crops grow, and autumn leaves that are boring to rake are fun to jump on. "Wolff's verse sings right along, drawing comparisons until readers will be ready to jump in with their own dual observations. . . . Jolly." -- Kirkus Reviews

        Book Description

Seeds, as small and unobtrusive as they seem, are an essential part of the life cycle of plants. In addition, they are useful for indentification of plants and, in fact, are often superior for that purpose that other parts of a plant.

That's because seeds have distinctive characteristics, tend to outlast all other plant parts, and vary little within a species--unlike other parts such as leaves.

Since weeds interfere with the growth, harvesting, and quality of crops, Linda Davis says, the ability to identify weed seeds before they are indavertently planted affords an economic advantage. Other weed-control measures--herbicides and mechanical removal of unwanted plants--are enormously costly in comparison.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 600 photographs and drawings, this handbook provides information about the seeds of 280 species of weedy plants of the Great Plains, including ones commonly found in crops, rangeland, lawns, and along roadsides.

This is the only book available that covers a large number of Great Plains plants. For each species it provides a high-quality color photograph showing minute details, a black-and-white life-size silhouette (against which actual seeds can be compared), and a full description. An easy-to-use set of finding lists facilitates identification of unknown seeds. Both scientific and common names are used throughout, and an illustrated glossary clarifies technical terms.

this book has been instrumental in helping me identify six new weed seeds i previously didn't know.this book has been very helpful to me being in the grain export buisness.if you are into weeds this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A must, photographs of 280 seeds in color.......1998-07-28

For those of us who are either professionals, amateurs, or curious people. As greater and greater interest grows in discovering and growing native grasses and forbs - this book becomes more valuable. No key is required , and even if you don't know the species, it is possible to get a genus.

Thes book should entice readers to start their own seed identification collection. With a 10 power hand lens one can become an expert in an old but newly emerging area of interest.

Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.

The one-dimensional Amsterdam of tulips, wooden shoes, and 17th-century architecture is the stuff of many a standard guidebook, but with its booming economy, legalized prostitution, and tolerant attitude toward recreational drug use, the city is much more than that. For savvy travelers who want to fully experience the place as the locals live it, Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Amsterdam, 6th Edition is the way to go, offering the lowdown on this hip, cultivated city, where old and new sunnily coexist. You'll discover the proper way to knock back genever (Dutch gin--the potent national spirit), why Amsterdam is considered the Gay Capital of Europe, plus the inside scoop on the red-light district, complete with advice and warnings.

This is not a typical travel book with all the standard info you'd find. It's best to be a supplement book (in conjunction to a "standard" one) providing info only the locals know-the un-offical stories. Excellent book.

Just got back from Amsterdam and had taken this book (along with others) with me. This book was far from the helpful book I had been hoping. It wasn't 'irreverent' really and seemed to miss a lot of good information. It also wasn't presented very well.

                  I do not recommend this...

It's all gezellig to Amsterdammers. Frommer's Amsterdam gives you insider tips on the best museums, big and small; the best antique shops in the Spiegelgracht quarter; the best restaurants for French, modern Dutch, or the Indonesian feast rijsttafel walking tours and biking tours along the Golden Age Canal and the Amstel River; plus information for side trips to Rotterdam, The Hague, Gouda, and other cities.

You'll also find candid reviews of a huge selection of accommodations in all price ranges, from romantic B&Bs to family-friendly hotels. Plus you'll get the latest trip-planning advice on everything from bargain airfares to customs requirements, money-saving tips, and a complete shopper's guide. You'll even get a free color fold-out map, a Dutch vocabulary list, and an online directory that makes trip-planning a snap!

3 out of 5 stars Not up to Frommer's usual quality.......2005-07-21

We travel a lot and always get a Frommer's Guide the first time we visit a new place. In general these guides are full of useful information, accurate maps and excellent sight-seeing suggestions and lists of restaurants. We have found this to be true of the Frommer's Guides to France, Provence, Germany, London, Spain and Norway.

This Amsterdam guide did not live up to our expectations. It's not that the book is "terrible", but we consistently found inaccuracies and, as others have said here, were often left wondering if the author George McDonald actually ate at the restaurants he recommends. One could reasonably suspect that the appearance of some of these restaurants' names in the guide were paid endorsements. (A particular recommendation for Indonesian food, which one can find in abundance in Amsterdam, was especially suspicious, as it was overpriced and nowhere near the quality of other restaurants we visited).

We always like to walk when visiting a city, and this Amsterdam Guide contains several long walking tours. We tried almost all of them, and invariably gave up and headed in our own direction. The maps provided with the walking tours had inaccuracies serious enough to really throw us off (street names off by an entire block), and included ridiculous "points of interest" -- in one case he sends you off to see the site of a historic orphanage, when in fact the orphanage is gone and now replaced by the new Ballet house, an unattractive steel and glass monstrosity. He even goes so far as to explain that the orphanage "used" to stand there. What's the point? Does Mr. McDonald really not think that Amsterdam has enough existing points-of-interest that he has to send us off to the ones that aren't there anymore?

Further, the tear-out folding map that comes with the book contains little more than street names -- there are inexplicably no references to points-of-interest mentioned in the book, or even major landmarks.

3 out of 5 stars A good, basic travel guide.......2002-11-01

I just took this book to Amsterdam. I found it to be very helpful. The books features maps dedicated to a single subject (such as a restaurant map, a hotel map, etc.). We used these extensively. The Frommer's Irreverent Guides have more candid and entertaining reviews (including information on coffeeshops, which this book essentially skips), but this book is an excellent one-stop source of travel information. If you're only bringing one guide to Amsterdam, this one will do the job well. If you can pack two, bring along the Irreverent Guide (or something similarly hip).

                  2 out of 5 stars A real disappointment........1998-11-11

I bought this book for my first trip to Amsterdam. The basic info is sound but there were some problems. The most annoying is that key parts of maps end up in the middle (binding) making them difficult to read. The restaurant reviews were in inaccurate and left the reader wondering whether anyone from Frommers had been in the restaurant. In summary the book is OK but there are better ones on the market.

We'll point you to the best Dutch diningand steer you away from tourist traps you should avoid. We'll tell you where to stay if you want canal house coziness or a non-stop party hotel in the red-light district; where to buy diamonds, club gear, and clogs; and which cafes, tap houses, and smoke shops the locals love.

3 out of 5 stars Might as well take the front door.......2000-08-27

Given Amsterdam's seedier side, you would think this Back Door Guide would help you sift through all the shops and scenes to give you some cool spots. But the guide was sorely lacking in this department. While giving diverse offerings for daytime fare, the book skimped on the nighttime activities, only listing a few 'highlights,' which were probably in the front door guide anyway. References to the seedier side were left at that - only references. No recommendations. Perhaps their back door guide to a more sedate town like Brussels helps you find the hidden jewel at nights, but this back door offering might have well just said to wander around and go in what looks appealing. Thanks for the help.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read; Great Information.......2000-02-22

My husband and I bought both the Amsterdam and the London versions as we planned our honeymoon. What a great read! Reading the Irreverent Guide further fueled our excitement about Amsterdam and our trip and we found the city to be true to the book's description.

The style of the books are very easy to read, with useful information and a slightly sarcastic, biting tone. The information is presented in a funny manner and it definitely differs from the dry-as-a-bone descriptives that classify so many travel books. Because the book is written based on information from locals, and even partially by locals themselves, this travel guide has more of a travelogue feel than a travel guide feel, which definitely appeals to me. It offers good information about how to really *see* a city or a place the way its seen by people who live there, even if you are only there for a few days.

We used the Amsterdam guide to find our hotel, look up attractions, learn enough about the culture so that we weren't annoyed with the slow wait service, and many other things. We did not have a single negative experience in Amsterdam from following any of the book's recommendations.

                      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......1999-08-17

I have to agree with the review below - there is nothing alternative about this guide. And the writer is so sarcastic about some of the places reviewed, that I wonder why they were in the book at all.

1 out of 5 stars The Snooty Guide.......1999-03-12

It seems that Frommer's just doesn't get it. The reason alternative guides like Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide, etc. have been so popular in the past decade is that some travelers don't want to pay a lot of money to stay in a bland upscale hotel or eat in snobbish restaurants, let alone visit overpriced tourist traps. They want to go native as much as possible so they can really see what's unique about a place. The focus of this guide, on the other hand, seems to be mainly sneering at attractions and accommodations that aren't quite tasteful enough for the discriminating consumer. What's left over (and there isn't much) is the usual old-school guidebook round of outrageously priced hotels, fussy restaurants, and posh boutiques. Contrary to its title, the guide is far too reverent toward all things expensive. Of course anyone can stay anywhere in comfort and style if they spend enough money. If you can afford to follow the suggestions in this book, you already know where to go and you don't need to buy it.

The bottom line: if you want catty gossip, buy a glossy magazine. If you want a practical guide with an irreverent attitude, get yourself a nice Rough Guide or Let's Go. But whatever you do, don't buy this book.

                      4 out of 5 stars A must-read for the party hearty crowd.......1999-01-28

This guide is not your typical boring tourist drivel. It gives you the lowdown on A'dam: what's the deal with pot and hash at the coffee houses, about the redlight district, cool places to stay, where to eat and where to avoid, etc. It's a light, fast read that I did in one sitting. I decided on my hotel and mapped out some things I don't want to miss. The weak parts of the book concern the areas that I am going back to A'dam for in the first place. It should give a better picture of the Redlight district. They only mention the girls in the windows, but don't give you any detail like how much and what you get, no recoomendations (except for one brothel). Also, no detail on the coffee shops. If they treated these two areas as well as the hotels and resturants, then it would be the ultimate party guide to the city. Hey, buy the book - it gives good background and advice. But you need to find details about your particular jollies elsewhere. I am buying the Irreverent Guide to Disney World next!

4 out of 5 stars why not an update?.......2002-08-27

a friend gave me a stack of amsterdam guidebooks and this one w as very out of date. However, I found that the authors captured a lot of the spirit of the city and I liked the idea of the irreverence. Why don't they update the club and hotel material and keep issuing this book? Lots of the other books seem geared to older people but this one reads as if it is for twentysomethings who have been around.

5 out of 5 stars cool insider tone.......2001-12-14

some of the information is out of date, but Kelly has the point of view of someone who loves the city. for correct facts i would go to another book, but her essays capture the flavor and mood of the place.

1 out of 5 stars We wish we could give this book 0 stars.......1999-04-06

My wife and I are from New York City and we're visiting Amsterdam right now. We found so much of the information in this book either out of date or completely wrong that we couldn't even use it. The author's tone is so smug that one wonders if she even likes Amsterdam. The guy at the used book store we brought it to here wouldn't even buy it!

                            1 out of 5 stars ?!?!?!?.......1999-02-28

I don't think the author, has ever been to Amsterdam. The same place is refered 2 times, with diferent descriptions, if it where different places. etc...

I really think the author, didn't spend much time in Amsterdam at all, safe your money
