5 out of 5 stars Great Science Project for Little Learners.......2007-09-03

If you are looking for a simple "experiment" for the budding scientist in your home, this is an excellent book. As you read this with your young child, he/ she will certainly be inspired to do what the kids in the book are doing; planting a bean seed and watching it grow.

As you read along with the story and follow-up with actually doing the experiment your child becomes part of the story, waiting and watching as his (or her) own seeds develop. Children learn the essential elements of growing seeds. Once you have successfully grown your first bean plants, there is a page at the rear of the book that guides you through additional "experiment" ideas to go even deeper.

This book, because it is on the Stage 1 level, is a bit less informative than the other Let's Read and Find Out Science books that we already have in our growing collection which are primarily Stage 2, but certainly worthwhile in that it guides parent and child through a very simple Science project.

Basic concepts covered in this book in addition to the seed growing are:

1. Counting (stage 1 is geered toward preschool to early kindergarten)
2. Patience (in that you must wait days to see things begin to happen)
3. The ability to follow instructions (the steps to perform the experiments)

4 out of 5 stars Seeds for little kids.......2007-08-27

This book is a lil juvenille... not as information. But it covers the basics... I wished it was a bit more scientific.

5 out of 5 stars My five year old enjoyed this book.......2003-01-10

We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school.

The books in this series are informative and interesting for their target audiences. The illustrations are well done and add to understanding the process being described. They make it easier to follow for kids.

4 out of 5 stars Life Springing Forth........2002-03-28

This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

4 out of 5 stars A Kids First Science Book.......2000-04-13

This is one very good science book. If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with your project. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high school science textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving every detail that there is. So what I'm trying to say is that this is a good book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-12

My son was so excited because we planted seeds a nd watched what happened in "real' life as explained by the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Young Curious Minds..........2006-05-30

As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better.......2004-09-12

We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift. I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses." There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show. It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts. "Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud. I say stick with the earlier books.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-04

I enjoyed this book very much because it is such a fun way to learn about science. This is the first of many Magic School Bus books I purchased, and I've been hooked ever since.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars No Vegetables what a bummer.......2004-02-09

Do not purchase this book if you are looking for advice on starting vegetables, because even though veggies are annuals that bloom, they are not covered in this guide. If you prefer to reference your plants by the common names (e.g. Lilly of the Valley - not Convallaria) or a color photo, then this book will be hard to use, because the plants are ordered by their taxanomic/latin names and all of the drawings are black and white sketches.

If you are able to find the plant that you are looking for, then the propogation/seed starting information is pretty good.

Bottomline, probably not the best book if you are just beginnig to experiment with the hobby of growing your annuals from seed.

4 out of 5 stars Good on the seed, but not on the bloom.......2002-04-09

I have been planting flowers from seed in my home for almost 5 years now. Last year I had over 1400 seedlings on multi-level shelves under flourescent and natural light in my dining room. (Boy do I need a greenhouse!) So this book was not a lot of new information to me. A lot of what is listed can be found on the back of a seed packet, but it's not practical to sit on the floor of my favorite garden supply store and read every seed package for suggestions before I buy it. (This is important, because I'm not interested in refrigerating my seeds 3 weeks before I plant them or doing other such preparations required for some seeds.) One major thing missing from this book was photography. There were drawings, but I'm sorry to say that they were mostly a way of breaking up the monotony of the text rather than a reference tool. On the good side, this book did an excellent job of providing the proper germination environment, and each plant had a quick reference in a shaded box that listed the type of plant (annual, perennial, etc), its hardiness zone, and its flowering season. This allowed me to quickly eliminate the plants that were inappropriate for my zone. The regular index wasn't very useful, but one wonderful addition was an index of the common & latin names. I refer to this when looking at some of my books that include the full color photography I was missing. (Almost makes up for it....almost!) Of course, there is the standard hardiness zone map, but they also added a map each for the probable first and last frost dates. (Nice!) Also included was a directory of seed companies and their addresses. All in all, this book does a good job of covering the seed part, but a poor job of covering the bloom part.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible.......2002-02-20

I am a plant propagator, both at work and at home, and I have access to all the seed starting handbooks. This is the one I turn to the most often. It's comprehensive and easy to use. In fact, if it included vegetables, it could pretty much stand alone. The only thing that would make it a little better would be illustrations of the seedlings.

4 out of 5 stars Best reference on seed starting.......2001-05-08

This is a great reference book for gardeners who are interested in starting plants from seed rather than buying the same old stuff from their local garden centers each year. This best thing about this book is that it rates each plant on its degree of difficulty when it comes to growing that plant from seed. Unlike the seed catalogs which imply that all plants are easy to grow from seed, this book breaks it down into detailed instructions as to how to get the seeds to germinate and what conditions they require once germination takes place. It is a great reference when browsing through the seed catalogs as to which plants are worth trying to start from seed and those whose needs may be way too much time, money or environmentally demanding to even bother with.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference guide!.......2000-01-17

This is an indispensable book for the home seed-starter. I teach plant propagation classes in addition to starting a thousand seedlings in my basement every year and this is the book I recommend. An encyclopedic format with plant-by-plant listings of both indoor and outdoor sowing requirements, transplanting and care information, plus line drawings of each plant make this an invaluable reference guide!

I purchased this with the hope that I would be able to use the pictures for discussion about apples with the preschoolers that I teach. The illustrations are wonderful but are truly geared toward an early elementary school level science curriculum. A better choice for my age level children was The Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons in which a little boy interacts with a tree throughout the seasons of the year.

5 out of 5 stars How do Apples Grow?.......2000-08-03

Betsy Maestro has done it again! Her book about how apples grow is both informative and fun to read. Students will be captivated by the story and the pictures. This book is a must have for all classrooms!

Well organized, from the definition of sunflower right through the life cycle, this book thoroughly covers the growth of the sunflower plant. Vocabulary words are boldly highlighted and explained in context, as well as in the accompanying glossary. Captions supplement each photograph. Plant part, pest, and pollination questions are asked and answered. This book would be a valuable resource to primary students conducting research on the life cycle of plants, particularly the sunflower.

It's better than an all-day sucker"), ways to stave off backseat bickering, and what to do when the sun is in baby's eyes. Sections covering airline travel, motels, and eating out are equally helpful, and interspersed with the tips are phone numbers, Internet sites, and other resources. A small section on traveling abroad rounds out this solid, practical book that will help prevent vacations of the National Lampoon variety. --Ericka Lutz

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good information.......2005-01-18

I bought this book before going on some extensive travel with my family, and I'm glad I did. There were a lot of helpful tips and suggestions for traveling with children of all ages. I didn't give it 5 stars because I had hoped for just a little more help, but it was very close to meeting my expectations.

            3 out of 5 stars Expected more..........2004-11-16

.... from this book. I have a two yr old and we have travelled quite a bit and I was really expecting something that I was going to go "Wow, what a great idea". Maybe there is nothing new out there, or maybe this book tries to cover too many age groups and too many travel circumstances. But I really didnt come away with any new ideas. Guess it may be of interest to people with new babies.
