Book Description

A woman.  Her teenage daughter.  A handsome, laid-back, chauvinistic rancher.  And the savagery of unseen forces at large in the mountain wilds of Utah.  New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards is here at her passionate best as she tracks the perils of the wilderness, the hidden face of violence, and--most awesome of all--the powerful feelings that evolve between men and women when lives are at stake.

Lynn Nelson is beautiful, harried--and divorced.  A thirty-five-year-old single mother, she agrees to help chaperone her teenage daughter Rory and nineteen other girls on a wilderness trip.  It seems pretty simple at first: the trip is sponsored by Adventure Incorporated, the weather is fine, and nothing is more troublesome than the minor skirmishes that sometimes flare up between girls and their mothers.

Except that there's more lurking along these mountain trails than adolescent hormones.  Lynn and Rory find themselves set apart from the rest of the group, with only outfitter Jess Feldman for protection--he with the blazing baby blues, and the more than slightly macho attitude that women can't handle the outdoors.  Normally Jess would be protection enough, but surrounding the trio is a danger far more menacing than any of them realizes--the face of an unknown and all too real evil is at large.  As this terrifying ordeal plays itself out, the sparks that fly between Jess and Lynn make for a passion every bit as dramatic as the twisted trails of the majestic Uinta mountain range.

2 out of 5 stars Least Favorite Robards Book.......2006-08-21

I bought this book after reading the reviews here and also because I've enjoyed the last three Robards books I've read. This one was not at all as enjoyable to me as the other three I read (Superstition, Whispers at Midnight and Paradise County). Maybe I'm just not a wilderness or cowboy kind of girl because the romance aspect was just ok to me, and the supense, while some parts were pretty good, mostly bored me. I just didn't care for this one, but I love Karen Robards normally so I'll continue to keep reading herbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Romantic Suspense Novel!.......2003-08-01

Karen Robards is one of my favorite authors and this is one of her best books in my opinion. I was hooked from the first page.

This review is short and sweet. If you like romantic suspense, check this book out!

3 out of 5 stars Good start-bad ending.......2002-06-26

This Robard's book was a disappointment. The first half held me in its grasp, making me want to read faster and faster but I could only shake my head once the good guys and bad guys met. From that point, it became unrealistic. Did not care for the "end of the world" scenario and how conveniently everything happened for the good guys. For example, when the good guys were cornered and going to be killed, oops, the rock plateau falls and all but one terrorist is killed and this one happens to think that maybe his associates might have been mistaken in their beliefs. Get real! Sorry Karen, I love most of your action/thrillers but this was a major dissapointment.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite and chilling.......2002-05-08

This is my favorite type of book ~ romantic suspense with a slightly religious element, and a sexy hero that I fell in love with.

My friend told me I would love this book and she was 1000% right. It's awesome.

Karen Robards wove her spell around me so that I couldn't stop reading. I almost missed a day of work I was up so late reading to the very end.

She interlaces story, character, and style with such ease that I didn't merely read the book, I lived and breathed it.

5 out of 5 stars Robards' best, by far..........2002-04-07

A hometown fan, I've read all of Robards' books in a few months after discovering "Paradise County" in our local Target store. "Heartbreaker" is the best -- a delicious, fast-paced read with rich characters and delightful banter. I've actually given this book to several friends as gifts.

Also consider my second favorite, "Walking After Midnight." Both are what I call "pursuit" books, where the main characters are on the run, making for a heart-racing read where the main characters are better developed (the storylines focus on survival, street-smarts and the steamy romances that can grow in the process).

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2007-07-03

When I first looked at this book, I rolled my eyes. The Earth is My Mother? But when I opened the book, and I began to read, something made me want to cry, and make a difference. I understand Sarah's love for nature, and the inspiring tale of her makes me want to stand up and save the world. The way all her snapshots oddly made one picture of a mother, HER mother, OUR Mother, it just made me so happy. This book looked so..well..stupid, and right now, I can hardly believe my previous thoughts about it. I practically hugged this book. The next day, when I almost littered, I stopped myself, because I remembered this book. A life changing tale about a girl who makes a difference...all for her dead mother, and though she didn't know it, for herself...to protect Magic Canyon.

Another "earth" book I love for the illustrations is:
Dear Children of the Earth.
I also love a novel about how hope can work miracles, that is an all-time FAVORITE of mine:
The Secret Garden

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative book for nature lovers.......2005-01-08

If you and your children love nature and the outdoors, give yourself a treat and read this book together. I read this with my 10 year olds, and all three of us loved it. There is enough adventure to spark a child's imagination, and the tale provides opportunities for teaching one's children about important conservation issues. The artwork is wonderful, and we had the poster which is included with the book matted and framed. My girls love to look at the poster, and discuss again the details of the story that are depicted in this wonderful artwork by Bev Doolittle. This is a book that your children will remember and return to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Restoring the circle...........2001-09-30

THE EARTH IS MY MOTHER is the tale of a girl named "Star" -- a spunky 11-year and a true heroine. EMM has been beautifully illustrated by Bev Doolittle--known for her "camouflage" Native American and wildlife artwork. Since millions of dollars from the proceeds of Ms. Doolittle's works have gone to support the National Wildlife Federation, you can imagine the major theme of this book is the preservation of the wilderness. The storyline is based on Ms. Doolittle's concept but the text was actually written by Elise Maclay, author of two books of poetry, "Approaching Autumn" and "Green Winter." EMM is a feast for the ear and the eye.

I cannot praise this book enough as it reflects all my core beliefs--that girls can be strong, brave, and caring individuals, that traditional cultures have much to teach us, that we are all part of the great circle of life, and that we are made from stardust and the earth is our mother.

As a childhood fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories, Thorton Burgess' "Old Mother West Wind" tales, and fan of American Indian traditions and lore as well as a lover of the great outdoors, I was pleased to discover a book I could hand to my granddaughters with these words, "You want to know what life is about? read this book."

5 out of 5 stars adventure story for children who love nature.......2000-06-18

This is a beautifully written adventure story set in the Southwest which my son and daughter, ages 10 and 11, both loved. It made a terrific family 'read aloud' for all of us. Like most kids today, they are conservationists and lovers of nature and Native American lore. The author artfully sets forth an important environmental issue, destruction of habitat, in an adventure-story format. The 11 year old heroine, Sarah, is brave and delightful, wrestling not only with saving the earth but family difficulties my kids empathized with. The illustrations by Bev Doolittle -- 'camoflague' art the kids loved to piece together -- are gorgeous. We loved it! I'm ordering a few copies for friends -- it's a great summer read for kids.

5 out of 5 stars the earth is my mother.......2000-05-19

When an eleven years old girl, wise beyond her years, deeply feels for the earth and its endless bounty of beauty and truth embarks on a journey that encompasses the circle of life. Her "vision quest" begins to save a magical canyon. Capturing justice with her camera she finds that in her photography along with the assistance of the media, they are able to give back to Mother Earth and its preservation of truth, beauty and the pursuit of happiness. It is recommended for young adults, however, the spirit of this book can touch anyone and it's art is too real!

The Desert Mothers: Spiritual Practices from the Women of the Wilderness

There is no denying the impact the Desert Christians had and continue to have on Christian spirituality. Having myself been influenced by the Desert Christians for over twenty years, I welcome Mary C. Earle's book.

Looking at the title I am reminded of the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000. The last clause in that recount is "not counting the women and children." Estimates vary. Counting the women and children is thought to increase the number of those fed from 15,000 to 35,000. Even with the more modest 15,000, when we count the women and children it is a far bigger miracle than feeding merely 5,000 men.

Scholars tell us that the number of women in the desert far outnumbered the men. So perhaps it is safe to say that the impact of desert spirituality upon Christianity may be dependent more upon the contribution of women than men, even though only the sayings of four Ammas have been preserved. One can only hope that future archaeological digs will uncover a collection of sayings of the Desert Mothers.

Be that as it may, Rev. Earle has filled a need left lacking in Christianity for far too long. Not only does she answer her own question "where are all the women?", she tells us how to use what we read in the Desert Christians and apply it to our own lives. I say she has supplied a need because most of what is written about the Desert Christians has been scholarly: where did they come from; why did people flock out into the desert; development of monasticism and such topics. In this book, Rev. Earle uses the sayings very much as the first audience must have done: to change one's life in tangible ways.

It could be argued that main reason desert spirituality has been so important is precisely because it address the nitty gritty of how to meet Christ, turn one's back on one's old life to follow Him. The question is often "But how do we follow Jesus? What does that look like? I am sickened by the extravagance all around me, but how can i live differently?"

Could there be a more stark contrast between life in twenty-first century United States and the barren wastes of the deserts of Egypt? In an age when Voluntary Simplicity is a way of life for so many, when people take Internet quizzes to measure how big is their individual impact upon the planet, maybe the Desert Christians have something to say to us. I believe they do.

So does Rev. Mary Earle. In this deceptively short book (less than 100 pages), she uses a saying as a jumping off point, becomes an Amma herself to start us thinking of our homes as our hermitage or what it effect it might have on us were we to be regular in prayer and reading Scriptures. Above I called it a "deceptively short book." This is because its impact is in excess of the number of pages. One every one, Rev. Earle invites us deeper into the life of faith and the most simple lifestyle possible.

4 out of 5 stars like visiting with a dear friend over coffee or tea.......2007-04-03

Mary Earle, Episcopal priest and teacher, takes tiny gems from the known writings of desert mothers (ammas) to help regular folk deal with and even embrace the desert moments in their lives. Mary is a mother and pastor and a teacher. Her writings here take snippets of writings from Christian women at the birth of Christianity and sift them through her understanding of being in the world. She uses these sayings of the mothers to remind us that deserts, while challenging, are not bad places or places devoid of richness or places of escape. Earle, through her engagement with the writings of these holy women, encourages women (and men) to acknowledge their desert places, to embrace the challenges of such places, and to create cells (holy corners) to make sense of our lives.

It is a short book full of thoughtful passages and practical applications. It would make a lovely gift for anyone, but especially those who feel sort of "stuck" in a desert-like moment.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Earle has done it again........2007-02-26

What she did for Celtic Christian spirituality and Benedictine practice in her previous books--combine rich historical and theological background with practical ways to engage a particular way of praying--Mary Earle does here for the tradition of the "desert mothers." She introduces us to some remarkable 4th century women (less well known but no less wise than their male counterparts), and invites us to join them on their journey into God. These desert women take us back to basics: reminding us to stay open to ongoing transformation, to trust in God's abiding Presence, to cherish silence in our noisy world. Weaving together scholarship, story-telling, and shrewd insight from her own experience, Mary Earle leads us to see our daily lives as "the very habitat of God," and shows us "ways of becoming new." Her style is quiet, conversational, disarming--but be warned: the company of these luminous women could change your life. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Alaska Mother Goose.......2002-10-31

Having this book since I was a baby, I have loved it up until now. I think I always will! The Alaska Mother Goose, by Shelly Gill and Illustrations by Shannon Cartwright, is a book filled with different rhymes about animals, and the habits that they do in Alaska.
The book describes each animal, starting out with snow geese, then to the end with a child, gazing at the Northern Lights. The poems are hilarious and lighthearted. The sea otter floats without a care, the black bears mouths turn blue from eating too many berries, and a porcupine's prickles get filled with berries from sitting on a cranberry bog! At the end of the book, there is a glossary filled with every animal mentioned in the book describing its name, and what it is.
If you want to get your child more familiar with animals, I think this book is perfect. It's very realistic and informational! Humorous at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for nature and Alaska-lovers!.......2000-10-23

Wonderful, fun book... animals who live in Alaska each have their own nursery rhyme that describes the animal and its' habitat. Illustrations are fun and some of the rhymes are hilarious. I loved the book so much I purchased it while on my honeymoon before our children were even conceived! Definately unique. Different than other books in that both the child and the parent enjoy reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars It's wonderful.......2000-04-19

As you may guess from the title, this book is comprised of variations on Mother Goose rhymes with a theme of wildlife found in Alaska. The author has a wonderful command of words and I love the images she creates. The delightful illustrations compliment the text well. The rhymes have the charm of traditional Mother Goose rhymes, but are mixed with inspiring images of nature rather than images of violence (the baby and cradle falling, etc.). I am so happy to have run across this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb for children from all locales.......1999-01-16

My daughter particularly loves the Alaskan version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" We live in Alaska, and she has seen the northern lights--she learned "Twinkle Twinkle Northern Lights" first. This is a great book

4 out of 5 stars Very well-written and inspirational, but also quite sad, bordering on tragic.......2006-02-17

This is an interesting, fast-paced book about the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship and the extent one woman is willing to sacrifice herself for her child. Sarah was such a strong heroine and it was easy to admire her for all she sacrificed in her passionate mission to be independent and provide for herself and her daughter. Her work ethic was incredible! In her position, I don't know if I'd have the courage and strength to do as she did, especially with TWO handsome, loving and kindly gentlemen offering to take care of me and my daughter. In fact, it was very frustrating that even after successfully achieving her goals, Sarah wasn't open to a new relationship with either of these good men, and didn't allow herself to fall in love again, relieving the intense loneliness she often struggled with, and making her daily life more joyful. She certainly deserved as much! I ached alongside her when Rebecca returned home from boarding school with values and ideas that were in conflict with Sarah's humble lifestyle. Even though this story would be considered to have a happy ending, I felt very heavy-hearted and empty that Sarah worked so hard for such bittersweet rewards. Although she made admirable choices, the price she paid was far too much, as well as unnecessary. Was being independent and admired/respected at the expense of developing close and solid relationships truly worth it?

I loaned this book out so many times to other "moms" that I finally lost track of it! However, when it was still in my possession and I'd feel like reading something of real value, I would pull out my dog-eared copy and reread favorite sections or skim . Luckily, after 8 years of being without it, I have located it again through amazon.com. Hooray! Summary: A mother in her 40's attempts to understand her college age son, and follows him to Canada where she lives with him briefly during a 2-month visit in the wilderness. There she begins to understand his different approach to life through their shared experiences, laughter, and tears. It makes me smile and feel good each time I peruse it.

This book is a good resource. I'm slightly uneasy with the Serbo-Croatian section, which seems to contain some errors. I also wish the system for presenting varying levels of formality or various genders could be more standardized throughout the series, across languages. Also, Americans should keep in mind that these pronunciation rules were apparently designed more for British (and Australian?) readers. The effects of that mainly show up in vowel pronunciation, especially with o's and a's.

I used two different editions of this phrasebook in Macedonia, Greece and Bulgaria (western part, where Macedonian is spoken). Not only did I find it extremely easy to use, but everyone I met wanted to buy it off me. Albanians suggested that the Albanian section was nice; Macedonians suggested the Macedonian section was good. A Serbian friend of mine found the Serbian section useful for learning English phrases. Several people in Greece were delighted to see something that had Macedonian and Greek and Albanian all in one phrasebook but suggested that the Greek section was spotty. A member of the Turkish minority in Macedonia said she was irritated that Turkish was not included as a Mediterranean European Language but _even so_ tried to buy the phrasebook off me.

This is the single most useful phrasebook I have ever used on trips and made a nice gift to Balkan people there and here when it was available, along with the American colloquial phrasebook, , the "Lonely Planet USA Phrasebook : English, Native American Languages & Hawaiian (Lonely Planet : Language Survival Kit)", another inspired Lonely Planet phrasebook.

I have just returned to Norway after a year backpacking around in Latin America (of course accompanied by the Lonely Planet books). I do not claim to be an expert, but I know what I look for in a travel guide!

This edition of the LP Mediterranean Europe does not dissappoint me. It is up to date on the information, and as with all the other LP books it is easy to find your way around with it. It includes maps over the big cities, quite accurate price estimates for the hotels, and time schedules for bus, train etc.

You will find that if you are walking around with the LP book under your arm, many of the local people will approach you and ask you if you need help. Say yes - even if you don't need help! It is a great opportunity to get in contact with the local people!

This book is a must on your travel!

The Lonely Planet guides are excellent for any locale..but this edition (covering Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal and even Morocco) is a must-read for the quintessential backpacker jumping on a plane for Europa. These guides excel at recommending lodging of many price ranges (from youth hostels to 5-star hotels) and meal choices of the same range (excellent recommendation for outdoor markets.."buy a loaf of bread, a block of cheese and a bottle of wine here"..which is a plus as many guides catering to this area focus on only older travels with large budgets..or persons seeking to spend only a dollar a day or some insanity..it's always good to have the most information possible..and it's included here. Entertainments ideas from free plaza and park visiting to museums, discotechqes, architecture, boat rides etc. etc. are included..good for young and old. It even lists culture-sensitve information such as appropriate dress for visiting churches and monasteries as well as travel-safe tips for women. Book your Eurorail pass and get going.

Lonely Planet has great books and this one certainly was. It's very thorough and tells alot about things that interest travellers. They are up to date and tell you the pros and cons of the different countries. I liked it alot and I know that other people will too.

2 out of 5 stars Getting Slimmer Every Edition.......2001-06-17

The Mediterranean Europe Guidebook has been getting slimmer every edition for certain countries in the Balkans. And, since the companion volume, the Mediterranean Phrasebook, is no longer available, there is almost utility in buying the new editions for going to the Balkans. The worse coverage is for Macedonia. Nor has what information they have been substantially updated. The maps are nearly useless. Thankfully, maps are easily purchased in the countries. AAAAAHHH! Make sure you buy separate maps for every city you are planning on going to unless you feel like walking around all day (and I do mean ALL DAY) trying to find some place they recommended. I didn't think the maps were so bad until I was actually there and could not find anything! Notice that nearly half of the streets are unlabeled. Otherwise it's pretty good I guess, and certainly had more of a cross section of the countries I was actually interested in visiting. Sometimes though I think they are trying to make people scared for some reason. Just for the record, I never saw anybody speeding by on motorcycles grabbing people's purses in Italy. And some places they act like are all great and really aren't much to look at (like, ahem, Naples).

5 out of 5 stars Where do you want to go in Med Europe? Start here!.......2000-04-01

The book is excellent if you want to go to Med Europe but have trouble deciding exactly where, although you need to buy the specific book for a country if you intend to spend more than two weeks in that country. It helped narrow my choice for the countries I was considering . It's also extremely useful if you cannot afford to buy all the books for the countries you'll be visisting in Med Europe. The sections on Morocco and Tunisia are an added bonus! It's over a year old but the information is still up-do-date.

I've already ordered the Eastern Europe edition for my next holiday!
