Grasses of the Texas Hill Country: A Field Guide.......2006-11-06
I use this book as my only field guide even though I'm out studying and teaching others about the tall grass prairie near Houston. I find the explanations, photos, and general tabs extremely helpful. Because I live outside of the Hill Country, I only wish that the author would do a book about the almost extinct Gulf Coast prairies.
Has errors that need correcting.......2006-05-22
I found many errors, at least 8 that were very apparent. Not knowing much about grasses I did not know if the other facts in the book were correct since the mistakes were obvious, even to me. It must have not been proof read. Some pages did not have a full picture of the plant, only the top. The pictures that were there were good.

for the grass enthousiast.......2007-07-18
This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.
Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.
GRASSES AND HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM.......2000-06-12
THIS BOOK ON GRASS IS A REAL GOOD BOOK FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN LEARNING A LOT OVER IDENTIFICATION OF GRASSES.

Book Description
The story of Emil Henry Marks and his LH7 Ranch records not only the history of a unique family but also tells of the cattle business on the coastal prairies of Texas when ranching was the principal industry of the region, before Houston became a major metropolitan center and industry became king. It also chronicles the beginning of the Salt Grass Trail Ride, one of Houston's most enduring traditions.
Marks registered the LH7 brand in Harris County in 1898 and started the ranch with 63 acres of grass west of Houston and a few Longhorn cattle. By the early 1930s the LH7 was running 6,670 head on 36,000 acres. The city's shadow loomed over the LH7 in the 1940s and 1950s, and eventually a big bite of the ranch was condemned to protect booming Houston from flooding along Buffalo Bayou. At age seventy, Marks made the first Salt Grass Trail Ride in January 1952, which is reenacted each February to kick off the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Men and women worked hard to keep up with ranch life.......2002-03-17
Deborah Lighfoot Sizemore's The LH7 Ranch: In Houston's Shadow is the fascinating and informative true story of a cattle range that has operated since 1907 and the venerable family who owned it. Men and women worked hard to keep up with ranch life, stand fast through the Great Depression and finally stand up to a conflict with the growing metropolis of Houston. Energetic and aptly researched, The LH7 Ranch is a most compelling and highly recommended slice of Texan-American regional history.
A well-crafted work.......1999-04-20
Having reviewed books for THE CATTLEMAN magazine for 30 years, I read with pleasure this well-crafted work about a ranch in a part of Texas not commonly associated with ranching and ranch life. The Marks LH7 Ranch was established at the end of the 19th century in an area only about 20 miles west of the center of Houston. The author was fortunate in her work because she was able to interview all four of rancher E.H. Marks' children. This gives her work an immediacy not allowed to some biographers.--Copyright 1992 K.E. Snyder, Friends of the Fort Worth (Texas) Public Library
Loved it!.......1999-04-14
I got the book for Christmas and read it in two days. I loved it! Boy, what a family! I do a combination of genealogy and local history writing in the vicinity of the old LH7 Ranch and was thrilled to see what the author had done in this book.
A Wonderful Book!.......1999-04-13
I especially enjoyed the women's part of it and the warmth and reality the author brought to the story. I hope it sells as well as it deserves to.
Product Description
The only book on ornamental plants dedicated to the remarkably cold-hardy and arid-adapted native species of Trans-Pecos Texas. The potential of these trees, shrubs, succulents, cacti, and grasses for use in the landscape, both within and beyond the borders of their native habitats, has been only superficially tapped. Yuccas, Ceniza, Texas Mountain Laurel, and Salvias are already familiar to native plant enthusiasts. But hundreds of essentially unknown plants with ornamental potential await discovery, propagation, trial, establishment in the nursery trade. You will find them treated here.

Native Plants in Landscaping-Texas Desert and Mountains.......2007-01-11
I have recently purchased land in the Northern Chihuahuan Desert in Texas. This excellent book is proving itself invaluable to me. Excellent primer for growing and landscaping with plants which do not have high water requirements.
Book Description
Ranching on the vast scale that Texas is famous for actually happened at King Ranch, a sea of grass that ultimately spread its pastures to countries around the globe under the fifty-year leadership of Bob Kleberg. This absorbing biography, written by Kleberg's top assistant of many years, captures both the life of the man and the spirit of the kingdom he ruled, offering a rare, insider's view of life on a fabled Texas ranch. John Cypher spent forty years (1948-1988) on King Ranch. In these pages, he melds highlights of Kleberg's life with memories of his own experiences as the "right hand" who implemented many of Kleberg's grand designs. In a lively story laced with fascinating anecdotes he both recounts his worldwide travels with Kleberg as the ranch expanded its holdings to Latin America, Cuba, Australia, the Philippines, Europe, and Africa, and describes timeless, traditional tasks such as roundup at the home ranch in Kingsville. Kleberg's accomplishments as the founder of the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed and a breeder of Thoroughbred racing horses receive full attention, as does his fabled lifestyle, which included friendships not merely with the rich and famous but also with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who shared his love of horse racing. For everyone interested in ranching and one of its most famous practitioners, this book will be essential reading.

An entertaining and insightful look at true Texas history........1998-12-22
This is a great book for anyone interested in the cattle business, Texas history, or the politics of big business in the middle of this century. One need not be a rancher or cattleman to enjoy this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone from any background.
unique insight to modern-day, multi-national ranch boss.......1998-03-03
If you have an interest in the King Ranch, you should read this book.

Grass Kingdom.......2000-08-29
I really enjoyed this book. It has the makings of a great western movie. I am beginning to read the other stories of the Baron's, stories of Matt's ancestors and i really enjoy them so far.
It's better than GIANT, and another Texas great!.......1999-08-30
Wes Lukowsky could stand a lesson in good literary fiction and watch less TV. GRASS KINGDOM is a work of art and a literary masterpiece. If you understand the talent behind novels such as LONESOME DOVE or CALL OF THE WILD, then you'll see what makes Jory Sherman rank with the best. Read GRASS KINGDOM, you won't be disappointed.
A fine dynastic saga of early Texas.......1999-03-08
Jory Sherman brings to this book a love of early Texas and the larger-than-life people who founded it. This is a novel of empire building, and written with such poetry and beauty that it will inspire delight in any reader. It is as if Sherman had borrowed from the history of the great King Ranch in Texas.
A reader cannot help but enjoy this book.

The Only Book You'll Need.......2007-06-18
As the other reviewers have said, this is a great guidebook. I used it to plan a three-day visit recently. The hotel I chose was exactly as described, and a good choice. Unlike some guidebooks, it has great maps. There are six detailed colored maps in the back of the book, a map of the Dublin Area Regional Transit trains, and numerous smaller maps inside (e.g., maps of walking tours, of Trinity College, of cathedrals). The book is chock-full of interesting and useful info on all the sights of Dublin. In addition, if you want to do day trips out of Dublin, don't assume you need a different all-Ireland guide - there is a section on "excursions" you can do in a day, and instructions on how to get there (public transport, car, organized tour). I will say that one of the tours I took wasn't quite how it was described, but I should probably take that up with the tour company. A few tips: a) for a breathtaking coastal walk, go to Howth. Malahide, another coastal town, wasn't worth the time for me. b) Glendalough is a beautiful park with two big lakes, and to me was worth more time than the organized tour I chose allotted for it.
That's Accuracy.......2005-11-15
My wife and I just got back from Ireland and had a great time, in part because of this book. The guesthouse we stayed in, several of the restaurants we visited, and more than a couple of the sites we saw were drawn from its pages. I'm happy to report that its guidance was uniformly spot on. We tend to enjoy simply being in a place, doing things in a low key way and deciding what to do next as we take our time wandering around. This guide was perfect for that, easy to whip out of a bag over lunch or on a street corner, though I suspect that it would be useful for those who prefer to set down itineraries, too.
For what it's worth, this has been our experience with other Lonely Planet guides as well (including those for Ireland and Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks).
Handy, convenient and helpful.......2004-07-05
I bought this guide and the Rick Steves book to plan my trip to Dublin. Both were very helpful, but I left Rick's book at home because Lonely Planet has GLBT info in it and has better maps. I used the maps a lot, both to find my way and also to get back on track when I got lost. A lot of the prices for things quoted in the book had gone up, but that's to be expected. I highly recommend both Dublin and this guidebook.
Dracula Fans!.......2003-10-22
This sweet, compact guide measures only 7" x 3", but packs a wallop in the info department! Went to Dublin last year, and out of 8 city guides I looked at, this was the ONLY one who had info on Bram Stoker (Dracula's author); his house in an historic landmark, and the author also leads you to his beautiful birth residence!
