Hmmmm........2001-11-16
I think it's wonderful that Ms. Langston has begun to evaluate some of the causes of deforestation in the western U.S. The forest service has certainly been careless and haphazard in its management of our forests. Insect infestation and diseases have undoubtedly ravaged our forests. Conspicuously undercovered in Ms. Langston's book, though, is the damage caused by unselective logging. Any honest (and I'm not trying to suggest that Ms. Langston is deliberately dishonest) tree biologist will tell you that logging, more than any other manmade activity, has had the severest impact on our wilderness.
A terrific study of the paradox between man and nature!.......1998-12-16
Even though I work in the field of cultural & historic resources management, I have recommended this study of the Blue Mountains to my colleagues in the natural resources department at Montpelier, the home of James & Dolley Madison, as they struggle with several fundimental issues (clear cutting, natural re-seeding, etc.). My sister's work is clear, concise (so that a lay person can understand the principles set forth in her work), and an enjoyable read. I highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in saving America's natural resources! Lee Langston-Harrison Director of Curatorial Operations Montpelier Montpelier Station, Virginia
Thorough critique, but offers no technical solutions.......1998-11-20
Langston has done a thorough job of historical research. However, what makes an environmental critique good is the solution offered. The book is very weak in this area. The author does mention society needing a better relationship with the land, but this cannot be applied to silviculture without details attatched. She may be a good historian, but she is not innovative. Langston offers no real clue as to how the Forest Service should continue in the future according to her ideals. A critique is not valid with out offering a better way, and she fails in that department.

Extraordinary.......2001-02-21
I was 9 years old when I first read this book and I can honestly say that this is the best book that I've ever read! I have read it three times and have been unable to locate another book anything like it. It sheds a fasinating and very real light on the natural world. The book is far better than the TV series (even though that was very good!)
An excellent book!.......1998-02-22
This book is a must for anyone interested in dangerous creatures. It covers nearly everything from the big cats to maruading army ants and includes accounts of real life encounters. I highly recommend it.
Approachable science and real life monsters.......1997-10-11
Fabulous photography and very readable text. It has gotten rave reviews from my three boys ages 7, 11 and 13. It manages to cover the crawlers and biters without being grisley, and has a sort of hard cover National Geographic feel to it.

Product Description
The book explains the role of dreams in understanding ourselves, our God, and our task in life. the book is based on the author\'s investigation of a large number of dreams of his own over a period of thirty years. In contrast to the views of other dream theorists, he argues that dreams proceed from a supernatural source and are intended to incite the dreamer to move toward integration and wholeness.
Product Description
This illustrated book about the incredible 91-day adventure undertaken by John Ridgway and Chay Blyth. A battle against superhuman odds. A smack in the eye for those who say the spirit of adventure is dead. Marvellously free of heroics, most of it was sheer hell. They were cold, ill, cramped, lonely and frightened, tormented by despair and at one point on the verge of starvation. Supremely interesting... not only as a factual account of a physical ordeal but also for the psychological insight it offers. They set out to row across the Atlantic because they wanted to. An ambition to be called a little mad, perhaps. But it is a form of madness to make one proud of human beings.

Book Description
(The author) has an observant and enthusiastic eye, she writes elegantly and with warmth, and knows her subject inside out. SUNDAY TELEGRAPHBR> The best guide to Rome published for many a long year SUNDAY TIMES Rome is a city with over 2,500 years of history, with buildings and art treasures representative of much of that time; as Augustus Hare wrote, the fascination lies in the discovery of `ancient cloister and sculptured fountain, of mouldering fresco and medieval tomb - of mosaic-crowned gateway and palm-shadowed garden - and the gradually acquired knowledge of the wondrous story which clings around each of these ancient things'. Georgina Masson's book provides the perfect companion to this voyage of discovery, including both the great sights - the Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican Palace and many more - and the smaller corners of Rome's squares and streets; she guides the visitor equally skilfully though the maze of the Roman past. And she evokes the reactions of earlier travellers to Rome, who, like the author of the twelfth-century pilgrims' guide to the marvels of the city, have been equally entranced by the city's classical monuments and its Christian heritage. Her book has long been recognised as a classic, and is now presented in a fully revised and updated edition.
Customer Reviews:
I'm updating my tattered copy -.......2007-08-25
I used this book extensively when we lived in Rome in the late 1970s. It is for the person who has some time to wander around Rome, not necessarily hitting the major tourist sites. I'm replacing my copy before my next visit - the old one has literally fallen apart with use.
The Indispensible Ms Masson.......2007-03-30
This is the time of year that Rome starts getting gussied up for Easter. The Spanish Steps will become a sea of azaleas and the various stational churches and basilicas will get themselves all decked out in finery and flowers for their special feast days (e.g. San Lorenzo in Lucina awash in roses and orchids on Friday of the 3rd week in Lent). If you are fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Roma by all means avail yourself of "The Companion Guide to Rome" by Georgina Masson. It's in several editions but I prefer the earlier ones without the updates by Mr. Fort. My current favorite is a 1966 edition. This book is in a class all it's own in the mass of publications about the city of Rome. It is probably not a book to drag around all day as you tramp the streets of the Eternal City but then why not (it doesn't weigh much more than a water bottle). But it is certainly a book to have in your hotel room to read about the neighborhood you are about to visit or the one you visited the day before. Ms Masson gives lots of details about museums, churches and architecture but it is as much poetic-literature as it is a guide book, she is one with her city (she lived there for many years) and wants us to feel that along with her. For me she succeeds admirably! Earlier this year when I was longing to be in Rome but couldn't be I picked up the Companion Guide then read each chapter with great care and observation as Ms Masson walked me through the tangled streets and lively piazzas, in and out of churches and museums and to favorite little escapes, unknown to most people, but waiting to be discovered guided by the adventerous, creative spirit of Georgina. Highly reccommended.
Essential.......2006-11-10
Don't go to Rome without (Unless you have a private guide). This book made my visits to the Forum, Vatican, Coliseum, Museums and numerous public fountains and sculptures 100x more enjoyable by adding a much deeper layer of understanding. Wonderful.
I suppose it depends what style you like..........2006-10-25
I bought A Companion Guide to Rome by Masson based on 5-star recommendations from Amazon, and for me it was not a worthwhile purchase. The authors (it has been revised several times) offer infinite detail and historical tid bits, but it actually offers little that wasn't already in the Green Guide, and it is too heavy and too much reading in my opinion to do on site, while walking around. It was a nice reference, but I should have looked for it in the library and just borrowed it.
a supreme guidebook.......2004-05-24
Thus book remains a great achievement of travel writing, head and shoulders about other "walking" travel guides. The walks are thoughtfully designed to comprehensively cover the city; Georgina Masson's writing is cultured, individual and excellent, and the book is chock full of interesting background detail to bring the city alive. Rome is a unique and fascinating place and she definitely gets it! Wore out one copy of this book (earlier edition purchased in '78) and am now working on the second, unfortunately much heavier edition, also not the current one.
Not a book for the short-stay or casual visitor who just wants to hit the top sites, but if you want to do some in depth exploration, a tremendous resource (definitely a read ahead resource). Buy this book while you can - its gone out of print a couple of times so far!
Book Description
This book, a guide and companion to the prehistoric archaeology of Greece, is designed for students, travelers, and all general readers interested in archaeology. Greece has perhaps the longest and richest archaeological record in Europe, and this book reviews what is known of Greece from the earliest inhabitants in the Stone Age to the end of the Bronze Age and the collapse of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.
The book describes the prehistoric cultures of Greece in chronological order, and illustrates with 98 detailed drawings each culture’s typical artifacts, architecture, burial customs, and art. Written in an informal and accessible style free of scientific jargon, the book can be used in the classroom or as a guide for the traveler, or read simply for pleasure by anyone with a curiosity about the earliest ages of this fascinating region.
Although intended for a wide audience, the book has a solid scientific foundation. The authors are professional archaeologists with more than 25 years of experience in the field and with a first-hand knowledge of the methods and results of contemporary research. There is no other book today that covers the same range of periods and subjects, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the early civilizations that shaped the Greek landscape, laid the foundations for Classical Greek civilization, and contributed in many ways to the formation of the modern Greek world.
The authors have been careful to address the many questions concerning prehistoric Greece that have been asked them by students and visitors to Greece through the years. The illustrations were created especially for this book, showing familiar artifacts and sites from a new perspective, and selecting others for illustration that rarely, if ever, appear in popular publications.
Book Description
Rome, the "Eternal City," has provided endless inspiration for religious thinkers, poets, artists and philosophers. As the first urban space to boast over a million inhabitants, its ancient glories endure, reflecting the Roman Empire's power and prestige. A religious village set among the ruins of a dead civilization in the Middle Ages, Rome rose from the ashes to become the arbiter of Renaissance taste and thought. A second population and political explosion during the twentieth century has placed new strains upon the city's infrastructure and identity. In the last decade, the capital has witnessed the destruction of a discredited political establishment and the emergence of new forces, pledged to stamp out corruption.
Customer Reviews:
Too jaundiced a view of Rome for this series........2004-05-11
I have read dozens of books on Rome over the years, and I am compelled to warn fellow readers that this one is for a very narrow taste. The author's idiosyncratic observations and very verbose writing style beg for better editing. This might have been entertaining as a magazine article. However, as a book purporting to be " a cultural and literary companion", author and editor must share the blame for not working the text into a better product. The acidic point of view almost worked, but in the end fell flat.
a cynic's view of rome.......2003-04-17
This very cynical Englishman, Boardman, uses this book to disparage Rome, its people and its culture.
Roma per favore.......2001-03-13
A great little book complete with history, maps, and personal insight. Boardman really opens up to the reader and spills his guts about his love for this city. His complete love for the subject matter really comes out in his writing. The book reads like a history book and a story book which makes for easy reading. A nice little book about a city you really need to visit in order to come away with your own story. Bravo.
All roads lead to Jonathan Boardman!.......2001-01-11
A witty insider's history of the Eternal City. Throw away your Baedeker and read Boardman.
