Book Description
In Foliage, Harold Feinstein returns to the natural forms that he chronicled in One Hundred Flowers. An introduction by popular gardening author Sydney Eddison explores the cultural significance of plants while revealing the subtle ways in which they touch our daily lives. Her introduction, along with text by horticulture expert Greg Piotrowski, makes Foliage as practical and informative, as it is beautiful.
Customer Reviews:
PERFECT PARTNER TO "100 ROSES".......2004-06-05
Sydney Eddison is back, introducing _Foliage_, Feinstein's follow-up to _One Hundred Roses_. In the introduction, "Looking Beyond the Obvious," Eddison introduces Foliage as a collection ready to instill a childlike observation and pleasure into grownups. Alexandra Anderon-Spivy's essay, "The Architecture of Nature Enhanced," discusses Feinstein's use of the computer in his images, his talent, and man's love of nature. The rest of the book contains a combination of photographs and such things as poetry, plant names, and famous quotes. There is something informative or inspiring to go with each photograph. Each section is labeled to let the reader know what is in it (Grasses and Ferns, Edibles, The Essence of Green, The Beneficial Green Plant). Feinstein's grasses look picturesque and proud; his vegetables lined and curved and his various greens sharp and eclectic. My favorites are the Hosta leaves (pg 90) and the poppy flower buds (pg 94).
If you are wondering about the expense of the book, consider the artistic value of the photographs printed on strong, waterproof material. A book like this, which is meant to be treasured and shared, will become personally or professionally priceless. Expect visitors to continue glancing through it as long as it sits on your table.
feast your eyes on this!.......2002-12-25
This informative, elegantly designed album of 100 luscious color photographs of plants in all their beauty & symmetry, is divided into Grasses & Ferns; Edibles; The Essence of Green; The Beneficial Green Plant; Leaf Coloration; Cactus & Succulents, & Seeds of Change. It is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, & a treasure for your library.
Popular gardening author Sydney Eddison, writes about the significance of plants in our cultures, revealing some of the subtle ways plants are part of our lives.
Alexander Anderson-Spivy in The Architecture of Nature Enhanced, writes about the legacy & passion of photographers of nature, as well as the photographic enhancing technology of today's computers.
Horticultural expert Greg Piotrowski adds enlightening Botanical Notes which makes FOLIAGE an interesting read.
A magnificent book of awesome proportions & perspectives.

Customer Reviews:
Must-have for floral designers.........2007-08-26
As a floral designer myself, I have been searching for a visual guide to fresh cut flowers for years. This book not only features cut flowers, but has a section on foliage as well. The expected life spans and common names are provided. This book is the encyclopedia of flowers that I have been looking for!
Love Love Love It!.......2007-06-27
I'm 21 and I run my own flower shop. I know my way around a design bench, but unfortunately my inexperience has left me with a limited knowledge of cut flowers and foliages. This book has helped me so much! And the CD Rom is amazing. You can search for flowers by species, family, even color and distinguishing characteristics! Definately two thumbs waaay up!
Not what I expected............2007-03-07
I bought this book thinking it was another book. I was going to return it, but it does serve its purpose at the moment. I wish the photographs were larger. I thought a bit pricey for what it was and the cd rom is not Mac compatable, so I have no use for it!
CD included, and its good!.......2006-11-16
Overall, this is a good buy, and as others have noted, a great staple for the floral designer. I love the disk - you can run a search for "pink flowers," for example, and all flowers with pink variations fed back to you in list form -- you are then able click on the list for pictures of each flower. I wasn't sure if the CD would be included (although it is mentioned on the cover of the book in the picture shown, it is not referred to in the product description) and was pleased to see it is indeed part of the package. I only wish they showed all the color varieties for each genus--instead, there is just one picture and the color variations are listed. With roses, for example, it would be nice to see the many popular types used in common arrangements --vendelas, cool water, versalia....
Great Reference Book.......2002-07-14
I just got this book today and I am so happy that I purchased it. It is the perfect reference book that i have been looking for. It has great pictures of the flowers and foliage , pronunciation as well as design applications. Great book, a must have to all beginner florist.

Fairly detailed book for early elementary children........2003-05-08
I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children.

Book Description
Plant foliage brings drama and structure to the garden with color, shape, and texture all its own. Bright, cheerful flowers may have beauty-pageant appeal that gets noticed by passers-by, but where would all those pretty floral faces be without the stalwart presence of foliage? Every garden benefits from an inspired selection of plants chosen for the beauty of their leaves, and the harmony their presence brings to the entire landscape.
Organized by color and texture, each chapter in Nancy Ondra’s eye-opening new guide illustrates the features and requirements of dozens of plants, all chosen for the unique appeal of their leaves. Colors range from brilliant chartreuse to stunning silver to dusky, moody maroon. Surfaces can be rough or smooth, velvety or prickly, and edges can be scalloped, smooth, or saw-toothed.
With the stunning range of color and texture represented in Rob Cardillo’s rich photography, it’s easy to see how much season-long interest foliage can add to a garden. In addition to identifying and discussing beautiful plant possibilities, Ondra draws on her many years of gardening experience to present vivid plant combinations that work together to enhance and extend garden color. Knowing how and where to use foliage to complement flowers and grasses is as important as understanding the plants themselves.
Flowers come and go, weather can kill blooms prematurely or prevent them from ever appearing, but sturdy, reliable foliage can be the gardener’s salvation, year after year.
Book Description
A high-altitude alligator farm. A UFO watchtower. A monument to a headless chicken. While other travel guides tell you about tackling Pike's Peak, skiing the back bowls, or rafting down the Arkansas River, this quirky regional resource offers unusual travel destinations and little-known historical tidbits. Imagine regaling coworkers with unique Rocky Mountain adventures, like spending an evening at a drive-in movie . . . in a queen-sized bed, or visiting a vapor cave clad only in a towel. How about seeing a two-headed dragon made of car parts, or watching cliff divers while eating Mexican food?
Customer Reviews:
Who woulda thought..........2007-08-07
This book is incredible! I have both the Colorado and Illinois ODDBALL books, and they are hilarious. I had no idea the amount of odd stuff that could be in one state. This is a great travel book! And makes a great gift!
The best travel guide - period!.......2003-05-27
We recently moved to Colorado and purchased about a dozen travel guides to help us get oriented. Oddball Colorado was one we just sort of grabbed in the melee. My wife and I would burst out in spontaneous laughter as we read it. Rather than read it cover to cover, I found myself bouncing around from page to page. Just when I thought I had finished it I would discover another golden nugget I had overlooked. It was a sad day when I realized I had finally finished it!
Now all other travel guides seem inconsequential. Pohlen identifies the natural wonders that really matter (to me!). The cheesy roadside attractions that seemed to capture my father's big station wagon with their tractor beams. Reading the book is like taking a ride with my dad all over again.
Now I've moved onto Oddball Illinois. And I thought nothing could make me want to visit Illinois!
