This is an excellent book for plant identification. I owned a prior issue which had been used so frequently that a replacement was necessary. Well worth the money paid. The author left very little to doubt as to the plant described.

THE Alaska plant book!.......2000-05-28
This book is the most helpful book for identification of Alaska's plants that I've ever found. The plants are correctly organized and well described, and listed by their latin name rather than the ever-confusing common names used in many books. This book is a must for anyone serious about researching and identifying the plants of Alaska or it's neighbors.

Systematists beware!.......2005-11-28
Plant taxonomists and systematists and other sticklers for keeping up on the most modern plant names (always changing as we learn more about DNA vs. observation alone) might balk at this book. Or even get their posies in a knot!
But for the rest of us mortals, Britton and Brown has some of the best drawings packed into these volumes. The attention to detail is incredible - the USDA PLANTS database uses these very drawings (and descriptions) in it's identification of species. These books simply are a classic guide for identification. It's true, once you've pinned down what it is here, you can go to a more modern guide for more modern information. But you're more likely to get a color photo of just the flower and not the rest of the plant! Very frustrating. My advice - have this book (this series) in addition to new field guides. Remind yourself how much work people used to put into this art and science of taxonomy.
A heck of a deal.......2005-06-27
This book (and its companions) is cheap! It has illustrations of just about every species it covers. Despite the carping from the taxonomist it is a heck of a deal. Once you get the plant identified in B&B it is an easy matter to go to another, more recent book, which has synonyms (alternative botanical names) and find out what it is called these days. Plant names are forever changing in mysterious ways not at all understood by those outside the realm of taxonomists. No other publication has this many illustrations -- and most of them are at least adequate.

great.......2000-11-05
Good, inexpensive material for starting out in the study of vegetation.
Reprint of 1913 edition with "wrong names"-- save your money.......1998-01-10
Save your pennies for a copy of the 1952 edition (out of print) from a used book dealer. The 1913 edition uses a set of names known as "American Code" that botanists haven't used since the 1950's; the services of a professional taxonomist is practically required to update the changes, and few people will know what you're talking about if you use an "American Code" name for a plant. The 1952 edition updates all of that, and includes quite a few more species. In my opinion, Dover did a real disservice to botany by reissuing the 1913 edition. Kay Lancaster (plant taxonomist)
Book Description
Flora of North America, Volume 3, provides information on many of the most familiar wildflowers and trees in North America. Included are treatments of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), with such plants as delphiniums and columbines, and the poppy family (Papveraceae). Most of the important broadleaf tree species are covered, including the oaks (Fagaceae), elms (Ulmaceae), birches (Betulaceae), walnuts (Juglandaceae), plane trees (Platanaceae), and magnolias (Magnoliaceae). Many striking families are covered, such as the dutchman's pipe family (Aristolochiaceae), and the aquatic families Nymphaeaceae (water lilies), and Nelumbonaceae (lotus). As with Volume 2, this unique reference provides identification keys, summaries of habitats and geographic ranges, distribution maps, pertinent synonymies, descriptions, chromosome numbers, phenological information, and other significant biological observations for each species. The treatments--written and reviewed by experts throughout the systematic botanical community--are based on original observations of herbarium specimens and, whenever possible, on living plants. These observations are supplemented by critical reviews of the literature. For anyone interested in the definitive account of North American plant life, this newest volume in the long-awaited Flora will be valued as an indispensable acquisition.

Customer Reviews:
coast to coast path - a great guide!!.......2006-02-18
if you can afford only one book, this is the one to buy. we are getting ready to hike the coast 2 coast and, of the three we have purchased, this guide is the most helpful. it is full of detailed, practical info. maps are visually very clear, and written directions are specific. info on planning, budgeting, distance/time itineraries, what to take, getting to and from the coast 2 coast path - all are very useful. websites that are included are current and informative. henry stedman has done an excellent job of providing the info we need!!! five stars!!!
Avoid getting lost on the C to C.......2004-07-04
If you're planning to walk the Coast to Coast, you'll want to buy this book. I walked the C to C in June 2004, using both the Hannon guidebook and Stedman. What's great about Stedman is the detail on his hand-drawn maps at tricky points on the trail. He shows you cattle grids, stiles, old fence posts and other markers, including paths NOT to take, and I often found the detail kept me from heading off on the wrong track. You can't find that level of helpfulness on the traditional strip maps that cover the C to C.
Also useful are Stedman's reviews of places to stay and eat on the path, and where to find things like ATM machines (the last one is in Richmond!). If you're thinking about walking the Coast to Coast, Stedman should definitely be in your mapcase.
That said, you wouldn't want this book to be your only guide. The maps extend only a few hundred feet either side of the path, so if you do get lost, this book won't help you figure out where you are. For that, you need OS Landranger maps. And the Hannon guidebook gives more general directions than Stedman. I found the two quite compatible, and used them both, Hannon to get me to the right area, and Stedman to negotiate the confusing parts.
Because Stedman's book is the most recent of the C to C guides, his information about what's happening in the villages and hamlets is current and quite useful.
