Limited and Incomplete.......2006-02-15
I am a professional ecologist and spend at least 100 days a year in the field characterizing vegetation communities and plant species. It is difficult to tell which part of the country this book would be best suited for, as it would be considered incomplete in the areas I have used it in (Northern and Southern Rockies, Black Hills, Intermountain West and Northern Great Plains). I found it's treatment of rushes especially wanting. This book has made it to the field with me only a few times and was seldom used then. The most redeeming quality of this book is it's size, which can easily fit into a back pocket, but when it's taken out you will probably not be able to key the more difficult and uncommon graminiods found in the U.S.
Good book. Great sketches.......2005-11-03
Decent book, the sketches are very helpful for attempting to key out species.
alright.......2005-08-07
great drawings depicting mst abundant species although they just go to descriptions for the more rare species.
good price, good on grasses less on sedges and rushs.
Best Reference for the price.......2004-08-13
I have owned this book for 10 years. I think it is a great little book! It is easy to bring in the field and it covers most species I encounter in the northeast. The plates and descriptions are not always on the same pages so you have to make sure you are referencing to the correct plate number and it does not illustrate all plants listed. You need to have the fruit of the plant to use this reference.
Quick! But accurate?.......2001-12-22
This book travels well and with the index dog-eared makes for quick and dirty referencing (espeically of Fam Graminae).
But I found a few of the plates, although well illustrated, confusing (i.e. determining the key number associated with the image of a particular flowering head). If you are looking for a thorough reference for Genus Carex don't look here.

How to identify 135 of the most common species of North American grasses, sedges, and rushes, with their economic and ecological importance.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book.......2007-08-29
I think this book is the best book on grass identification for most of us. You will actually be able to identify most of the grasses you run into. It is not a treatise on grass ecology.
Fantastic Book.......2006-06-19
I am a former student of Mrs. Brown, from her Botany class at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. This guide is outstanding, and her original illustrations are genuine. As of the time of the original publication, there was absolutely nothing at all to guide students to identify grasses. Other guides copied the concept, but Lauren's is still the pioneer in this field.
Finally!!!.......2006-02-25
As a working environmental biologist I must frequently record vast lists of species I encounter in the field. While eductaed in most plants and animals I have always put the grasses into a mental compartment of "troublesome" plants. This book provides clear and immensely helpful idenitifcation guides to a group of plants that are both common and difficult, for even the experienced, to distinguish. I now carry it as a part of my regular set of references for both the field and in-house identification. Grasses are such an important group of plants that many of us find confusing and difficult to identify. This book has made the individual species of grasses more accesible for all who use it. Any ecologist or budding amateur will benefit from the easy reading and pertinent information in this book. A further understanding of ecology and food resources for specific taxa is now more easily obtainable. I have waited for a book like this for a long time.
Useable, but flawed.......2002-07-20
As another review noted the range of this book is limited, from Minnesota to Kentucky and Maryland south, and north to Maine, although some of the grasses are more widespread. The copyright date is 1979 and while that does not disqualify it, it has not been updated. It suffers from 1) poor reproduction of the line drawings which are supposedly "as beautiful as they are exact" - they aren't either in this edition, being too small and with line details running together to show nothing but a black blob in many cases, and 2) no photographs, which I have come to expect of any decent field guide nowadays (especially in the absence of GOOD line drawings!). Also, the grasses are organized "by visual similarity, not always by taxonomic grouping." I'd prefer the latter.
On the plus side it has a useable key and often interesting information is presented for a species. I'll keep this book, but I would have bought something else had I known!
Good for Beginners.......2001-08-20
This has got to be best "first book" generally available for anyone with the least passing interest in wild plants to buy and use to discover the spectacular world of sedges and rushes, as well as grasses, especially if you are thinking about looking more carefully at wild plants in the northeast. It marked--and sparked-- the very beginning of my own personal interest in botany, guided my first field trips into the New Jersey Pine Barrens, led me to a botanical club and courses in sedge identification, and ultimately opened up the world of botany to me. I was so excited I wanted to call the author and thank her for writing this book.
Book Description
Grasses have been extremely important in California, with its rolling grass-covered hills and the green-to-gold seasonal cycle of many native grasses. This convenient pocket guide surveys the range and provides identification keys for the common introduced and native grasses.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Quality Reprint - Marginally Useful.......2007-04-30
This small book documents many non-native grasses and a few native grasses found in California. However, it's reprint as a field guide is marginally useful. Some of the cross-referenced graphics don't exits. The book is visually uncomfortable to read because of inconsistent text formatting and line crowding. Most illustrations and all of the photographs are reproduced too small.
Adequate for grass identification, but a little outdated........1999-06-20
The book serves well for the identification of exotic grasses recently found in Southern California, 1999. However, many of the scientific names of native California bunch grasses have been reclassified in recent years. Unless you know what the new names are, the guide may not serve you well. Additional pictures would have been much more helpful for many species.

Grasses of the Texas Hill Country: A Field Guide.......2006-11-06
I use this book as my only field guide even though I'm out studying and teaching others about the tall grass prairie near Houston. I find the explanations, photos, and general tabs extremely helpful. Because I live outside of the Hill Country, I only wish that the author would do a book about the almost extinct Gulf Coast prairies.
Has errors that need correcting.......2006-05-22
I found many errors, at least 8 that were very apparent. Not knowing much about grasses I did not know if the other facts in the book were correct since the mistakes were obvious, even to me. It must have not been proof read. Some pages did not have a full picture of the plant, only the top. The pictures that were there were good.
Book Description
How do you know when you're face to face with a fringe-leaf ruellia? Is that particular flower button gayfeather or dotted gayfeather? And what about the pod clinging to your pants-could it have come from a pointed-leaf tick-trefoil?
For anyone venturing out into the wilds of Kansas and contiguous states, identifying plants just got a whole lot easier. This is the first book on Kansas wildflowers or weeds to appear in 25 years. It supersedes earlier guides not only in the number of species it includes-plus its coverage of grasses-but also in its spectacular, true-to-life color photos.
Michael Haddock has assembled a guide to 264 wildflowers along with 59 grasses, sedges, and rushes. These comprise many of the state's most common and conspicuous species-as well as some seldom encountered or listed in field guides-and include many that are found throughout the Great Plains.
Wildflowers are arranged first by dominant color groups for quick identification, then by family within each color category so that the user can compare a species with similarly colored flowers. Each entry for flower or grass includes a complete profile for any given plant: scientific name, family, common name(s), flowering period, height, distribution and habitat, life span, basic morphological characteristics, and notes on historical food and medicinal uses where applicable.
The book also features "finding aids" that allow one to narrow a specimen to a smaller number of possible matches-sometimes more quickly than by comparing it to the photos. These lists were created with the non-specialist in mind and are based on basic vegetative and floral features that are usually easy to determine.
Perfect for backpack or glove compartment, Wildflowers and Grasses of Kansas offers a wealth of quick-access information graced with color that leaps off the page, making plant identification a joy rather than a chore. It's a book guaranteed to send even chronic homebodies out into the Great Outdoors in search of these elusive blooms.

Awesome Guide for Plants that are "In Bloom"........2005-05-27
This is a fantastic book for those that love the wildflowers of the Kansas Prairie. I have not found and easier guide to help me learn and ID Kansas wildflowers. However, if you are interested in the taxonomy and ID prior to or beyond the flowering stage, of those plants that interest you, this book may disappoint you. I would not fail to recommend it to like minded associates. Peace!

for the grass enthousiast.......2007-07-18
This book has excellent detailed drawings of the whole plant, and the bloom or seed head. The descriptions of the grasses are thorough and include fair-excellent ratings on wildlife and or cattle grazing. For a native grass enthousiast or a rancher, this book is excellent.
Many grasses have similar visual attributes, though. For the average person who has no previous knowledge of grasses and no alternate source with actual photos, this resource could be confusing by itself.
GRASSES AND HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM.......2000-06-12
THIS BOOK ON GRASS IS A REAL GOOD BOOK FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN LEARNING A LOT OVER IDENTIFICATION OF GRASSES.

This is the Best Backpacking Guide for Alaska!.......2000-02-02
3 mos. in Alaska and I used this book extensively! I plotted numerous trips from multi-day trips to long "all day" hikes with the aid of this book. I did about a 3rd of the trails in this book (maybe more) and the trail descriptions are accurate. Additional information regarding lodging was extremely useful....... If you are planning a backpacking trip in Alaska, buy this book! It would have been difficult finding backpacking information without it.
Honest, Off-the-beaten-path advice, Great book.......1999-07-30
Jim Dufresne does a great job in outlining excellent hikes to take throughout Alaska. We used this book in a number of areas. He gives the backpacker's view of things, not the typical tourist's. Mr. Dufresne also wrote a great book on Glacier Bay. The only guidebook we used to kayak the area. We would have never done that area had we not come acrossed his book in Michigan where he is from.
Book Description
From the rain forests and glaciers of Southeast Alaska to the rugged mountains and tundra of the state's vast interior, this practical guide by Alaska specialist Jim DuFresne makes Alaska's pristine wilderness accessible to the novice and experienced hiker alike.
- expanded 2nd edition, thoroughly revised and updated on the trail
- a wide range of hikes, from day trips to backcountry pack and adventures
- detailed trail descriptions and two-color contour maps for every hike
- practical advice on transportation, accommodations, equipment and safety
- special illustrated section on Alaska's flora and fauna
Customer Reviews:
Covers the state, but there are better books if you day-hike.......2005-01-26
If you're going to Southcentral Alaska (i.e., anywhere within 100 or so miles of Anchorage, including the Kenai Peninsula) a much more comprehensive and useful book is 55 Ways to the Wilderness in Southcentral Alaska by Helen Niehauser (sp?). Unlike 55 Ways, Dufresne's book does cover the whole state, but it lists only a small number of hikes, and they are all multi-day trips, some of them requiring good route-finding skills. It also appears that Dean Littlepage's (sp?) book on hiking in Alaska has statewide coverage and lists many more hikes than this book, though I have only thumbed thru the TOC of that one. On the other hand, Dufresne knows his stuff, writes engagingly, and describes some renowned multi-day hikes in depth. I took a longish trip to Alaska hiking the trails he recommended and had a wonderful time.
Excellent Overview of Hiking in Alaska.......2001-03-13
This book contains sections for each geographical area of Alaska. It gives background on the area, tells you what types of permits you will need to hike, what transportation is available, etc. It also suggests several trails in each area. The book also contains a 100 page section on Alaska in general - history, facts, wildlife, transportation, etc. A great book if you want to plan a trip to Alaska but need to figure out which part of the state to go to. Not as useful if you want a lot of detail about a specific region.
