5 out of 5 stars A must for every pilot.......2007-01-14

It is a big help for the pilot who really wants to know aviation. I think all pilots should have this book as a perfect source. At the end I have to indicate my appreciations to the author who has done the best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Aviation Reference For All Experience Levels.......2004-02-25

"The Encyclopedia of Technical Aviation" is a valuable addition to the library of any pilot, or for that matter anyone interested in aviation. It is organized alphabetically, as you would expect, and has extensive explanations of most any aviation related term you can think of. As an aside, the only term I have tried to look up and have not found is "RAT" (Ram Air Temperature). It does include "TAT" (Total Air Temperature), but I was trying to find the definitive answer on how the two differ.

The lack of "RAT", though, is (by far) the exception, as the book covers most all other topics more thoroughly and concisely than any other single volume I have found. This volume would be especially useful to people upgrading to complex aircraft (especially jets) for the first time. The section discussing FMS (Flight Management System) information and use would be very helpful to pilots transitioning to their first 'glass' airplane. The book has hundreds of illustrations, and all key points requiring visual illustration seem to have an easy to grasp drawing, chart, diagram, or graph, as appropriate.

This book is useful to pilots at all levels, as it discusses the very basic things like the forces acting on an aircraft in flight, to advanced EFIS and FANS concepts. This book is a one stop reference goldmine for pilots. The chances are very high that if it isn't in here, it isn't that important for a pilot to know.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any one interested in space.......2000-04-22

Having always been interested in the space program and particularly the astronauts that flew the missions, this book is definitely one of my favourites. What makes it so interesting is that it gives you a CV on all the astronauts, and therefore anyone who has any desire to become an astronaut can begin to see what is required. In the nutshell a superb book !

    Book Description

The dream of flight is one of the oldest in human history. We read about it in ancient Greek mythology and visualize it through Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of flying machines.

The Book of Flight traces the remarkable story of the pioneers, inventors, and daring pilots who turned that dream into a reality. Based on the outstanding collections of the National Air and Space Museum, this handsome book brings to life milestones in flight history: the development of ballooning; the earliest human gliders; the Wright Brothers' first sustained flights; Charles Lindbergh's solo trip across the Atlantic; Amelia Earhart's courageous flights; Chuck Yeager's blast through the sound barrier; the Apollo astronauts' first steps onto the moon; and the building of the International Space Station.

Richly illustrated, this book takes you on an exciting journey through time. You'll watch early inventors at work, thrill to the first air races and the dogfights of World War I and II, peer inside a flying boat of the 1930s, and witness the horrific explosion of the airship Hindenburg. You'll ride in the DC-3, marvel at the technology of the stealth fighter, and experience life aboard the Space Shuttle. As you turn the pages you'll meet barnstormers and ballonists, stunt flyers and flying aces, and rocket scientists and astronauts.

More than 350 photographs and illustrations portray the development of aviation and space flight. Diagrams explain concepts such as jet propulsion and supersonic flight and depict the workings of rockets and other devices. A comprehensive glossary provides easy-to-understand explanations of technical terms.

The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, with more than eight million visitors annually, is home to the world's most famous collection of historical aircraft, rockets, and space vehicles.

        Book Description

A commanding encyclopedia of the history and principles of spaceflight-from earliest conceptions to faster-than-light galaxy-hopping
Here is the first truly comprehensive guide to space exploration and propulsion, from the first musings of the Greeks to current scientific speculation about interstellar travel using "warp drives" and wormholes. Space buffs will delight in its in-depth coverage of all key manned and unmanned missions and space vehicles-past, present, and projected-and its clear explanations of the technologies involved.
Over the course of more than 2,000 extensively cross-referenced entries, astronomer David Darling also provides fascinating insights into the cultural development of spaceflight. In vivid accounts of the major characters and historical events involved, he provides fascinating tales of early innovators, the cross-pollination that has long existed between science fiction and science fact, and the sometimes obscure links between geopolitics, warfare, and advances in rocketry.

4 out of 5 stars Handy reference guide.......2003-07-15

The Complete Book of Spaceflight by David Darling is exactly that, an encyclopedia of space exploration, from Apollo to zero gravity. I have to be honest though; I didn't read this book cover to cover. It's got 3,000 detailed listings in alphabetical order, so it's not exactly light reading material - imagine reading an encyclopedia. I have; however, been using it as a reference book for several months, and it's in that capacity that it really shines.

Darling clearly had the non-technical reader in mind when he wrote up his descriptions, as he steers well clear of jargon (in a jargon-laden industry), and I appreciate that he kept some descriptions very short. For spaceflight terms the book functions as a dictionary, and the explanations are kept to a few sentences. For other topics, the book functions more like an encyclopedia; in some cases several pages are dedicated to a single topic (Gemini Program, spacesuits, etc).

If Darling were standing in front of me, and asked me... "well, what do you think? Is it complete?" I'd have to say yes. It's complete. Everything that has anything to do with spaceflight is in there. I've found it useful to consult entries before writing up some of my own stories; especially if it's been several years since I last wrote about a subject (although some space agencies have great press material, many of the aerospace firms provide descriptions of their own programs drenched in marketing-speak).

Taking its cue from its encyclopedic parent, The Complete Book of Spaceflight is liberally sprinkled with photographs, sidebars and tables of information. Unfortunately, the pages are all black-and-white, so you don't get to see any of the images in colour. I wish the publisher could have splurged on full-colour printing - this would let the book spend equal time on your desk and coffee table (maybe they'll consider it for a future edition?).

The other problem, and this is no fault of the author, is that the business of space exploration is still unfolding. Events in the last few months would have already rewritten chunks of the book (Columbia, Rosetta), so it would be cool to see some kind of Internet site with updates.

I think you'd be happy to have The Complete Book of Spaceflight sitting on your desk or in your bookshelf, standing by to help you navigate some of the more obscure space news journals.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever printed!.......2003-01-18

For many years I have been a spaceflight enthusiast, but was often disturbed by the lack of a general, easy to read reference book. For example, what if I had hear of the LDEF satellite being retrieved by the Shuttle? What if I had never heard of the LDEF satellite? A few years ago, I would have had to search many books and probably would not find it. Now I can just flip open this encyclopedia to L and in short order find a detailed summary about LDEF (which, by the way, stands for Long Duration Exposure Facility). If I read or see on TV the astronauts going on a Shuttle mission, how do I know who they are? Just look them up. If I hear about a deep-space probe launched by a Proton rocket, I can look up the probe and the Proton.

You might say this is good if you are a spaceflight enthusiast who sometimes needs a reference handy, but what about the average person? For them, it is ten times more useful. If you hear about an aspect of spaceflight and it's just technical jargon ( "Boilerplate? What's that?" or "Trajectory?") or would like to know what the different Apollo missions accomplished, this is the book to get.

The author keeps all of his information interesting and concise and so far, after two months or so of ownership, I have not found one single thing left out. Also, useful information can be gained by just thumbing through the book. ("Aerogel? Never heard of that. I'll read its entry.")You might discover just looking through the book who John Stapp was, or what an aeolipile was, or why the Soviets never made it to the moon, or just what they do at the Goddard Spaceflight Center (and, for that matter, who Goddard was).

        BUY THIS BOOK, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there is anything you ever wanted to know about spaceflight, whether you work for NASA or have never heard of the space shuttle, this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars People who actually travel should buy Lonely Planet.......2005-06-21

Coming to Argentina for a month, I bought this guide book and a few others (Lonely Planet was the best) in advance to try to get a general idea of what to do. Simply put, this book sucks. It has a tiny list of places to eat and see for how huge Buenos Aires is, seems to not have the most useful travel information and tips, and is out of date on a few of its recommended destinations. More than that, its poorly organized, not really offering itineraries or good suggestions, but rather just displaying a few possible destinations in no real order and with no particular travel audience in mind, except maybe business travelers or people with loads of money to spend who dont mind spending their time figuring it out on their own because the guide is worthless.

Lonely planet was way better, it had more suggestions and a more coherent feel. It was also bigger, it just has more. It also had better maps and even some photos, so you could get a glimpse of an area you might want to check out.
I'm done with fodors, I doubt I'll buy their books ever again.

2 out of 5 stars One of my least favorite travel books.......2005-03-21

I am an avid reader of travel books and travel quite a lot. This book was not helpful to me at all for my up-coming trip to Argentina. It was difficult to follow or locate places to visit. Also, the websites listed frequently did not "work". I wish I had my money back!

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs some basic improvements.......2001-06-12

I used this book as my main "get-around" guide during my vacations in Argentina. The book has an excellent section on travel tips which I found very useful, specially the "Smart Travel Tips" section.

But some of the maps of Buenos Aires in the book have the locations wrong. I would say most of the maps need revision; I always found a mistake. My advice is to have a back up, maybe a good tourist map which you can find almost anywhere for free on hotels or tourist centers.

Also, the phone listed in some of the attractions are wrong. For example, I wanted to arrange a reservation for one of the tango shows listed on the book (by the way, do not miss them for anything in the world!!!), but the phone numbers were wrong also.

The book overall is good, plus they have sections on other parts of Argentina, which makes the book very practical if you plan to travel the country, but again the best advise is to have a backup guide (and map), specially for Buenos Aires.

5 out of 5 stars The most complete travel guide out there for Argentina.......2000-12-19

I read every guidebook I could find before visiting Argentina with my family two years ago and then moving here for a year last July.

This is by far the most complete guide I've seen, with lots of helpful, realistic information about where to go, what to do (and what not to do) and where to stay all over this country -- not just in Buenos Aires. Even after living here for months we still pull it out from time to time.

              Don't leave home without it.
