Book Description
This invaluable book provides an illustrated ecology of eastern seashore habitats, including the ocean and continental shelf, the intertidal zone, sand dunes and beaches, and salt marshes.
Donald D. Cox uses nontechnical terminology in order to provide clear references for the general public as well as professional and amateur naturalists and students. He explores the origins of the oceans, tides, wind belts, and land plants and includes useful illustrations for aid in identification.
Most significantly, this guide brings together a wide range of information relative to ocean and seashore ecosystems. Cox includes the types of plants that grow near the seashore; adaptations that help plants survive in seashore habitats; poisonous, medicinal, and edible plants of the ocean and seashore; seasonal changes in the seashore habitat; and methods of naming plants and the folklore of common names.
The author also provides complete and accurate details for those readers who are interested in collecting plants and preserving plant collections. The final chapter offers non-technical investigations, activities, and projects. Conservation and habitat preservation are emphasized throughout the book.

Customer Reviews:
Well written but light on content........2007-05-24
This is well written, like most most Lonely Planet country guides. I read through the pertinent sections for countries I was planning to visit, and while there were suggestions for each major city, there was little depth. Maps are also on the skimpy side. "Central Europe" may not be representative of the several regional Europe guides Lonely Planet has recently released, but its coverage is very brief for a number of countries. For example, "Central Europe" has fewer pages devoted to the entire CZ Republic than the CZ Republic guide has devoted to Prague alone.
So this guide may serve you well if you are on a driving or backpacking vacation without having done a lot of background research; you could pull it out to see the one-paragraph-highlights of the major city you are approaching.
But if you have a more specific itinerary, I'd instead suggest getting the books to match specific cities and maybe a road atlas if you are driving.
Neutral.......2007-05-20
I found the book to be too much of a repeat. It had incorrect information (the Munich card was discontinued the first of the year and announced last year), Munich internet cafe at trainstation is closed, another one is now 24x7 - all for over a year.
Train connection information is limited at best.
Does not give the NAMES of the bus-tram-subway stops in any city.
Disability access information is very lacking in this book and series. I wonder does LP have a writer with a movement disability?
I am usually a fan of lonely planet books but this one felt like a money and space waster.
Great general guide.......2007-03-30
This book is really good if you don't want to buy individual books for each country you are visiting.
It has information on travel to and from each country, sights to see, accommodation, food and other interesting cultural references.
It has been a great planning tool for my upcoming trip.

helpful guidebook.......2007-07-13
This book provided a good introduction to the city of Edinburgh, though the part I used the most and found most helpful was the map section in the back. The maps are very detailed and were extrememly useful to me as I navigated the streets of the city.
Great book and major overhaul.......2002-02-08
Not only is this book witty, it covers all the city sights and is very useful. This book is written by a different author from the first edition and the change is phenomenal. This book is definitely recommended - the colourful festivals section is totally cool.
Unfortunately, this books lacks the quality of other LP's........1999-10-13
This guide to Edinburgh unfortunately lacks the quality we're used from Lonely Planet. I couldn't taste any commitment of the author to the subject, it almost looks like that the author wrote the guide during an afternoon visit. Surprisingly, many very interesting features of Edinburgh are not included, like the Botanical Gardens. Many other features are decribed too briefly. When looking for a guide of the town, step into a local bookstore en look for the locally issued handbook of Edinburgh, published bij Mercat Press. It's good souvenir too.

Lonely Planet Central Europe: Stretched Too Thin.......2006-09-21
Naturally, because of the number of countries this book covers, it is far less detailed about any one country than Lonely Planet guides covering single countries or a smaller number of countries. Still, for my purposes--a 15-day motorcoach tour including Frankfurt, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, and Prague, with just a day and a half or so in each city--it proved adequate. Few people will have room enough in their carry-on or checked luggage to carry a book for each country visited during such a tour, so one is stuck with a single multi-country guidebook.
I don't understand why Lonely Planet included Switzerland and Slovenia in this book. If one is traveling to Krakow or Prague, one usually doesn't travel to Switzerland during the same trip.
My basis for comparison was the Lonely Planet guide to Belgium. Belgium's a small country and the guidebook covered just Belgium, so the editors had room for all kinds of fascinating descriptions and inset articles providing detail, such as several articles about beer styles, breweries, and top pubs, battlegrounds, and the scatalogical nicknames Belgians have for people of other cities. That was the best guidebook I've ever used.
Travel Guide.......2006-08-16
Bought Lonely Planet's Central Europe guide. Good and fast service. Will use same supplier in future if needed.
Unstatisfied.......2005-09-11
My boyfriendand I travel a lot, and we usually take a lonely planet along with us.
The Central europe one, we've only used it for the Check Republic. It was alright but we think that the tips you usually get in this guide seemed to be missing. For the basics is fine, but we weren't totally satisfied with it. We understand that is not only about one country, that includes other's as well and the information is shortened, but anyway,it was of help only to a point.
We hope this information is of help for you,
kind regards
Lucila Lauda and Ulrik Bechtold
Mediocre Guide, but there really isn't anything else.......2004-12-07
There aren't too many guides out there specific to Central Europe. The book was helpful for general reference but, lacked any good detail for traveling. The maps were somewhat helpful, but always seemed to be just limited enough so it didn't show where you wanted to go. The book is great for the tourist that doesn't want to get away from touristy places. If you want to go local this book is not helpful. And what is it about travel books? When are they going to make a travel book that you can seperate out the sections you want? If you don't want to carry around some 10 lb brick of a book and only the sections you need. I know the technology is out there.
Lots of Countries, Little Information.......2001-12-19
I have been a faithful consumer of Lonely Planet products for the last five years. However, this collection does little more than offer superficial information on every country in Central Europe. If you want to go anywhere besides the capitals and most well-known tourist "traps", forget it. I was particularly dissapointed with the book's treatment of Germany and Switzerland. Very vague, very minimal. If you want to visit any of the countries in Central Europe, buy the Lonely Planet Guide to that country or look for a different publisher. Sorry guys, this one doesn't go in my travel bag.

Customer Reviews:
Good little book.......2004-12-11
This book is small and compact and had plenty of travel type words and phrases in it. Though some of the words and phrases are ones I would never use, I know that would be true of any phrase book. The good is it is small and easy to use. The bad is I didn't feel some of the phrases and words for traveling were that useful. For example "what's the next station?" if you can't figure that one out then you shouldn't be traveling. A better phrase would be "what's the next stop" then it would apply to all forms of travel, bus, train and metro and would be more helpful.

Mostly Useful.......2000-12-02
I found the phrase book to be very handy in some languages, but in other languages, it didn't seem to be so thorough. I was in Central and Eastern Europe for four months and mostly used the book when I was eating out. It's a good source for vegetarians. I used t occasionally when asking directions as well and found my way around fairly well using the book. In less "touristy" areas the book didn't include as much information and I was left to my own devices.
