Crocodiles and Alligators
ASIN: 0816057141 |
Book Description
Perceived for too long as predatory killers, crocodilians face their gravest danger--extinction--with little human help and sympathy. As this volume proves, alligators and crocodiles can be extremely fascinating. Examine this creature's anatomy to see why it makes such a fine hunter: its almost fully submerged body remains nearly invisible, its slit eyes help it see in the dark and judge distance precisely, and its tough skin protects it against the salt water. Many societies viewed crocodiles with awe because of their power and size, and even made them a part of their folklore and religion. Information on origins, evolution and distribution, courtship, reproduction, and many individual species paint a thorough portrait. Maps of their habitats, disappearing swiftly because of environmental damage, trace their presence worldwide, and excellent color photos bring these sometimes scary reptiles up close and personal. Blandford 192 pages, 40 color illus., 80 b/w illus., 6 x 9.

The General Care and Maintenance of Common Kingsnakes (The Herpetocultural Library)
ASIN: 059518006X |
Book Description
A very special young adult nature novel about the life and adventures in survival of a North Carolina king snake, from the time of his hatching until he becomes adult. The story shows the way he lives, how he catches and eats his prey (including other snakes, even poisonous ones), his value in the balance of nature and the fascinating events of his life, shedding new light and understanding about the lives of snakes, which, despite their value to man, are so often misunderstood and deliberately killed just because of what they are or what they are perceived to be.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK ! ...........2005-07-19
I love this book its an interesting blend of natural history and great storytelling. Its for young adults but people of all ages will enjoy this book.
Interesting if you like snakes.......2000-07-25
In this book, you follow a king snake as it hatches, goes on its first hunt, and winds up in life threatening situations. The simple vocabulary and short length of the book makes it more ideal for kids. It's also very specific on the species of prey the king snake feeds on, so you might wind up learning about frogs or whatever as well. It is very interesting and informative, but may seem boring to those who want a more action-packed story.
Book Description
Crocodilians is the scientific name for crocodiles, alligators, gharials and caimans. Collectively they area walking, breathing link to the dinosaurs that roamed the Earth 240 million years ago. And they look even more fierce as long as a pickup truck, and with giant mouths full of razor-sharp teeth.
Loathed for their eating habits and adored for their skins, alligators and crocodiles were hunted almost to extinction. But thanks to some creative conservation efforts the status of crocodilians has improved dramatically. Even though some populations are thriving, others are still at risk. Eight species remain on the endangered list, and some hover on the edge of extinction.
Alligator and Crocodile Rescue profiles the major programs and people around the world who are active in the conservation efforts to help these animals:
- Rene Hedegaard founded Denmark's Krokodille Zoo, which breeds and cares for 70 crocs from 19 species
- Christine Brewton is a member of Louisiana Fur and Alligator Advisory Council, which actually protects wild gators and their habitat
- Yosapong Temsiripong is a conservationist from Thailand who works to introduce captive-bred Siamese crocodiles into the wild.
Illustrated with 50 color photographs,
Alligator and Crocodile Rescue covers the people, the issues and the challenges involved in preserving a future for endangered wildlife.
About the Firefly Animal Rescue series:
The Firefly Animal Rescue identifies endangered and threatened species and what is being done to protect them. Combining lively, accessible text and stunning color photographs, each book provides a detailed overview of the species, describing its characteristics, behavior, habits, physiology and more.
"These attractive books are a call to action... fascinating readable accounts."
- School Library Journal
"Succinct introductions to the science and practice of wildlife conservation... written in accessible, lively language."

Book Description
Ã, Ã, Ã, Lucretia Mott is a genuine and underacknowledged heroine of America's early years, a woman of fierce integrity and quiet strength who played a critical role in both the anti-slavery and the woman's rights movements. In a book that combines an engaging human story with scrupulous historical research, Dorothy Sterling brings Mott to life for young readers.
Ã, Ã, Ã, The daughter of a Nantucket sea captian, Lucreatia Mott exhibited, from her earliest years, an extraordinary confidence and eloquence. As an adult, she dared to speak out to all-white, all-male audiences when women were treated as second-class citizens. She refused to be silenced when she was attacked by protestors or when meeting halls where her organizations were to gather were burned down. In her later years, Mott became an advisor to presidents and a colleague to such activists as William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Sojourner Truth. She was one of the most longstanding, respected, and effective voices in the movements she had helped to pioneer.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for historical facts.......2001-08-14
This book is about Lucretia Motts life. Much of the book is taken from her diary or historical documents. The book allowed the reader to experience her life of hardships and struggles to give women more rights. The book would be a good selection for upper elementary teachers to use as a read aloud.
Book Description
Inside you will find amazing-but-true stories about: The frog that's a ventriloquist Snakes that hear with their tongues Mokele-Mbembe, the living dinosaur Giant crocodiles the size of a car And crocs that honk when ready to hatch The lizard that walks on water The largest amphibian in nature, the flying dragon, the strange reptile with three eyes, and much, much more.

Give it to the kids and they'll love it!.......2001-02-07
Many adults will be familiar with the cartoons of Ripley's Believe It Or Not! that used to appear in many newspapers. This book contains some facts about reptiles, but many adults may find that it is a bit on the short side and many of the drawings don't seem to resemble the style of those that were found in the paper.
It is still a good book and anyone who gives it to a child in upper primary school will find that their soon enthralled. Many kids love dinosaurs, frogs and lizards, so facts about weird ones are right up their alley.
ripley's Beleive it or not-Reptiles, lizards, and prehistori.......2000-04-04
I liked this book alot. It is full of cool and interesting things. I liked this book because it was filled with stuff i like. For example if you like strange animals or weird disformed creatures you would love this book. The other Ripley's books arre like this, they give you interestin facts about strange happenings/ or things.Even though it is short it is a good book to fill in your empty time with.

Book Description
Poison Frogs are among the most poisonous animals in the world, but how have they, and other amphibians, adapted to become so successful? The series explores how some of our favorite animals are uniquely adapted to their environment. Each book looks at the various ways in which different species have adapted to their surroundings and covers habitat, defenses, camouflage, and the way animals find food.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting but some problems.......2006-07-03
Patagonia is of course a large area and trying to cover it in a single book is a challenge. The author made that harder by including topics that aren't really "Patagonia" and this has helped to create a book that is larger than I would want to carry. There is a lot of space dedicated to Buenos Aires and Santiago, presumably because a foreign visitor might spend time there as well as in places further south. But the book space could have been better used sticking to the point. The author includes the Chilean Lake District under the "Patagonia" banner, which most Chileans don't seem to think is appropriate (unless they are marketing something in the Lakes, and want the Patagonia cachet). There is mention of Cochamó (east of Puerto Montt) and although elsewhere in the book much is made of the Butch Cassidy connection to Patagonia, nothing is said about how Cochamó played into the lives of the Wild Bunch, since this place was visited often by them and served as the port from which their cattle were shipped to northern Chile. I was pleased to see our store (World's End) mentioned for Puerto Natales, but surprised to see the author's mention of high-speed internet. When we did have some PCs for client use (no longer - that was prior to my arrival in 2001) they were certainly low-speed. Anyway, for the past several years there have been many decent ciber-café places in town. There are other errors surrounding Natales, including the description of the post office being at the southwest corner of the plaza (it's to the east of the plaza). The name of Last Hope Sound is improperly associated with Spanish colonial governor Sarmiento de Gamboa in the Natales chapter (it was Ladrilleros who did the exploring and naming). And throughout the rest of the book there is similar (and crazier) evidence of fact-checking shortcomings. Some serious and significant information about Ruta 40 (Argentine side) is in error regarding distances and fuel availability. For example, the book says Bajo Caracoles is the only gas for nearly 500 km, but in one direction it is just 128 or so km to fuel (at Perito Moreno) and about 336 km to fuel at Tres Lagos, in the other direction, and these fuel points have been that way for many years. Similar problems plague this book, but it still has a lot of useful material, inaccuracies notwithstanding.
