4 out of 5 stars Helps you figure out where you'd like to go.......2007-09-24

If you're wanting to plan a trip outside the city, this guide helps orient you to all the options. While I didn't use the suggestions on Hotels (too short a list)...it did help me decide where I wanted to go. If you've already decided on a destination, this book won't be that helpful.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-18

I visit England frequently. I have an earlier edition of this book which I find to be very useful, even now. The new version leaves out a lot of the good places that were in the old book and it lacks credibility. I have a hard time taking any of it seriously when it tells me that an English pint is 16 ounces. Anyone who is serious about English beer knows that an English pint is 20 ounces.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Day Trips !!!!.......2007-01-06

If you are looking for day trips outside of London, this book is great!!! Gives you everything you need to know.I would highly recommend it!

      5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2006-11-07

I studied this book trying to decide which day trips we should do. I loved the handy chart comparing the sites. It is very specific and helpful.

      4 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-08-12

Only 25 out trips; however there is a lot of information about them including when they are open and how to get there even by public transportation. It also notes how long it takes to get there and how long you have to walk from a train station. Maps of the 25 places are included, which look quite thorough. I plan to use it the next time I am in London early next year.

      4 out of 5 stars Convenient.......2007-09-13

These guides are small, convenient and helpful. The favorite thing I like about this book is the foldout map of the Tube in the front cover, as well as the larger foldout map of London snapped into the back cover. There is very little bulk to this very helpful guide. I highly recommend it!

      5 out of 5 stars indispensible book.......2007-05-29

This book was very helpful to me in planning my trip to London. The map included is very helpful as well. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fits in your pocket!.......2007-05-02

I just got back from a five day trip to London showing my wife the sights on her visit. This book was our primary guide for two major reasons.

      1. The day by day itineries show the must sees, including where the must see's are in the museums. If you know you're going to be there for a few days, you might wish to regroup them a bit (moving some things from one day to another) to ease a bit of travel, but are excellent overall.

      2. The whole thing fits in your back pocket! Most travel guides now are encyclopedias you leave in the hotel room. This one with its convenient fold out high level street plan and Underground map made getting around very easy. The pull out detailed map in the map offers even more detail once you're downtown.

Also, the restaurant guides were superb, important when the pound is $2.00! We really like the Audley and Rules.

BTW, you can also get to Paddington station from Heathrow via the "Heathrow Connection". It's half the price of the Heathrow Express and only takes ten minutes more time. Essentially it's the local train on the same line.

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Guide to London.......2006-12-30

Though it is smaller than your average travel guide, I think that this is a great book that shows how to explore London broken down on a day-by-day basis, like the name of the book implies. There are great pictures (probably my favorite part of any travel guide), as well as a good map of London and its Underground system map that are essential for getting around the city. It is well worth purchasing before traveling across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR PLANNING YOUR VACATION.......2006-02-27

I really liked this book and it helped tremendously when planning our recent trip to London. I've been there a couple of times before but this was the first time with small children and this book, along with a few others, proved valuable. It certainly provided great budget advise without going too bare bones but more importantly, we found it to provide fair and objective reviews when it came to hotels and restauants. Also, it gave fairly up-to-date information which was a big plus over some other travel books concerning attractions, hours of operation and prices. Aside from the usual sections of Accomodations, Eateries, and Sightseeing, there were chapters on What's New, The Best of London from $95 a Day, and Planning an Affordable Trip. I especially liked the insider tips it provided in certain sections. My husband liked the detailed foldout map of London the book included but was disappointed it only covered such a small area (from parts of Mayfair to just past the City of London). I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for great travel advise - budget or not.

3 out of 5 stars The book has no pictures!.......2006-02-21

This book was one of 3 we took on our trip last year. It was the worst of the 3 and the information was somewhat dated. Forget going to Londan at the $90 a day price tag. You will hate it, even if your are cheap, like me. Cheap London hotels listed in book are dumps and mostly unsafe. Pros: The book is small and wont take up rome in your back pack. It has some address and numbers if you want to call a place. Although the price of a call is not worth it. It had the best cheap resturants of any of the 3 books. If you dont know, London is expensive. Cons: The book has no pictures! I never trust what the writters of the guides print without pictures. I may feel differently about a place. The book is paper back and pages are of cheap paper.

If you can only get one book, make this the last option. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for budget travel.......2006-05-22

This was my first London travel guide, the one I bought when I had never before been to the UK, when I knew very little of London, and when I was on a student budget. It's been an exceedingly valuable resource ever since I purchased it in 2000. London is notoriously expensive, but this guide manages to seek out restaurants and hotels that don't break the bank. I especially appreciated the specific section on restaurants which are open until the wee hours- essential when arriving late and fighting jet lag. London being a large city of distinct neighborhoods, this guide is organized by neighborhood, and discusses specific hotels and restaurants within each neighborhood.

This book has many virtues, but by far its best section, in my opinion, is the section on sightseeing and entertainment bargains. London has many fine musuems which charge no admission. Its churches offer a wealth of affordable, sometimes free, concerts. This guide doesn't just explain which well-known sights can be enjoyed at a low cost, it also introduced me to a whole range of sights and events I didn't know existed.

I've been to London a number of times since my first trip, but I still reach for this guide. A very valuable resource.

      5 out of 5 stars great resource!.......2000-09-22

i used the 1998 version of this book when i went to london and i have no doubt but that this one is just as good. it gave us the scoop on where to stay, how to negotiate a good bed and breakfast rate, and where to get good food at reasonable prices. it also lays out manageable itineraries, gives you the dish on when to go to which sights, and which ones are best left unseen. really, really well done!

I just returned from my trip to London, and I must admit that I relied on this travel guide over my other two. The book was well laid-out, came with a handy map, and was quite honest in its assessment on London and things to do there. I do wish its recommendations on the pubs of London -- the best place to eat cheap AND soak up the local flavor of the city -- were expanded. Other than that, this is THE book to get if you're visiting London on a reasonable-but-not-too-cheap budget.
