Review of Thermo by Klotz.......2005-09-26
An insightful book. Easy to read when compared to other books of similar subject. Flows through topics smoothly.
Well explained - a pleasure to read.......2003-10-22
I started to read this book in order to figure out how to calculate the heat released by various chemical reactions. I ended up spending a week reading the first 10 chapters (roughly half the book) and working through the majority of the exercises simply because the book was such a pleasure to read. I feel that the material is presented in a logical fashion, the physical meaning of various mathematical functions is well explained, the exercises are set at the correct pitch and lead to a deeper understanding of the theory, and sufficient references are given so that the reader knows where to go to obtain further material (thermochemical data in my case).
About a decade ago i completed a postgraduate maths/physics degree so I suppose that may give me an "edge" over some readers. However, the book begins with an introduction to calculus involving many variables which is really the only maths used in the entire book.
The book is certainly simple - you won't find much mention of statistical mechanics, for example - but I believe it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of chemical thermodynamics.
There is a companion to this book containing answers to many of the exercises.

The Practice of Reservoir Engineering (Revised Edition) (Developments in Petroleum Science)
ASIN: 0976511363 |
Book Description
Reservoir Simulations Handbook is one of the best tools that the reservoir engineer has at his disposal, allowing the engineer and geologist to create the most efficient and cost effective plan possible for drilling and production. If your simulation is faulty, too general or inaccurate in any way, this can affect the production, cost and time spent at the site, which affects the bottom line. Any of these problems can happen when a simulation is generated from a program that is outdated, an unproven method or even a set of equations that use too much guesswork. This book offers a practical, real-world approach to solving reservoir simulation problems. As a reference for the engineer in the field, it offers a new approach using more mathematical models for the engineer to devise his or her own approach to a particular problem.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Basic Methods for the Biochemical Lab elucidates proven lab procedures and practical hints for research in analytical and preparative biochemistry, as well as summarizing key data in numerous tables. To further emphasize the practical aspects and to minimize the text, theoretical introductions into the methods are mostly omitted.
The chapters cover: quantitative methods (proteins, nucleic acids, phospholipids and carbohydrates), electrophoresis (several polyacrylamide and agarose systems, 2D-PAGE, detection methods and affinity electrophoresis), chromatographic protocols (thin-layer chromatography, GPC, IEC, affinity chromatography, HPLC), immunochemical protocols (hapten-carrier and enzyme conjugation, immunization and antibody purification, immune affinity chromatography, ELISA), centrifugation (differential and density gradient centrifugation for cells and cellular fractions), radioactivity (labeling and counting), buffers (buffer properties and compositions).
In additional chapters, tables compile a broad array of useful information, e.g. SI units conversion factor, detergent, protein and nucleotide data, and the basic principles of statistics and enzyme and receptor kinetics are reviewed.
This first English-language edition of a successful German-language manual will be a valuable resource for students and experts in biochemistry, biotechnology and biomedical laboratories.

Customer Reviews:
MOON HANDBOOKS ALWAYS GOOD !!.......2006-06-21
Moon Handbooks have always been useful to me on any trip. They not only cover all the usual stuff you find in a guidebook, but also the unusual and out-of-the-way things you'd otherwise miss. Unless you stay in a condo or all-inclusive hotel and never leave, you should always take a MOON GUIDE with you!
Uninspired, Out of Date. There are better guides........2006-04-09
Moon is going head to head with Lonely Planet and Rough Guides and it losses badly.
Do not let the 2004 publishing date fool you. The information in this guide was gathered in 2001/2002. Buenos Aires prices have seriously changed since then and this guide has nothing about these changes. All of the hotel and restaurant rates in this book are irrelevant. Some prices have changed up to 300%! For example, in Buenos Aires, the NH City Hotel is quoted in the guide as being $97 per night. When I went there I was quoted $270 per night. A serious difference.
For all of Buenos Aires the guide lists only 14 restaurant recommendations. Imagine a guide for New York City with on 14 restaurant recommendations! Then, restaurant recommendations are poor selections in comparison to other guides. The writing about restaurants (and accommodations) vacillates between being trite and meaningless. For example, one of the 14 restaurants the guide recommends is a pizzeria (go figure) which says... "unchanged since the days of Carlos Gardel, whose photos line the wall." That's it. From that you will make a decision?
Also, the maps in this guide are very difficult to use. Unlike other guides that give you separate maps for restaurants and accommodations, this guide crams everything on one map: hotels, restaurants, sights to see, etc. You spend far too much time trying to figure where something is ... folks, there are much guides than this one. In short - avoid this guide.
If you are ONLY going to Buenos Aires, then, just for B.A. then take Fodor's `Argentina' (4th edition). Fodor's has very good maps of the city and it has great recommendations for accommodations. Caveat: only use Fodor's `Argentina' for Buenos Aires, outside of the capitol Fodor's crashes and burns. The best all around Argentina guide is Rough Guide Argentina 2005. This guide is Not Recommended.
All-purpose guidebook for business and recreational traveler.......2005-02-08
Moon Handbooks Argentina is an all-purpose guidebook for business and recreational travelers to this great South American nation. Suggested plans for exploring the entire nation in twenty-one days, traveling with focus on nature or overland routes, historical tours, a fifteen-day art and architecture viewing, a tastebud excursion through wine country and more are just the beginning. Sections point out the highlights and quality resorts in various different provinces, as well as the most effective means of travel, and offer capsulized background information on Argentina's land, flora, fauna, cultural landscape, environmental issues, history, economy, and more. A listing of internet resources rounds out this recommended guide for anyone determined to see Argentina's beauty with their own eyes.
A lot of good information.......2004-11-14
I really like this guide. They spend a lot of time giving you useful information instead of flashy, full color photos. The photos can be nice sometimes, too, but if you really just need detailed information for planing a trip, I recommend this guide.
Book Description
From dining in the "gourmet ghetto" of Palermo and dancing in San Telmo's best tango bars to wandering in the legendary Pampas, land of the gaucho, Moon Handbooks Buenos Aires is the guide to the best the city has to offer, both on and off the beaten path. Practical information includes suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights, plus essentials on dining, transportation, and accommodations for a range of budgets. Complete with details for exploring Montevideo's new Ruta del Vino (wine route), lounging on Uruguay's glamorous beaches, and taking in Argentina's burgeoning art scene, Moon Handbooks Buenos Aires gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
Customer Reviews:
Best yet.......2006-11-07
I have traveled to most all "corners" of the world and purchased many guidebooks. This one is without a doubt the best yet. The prices quoted are about 2/3 of actual but the economy in Argentina changes quickly at times and all are in relation to inflated costs per vendor. My congratulations to the writer and thank you for making my trip so much better!
This guide is in desperate need of an update. Not Recommended. .......2006-04-09
Of the five Argentina guides I brought with me (3/2006) this guide is the least useful and, the most out of date. Do not let the publishing date fool you; the information in this guide comes from research done in 2001/2002.
In the past four years much has changed in Buenos Aires. None of the hotel rates given in this guide are anywhere near what is being charged today. There are hotels that charge triple what this guide quotes.
The writing is uninspired and reads like something that you would read a government office of tourism. There is little information to helps you connect with the unique culture and characteristics of Buenos Aires. The maps in this guide are very difficult to use. The publisher has crammed everything on one map: hotels, restaurants, sights to see, etc. There are much better maps in other guides. The guide's recommendations for restaurants is sub-par in comparison to other guides.
For Buenos Aires, one of the best guides out is Fodor's `Argentina'. Fodor's has excellent maps of the city and it has great recommendations for both restaurants and accommodations. Caveat: only use Fodor's `Argentina' (3rd edition) for Buenos Aires, outside of the capitol Fodor's is dismal as a guide. For a great all around Argentina guide consider either Lonely Planet Argentina 2005 or Rough Guide Argentina 2005. This guide is not recommended.
Good writing, excellent layout.......2006-01-17
I just spent six weeks in Buenos Aires and used this book as a guide to my daily activities. Useful for more than just getting around, the book gives a careful, balanced view of many aspects of life in BsAs. The list of suggested readings in the back of the book shows the author's good taste. Instead of a book filled with hyperboles and hasty suggestions, you have a volume of reliable, thoughtful observations. An excellent companion to the beautiful city.
The best of a small bunch.......2003-12-21
South American guidebooks aren't as plentiful as those from other parts of the world, so I often have to buy several to get complete information. This Buenos Aires edition from Moon Handbooks was surprising because it not only included some great information on the city, but had better information on surrounding areas like Montevideo than my other Uruguay book. Also included up-to-date hotel information that was simply missing from the others.
Book Description
From visiting Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city known as "the uttermost part of the earth," and taking the scenic ferry route from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales to hiking on Argentina's Moreno Glacier, Moon Handbooks Patagonia is the guide to the best the country has to offer, both on and off the beaten path. Practical information includes suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights, plus essentials on dining, transportation, and accommodations for a range of budgets. Complete with details for exploring the wildlife lodges of the penguin-rich Falkland Islands, staying in guest ranches in the Patagonian outback, and whale watching at the World Heritage Site of Península Valdés, Moon Handbooks Patagonia gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but some problems.......2006-07-03
Patagonia is of course a large area and trying to cover it in a single book is a challenge. The author made that harder by including topics that aren't really "Patagonia" and this has helped to create a book that is larger than I would want to carry. There is a lot of space dedicated to Buenos Aires and Santiago, presumably because a foreign visitor might spend time there as well as in places further south. But the book space could have been better used sticking to the point. The author includes the Chilean Lake District under the "Patagonia" banner, which most Chileans don't seem to think is appropriate (unless they are marketing something in the Lakes, and want the Patagonia cachet). There is mention of Cochamó (east of Puerto Montt) and although elsewhere in the book much is made of the Butch Cassidy connection to Patagonia, nothing is said about how Cochamó played into the lives of the Wild Bunch, since this place was visited often by them and served as the port from which their cattle were shipped to northern Chile. I was pleased to see our store (World's End) mentioned for Puerto Natales, but surprised to see the author's mention of high-speed internet. When we did have some PCs for client use (no longer - that was prior to my arrival in 2001) they were certainly low-speed. Anyway, for the past several years there have been many decent ciber-café places in town. There are other errors surrounding Natales, including the description of the post office being at the southwest corner of the plaza (it's to the east of the plaza). The name of Last Hope Sound is improperly associated with Spanish colonial governor Sarmiento de Gamboa in the Natales chapter (it was Ladrilleros who did the exploring and naming). And throughout the rest of the book there is similar (and crazier) evidence of fact-checking shortcomings. Some serious and significant information about Ruta 40 (Argentine side) is in error regarding distances and fuel availability. For example, the book says Bajo Caracoles is the only gas for nearly 500 km, but in one direction it is just 128 or so km to fuel (at Perito Moreno) and about 336 km to fuel at Tres Lagos, in the other direction, and these fuel points have been that way for many years. Similar problems plague this book, but it still has a lot of useful material, inaccuracies notwithstanding.
