Book Description
Cape Cod Wildflowers, the only comprehensive, Cape-specific wildflower book, is back in print, with a new preface by the authors. In the little more than a decade since the book's original publication in 1989, development has increasingly encroached on the rich indigenous flora of the Cape, eliminating purple milkweed and yellow thistle there, and lending this guidebook ever greater relevance and poignancy.
Cape Cod Wildflowers features stunning color illustrations of each Cape wildflower, grouped by habitat and complemented by appealing and informative narrative entries. Those who have never experienced the untrammeled Cape Cod lauded by Thoreau and Beston, and those who have witnessed the more recent and rapid degradation of the Cape's moors, sandplain grasslands, and barrens, will delight in this celebration of Cape Cod wildflowers. The authors address the knowledgeable as well as the novice reader who is always appreciative of, interested in, and willing and able to rise to the defense of native plants. As they wrote in their introduction to the first edition, Cape Cod Wildflowers "is an appreciation, a guide, and a plea for protection." This book is a must for Cape residents, tourists, naturalists, botanists, and wildflower enthusiasts everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely and informative.......2004-01-12
This beautiful book should be in the library of anyone who loves the open spaces on Cape Cod. It is packed wiht information that can't be found elsewhere. And that information is authoritative--the authors are botanists who really do know what they are talking about.

A Fantastic Book!.......2001-03-30
"Coastal Plants from Cape Cod to Cape Canaveral" is a wonderful addition to the botanical literature! For both novices and confirmed botanists, this book provides a great look at the plants of the Atlantic Coast. As someone who knows little about plants, this book provided me with clear and informative descriptions that I could easily use to identify the plants in my area. Obviously meticulously researched, this book is the first to provide such comprehensive coverage of the topic. The photographs are beautiful, helping to illustrate both the plants and their associated habitats. I highly recommend this book both to own and to give as a gift!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book at an excellent deal.......2007-09-12
I bought this at Half-Price Books and have been very pleased with the level of depth. No only historically informative and accurate, the inclusion of important-events are chronologically included at the very beginning and will be used from time to time throughout the text once it covers some key elements of Chinas history. The tendency for National Geographic to establish a good understanding along with respect to the ethnic diversity is well grounded through their talent and experience with professionalism. Very few books may give you as in depth understanding, such as provided through picture and good information.
Several of the writers may differ dramatically from one to another, and I suspect they were given different projects according to certain talents. Some of the writers give a genuine feel for the process of traveling, such as Robert M. Poole. The journey he undertakes through a canal stretching south to north of the country is nearly as realistic and vivid as watching a video documentary. Some of the other writers are somewhat vapid though not limited accordingly because of it, rather more directed towards facts and less visual description.
In spite of the book being visual in many respects, it does as thorough and effective a job as any book that disregards photographs. However, National Geographic is known for their outstanding photographic talent, and the writers are equally as exceptional, so you will not be surprised to find many outstanding pictures. The pages of nothing but text arent always keying in directly to the photographs (which use descriptions of their own,) and rather they act as supplement to the scenery and events. As I mentioned earlier, some points are much more historical than others.
In spite of over 20 years going by since originally published, I find this book is as equally preferable as any modern book. Many old National Geographic books are as suited as any modern day book given the information they cover is as pertinent to the subject matter from historical perspective. Documenting trends and ethnic diversity, the many things that change over time can be easily summarized by outside sources available, and should not be expected differently from the text, any more than follow-up after reading. However as I was mentioning, these books are exceptionally well covered with the subject matter and can give you a very realistic feel for China as has always been known. The book does not carry any bias and undoubtedly steers clear from the many controversial elements of China. They cover the subject from a cultural perspective and not a tourist perspective, though you will get a feel for the country the same as if you were searching through it up close. The kind of depth however is something you will probably never encounter with a short visit to the country (even a months stay,) and irregardless of your plan to do so, you will uncover much of the country that will have been inaccessible to a typical English speaker, on any level.
Many of the individuals covering this large book are not speakers of the language, and neither could they be confused for Asian. They see the country through unexposed eyes, and a new perspective, and they give as clear a view of the country as could be expected. Sit down and look through this book, and read its content. You will be pleased, however old you may be (it isn't just a picture book.) :)
The book originally should come with a map (full scale and simplified "The Peoples of China," along with a book mark which exists with a Pinyin dialect pronunciation guide printed on it (not particularly necessary, though it may help with prouncin some of the names for places.) The dustjacket is really uncessary, and I threw mine away because it was riped. The red hardbound cover looks very nice (and more modern than the dust jacket,) with gold gilt-lettering along the spine and a gold dragon the full scale length of the front-cover. Very nice, actually.
Book Description
Route 312 is the Chinese Route 66. It flows three thousand miles from east to west, passing through the factory towns of the coastal areas, through the rural heart of China, then up into the Gobi Desert, where it merges with the Old Silk Road. The highway witnesses every part of the social and economic revolution that is turning China upside down.
In this utterly surprising and deeply personal book, acclaimed National Public Radio reporter Rob Gifford, a fluent Mandarin speaker, takes the dramatic journey along Route 312 from its start in the boomtown of Shanghai to its end on the border with Kazakhstan. Gifford reveals the rich mosaic of modern Chinese life in all its contradictions, as he poses the crucial questions that all of us are asking about China: Will it really be the next global superpower? Is it as solid and as powerful as it looks from the outside? And who are the ordinary Chinese people, to whom the twenty-first century is supposed to belong?
Gifford is not alone on his journey. The largest migration in human history is taking place along highways such as Route 312, as tens of millions of people leave their homes in search of work. He sees signs of the booming urban economy everywhere, but he also uncovers many of the country’s frailties, and some of the deep-seated problems that could derail China’s rise.
The whole compelling adventure is told through the cast of colorful characters Gifford meets: garrulous talk-show hosts and ambitious yuppies, impoverished peasants and tragic prostitutes, cell-phone salesmen, AIDS patients, and Tibetan monks. He rides with members of a Shanghai jeep club, hitchhikes across the Gobi desert, and sings karaoke with migrant workers at truck stops along the way.
As he recounts his travels along Route 312, Rob Gifford gives a face to what has historically, for Westerners, been a faceless country and breathes life into a nation that is so often reduced to economic statistics. Finally, he sounds a warning that all is not well in the Chinese heartlands, that serious problems lie ahead, and that the future of the West has become inextricably linked with the fate of 1.3 billion Chinese people.
“Informative, delightful, and powerfully moving . . . Rob Gifford’s acute powers of observation, his sense of humor and adventure, and his determination to explore the wrenching dilemmas of China’s explosive development open readers’ eyes and reward their minds.”
–Robert A. Kapp, president, U.S.-China Business Council, 1994-2004

Experience China today.......2007-10-11
"China Road" is a beautifully written insider's view of China today. The author describes a variety of cities and towns in China and he provides insight into the way Chinese people think. He places the towns he visits in historical context providing the reader with an indepth understanding of this powerful country. This fascinating book is a pleasure to read.

China Road.......2007-10-05
I ordered "China Road" by Rob Gifford on 9 cd's. There was a problem with cd #3, although we did eventually get it to play partially. Disc #5 would not plat at all, even after cleaning. It was a disappointment!!
Discover the bright and no so bright aspects of China's economic miracle.......2007-10-01
This is a really cool book to get a fairly complete picture of China today. What's great and no so great and why one should not see what's happening over there as the end of business as we know it, just an evolution (though a dramatic one) of the world as we know it with.
If you like it, I'd advise "One Billion Customers" too as a more granular view on how business is condusted there.
a must read.......2007-09-19
Rob Gifford covered China for NPR for 6 years. He speaks fluent Mandarin and he made an adventurous journey across China and spoke to lots of ordinary people; truckers, cabbies, hookers, farmers, AIDS sufferers, government officials, etc.
It's a fascinating look at what Gifford refers to as "the elephant in the room." What happens in China will have a major impact on the rest of the world. As Chinese industry pumps out the products (and the pollution) the world is changing drastically for millions of Chinese peasants who are heading to urban areas to find work.
Can the Chinese government continue this surge of economic growth? If it stalls, will there be a revolt in the countryside? Gifford looks at many different issues and angles of China in this thought-provoking book.
A Delightful History Page-tuner!.......2007-09-12
This book would have deserved four stars for good writing and first-hand information, if it goes into a little more depth about China. Since it is a spinoff from the author's NPR radio reports, no one should expect scholarly work with all the details. Read this book to get an overview of modern China, and then go get other sources and books if you're really interested in China. Never take one person's views about a country and its history.
Book Description

A Great Introduction to Ancient China for Kids!.......2000-04-21
Although categorized as a book for 9-12 year olds this abundantly illustrated book was a big hit at my daughter's preschool.
Each short vignette on crafts, food, clothing, city life, inventions, etc., is accompanied by wonderful colored photographs and illustrations. An ancient Chinese fable, "The Dragon King's Key" adds drama to the facts, and as a plus for classroom use, a glossary and index are included. This book is a good starting point for getting kids to think about life in the past.

ASIN: 0892819189
Release Date: 2002-12-01 |
Book Description
The first book to explore the significance and symbolism of the sacred and secular ritual dances of Tibetan Buddhism.
⢠Lavishly illustrated with color and rare historic photographs depicting the dances, costumes, and masks.
⢠Looks at both sacred (cham) and folk (achi lhamo) forms and their role in the development, practice, and culture of Tibetan Buddhism.
From the time Buddhism entered the mythical land of the snows, Tibetans have expressed their spiritual devotion and celebrated their culture with dance. Only since the diaspora of the Tibetan people have outsiders witnessed these performances, and when they do, no one explains why these dances exist and what they really mean. Ellen Pearlman, who studied with Lobsang Samten, the ritual dance master of the Dalai Lama's Namgyal monastery in India, set out to discover the meaning behind these practices. She found the story of the indigenous shamanistic Bon religion being superseded by Buddhism--a story full of dangerous and illicit liaisons, brilliant visions, secret teachings, betrayals, and unrevealed yogic practices.
Pearlman examines the four lineages that developed sacred cham--the secret ritual dances of Tibet's Buddhist monks--and achi lhamo storytelling folk dance and opera. She describes the mental and physical process of preparing for these dances, the meaning of the iconography of the costumes and masks, the spectrum of accompanying music, and the actual dance steps as recorded in a choreography book dating back to the Fifth Dalai Lama in 1647. Beautiful color photographs from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and Pearlman's own images of touring monastic troupes complement the rare historic black-and-white photos from the collections of Sir Charles Bell, chief of the British Mission in Tibet during the life of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama.

enduring prison saga is must reading for today.......2007-07-11
I picked up this book on the advice of a friend who knew I was interested in the plight of US intel officers John Downey and Richard Fecteau, and indeed Philip Smith provides new (to me) details and insights into the captivity they shared. But in its own right, Smith's story of his incarceration as a prisoner in China should be a classic, in the sense that it will endure. In a real sense, this is the book that neither Downey nor Fecteau would write, and it honors all of them for their perservance in the face of evil. Given that the threat remains, this should be on the reading list of all military branches and some other government agencies I know. Highly recommended.
Thank a Veteran.......2006-05-11
Phil's story was personal for me: My dad is Lt Col Dayle Carlson (ret) who, with Harvey Quackenbush, went out to find Phil Smith. What an honor to have such bravery as a part of my history. It was a gripping story; how many of us can even imagine the tenaciousness required to survive solitary confinement for so many years. Thank you, gentlemen, for your service to our country. You make me proud to be an American.
Poignent, powerful and emotion filled, tears of joy/sadness........1998-11-18
It was an honor to have been a beneficairy of the democracy this man fought for. His perseverance in times we could only imagine through such excellent writing is inspiration for us all. To try to feel one fraction of his emotion is our challenge we probably could not accomplish. His spirit and disipline are unparelleld.
Colonel Smith's story begins with an unbelievable turn of events that if they weren't true, you would think they were scripted fiction. If anything could go wrong on his fateful day it did. As he takes you through the result of those misfortunes, his attention to detail puts you looking over his shoulder and wanting to lean in to help him. The feelings, pride and emotions he exhibited were enough to keep the pages turning and make you want to read faster and faster. As the events of his debacle unfold you'll find yourself wishing this wasn't history-that it was happening now and you could do something about it early on before it became his nightmare. The writing style is complete and solid without becoming too technical. It has interesting insight into the pilot and soldiers roles and duty without losing sight that it is a story of courage, faith, family and most of all hope. This is the perfect story to make us all take a step back to help us forget the little things that may be a nuisance and appreciate the big things that are taken away from some. It will make you look at all who protected us and our freedoms gratefully.

A Great Journey Into Chinese Archeology.......2000-11-11
This first of four volumes explores the archeological findings in China from over 1.7 million years ago through the Fifth Century B.C.E.. The color plates of the objects and art are excellent. The discussions and explanations of both the archeological period and the purpose of each object are thorough. The text includes descriptions of when and where ruins were discovered and excavated. This book was well worth reading and owning.

Somehow it does not jell really!.......2005-05-23
Though the author brings about some important facts like the connection between the Bon religion and Parsis somehow the book does not really jell. It could be because the author does not speak of his own experiences - one gets a teeny weenie feeling that he is writing under some duress or pressure. May be asked by Chinese Govt. not to mention the unmentionables or that the book has been edited, rather severely, by the publishers. Something is wrong somewhere! Only those who're interested in the Bon religion can refer this book! Vacuous! Ineffective! Though the subject matter is really very good.
The quest of Sham Shung.......2004-01-27
A more balanced and broader view.......2002-04-13
of Tibetan history than one often finds in Buddhist-authored books on the subject. The author combined known Near Eastern/Asian ancient and medieval history with personal observations of the land and its archaeology to arrive at some very interesting conclusions about (1) the pre-Buddhist religious history and cultures of Tibet, and (2) the development of Buddhism in this milieu. The frequent transitions in writing style, from travelogue to historical discourse and back, were sometimes awkward. But if you like books on comparative religion, anthropology, mythology, religious history, or ancient history, and are interested in Tibet, you'll have fun with this one! Overall rating: 4 stars
Interesting, but it doesn't quite work........2001-09-18
The author, a writer and oral historian with long experience in the Indian subcontinent, here describes his re-examination of the complex history of Buddhism in Tibet and India. He intersperses colorful chapters about traveling in Tibet among drier chapters on religious history. The mix does not quite work. While Allen's travel writing generally holds the reader's attention, only people with a serious interest in Asian religions would stay with the scholarly presentations all the way through. Even though I lived in South Asia for four years, I found the religious history heavy going. While the color photographs bunched in the center of the book are of good quality, I wished that they had covered more of the sites described by the author. Overall rating: three stars.
