Delightful.......2005-06-21
This book is a joy-containing not only the facts about the Medieval herbs and plants-but also charming references to the amazing character of Cadfael.
Don't be put off by negative comments-this book's a gem.
Cadfael's pictures.......2002-04-04
This is most useful as a guide to Elis Peters' novels. The index of plants is oriented toward the fictional Cadfael and his uses, rather than to mediaval practice.
The pictures are coffee table book quality.
A must for gardeners who are Brother Cadfael fans, or Cadfael fans who are gardeners, but not a serious work.
Medieval Plants and Brother Cadfael.......2000-08-17
Not only is this gorgeous books with excellent pictures of plants, it shows a deep insight into Brother Cadfael's herbarium and his respect for plants. I loved the excerpts from the many Brother Cadfael books. I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the layout of Brother Cadfael's garden and perhaps some recipes and potions. Still the authors produced a beautiful book at a reasonable price with the pages crammed with in-depth information on herbs.
Misleading Title.......1999-08-26
I believe that this book is much more of a picture book than anything else. Within the text, it describes Brother Cadfeal more than it does his gardens or how he planned them or used them. This book is nicely done but it is not worth the price if you are looking for a comprehensive reference for how to grow and use herbs. Please look somewhere else. There are many out there which hold better information.
It is a wonderful and informitive book on herbs........1999-03-08
This book was very informitive on the uses of herbs for medicines in the Middle Ages. I happen to be a fan of Cadfael and thought the pictures were wonderful. I had been doing a project on medical herbs in the Middle Ages and it was my best resource.

Book Description
This book is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated history of herbal texts throughout the world from ancient cultures through the seventeenth century.
An “herbal” by definition is a book that is descriptive of plants and the term did not come into use until the sixteenth century. The production of herbals is closely connected to the history of early printing and offers the finest examples of this art and craft. However, the earliest records of ancient Egypt, Sumer and China all reflect a tradition of works of botanicals and their medicinal properties long before printing. The author’s survey begins with a work called De materia medica written in the first century which is extant and, as the final authority on pharmacy for 1500 years, is the most important herbal ever written.
The study of herbals offers a rich history of the culture and beliefs from the folklore and science of medieval and classical worlds.

Tacky packaging.......2002-08-16
The book was in excellent condition. However, I almost returned it because the packaging was ripped and I was afraid the book might be damaged. It was wrapped up in newspaper and I could not figure out who sent it to me. (I had ordered 2 of the same book, 2 different people). No paperwork, order form, etc. The name did not match up with any order that I had placed.
Most Useful Herb Book.......1998-05-22
This is the most useful book about herbs that I own. It covers everything from medicinal uses to history to cultivation of herbs from A to Z. I refer to it when I can't find the answer elsewhere.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs.......2007-08-12
A truly informative herbal book. The uses for herbs are endless. I enjoy the quick reference this book provides.
Bset Herb Book........2006-11-06
I love this book. Not only does it tell you all about the herb it tells you what food it go's well with. I bought this book for my daughter when she started to grow her own herbs.
The Best of the Bunch.......2006-06-26
Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs is the best of the bunch. It gives a bounty of information on each of the many herbs listed: origin, uses, cultivation, lore, and much more. The illustrations, both drawings and color photos, are superb. The book does contain errors; it says, for example, that sassafras extracts are carcinogenic. But on the whole this book excels.
Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs.......2006-02-12
This book has almost every herb you can think of with sugesstions on how to grow them and use them. It's awesome.
I PRAY THAT ALL PEOPLE THAT BOUGHT THIS BOOK AND ACTUALLY STUDIED IT WILL SEE THROUGH THE ILLUSIONS OF FEARS ,.........2005-12-15
I felt sad that this information Was actually in hands of over million people, yet I know that Creator of Nature and it's powers in herbs will prove to be otherwise than described in this "book".
There's some good info in it,almost as if you give enough good to trick the public in beliving the bad.
It is as if it was written by the FDA agents themself or Allopathic Medicine so called "Modern medicine".As if it was written to "label" herbs for not more than decorative.
Almost Every herb that is truly amazing is somehow at the end of these authors "descriptions" darkened, and when you KNOW and PRACTICE herbalisam you know that iS not truth, and also I find it little "sticky" that there's a so called "miracle" drug out there that is a better choice?
Man will never conquer the VERY CREATOR OF NATURE AND IT'S POWER,and no greed will ever rule over it! So KNOW that there's NO miracle drug out there,Nature with it's powers teaches us PATIENCE and that everything needs IT'S Time to Heal. Decide for yourself, please on this book. I pray that you enrich yourself with many books out there that HONOR MOTHER NATURE FOR ALL IT'S WORTH!PEACE BE WITH YOU!

Modern enactment of the old cultures.......2005-04-28
This review applies equally to three of Peter Magubane's very similar books, "Vanishing Cultures of South Africa," published in 1998, "African Renaissance" published two years later in 2002 and "Ceremonies," published in 2003.
These books are almost unconscionably similar, with many photos in the second book either outright recycled from the first book or pictures taken in the same photo-shoots as the ones in the first book--sometimes of the very same people, in photos apparently shot moments apart. The first book is organized by tribe, while the latter is organized by categories such as dress, rites, arts, homesteads, etc. Nevertheless the books are largely the same, covering the same material, same people, with the same or similar pictures.
One can get the impression somebody just wanted to make a fast buck. In fact, a third book by Magubane, published a year later and titled "Ceremonies" seems to be almost entirely reprints from both of the prior books--with no warning to the prospective purchaser! There exist still more books by this guy, but these are the only three I bought, so I don't know exactly how thin he spreads his work. As for these three, I should have bought only one of them (if any), and will return at least "Ceremonies."
As for their content, you have to be aware that these pictures, taken in well-developed South Africa, depict tribal lifestyles and rituals that hark back to the past--remaining only in a modern context of revival and preservation of the old traditional ways. People dress up for them, in other words. You'll see costumes that look neat and clean and store-bought, and some evidence of modernity in the background (buildings, shirts and ties). You'd buy one of these books to see how the modern culture chooses to embrace some form of ritual (cultural heritage) from the past in the hope of informing today's culture in positive ways.
If you want to see and learn about African tribal cultures that still exists today as they have for hundreds of years (the "dressing up" is still every-day attire), then you must look elsewhere (such as, for example, the amazing books on Ethiopia's Omo Valley, by Silvester, Giansanti, Beckwith & Fisher, etc.).
Three stars might be too many for these works that are a repeated rehashing of previous works, almost identical, apparrently just to make another buck off unsuspecting customers. Shame.
WAITING FOR A BOOK.......2000-03-31
When this book was first published, here in South Africa its promotion was good. I decided this was my type of book, so I went shopping. None of the bookshops that I usually use had it and so I placed an order at a couple of the stores (explaining I also had another order somewhere else.
It really was worth waiting for, the photography is outstanding. There is also enough information for people who do not live in Africa - just to wet their taste buds
South Africa has had plenty of problems in the past but when I see a book like this, I am very honoured as I know these tribes, they are colourful and very proud.
A fascinating insight into South African cultures.......1999-04-18
This richly illustrated book is a fascinating look at the various traditional black cultures in South Africa. The photographer spent time with different tribal peoples, experiencing their day-to-day lives. His magnificent photographs allow us a glimpse into these vanishing worlds as they adapt to modern, urban influences. For travellers interested in meeting people and armchair anthropologists, this is an indispensable read.

A Dream Realized.......2003-04-08
This is the most magnificent book of photography that I have seen in many a year. Of course, at this writing, "Vanishing Africa" is more than two decades old, but I had never even heard of it until I chanced to watch a documentary entitled "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl" on Sundance. The film contains many a revelation about its fascinating subject, but none so remarkable as Riefenstahl's reincarnation, in the 1950s, as a nature photographer. Banned, for all practical purposes, from making films, she turned her visual sense to advantage by traveling to the Sudan, where she spent twenty years photographing the Nubians and other endangered African peoples. The images that result are every bit as striking and provocative as anything in "Triumph of the Will" or "Olympia." Of equal interest is the introduction that Riefenstahl has provided for the book; her adventures in Africa were not confined to those behind the camera! Fortunately, I am lucky enough to have a friend who possesses this rare and expensive book; I now want very badly to see the underwater film that Riefenstahl, who took up scuba diving in her 70s, completed last year, the same year she marked her centenary.

Book Description
A dead branch of the Rift Valley, worn hills and plains beaten by the relentless sun, this is the region that spreads around the valley of the Omo River. The wild and remote southern region of Ethiopia only appeared on maps little over a century ago when the first European explorers discovered there a mosaic of ethnic groups. These are peoples that have remained isolated for centuries and that have retained their cultures and customs intact to the present day-peoples like the Surma, Mursi, Karo and many more. By examining a region in the heart of the Black Continent, the book attempts to trace the roots of remotest Africa: the cradle of man, where ancestral bonds with nature still exist. By means of his camera and his pen, in this book the authors have encapsulated long years of study of the peoples and ethnic groups of this continent, in search of vanishing Africa.

Very good.......2007-08-30
The pictures in this book are absolutely great. They are mainly portraits, however I find it amazing how the faces really tell stories. As you may have noticed the book is big, and you will have much material to look at. There are also many text explanations which complete the whole. I must say that viewing this book really felt like a journey to Africa.
Tremendous piece of History!.......2007-04-19
I can basically just agree with the other reviewers. This is a travellog published to the highest of standards. The photographs are HUGE and vibrant and speak volumes about a lost culture that should be documented.
TRIBAL AFRICA UP CLOSE.......2007-03-11
THE PHOTOGRAPHY HERE IS BEAUTIFUL...THE FACES OF EACH PERSON ARE PHOTOGRAPHED UP CLOSE AND THE EMOTION OF THE PEOPLE COMES ALIVE IN THE EYES, THE TRIBAL COLORS ON THE FACES, AND THE WRITTEN EXPLINATION OF EACH PHOTO. THE BOOK WITH THE PEOPLE IN IT ARE LOOKING BACK AT YOU AS IF YOU ARE BEING OBSERVED AND NOT THEM....................EXCELLENT IN ALL WAYS.
Achaic is amazing.......2007-01-09
This is a beatifully written book for any anthropologist.
Gianni travelled to some of the most remote detestinations in Africa where people are so removed from modenisation they are the closest we can see to truely archaic people. The cultural images expressed in this book is an eye opening exsperience. And the photography IS ABOSULTLY AMAZING.
Mine came with a DVD which was physical footage of the tribes men.
Truely a FORGOTTEN africa........Vanishing Africa. Thanks you Gianni
Vanishing.......2006-08-22
The photographs are everything, showing African villagers much as they have lived for the past century. This is not modern Africa, but its last remaining tribal cultures completely tied to the rhythms and livelihood of stoop farming, animal husbandry, and tribal warfare. The people are often beautiful, their adornments alternately colorful and extreme (those lip disks make me wince).
At the time of this review, the Omo valley, in which these tribes are located, is threatened by flooding; this acts as a commentary on the reality of these peoples' lives. It is not idyllic or problem-free; also noted is the presence of Kalashnikov automatic rifles in at least one tribe. That this should be the only visible presence of modernity in this primitive locale, is a sobering comment upon what "progress" has brought to "backward" people.
Many of the photographs are close-ups of individual faces and of small groups. The book is entirely desirable for this alone. Soon, these scenes will only exist in a book, as the final transition to contemporary life inevitably presses itself upon these tribes.

Imazighen: Vanishing Traditions of Berber Women.......2006-01-03
This book presents an excellent survey of Berber crafts. That all of the drafts represented are done by women, is of special interest. The photos are beautiful, both of the women, and of their crafts. The text provides great insight into the history and meaning of the designs used. This book is a must for anyone interested in tribal arts and crafts.
