Book Description
Relax. Linger over the national parks you'll visit in this book.
Seven maps and 129 photographs will take you there. In the northern Cascade Range in Washington State, you'll hike amid snowy crags and alpine meadows. In Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park, you'll cruise among lakes once plied by fur trappers. In the badlands of North Dakota, you'll dodge bison, and off California's coast, you'll discover an isolated wildlife haven in the Channel Islands. In the Guadalupe Mountains of Texas, you'll explore an exposed portion of a 400-mile-long marine fossil reef. In Florida, you'll snorkel among the coral islands and reefs of Biscayne National Park, and in Alaska, you'll hike in the wilderness park of Katmai.

Lesser-known National Parks, a fine introduction:.......2002-07-23
Biscayne, Katmai, North Cascades, Guadelupe Mountains, Voyageurs, Theodore Roosevelt, Channel Islands: Not seven of the best-known National Parks to be sure. But each is eminently deserving of inclusion into the system of "Nation's Crown Jewels". This book shows why.
In a well-drafted, readable, interesting text, accompanied by excellent National Geographic photography, the ins and outs of each named park, including highlights, topography, natural features, climate, hazards, and accessibility are brought out in an imaginative, pleasant manner.
Each park is shown to be a microcosm of a facet of the American wilderness, and each chapter makes you want to visit that park. I have been to Theodore Roosevelt and Biscayne. both were fascinating, and this book helped whet my appetite. I was never misled.
This is a real keeper for any traveler's national park library.
Five stars.
A Great Little Guide!.......2000-06-23
This little park guide has been the best one I've found for the "not-so-well-known" parks. Some friends and I have used it quite a bit on several little trips we've taken. If you're looking for a guide to smaller, less publicized parks then this is a great one. Some of the directions could have been a bit better, but all-in-all they were pretty good (we may have just been dumb).
Book Description
120 stunning photographs reveal the treasures of Canada's national park system.
"Gateways to nature, to discovery to solitude, to celebrate the beauty and infinite variety of our land" is how Parks Canada defines the country's more than 35 national parks. In this book, authors and photographers travel to selected parks across Canada. Along the way they visit remarkable ecological niches and meet people long linked to these intriguing places. From the fog-bound Pacific shore at Gwaii Haanas to Newfoundland's Gros Morne along the Atlantic, from Jasper. Banff, and Yoho in the Rocky Mountains, to remote parks in the vast interior plains, and finally to the wild seemingly endless expanse of the far north in Ivvavik -- experience a rich sampling of Canada's national parks and reserves.

travel notes by National Geographic journalists.......2003-04-27
This book consists of essays, or rather travel notes, put together by a National Georgaphic team. They write about their impressions from travelling through Canada's national parks by boat, horse, or by foot. They write about everything they see, stories they are told by the natives, the weather, their findings in the forest, their guides, etc. The photographs in the book are as stunning as you would expect from National Geographic photographers. However, if you are planning to go to one of these parks, you would hardly find any useful information in this book. There are no maps, no info on activities, lodging, not even clear information how to get to the location where the beautiful pictures in the book were taken. This book is a good choice to read if you want are curious about Canada's national parks, but have no intention of going there.
Guide to the National Parks- NOT.......2000-08-28
Nat'l Geo. puts out a great book, 'Guide to the National Parks,' of the U.S. with much helpful information for travelers. This book has no such information. It claims to have detailed maps of which there is only one. It has no park specific info like the U.S. guide. It's best use is to weight down a coffee table, except that it's softcover. If pictures are your bag then this is probably a good book for you. If getting into the out of doors is your goal then this book is of no help at all.
In a word - Spellbinding.......1999-05-14
This book has the perfect balance of photography and story telling. Being an aspiring landscape photographer, this book was truly inspirational.
Not to mention that if you love the mountains (but live in the city), this book will make you want to relocate. Unbelievably good photography.

Customer Reviews:
an attractive, helpful guidebook.......2003-01-16
This concise guide covers the bottom quarter of the Baja California peninsula from La Paz to Cabo San Lucas. It's chock full of useful data and advice cultivated over four editions. The sports and recreation sections are admirable, and there's good information on the local food and drink. The hotel listings are useful too, although exact room prices are not quoted for some reason. Instead there are price ranges with "under US$25" the lower end category. Restaurant meal prices are also missing - "moderately priced" can mean anything - but opening hours and menu descriptions are provided. None of this will be a real problem for the vast majority of visitors, but low-budget backpackers will be left guessing at times. I found the coverage of city bus services skimpy, although inter-city buses are adequately described. I sought and didn't find tips on getting too/from the airports on the cheap (US$14 per person for a colectivo to cover the 12 km to/from La Paz Airport doesn't sound like the cheapest option to me). Maybe Cabo just isn't a shoestring destination the way Thailand is - and I know Joe Cummings is very familiar with Thailand. Joe has plenty of helpful hints for motorists, but I couldn't find anything about parking. Is free, secure parking so universally available around Cabo that's it's not even worth a mention? Travelers who have used the Moon Handbooks series in past will be impressed by the resigned format exemplified in this volume. Cummings himself took most of the black and white photos, and I like the way sites are clearly labeled on the maps and not listed in cumbersome keys the way they are in Lonely Planet. However, 18 maps in a 288-page guidebook seems too few to me. These minor caveats aside, Moon Handbooks Cabo is value for money and it will serve the independent, adventuresome traveler well.
Moon Cabo Book - 3 rd Edition.......2003-01-03
My family just returned from 2 weeks in Cabo. During this time we used the Moon guide (3rd ed.) extensively. We visited San Jose, Cabo SL, Todos Santos, and east cape as well as various remote points in between and found the book accurate every step of the way. This book is very well researched and complete - although pricing was a couple of years out of date. I assume the 4 th edition corrects that. This book is a "must have" for travelers to Cabo who want to do more than just stay in a pre-packaged all inclusive resort.
Great travel book.......2002-02-26
I thought this book was highly accurate in its description of restaurants and hotels in the main places people visit in Baja California del Sur. It even has info on places you mainly just drive through from one larger place to another with information on the tiny town's history, places to eat there, etc. You can rely on the information in this book. I'd not hesitate to buy another travel book by this author.
Good Region Overview.......2002-01-01
We found this book to be a pretty good overview of the Los Cabos region. You can pretty much get to anywhere you want to go using this book. Most of the hotels and restaurants are detailed, but not enough detail is given. If you are looking for recommendations, they are hard to find in this book. For the most part it just describes what the establishment offers. The author does cover all of the areas. We found details on the East Cape region lacking in other books. Although not extensively covered in this book, it did have the best information we could find. To be honest, this area is fairly simple, and this guide does a good job at telling you what you can expect where. I would recommend this book for travelers to the region, but it could use more reviews of the many dining and lodging options, could use some updating, and would benefit from a more comprehensive mapping of the various regions. Please check out the detailed trip report at diveatlas.com for more details.
Lots of inacuracies.......2001-09-02
Although this book contains lots of good information, it has too many inaccuracies. It looks as though the author has not updated his database of accommodations. I found too many wrong phone numbers, wrong mailing addresses and wromg email addresses. I know these things change, but if they have all really changed this much, there should be a disclaimer or they should not be included at all.
There are one and a half pages of what the author calls "Useful Web sites", but they are not very useful and he does not include any web sites for the many listed accommodations and resorts that have their own web sites.
Book Description

Moon Handbooks Cabo provides the essentials on a range of dining, transportation, and accommodation options, as well as useful cultural insights and sidebar topics on subjects such as island-hopping, cooking, religion, and bar lingo. Complete with maps, photographs, illustrations, and extensive information on outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, boating, sea kayaking, windsurfing, surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving, Moon Handbooks Cabo is the traveler's guide to a memorable and uniquely personal trip.

Many Outdated Recommendations.......2007-07-13
I just returned from a week in Cabo and found this book to be hopelessly outdated. On at least four occassions, I took my family in search of restaurants and other attractions featured in the book, only to find they had closed (in some instances, quite some time (even years) ago). And to be clear, I probably only sought out ten places in the book to start with (so we're talking about a 40% hit rate). To me, that is totally unacceptable. By the last two or three days of the trip, we just left the guide in the hotel room. I also found the maps to be difficult to use. I did appreciate some of the narrative in the book.
MOON HANDBOOKS CABO.......2007-06-27
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TRAVEL TO CABO THEN THIS BOOK IS VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE. THE BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS WHICH ARE CABO SAN LUCAS THE PLAYGROUND OF THE CABO AREA, THE CORRIDOR WHICH IS THE BEACH AREA, SAN JOSE DEL CABO WHICH IS VERY LAY BACK,QUIET, RESERVED AREA AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS LIKE LA PAZ, EAST CAPE AND WEST CAPE AREA. IT HAS EVERYTHING TO FIT YOUR INDIVIDUAL TASTE. IN SAN LUCAS, SAN JOSE, AND LA PAZ IT HAS MAPS OF THE DOWNTOWN AREA,HOTELS AND DESCRIPTION AND PRICE RANGE, SAME THING WITH RESTAURANTS AND ACTIVITIES SUCH AS FISHING,SNORKELING,ATV'S. ALSO THE BOOK GIVES YOU HINTS ON TRAVEL,MONEY,WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHAT NOT TO LOOK FOR. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE IS IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU A PARTICULAR PRICE AT THE HOTELS AND RESTAURANT JUST THE PRICE RANGE
A Cape Region Guide.......2007-03-01
I made a trip to Cabo last year and found this book quite useful for planning and executing a trip. Do your homework before you go, read it and plan a tentative schedule of events and things to see and do and you will save valuable time when time is of the essence. A more appropriate title might be The Cape Region but it wouldn't have the name recognizability that Cabo does. Tourists tend to visit Cabo San Lucas or as it is known, Cabo, when they fly in. The book covers the whole Cape Region, including the Central Cape where you wil find small towns and if you are so inclined ,hiking trails in the Sierra de la Laguna. For the adventurous soul there is information about camp sites and details about the Canyons found in the Central Cape. The East Cape is only touched upon briefly unfortuantely. There is also a section on La Paz and the vicinity surrounding it.Other sections of the book include both Cabos, San Jose del Cabo and the more popular Cabo San Lucas. We stayed in a condo in San Jose del Cabo as our headquarters and found it quite pleasant and enjoyable. It was quite laid back. By comparison Cabo San Lucas was anything but. If tourist infested regions of Mexico are what you seek in a trip to Mexico than San Lucas is for you. A few visits was enough for me as I preferred the tranquility and slower pace of San Jose. In any event, the book lays out information for both, including The Corridor, which is the 18-mile stretch between San Jose and San Lucas. The book has maps detailing the various accessible beaches along The Corridor, including several surfing breaks on the reef. There are also several diving spots along The Corridor. Restaurants are also suggested but naturally food tastes are subjective and require some common sense and prior knowledge of the food of Baja's coast. The book also covers the West Cape which is not very developed but has the old charm of Mexico. There is lots to discover in the old towns. A major section is dedicated to Todos Santos which is a lushly-vegetated arroyo seco(dried river bed). I found this place to be very interesting , quaint yet quite charming with a bohemian-artist-flair to the town. It is an artist colony of sorts. Here you will find The Hotel California. Each section of the Cape Area features a history of the towns, places to eat, places to stay, including houses for rent, bed-and breakfasts, hostels, guesthouses, apartments, condos and the onmipresent saturation and expansion of hotels. There are also suggestions on things to do that are geared to the tourist, with addresses and maps. There are tips on money changing with locations of various ATM's, post offices, telephones etc. The tourist and party haven, Cabo San Lucas(this is what tourists think of as Cabo)has 30 pages out of 270 pages in the book dedicated to the hussle and bustle of Cabo. The same type of information is available for Cabo San Lucas or Cabo as the other regions, including sports and recreation, useful telephone information etc. but the scope of the book does not focus on Cabo. This is a good book for the adventurous traveler who wants to explore the area by car. We rented a car and traveled every day to a different location and actually spent little time in Cabo, usually only at night. To this end the book was extremely useful for the week we were there. As with any travel book, businesses change, go out of business, are replaced by new owners etc, so be flexible and use common sense. You will enjoy your vacation more that way. I plan to use this book again for another trip to the region but this time for a longer period of time and by my own SUV. This is a recommended book for the Cape Region, from La Paz and everything in between, to Cabo San Lucas, as opposed to just Cabo San Lucas or as it is known, Cabo.
Keep shopping.......2007-01-17
Utterly useless. The layout is awful. The recommendations are off the mark. The guy spends so much time showing off that he is one with Cabos that he fails to provide anyting useful that a gringo tourist may need. It was impossible to plan anything using this book, as the information was incomplete, out of date, uninteresting, or just plain wrong (PS Don't eat at Mi Casa...the restaurant is worse than Pepe's, and yet, Mr. Cummings recommends it highly).

Customer Reviews:
Easy to Use.......2003-08-30
I gave this guide 5 stars because it is the most complete and easiest guide of Baja out there. I found this book to be very complete. Even two building towns where you can just buy gas and eat are mentioned in this guide. It contains most of the "necessary" maps within its pages, but I would recommend buying a map devoted to the area in which you plan to go. I found this book to be up to date, but I have spent the most time in the northwest part of Baja. I also own the Lonely Planet guide to Baja and I much prefer the Moon's guide (mainly because in my experience it is more complete).
The format of the guide is also very easy to use. The information is laid out in a very logical format. You can just look through the book to find something to do in the area you are going, rather than needing to know what you want to do and then finding out where you can do it.
comprehensive but not selective.......2002-10-10
If you're spending 2 months driving down and up, this would be a great book. But Cummings doesn't provide much advice for the person who only has a week or so to spend in Baja and must pick and choose. Even after reading the whole book you don't get a sense for what are the nicest destinations. This is important because a lot of Baja destinations are popular for people with a passion for a particular activity and if you don't enjoy that activity you'll probably feel trapped there.
Tip: If you must go to Cabo, avoid Cabo San Lucas and the Corridor and stay in San Jose del Cabo (a real Mexican town closer to the airport). Also rent the heaviest SUV that you can and drive the coast road (dirt) out to Los Frailes for snorkeling and camping on the beach (dogs are welcome).
A great book for the Baja traveler, especially if driving........2002-02-08
First I want to compare the 4th edition of this book with the third. Most of the changes in the 4th edition are the color maps and updated info on the Cabo area. While the maps are nice, there are better sources for Baja maps.
Now back to the review of the book itself. I love this book, I have the 2nd and 3rd editions also, and they have been used extensively for Baja travel. While the road conditions and prices obviously will change they are good guidelines of what to expect. I think this book is most suited to travelers that are driving and offers great info on side trips off the beaten path. The road conditions regarding if 4wd is required is helpful, even if things could have changed since publication. Also great info for boaters especially concerning boat ramps, and fuel availability.
I found the hotel ratings to be pretty accurate about the conditions and facilities. In my opinion the best book published on general Baja travel.
Lots of inaccuracies.......2001-09-02
Although this book contains lots of good information, it has too many inaccuracies. It looks as though the author has not updated his database of accommodations. I found too many wrong phone numbers, wrong mailing addresses and wromg email addresses. I know these things change, but if they have all really changed this much, there should be a disclaimer or they should not be included at all.
There are two pages of what the author calls "Useful Web sites", but they are not very useful and he does not include any web sites for the many listed accommodations and resorts that have their own web sites.
