1 out of 5 stars I would like to see it to be able to review it........2007-07-13

I have never received these books. They were due on June 1-5, 07. It is now July 13th. I placed the order the first week in May. This is slo even for Mexico mail. However, I know the Peterson series and they are usually excellent.

5 out of 5 stars I love this.......2006-11-25

I love this book because I have the National Audubon Society First Field Guide for reptiles and I would often run in to reptile that the I couldn't Identify. I knew that I needed a bigger better book. So I bought the western and eastern Peterson Field guide for reptiles and amphibians and it had a lot more reptiles and it had amphibians which I never had a book that had information about them before, it has a lot more reptiles and it's shows you were they are each located. It give you a detailed description of each animal and a detailed drawing of each animal. Because of this I have been able to identify reptiles and amphibian that I couldn't before. I don't like that they use drawing of the animals instead of pictures and the drawings just show the heads of the snakes.

5 out of 5 stars must have.......2006-03-19

great detail & pictures are in color this edition! Maps are in color also! This is helpful when out in the field looking for your "herps". Thanks to Robert Stebbins & all involved in compling all the data needed for the updated guide

5 out of 5 stars A very complete and well illustrated guide.......2005-08-03

This field guide is very well organized and illustrated. It is quite complete. With over 300 pages of information this is a must for westerners.

5 out of 5 stars Great update to a great field guide.......2003-03-27

Stebbins does it again. As a biologist who works throughout southern California I find this book indispensable. It is a vast improvement to the last edition (which was very good to begin with) with lots of color photos, many more color plates and the range maps are great too, again with color. It has revised the taxonomy of many species and included a many of the lastest subspecies designations. This book is easy to use from the novice to the advanced and should be in any nature enthusiasts library.

Book Description

A comprehensive guide to snakes in the western region of North America.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A first-rate reference and field guide.......2003-03-04

The collaborative effort of veteran herpetologist and herpetoculturist R. D. Bartlett and writer, wildlife lecturer, wilderness guide, and herpetologist Alan Tennant, Snakes Of North America: Western Region is a comprehensive guide to the wide variety of snake species found in the western region of North America. Enhanced with 186 full-color photographs, maps of habitat and range, abundance, size, venom status, prey, and behavior of species, and much, much more, Snakes Of North America: Western Region is confidently recommended as being a first-rate reference and field guide filled from cover to cover with the collective wisdom of two experienced herpetological professionals.

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as its eastern/central counterpart.......2001-08-29

Together with its companion volume, Snakes of North America: Eastern and Central Regions, this book provides a complete reference to snakes north of the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the weaker of the two volumes, however. It is slimmer, less detailed and lacks the eastern/central volume's bibliography and glossary. It covers snakes on a species-by-species basis (rather than by subspecies, which is the case in the eastern/central volume), which leaves most subspecies with a paragraph of description at most. (Are western subspecies less well-defined than eastern subspecies?) The difference probably results from the fact that the eastern/central book drew upon Tennant's earlier books on Florida and Texas snakes; this book did not have the same advantage. As well, errors in the book suggest that more careful editing was needed. At least one set of range maps was reversed, and there have been reports that some of the garter snake photos were mixed up. Accuracy in a field guide is essential; errors here can compound themselves down the road. Still worth having.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great field guide.......2004-05-31

This is a true field guide; it is small and sturdy enough to actually carry in the field. It's information is geared towards field work (where to find, when to find, certain critters, etc.). The species are well described, and ranges and descriptions for subspecies are present under the species accounts (far better than Audobon's field guide). Furthermore, the range descriptions are truly precise; it will detail the overall countours of the animals range and then the areas where the animal is not found. This makes it much easier to determine if a given animal is found in an area.

Also, the plates are far superior to most photo's. The allow for a more clear view of thier subject, and highlight important identification characteristics. They are also done to scale (although scale used varies somewhat from page to page--it is listed on each page), which makes it easier to get an idea of size of the animal.

This edition is somewhat old; '98 or so. I understand the book's been updated somewhat since then due changes in our knowledge and the taxonomy of the animals, but even this edition is still very functional in the field, or for a general reference.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best!.......2001-03-27

If you were to only buy one book on reptiles and amphibians, this would be the one. No other author can come close to Rober C. Stebbins in this area. Not only is his writing, informative, easily understood, highly intersting and always engaging, but he also does his own drawings, from live specimens, and his artwork is quite incredible! I suggest that any parent of school age children consider buying this book as a present for his or her own kids. Young boys in particular are quickly attracted to this kind of work and a book like this will serve as a real foundation for years of study and enjoyment. Teachers too will often find that boys who dislike school and "reading" in general, will just love this book. Anything spent on this book is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Crown Jewels Of The Peterson Field Guide Series.......1999-07-31

Written by the leading expert in his field, this is the best book on the subject. I remember when I was in college that Professor Stebbins' class was always impossible to get into because he was so popular and respected. This book is his legacy... a highly detailed book with hundreds of beautifully rendered drawings. Each drawing is meticulous and a great learning tool. This volume is one of the best of the Peterson Field Guide Series and is highly recommended for all readers, even if they never venture outside.

Lonely Planet is at its guidebook best when it's covering isolated regions where those little details of shelter, food, and transportation are of more than passing concern. Just the section on Denali National Park alone makes Jim DuFresne's guide worthwhile, illuminating the complex new rules governing access to that sensational wildlife reserve, plus giving information on dogsled demonstrations, hiking, rafting, backpacking, and so on. The sections on climate, geography, and ecology are very well done, as are the chapters on the Alaskan people and society. The transportation chapters are vital and comprehensive, and the rest of the guide follows suit, covering all of Alaska (no little task) with reliable acumen, information, and savvy. --Stephanie Gold

I just came back from the vacation in Alaska last night. I came from China one year ago and had this vacation all by myself. Thanks for this book, my trip was fantastic! I used this book for trip planning, like booking hotels. And I had it on my way always. Information in this book is very updated and really helpful. On the last several blank pages, I got some stamps of national parks, as well as contact information of many friends made in this trip. I'll keep this book, which will make me recall all the great details of my trip. And I will recommend this book all my friends who are interested in traveling in Alaska.

We just returned from a month of exploring Alaska and found this book very useful in planning. It has a less commercial view, so we appreciated the suggested accommodations and reviews of things to see. They were always right on target with the less commercial things highlighted. Very useful.

3 mos. in Alaska and I used this book extensively! I plotted numerous trips from multi-day trips to long "all day" hikes with the aid of this book. I did about a 3rd of the trails in this book (maybe more) and the trail descriptions are accurate. Additional information regarding lodging was extremely useful....... If you are planning a backpacking trip in Alaska, buy this book! It would have been difficult finding backpacking information without it.

Jim Dufresne does a great job in outlining excellent hikes to take throughout Alaska. We used this book in a number of areas. He gives the backpacker's view of things, not the typical tourist's. Mr. Dufresne also wrote a great book on Glacier Bay. The only guidebook we used to kayak the area. We would have never done that area had we not come acrossed his book in Michigan where he is from.

4 out of 5 stars Covers the state, but there are better books if you day-hike.......2005-01-26

If you're going to Southcentral Alaska (i.e., anywhere within 100 or so miles of Anchorage, including the Kenai Peninsula) a much more comprehensive and useful book is 55 Ways to the Wilderness in Southcentral Alaska by Helen Niehauser (sp?). Unlike 55 Ways, Dufresne's book does cover the whole state, but it lists only a small number of hikes, and they are all multi-day trips, some of them requiring good route-finding skills. It also appears that Dean Littlepage's (sp?) book on hiking in Alaska has statewide coverage and lists many more hikes than this book, though I have only thumbed thru the TOC of that one. On the other hand, Dufresne knows his stuff, writes engagingly, and describes some renowned multi-day hikes in depth. I took a longish trip to Alaska hiking the trails he recommended and had a wonderful time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Hiking in Alaska.......2001-03-13

This book contains sections for each geographical area of Alaska. It gives background on the area, tells you what types of permits you will need to hike, what transportation is available, etc. It also suggests several trails in each area. The book also contains a 100 page section on Alaska in general - history, facts, wildlife, transportation, etc. A great book if you want to plan a trip to Alaska but need to figure out which part of the state to go to. Not as useful if you want a lot of detail about a specific region.
