5 out of 5 stars Learn to love trees! Or learn about the trees you love........2007-10-17

This is an wonderful guide to trees and one of the few that also includes shrubs. The format of keys and plates is very clear and an excellent introduction to the use of taxonomic keys.

5 out of 5 stars the one.......2002-08-01

No mere Peterson field guide, this scholarly work is a concise encyclopedia of all the trees native to the northeastern United States, with descriptions that can truly be used to tell them apart (a unique feat). Belongs in the backpack of any hiker who wants to learn trees. Fits in a half-gallon Ziploc. Remember you need a magnifying glass and a sharp knife to use the book properly.

5 out of 5 stars Best for field work.......2002-03-17

As a wetland delineator in PA, this book proves invaluable for field identification of trees, shrubs, and vines. Especially useful is are the keys for identification of these plants in winter when leaves and fruiting bodies are non-existant. I have several other tree books for reference, but they rarely are worth carting along in the field now that I have this book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of the Name.......2001-08-03

Follows the fine tradition of Peterson Field Guides. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive work for identification.......1999-09-22

Petrides' work is the most accurate I have found in tree identification. Color pictures are no substitute for a close-up examination of the stems, leaves and fruit of trees and shrubs. It is considered the definitive source for the John Burroughs Naturalist Award bestowed by the Buckeye Council of the Boy Scouts of America only upon those capable of sight identification of approximately 600 trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

      Book Description

Winter, when plants are dormant and their leaves may have fallen, is a challenging time to identify woody flora. Designed especially for winter use and featuring almost six hundred illustrations, this taxonomic guide describes some nine hundred plant species by their twig, bud, and bark characteristics. All the trees, shrubs, and woody ground covers that grow without aid of cultivation in the Southeast are presented here, in a single reference.

      Includes the following:

      * native plants, as well as naturalized exotic species known to occur in at least two locations in the Southeast

      * geographical coverage from east Texas and northern Florida to southeastern Kansas and southern Delaware

      * spring or summer features of a plant in the absence of any reliable winter diagnostic features

      * a map of the guide's coverage area and nearly six hundred illustrations that show distinguishing characteristics of twigs and buds

      * a brief introduction to botanical terminology and the use of taxonomic keys, descriptions of various habitats and physiographic regions of the Southeast, a glossary, a list of references, and an index that includes common and scientific names

      3 out of 5 stars Half a book, but a good half?.......2001-05-26

There would seem to be some justice to the earlier review. This book obviously is handicapped by the absence of illustrations: some line drawings accompanying each species would greatly enhance the usefulness of this book. The color photographs are few (at most one per species), fairly small and many suffer from a dark background: also they are in a separate part and not near the descriptions. This book is not in the same league as John Laird Farrar's work for northern North America.

Still the pictures are of a pretty good quality. For most species a distribution map is provided. The volume is well-printed. In many respects it complements Harrar&Harrar's "Guide_to_Southern_Trees". Maybe these two together make up a complete book?

PS I don't dare judge the quality of the descriptions, although I do note that the authors refer to "Betula alba" as if it is an extant name, which is a pretty backward thing to do.

3 out of 5 stars This book is difficult to use for anyone but a botanist........1999-06-09

I found the book's keys difficult to use for identification of trees because the terminology was totally scientific. There were no drawings for clarity, and the photos were not adequate for identification. The book was a disappointment.

        Product Description

Tidal freshwater forested wetlands are unique wetland systems. Occupying low relief coastal areas which are subject to both upland runoff and tidal flooding, these systems are especially vulnerable to pressure from human development and to climate change impacts of sea-level rise and increased drought/flood frequency. Yet to date the ecological dynamics, distribution, and conservation status of these communities is poorly understood.

This book draws together the latest findings from investigators focusing on the hydrological processes, community organization, and stress physiology of freshwater, tidally influenced land-margin forests of the southeastern United States. It describes the land use history that led to the restricted distribution of these wetlands, and provides descriptions of the hydrology, soils, biogeochemistry, and physiological ecology of these systems, highlighting the similarities shared among tidal freshwater forested wetlands.

Including case studies from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, Ecology of Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands of the Southeastern United States will be an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers and students interested in understanding the complex dynamics of this unique coastal ecosystem; one that has been altered by land-use history and which is now undergoing decline due to changing climate, sea-level rise and hurricanes. In particular, it provides current knowledge on those biological, geological, hydrological and physical forcing factors that may influence the possible alternatives and likely success of coastal restoration projects for these vulnerable ecosystems.

        Book Description

Covering 92 million acres from Virginia to Texas, the longleaf pine ecosystem was, in its prime, one of the most extensive and biologically diverse ecosystems in North America. Today these magnificent forests have declined to a fraction of their original extent, threatening such species as the gopher tortoise, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the Venus fly-trap. Conservationists have proclaimed longleaf restoration a major goal, but has it come too late?

In Looking for Longleaf, Lawrence S. Earley explores the history of these forests and the astonishing biodiversity of the longleaf ecosystem, drawing on extensive research and telling the story through first-person travel accounts and interviews with foresters, ecologists, biologists, botanists, and landowners. For centuries, these vast grass-covered forests provided pasture for large cattle herds, in addition to serving as the world's greatest source of naval stores. They sustained the exploitative turpentine and lumber industries until nearly all of the virgin longleaf had vanished.

Looking for Longleaf demonstrates how, in the twentieth century, forest managers and ecologists struggled to understand the special demands of longleaf and to halt its overall decline. The compelling story Earley tells here offers hope that with continued human commitment, the longleaf pine might not just survive, but once again thrive.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb book on several fronts..........2007-10-16

Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!

Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.

It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)

This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.

5 out of 5 stars complete book about longleaf pines.......2006-11-19

mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history, present day status, and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape, compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries, and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems, with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on longleaf yet........2005-09-08

This book is as accurate and detailed as any scholarly paper but is written so well that it is certain to be a classic of literature like Archie Carr's "The Windward Road."

        5 out of 5 stars America's Rain Forest.......2004-11-23

For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.

It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.

The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

        Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Travel Companion to Timor Leste.......2006-12-27

I spent 3 weeks in Timor Leste back in 2005 while I was working for the UN. Now that most UN personnel have moved out, there some restaurants that no longer exist, as well as hotels. I was inspired by this book to take a trip to an Eco-Resort in Atauro... it was amazing!! I highly recommend this book if you are planning to go to the World's Newest Nation.

3 out of 5 stars Worthy first effort, but a little more tact next time.......2005-06-30

While Lonely Planet is to be commended for publishing a guide to East Timor, its coverage of language issues leaves something to be desired.

The guide ignores the fact that before the Indonesian invasion, the national language, Tetum (not 'Tetun') co-existed happily with Portuguese, and derived a considerable amount of its vocabulary from it. This is reflected in the Tetum phrases listed, so it is ironic that the guide is so dismissive about Portuguese as the 'least sensible choice'. (The sloppy misspelling of Portuguese names, often transliterated as Spanish ones, is another case in point.)

It remarks that 'apart from a few pleasantries, you're unlikely to need much Portuguese in East Timor'. Leaving aside whether this is true or not, is there any need for such a snide remark? You are unlikely to need much Welsh in Wales, or Basque in the Basque Country, but it won't do any harm if you learn a bit. In any event, most of the pleasantries in Tetum like, 'bondia' for 'hello', 'obrigadu' for 'thank you', 'kolisensa' for 'excuse me', etc, are derived from Portuguese anyway!

On the inside cover, the Tetum paragraph stating that Lonely Planet doesn't accept money or freebies for favourable coverage is so heavily Portuguese-influenced, you might overlook the fact that they didn't write it in Portuguese as well.

The two main daily newspapers, Timor Post and Suara Timor Lorosae, are in Tetum as well as Indonesian, not 'mainly in Indonesian but with some news in Portuguese and English'.

For the record, while both Tetum and Portuguese are official languages, both Indonesian and English are recognised as 'working languages, to be used for as long as is necessary'.

In contrast to Indonesia, whose governments have marginalised regional languages (not even Javanese has official status in Indonesia) and even banned ethnic minority ones (like Portuguese in East Timor as well as Chinese in Indonesia itself), East Timor's language policy seems quite enlightened and pragmatic.

              5 out of 5 stars kudos.......2005-02-18

Kudos to Lonely Planet for publishing this guide to this recently independent destination, which is now just losing its reputation as a risky and potentially violent (formerly) Indonesian enclave. It reads well, and I believe it will be a glowing advertisement for this new country, which deserves international attention from the tourism community.

5 out of 5 stars A quick, comprehensive guide to the world's newest country.......2004-12-31

There are not many frontiers left for international travelers who want to explore new and exotic settings, experience a new culture, and do it without encountering hordes of others with the same purpose in mind. This guide to East Timor, or Timor-Leste as it is now called, will help you do just that.

Part of the fascination of Timor Leste is the saga of its emergence as an independent country. This guide includes a remarkable summary of a wide range of historical, political, and social information about the country (as well as the standard tourist data) that helps set the context for what you will see there. The rudimentary Tetum language section at the end would be an indispensable supplement to the 'how to get there' and 'what you will see' information. I was amazed to find new information about areas that I had visited several times, and thought I knew about.

For best results - read at least one of the supplementary books on Timor history that is suggested. An even longer listing would be useful (maybe in the next edition!).

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful source of information........2000-12-31

I found this book quite informative and useful in its information about many different aspects of visiting Bali. The book provides wonderful cultural insights, historical background and detailed information.

The only major discrepancy we came across, for instance, was that the book said that Kuta has problems with tourists being hassled by street vendors, but when we went in April, we found that the main street in Kuta (where the Matahari Department Store is) quite the opposite. It turned out that the officials had just recently come down on the street vendors and put a stop to harassing tourists there. Instead, when we went to the center of town in Ubud, we were hassled a great deal by taxi/moped drivers to get us to hire them; this caught us off guard.

In response to concerns that the book isn't current on it's information, I feel that you shouldn't rely on a guidebook for prices, and that as a whole Lonely Planet Bali & Lombok gives the information that you need to know. It tells you in great detail about what there is to see and do, and where things are and how things work. I mean afterall, by the time any book reaches publication, isn't a lot of the information out-of-date? Otherwise, a book would never get published; it would be a newsletter.

I gave this a rating of 4 stars only because when we went to Bali, we didn't travel enough of the country (and we didn't get to Lombok) to give the book 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Definately worth taking to Bali.......2000-10-13

We have just returned from Bali (October 2000) and strongly recommend taking this LP with you. I have been a bit skeptical about the info of some LP's (Mexico-we hardly used it!) but in Bali whoever put this one together knew their stuff. FORGET THE PRICES MENTIONED, they've at least doubled for meals accomodation etc , but then so has the amount of rupee you'll get!! One interesting note. We took a taxi to the Temple of Gudang Kawi, an 11th century temple. LP justifibly raves about it. The only other tourists there we saw were holding a LP. Local tour operaters didn't seem to think tourists would be interested in it and must take them to more boring temples!(and believe you me, they get boring!)

As a resident of Bali year-round, the number one complaint by almost every lonely planet carrying visitor is how inaccurate and outdated the lonely planet guides are. Whether it is Thailand or Indonesia, information that is needed on a daily basis is history by the time the lonely books reach the traveling consumer. Bookstores throughout Asia are piled high with lonely planets discarded by weary travelers eager to lessen their load. Lonely planet books do offer historical perspectives that can also be found on the internet, but the insider's information the first time traveler needs to save money and sanity their first days in Asia is sorely lacking. Updated info on how to avoid being ripped off from lodging to transportation to moneychanging is of primary concern to almost all visitors to Bali that we meet. Books as heavy as bricks with pretty pics are nice but hardly handy when you are in need of fast, accurate information. Try "The Beginners Guide to Bali" on cd-rom- it has weekly updated info and prepares the first time traveler to Bali for the unexpected.

              4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2000-06-13

I was so excited about my recent trip to Bali that I used 4 guidebooks. Lonely planet was one of the most useful - it pointed out the tourist traps as well as the great spots. Many of the recommendations are more suitable for backpackers than mid range travelers, but the maps are excellent and the coverage of the entire island is good. Bali will not be the most beautiful place you've visited (it is still a third world country)but it will be the most interesting, especially if you work at understanding the culture. I found the Moon Travel Guide,Bali Handbook, published out of Emeryville California to be the best Bali book. It had the most descriptive narrative (over 300 pages) of Bali's culture, history and customs. However, it is not widely distributed, but is worth searching out.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for a great place to visit.......2005-04-07

I was fortunate enough to travel to Bali in 2003, it was so worth the jetlag and my LP was extremely helpful. I was lucky to stay with my friend at his home in Kerambitan during part of the trip and recommend visitors to try and go off the beaten path away from tourist centers if possible. I was traveling with a friend and since we are both students we were really interested in seeing sights and performances more than surfing and snorkeling. We managed to make it over a lot of the island including Lake Bratan, Lake Batur, Besakih, etc. etc. This book was helpful for navigating our guides and drivers to the places we were interested in seeing, as well as knowing exactly where we were heading. The cultural information is really good and really important to read before you go since Balinese culture is not only very interesting, but also really complex. Just be wary of being hassled by guides at Besakih, especially if you don't want one. But this book gives the ins and outs really well. I really prefer LP over other travel guides.

              4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Material/Starting Point.......2003-12-07

This is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible. Do you own research and talk to other travellers. Since the LP Bali is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels covered are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better.

Nightlife is making a big comeback with the reopening of Paddy's Reloaded (did they really need the weapons terminology?) and the return of the young aussie crowd. Check Bounty for the college age crowd, Seminyak for the posh/club crowd.

You can also avoid the moneychangers altogether by going to the BCA ATMs. Look for the ones that give you bills in 100,000 Rp denominations. You get a more reasonable maximum with these machines.

The activities sections are good, particularly the surfing one. They do a poor job of covering Lombok however, if you are planning on heading out there for an extended stay, I would recommend the LP Indonesia. Be forewarned though, the constant soliciting outside of the Gili Islands in Lombok is extremely tiresome. For scuba, skip Gili altogether and head to Flores or Sulawesi (or even back to Bali's Menjangen). Many of the sections are blasted out and the whole place is overfished.

Finally, if you want to book a boat trip to the Komodo Islands, you have a couple options, the pricey Perama boats (better and more luxurious boats) or the cheapo independent boats (very basic converted fishing boats). The second option is very very basic - you sleep on dirty mats and the snorkeling equipment doesn't work. The food is pretty good though and you do get to all the major sites with no hassle. If you don't mind all this, you can book these boats pretty much anywhere on Lombok. The dragons are all worth it - we saw a couple fighting over a mate.

5 out of 5 stars Well up to standard.......2003-08-24

I am Balinese and live in Ubud.

As I am involved in tourism, I always keep a close eye on guide books to make sure that they do not give any incorrect information, either generally in respect of Bali, or in particular, in respect of my own restaurant, shops and accommodation in Ubud.

I am pleased to say that the text is remarkably accurate - as are the maps - which is not easy in the fast changing world we now live in.

The sections on Balinese culture are concise and very helpful to those visiting the island for the first time. Balinese culture is complicated and the visitor will benefit greatly from the explanations in this book.

There are also some nice photographs. Recommended.
