5 out of 5 stars Good book, but who wrote the first review? The publisher???.......2001-09-15

Is this previous review supposed to be real?!?!
This was a very good book and was well written, but the people who publish the book should not review it. It's a good guide and a good read, but it makes the people who wrote a very good book look bad. As far as content goes, it's got a knack of making you want to go to the places you read about because they're written in a very loose style that gives you a very real sense place. It's also probably the only guide books where I actually laughed out loud reading it. I recommend it.

            5 out of 5 stars Northern England section - A Review.......2001-07-06

The newest edition in Frommer's "Hanging Out" series of guides, Hanging Out In England, has finally hit the stands, featuring descriptive and entertaining write-ups on England's hot spots (and not-so-hot spots) by various authors. Sections cover Northern England, London and Southern England.

Hanging Out In England covers all the ins and outs of backpacking through England. It tells you where to go, how to find the hip crowd once you're there, and where to crash once you've partied and are ready to drop. It delivers on affordable hostels and B&B's, the best places for inexpensive food and drink (fish and chips, mate?), and tips on where and how to chat-up the locals. It is, in essence, a travel guide for the modern vagabond generation, the young and young-at-heart travelers who set off on sojourning escapades with what few possessions they can carry on their shoulders.

Contributing writers Kristy Apostolides (Northern England), Dominique Herman (London) and Lauren Koch (Southern England) recount the experiences of their journeys with write-ups that are at times irreverent and often entertaining. They have seemingly sought out the nooks and crannies of their respective regions, exposing areas that are rarely seen by tourists. A refreshing departure from the usual stuffiness of "mainstream" travel guides, Hanging Out In England delivers a first-hand and candid report on the great isle nation, exposed in all its brash glory. From Liverpool to Leeds and London to Manchester, from the White Cliffs of Dover to the Scottish boarder, along Hadrian's Wall and centuries old walkways, these authors have done the footwork and come back to deliver a guide for any traveler who wants to venture out on his or her own and experience England the way the locals live it.

This book is great. I went to Italy a lame American devil and came back a lame American devil, but what a great book anyway.

All the locations for hip convents are detailed, and mapped out. The Italian culture is described in intimate detail, by some of the finest wordsmiths since Dante. The restaurant reviews are so well written you almost see the stains from the extra virgin olive oil. There is section that descibes Italian fashion. The tip on the large lapels was most helpful for my nights on the town. Common Italian slang that peppers the pages makes this an educational as well enjoyable read. "molla benny"

I love this book, no matter where I travel, even in the USA I read it for area recommendations.

            Good book.

I had read the Hanging Out in Europe book and this was very similar only it concentrated on France. The places they mentioned to check out, whether clubs, restaurants, hotels, or museums were great. I had a great time and this book definately helped me find cool places to hang out. I saw a lot more than I probably would have, had I not read the book. Very informative, great for ages 18-30!!! I recently purchased the Hanging Out in Ireland book, as I find these books really helpful for the young adult crowd. One of the other reviewers did not leave a very positive review, I completely disagree with her.

2 out of 5 stars Decide for yourself.......2003-04-10

I bought this book to help me as I spent the year studying abroad. The nice part was that there is a small overview of the history and atmosphere of the region, so you could pick and choose your travels carefully. However, with the exception of a substantial vocabular section, there was no information about French culture, customs or travel. Also, there should have been information on the various travel deals in France. The prices will change, but at least the readers would know enough to ask for them. There were only 3 people listed as the authors, and I get the feeling that they did not visit every place mentioned. If they did, they did not spend enough time in each spot to give an accurate portrayal. I assume they asked people who had been there their opinions and used them without fact checking. Many of the places described would be uninteresting to the average traveller. A lot of the cities are typical college towns. Good for being with people your own age, but bad for culture and history. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all. Several of the most spectacular French sites are left out completely (like Carcassonne). Also, they left out places and foods that are very famous regionally (no mention of tarte flambées anywhere in the Alsace chapter, for instance). Like in the 'Hanging Out in Europe' guide, this one is prone to false information and spelling mistakes. Flip through it and decide for yourself if the information is really necessary or if you could do a lot better on your own.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an honest travel guide!.......2004-05-12

This guide acted as my bible for planning my trip to Spain. I love that the writers realize that young travels don't always want to hit the 'tourist' spots like museums and churches...I mean, in Europe, there's only so many you can handle! But most of all, I appreciate how they were completely honest about what they thought of certain places. For instance, their description of San Antonio on Ibiza as " a nightmarish combination of suburban shopping mall, soccer riot, and frat party..." helped me decide where I would NOT go. And the interesting little sections on fashion, locals, and drugs were very interesting and helpful. My only hope is that they will update this edition with all the prices in Euros, rather than pesetas.

4 out of 5 stars Good Party Info & NOT boring.......2004-02-14

I found this book while travelling in Spain last year, so it actually belonged to another traveller. I found it very entertaining to read (unlike a lot of travel books out there) due to the humor they incorporate into the facts and reccomendations. All of the hostels that are recommended were really nice and true to the word of the writers. It gives a list for a 12 hour tour of must sees in every city, which I found very helpful when only spending a day or two in one city. I really enjoyed this book... when my dog chewed it up right before my 3rd trip to Spain, I had to go out and buy another one!

            1 out of 5 stars Incorrect Informaiton.......2002-07-30

I bought this book before I spent a summer in Spain. When I got to Spain, I had to buy a different travel guide because so many things in this book were not correct. Many of the hours they listed for museums and other attractions were wrong, the prices they listed for restaurants, bars and clubs were wrong, and many of the places they suggested to go were absolutely terrible. I bought the book because I though it was geared for college students, but their attempts for this were way off and it feels like it was written by older people who do not know have fun traveling around Spain.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Entertaining Travel Book on Spain Ever Written.......2001-06-29

When I picked up Hanging Out in Spain, I hoped for an informative guide that would help me find my way around Spain. I went to Spain last year with several guides because I couldn't get the information I need from one guide. When I read Hanging Out in Spain, I realized this would be the only book I will be taking with me on my trip to Spain this year. Not only is it loaded with very useful information, it's written in a casual, comical style. The book addressed all the questions a hip 20- something traveler would need to know, from the coolest night spots, to a concise overview of the history and culture in every region of Spain. They tell you what the local crowds are like, what their interested in talking about, and where to get some edible food. I highly recommend any traveler with plans to go to Spain to pick up Hanging Out in Spain.

2 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2003-06-19

A fair amount of the information is now out of date. For example, costs are shown in Irish Pounds but the currency of the Republic of Ireland since January 2002 is the Euro. A fair number of the listed restaurants have closed. I'd wait for the next edition or be sure to carry another book or two.

            5 out of 5 stars I had a Blast!.......2002-06-11

I used this book just a few months ago and was thoroughly pleased. It appeals particularly to a younger age group, when it mentions the glam clubs and pubs. I will use the Hanging Out Series for later travel abroad.

            1 out of 5 stars A thin read.......2002-06-06

It's lacking in some of its reviews and a lot of the important sites seem glossed over rather than sounding like the authors experienced it for themselves. However, most of the facts in it are already out of date. There are better books out for those with Ireland in mind as a destination.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2001-09-25

I look forward to using this book when I get over there this year...its very down to earth this book and not your typical touristy book...see for yourself...

4 out of 5 stars Good Supplementary Guide--Don't Use as Your Primary Guide!.......2003-05-22

During my three month backpacking trip, I used my copy of "Hanging Out in Europe" as a supplement to the more traditional "Let's Go" guides, and two things quickly became obvious about this book: (1) I was very glad I had it, and (2) I was even more glad that it wasn't the only guide book I had. Some of the criticisms offered by other readers are correct--the maps are absolutely useless, and the information is often dated, inaccurate, or both. Every address has to be double checked, and many phone numbers are wrong. The book is highly irreverent, which means the PC crowd will be offended at some point (the puritanical, the PC folks, or those whose idea of partying is having two glasses of wine with dinner should probably skip this book and go with the guides that the Harvard kids put out instead). But I truly enjoyed the irreverence of this guide--I often found myself reading through the guide just for fun, which I can't say about the other guides. I mean, how could you not be amused, with gems like, "Prague is party heaven--and I'm not talking about where dead communists go"?

The fact is, unlike the other guides, this one is aimed at a very specific subset of backpackers: young people who want to party, experiment, or do things that the other guides probably wouldn't talk about because their lawyers won't let them. (In fact, "Let's Go" has a bad habit of derisively labeling as "frat-like" any bar or hostel populated by people who look like they might have actually been on a date sometime before their senior year of college.) The drug culture in every city is given a thorough treatment and they are pretty precise about where certain things are okay and where they're not. This book does not treat you with kid gloves or worry about the possibility of offending you--it simply tells you everything it can and then leaves you to decide what to do with that information. Use it, ignore it, or be offended, they don't really care.

Another underlooked benefit of this book is that so few backpackers have it. The problem with "Let's Go" and "Lonely Planet" is that EVERYBODY has a copy. This means that every hostel, restaurant, or bar listed in them will be on the tip of most backpackers' tongues. With "Hanging Out in Europe," I had a completely different list of hostels in case the ones in "Lonely Planet" were booked up, and a different set of bars to suggest while everyone else in the hostel was itching to go to the one with the star next to it in "Let's Go." In addition, each city has a section full of suggestions for conversation starters with the locals (from which we got that tidbit about insulting the French Belgians to curry favor with the Flemish Belgians, sparking another reviewer's outrage). But these little tidbits are great and are somewhat unique to this book.

So the skinny on this book is: Buy it if you're part of its target demographic (young, non-PC, itching to party). But make sure you supplement it with a copy of "Let's Go" or "Lonely Planet," where you'll get more accurate info and more tips on where to take in the culture.

3 out of 5 stars A decent reference, but not the authority.......2003-04-10

I am currently studying in France and am using this book to travel around Europe. It's a good reference, but should not be considered authoritative. The book assumes that the reader is a college student who wants nothing more than to pick up, take drugs and party into the wee hours of the morning. If you don't fit this description, you may find the writing style grating and obnoxious.

            What's good:
-It gives you a basic overview of each city, the history and the culture, so you get a feeling for the city before you even get there
-It tells you the major museums to see (which you could find out from any tourist guide, not just this one).
-The hostel information was generally good. My friends borrowed the book to find hostels in their travels and they never complained.
-They do point out the hot spots in each city, but they're so obvious once you get to the city anyways. Look at flyers, search online and just explore, and you'll find the listed places and more.

            What's bad:
-There was no information on European culture and customs. The typical traveller would not be able to enter many of these places due to their own behaviour.
-The book gave no hints on cheap travel or ways to save money. They should have had information about various rail deals, alternate food and lodging ideas, etc.
-Most of the information was either outdated or false. Phone numbers were wrong, some spots only open a few months a year and prices were way off. Yes, cool spots appear and disappear overnight, but the book led me to places which seemed never to exist in the first place.
-The information is geared to make North Americans feel at home. 'Hanging out' shouldn't mean 'finding American-style places in Europe'. Most of the recommended hang out spots were either public touristy places or American-style bars.
-The book seemed to encourage drug use. Although decriminalised, drugs are still illegal in Europe and should not be consumed by foreign travellers.
-The authors were obnoxious and downright degrading to some cultures. In the Antwerp section, they encouraged the readers to insult the French Belgians to endear themselves to the Dutch ones.

Like any guide book, this one was outdated before it even hit the press. If you use it, double and triple check sites before you go or wind up being disappointed.
It's a good read just to get the feel for a city, but you'll find the same information and more just by 'hanging out' on your own, without a book to tell you how to be cool.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - hilarious and highly recommended!.......2001-12-27

As far as I can tell, the people who gave this book a bad review are too old to be using it in the first place (who else uses phrases like 'jocular' and 'slap-dash'?) I just got back from Europe, and the authors were right on to recommend the clubs, bars, restaurants, hostels and culture for all the cities I went to. I can vouch for the sections on Copenhagen, London, Barcelona, Rome and Prague. However, some of the addresses are incorrect. But the people who have complained about this should have read the disclaimer on Page # 1 advising the reader to double-check any addresses, phone numbers, etc. before simply showing up in a foreign city. All in all, this book added so much to my trip; those of us who don't take themselves too seriously should definitely pick up a copy.

1 out of 5 stars A fairly repetitive and often offensive book.......2001-02-15

This book makes jocular mention of Hitler's regime. It compares modern German police to Hitler's SS and further insults Germans and other nationalities. I find the book offensive and inappropriate. When it isn't making my blood boil, it's a hodge-podge of useless name-dropping and erroneous information.

4 out of 5 stars a perfect pice of frankenstien.......2000-12-29

ok. so i just spent 4 months in good old europe, and in the end, i think i figured out this whole guidebook thing. "Hanging Out" is a great supplement to other guidebooks. It provides snotty sarcastic comentary, and more social scene advice to some of the other more dry guidebooks. just what you need when lonely planet is starting to give you a headache. ok. so here's my humble advice...

seven steps to adventure with a Frankenstien guidebook 1. Buy "Let's Go Eruope" 2. Buy "Hanging Out" 3. Find a friend with another guidebook of interest 4. Select destination and rip out appropriate chapters. 5. Tape or Staple them together. 6. Ditch the rest of the books at the hostel. 7. Head towards some interesting sounding area or location with a sense of humor and adventure- see something that sounds familiar? Voila! You have three different opinions about it if it is in your Frankenstien guidebook. (if not, you have made an exciting discovery! Hurrah!)

don't forget- a gidebook is basicly disposable. it will be out of date by the time you get home. so get messy! rip it up! write all over it! get rid of the chapters you are not going to use! (those things are damn heavy, and really, are you going to use that chapter on iceland?) compare, contrarast and dicover! Buon Divertimento!

5 out of 5 stars I would have not made it through Europe without this book.......2004-12-18

This book, is the reason why my treck all through Europe was so successful. I am in college and I studied abroad in London for a semester, and on the weekends my friends and I would travel. We did not even know where to book hostels, and what parts of town are good to stay in, until we consulted this book. This book guided us from where to stay in Amsterdam, to the best outdoor cafes in Rome... It is the perfect guide for the college budget traveler, that does not have alot of time in one city. From the best party sights, to the best views, this book has it all.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining read.......2004-06-14

A great humourous guidebook that didn't put me to sleep reading it. Unlike alot of other travel books out there I was able to sit down and read this and stay as thourghly entertained as if I was reading a novel. I also credit this book for my trip to Prague, a city I had no prior interest in visiting until I read about it in this book. However alot of the directions to the clubs in this book, especially for bigger cities like Berlin or Rome, are horribly inaccurate or badly written. Do what I did in every city I went to, find a bar or trendy looking restaurant and grab one of the little monthly booklets(free) of all the club listings in the area, I have yet had this method fail me, even in Venice (you'll know what I mean if you've ever tried looking for a club there, and the "Cassanova" does not count!)

3 out of 5 stars Good, but there were some inaccuracies.......2004-05-26

This book was somewhat helpful, but there were some significant inaccuracies when I traveled throughout Europe in 2002. The lodging sections were useful and accurate, as well as the "touristy" information.

The sections on pubs and clubs were a bit out dated. One of the clubs in Barcelona no longer existed. The Paris section sent us into a part of the city that was a high crime area (two Parisians we later spoke to were amazed that we had gone there). This type of information is difficult to keep up to date because of the nature of these establishments. The information seemed outdated in 2002, so as summer of 2004 approaches it is only going to be more so.

The book is useful, but take it's recommendations on bars and clubs with a grain of salt, as they say. Don't be shy. Talk to local people your age about where the cool spots are; they'll have the best ideas.

5 out of 5 stars So much better than let's go.......2003-03-16

This is great. Especially if you are looking for something a little more trendy. Lodging is accurately described. Clubs were all a hit.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for young people.......2002-06-06

I studied abroad in Paris before I bought this book and must say that I felt a little clueless on where all the cool bars and clubs were. I wish I would have had this book from the beginning. It gives great advice on where to stay and meet people, which is not always easy to figure out in a big city. This book will help you get beyond the boring touristy stuff and help you get the most out of your european vacation.
