Logically organized by species, the consistent, user-friendly format addresses an animal's biology, unique anatomy, special physiology, restraint and handling, special housing requirements, feeding, surgery and anesthesia, diagnostics, and diseases. Multinational contributors bring their expertise related to many of the species from countries outside of North America.
Customer Reviews:
Essential for Zoo medicine.......2007-07-22
brilliant book for anyone interested in zoo medicine. Covering every aspect and common conditions and diseases.
Great book.......2005-04-22
I think this is a must have book for anyone interested in wildlife medicine, it helped me a great deal through college and i'm still needing it!
The most disappointing book in the series..........2004-12-28
When this book first came out, I thought it would be great. I was very disappointed by the brevity and superficial coverage of the chapters. This book, in order to be a truly comprehensive reference, should have been three times as big. This is the first time that a new edition is actually less useful than an older edition (Fowler 2 is a lot better!). The quality of chapters is very variable, with some being excellent and some flat out atrocious. (The crocodilian chapter is the best example of a "lacking" chapter). There are also a lot of typos (different spelling for some drug names) and inaccurate doses, which is disappointing. There are a lot of tables that are neither user-friendly nor clinically useful. However, this is one place to start with reference material to zoo animal species. It is not as nice as Fowler #2, but certainly more up to date and easier to acquire. It just has a "draft form" feel to it in content and editing. The book seems to be printed in a cheap quality paper that rips way too easily.
disappointingly limited by format.......2003-09-14
Numbers 3 and 4 of this series were updates of specific topics, much like the "current veterinary therapy" series. This, like Editions 1 and 2, attempts to cover all of zoo medicine in one volume. As this is a rapidly expanding body of knowledge, it is no longer really possible to fit into a single volume. There are very brief overviews of each species without enough depth present- this is not due to the authors, but the format. Especially disappointing is the apparent limitation on the number of references for each section. Providing references on where to look for further information would have made this book much more useful. Hopefully future editions will either show a return to the topic oriented format of 3 and 4, be a multi-volume set containing enough information to be useful, or at least contain sufficient references to be useful as a good bibliography.
similar to 1st edition.......2003-07-13
This text is basically a new, up-to-date version of the 1st edition of Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine (which is out of print and difficult to come by). For that reason I think it is wonderful.
I do think the editor's review is slightly misleading because there is very little information regarding specific diagnoses and their treatments. Instead there are lists of diseases which different species are prone to getting and formulary charts for the different species. If you want detailed information about a specific disease, diagnostics, and various treatment options, this book is not ideal.
What this book is great for: species biology, husbandry, basic zoo medicine...

Reference book.......2001-01-10
A great reference book for those how have exotic animals or are caring for them. The information is clear and accurate and is supported with examples and references.
Excellent Technical Reference.......1999-09-24
This book is not for primary care, private practice veterinarians. The book goes in depth into the medicine of specific zoo animal species (or exotic wildlife), such as okapi and rhinos, unlikely to be seen by the avertage veterinarian.
The book is an excellent, thorough and well edited volume of technical information, bound to be of use to anyone involved in zoo animal medicine. In keeping with the series, the book is organized in chapters more or less arranged by taxonomic groups and is easy to find the information that you are looking for.

Book Description
This collection of essays is the first major work in more than a decade to discuss the critical issue of wildlife contraception and the first ever to take up contraception-both theory and practice-for wild animals in captivity.
The authors, leading international experts on the subject, analyze the use of wildlife contraception for various animal populations, including nonhuman primates, ungulates, pinnipeds, cetaceans, and other mammals. The chapters examine and critique types of contraception, and their effects, and explore the best method for each situation.
Using the most recent data and findings, this comprehensive collection addresses problems related to unrestricted population growth, the ethics of wildlife contraception, and regulatory issues for wildlife managers, animal rights organizations, zoos worldwide, and anyone interested in the humane control of animal populations.

Book Description
Ben HoganÂ's former ball shagger recounts firsthand stories of the golf legendÂand reveals, for the first time, HoganÂ's Swing Secret, a source of mystery to golfers for more than fifty years.
Ben HoganÂ's pro-golf record is legendary. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he celebrated sixty-three tournament wins and became known as a man of few words and fewer close friends. Most of what we know about Hogan has been based on myth and speculation. Until now.
In the 1960Â's, though HoganÂ's competitive career was over, he kept the practice habits that had made him famous and remade modern competitive golf. He hired fifteen-year-old Jody Vasquez to help. Each day, after driving to a remote part of the course at the Shady Oaks Country Club, Hogan would spend hours hitting balls, and Vasquez would retrieve them. There, and over the course of their twenty-year friendship, Hogan taught Jody the mechanics of his famous swing and shared his thoughts on playing, practicing, and course managementÂunknowingly revealing much about his character, values, and beliefs, and the events that shaped them.
In Afternoons with Mr. Hogan, Jody Vasquez shares dozens of stories about Hogan, from the way he practiced, selected his clubs, and interacted with other star players to his little-known humor and generosity. Combining the gentle insight of Tom KiteÂ's A Fairway to Heaven (which recalls KiteÂ's golf education under Harvey Penick) with the sage perspective of PenickÂ's own Little Red Book, VasquezÂ's tribute is funny, poignant, and full of advice for golfers of all levels.
Customer Reviews:
A Pleasant Book with Interesting Lessons.......2005-11-15
Any novice golfer interested in developing a good swing eventually finds his way to Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons." That book, however terrific, provides little information about Hogan's life as a golfer and raises curiosity about a man that some have called "the Garbo of golf." "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan" provides insight into a golf legend from the point of view of a young man who worked for him for several years.
This is indeed a "small" book - it doesn't pretend to be anything else - but the stories are interesting, unusually personal, and quite revealing. The author clearly has great respect and even love for Mr. Hogan, and presents vignettes that provide windows into the personality of an extraordinarily talented, driven, highly secretive man. Even the "secret" of Mr. Hogan's swing is presented as an interesting story, rather than as a crucial tip that will unleash the latent PGA champ in all of us. (I suspect the "wrist cup" tip will be helpful primarily to those who have trouble controlling a hook, which was Mr. Hogan's main golfing issue for many years).
In sum, Mr. Vasquez offers his book as no more and no less than a series of stories that might be of interest -- and most students of golf will find the stories interesting, educational, and touching in their sincerity. An enjoyable and rewarding read.
Great book...ignore the 1 star reviews..........2004-08-07
The 1 star reviews were written by a pitiful little man who has a personal vendetta against the author. If you read the review you understand it is an attack and not a reflection of the book material. The stories in the book are personal experience stories telling of the human side of Hogan. These stories have never appeared in print before. The reviewer is simply jealous of the experience as everyone in Ft. Worth, Texas well knows....sad that jealousy plays here...To see real reviews...go to WWW.JODYVASQUEZ.COM
Don't Believe low Ratings on this book...........2004-07-27
Do not believe the low ratings on this book. I am a Hogan "Nut" and this was a great little book to get a refreshing glimpse of "The Man". I cannot remember the last time I laghed out loud when reading a book, but I did in several places while reading "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan". This book is written by a person who saw Ben Hogan in a very different setting, ie. as a caddie and ball shagger. Mr. Vasquez treats his subject with respect but not with the blind hero worship that sometimes accompany stories or books about Hogan.
Buy this book and enjoy a refreshing and unique look at the man, Ben Hogan!!!
Not much to this book.......2004-07-16
Not much here that hasn't already been written about Hogan, including the ?Secret? which is nothing more than a rehash of some old swing tips from years ago. I thought it was interesting that the author (a scratch golfer) never thought the ?Secret? was important enough to incorporate in his own swing, but now after 37 years he thinks it is ?book material?. In my opinion there isn't much to this book at all and it wasn?t very interesting. I watched Hogan hit shag balls and that was a lot more interesting than reading this book.
Not much to this book.......2004-07-16
Not much here that hasn't already been written about Hogan. The so-called "Secret" is nothing more than a rehash of old swing tips that the author (a scratch golfer) apparently never thought was significant enough to incorporate in his own swing, but now after 37 years, believes is "book material". In my opinion, there isn't much to this book and it wasn't very interesting. I watched Hogan hit shag balls and that was a lot more interesting than reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
A Short but Interesting Read.......2007-08-25
This isn't a golf book in the traditional sense but about someone who plays golf...really well. You won't learn any "secrets" in that you'll want to run to the course and try them. Instead you'll learn a little more about Hogan the person and not Hogan the golfer. To me Hogan comes across a somewhat shy in his personal life and as someone who doesn't know how to relate to people because of his fame. He doesn't see himself as anyone special, just someone who worked hard to be the best at something he loved. The book kind of takes Hogan off his perch when you learn he's like any other man and I think I would enjoy meeting this Hogan more than the one I previously had a mental picture of.
The book is fairly short and broken down into short easy to read stories that you can read it in one sitting or a little over 2-3 days.
Contains some insight about Ben Hogan the man.......2006-10-24
Readers of "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan" will not come away with great revelations about the game of golf, but they will find out a little more about the mysterious and very private golf legend, Ben Hogan. Written by Hogan's former "ball shagger", Jody Vasquez, "Afternoons..." is a short little book that is a one-afternoon read. Vasquez relates many stories about his days retreiving Hogan's practice shots at Shady Oaks Country Club. The reader will get a few snippets about Hogan's philosophy regarding the golf swing (including the famous Hogan "Swing Secret"), but will come away with a lot more information about Hogan the person.
Well worth your time if you're a fan of the game or of Ben Hogan, "Afternoons with Mr. Hogan" is a innocuous look back at a young boy's chance encounter with one of the legends of the game and the positive impact that Hogan had on his life.
