Book Description
This is the story of the trapper, Link Stevens, and his fearless snow dog, Chiri. It began when the trapper and his dog set out to rescue a naturalist stranded in the perilous Caribou mountains--the impenetrable storm-blasted heights from which no man has ever retumed. Forced to live by Stone Age methods, they relied on every resource of the dog's wild cunning and the trapper's woodlore. How they battled a killer cougar and bloodthirsty wolves, yet brought their man to safety, is a gripping, action-packed saga. It is also the stirring tale of the deep love between a loyal snow dog and his courageous trapper master.

Wild Trek & Snow Dog.......2007-02-12
These are two books that I read when I was in school (w-a-a-a-a-y back
when). Was pleased to find them at Amazon. Good books that brought back
old memories.
the further adventures of "Snow Dog".......2006-05-12
This is the sequel to "Snow Dog". These are my favorite books by Jim Kjelgaard. Intrepid trapper Link Stevens and his semi-wild dog Chiri are in for a big adventure when an injured ranger rides into their camp. The ranger is tough, but his arm is badly broken and he cannot complete his mission: to find a naturalist and his pilot whose plane crashed in the unexplored virgin wilderness of the Caribou Range to the north. Link sets up the ranger in his cabin and sets out to find the downed plane. Link and Chiri's home territory is sparse and hungry this year. It is early spring. After a bad winter of trapping, Link is amazed at the bounty of nature he finds as he and his dog journey north on foot. The Caribou Range is mythic and virgin territory. Link only knows of two others who earlier ventured there, and never returned. A sign of earlier visitors to the Caribou Range is a grizzly Link is forced to kill. Its body contains the remenants of an arrow fashioned from spent ammunition. Things get complicated when Link finds a human footprint. This book is filled with even more outdoor adventure, survival, and natural beauty than the first book, "Snow Dog". It is really exciting reading.
Lost Without Reach.......2006-05-11
Wild Trek is a story about a trapper, Link Stevens, and his loyal companion a snow dog named Chiri. Wild Trek tells the story of Stevens and Chiri as they travel together to find a Naturalist and a Bush Pilot who are stranded in the far out reaches of civilization because their plane crashed in the remote back country of Northern Alaska. Stevens and Chiri must cross the Caribou Mountains, a place from which no man has ever returned, to save these men.
From the first page of the book, I was hooked on Alaska. The author Jim Kjelgaard describes every detail of the Alaskan landscape with much detail and color. Stevens and Chiri experience many ups and downs during their journey to safety. There were many turning points in the story; just as soon as one problem was solved another one would arise, creating new challenges to be overcome.
Wilderness survival books are my favorite and this is by far one of the best I have read. If you like wilderness survival and action packed stories then you will like Wild Trek. Read this book and join Stevens and Chiri as they try to return the stranded travelers to civilization.
Kjelgaard's Greatest Work.......2004-09-02
Truely a well developed masterpiece. The plot was exiting and everything is in wonderfull discription. I just recently read ''Snow Dog'',another Kjelgaard favorite of mine, and now I see where Chiri came from. Read ''Snow Dog'' first to get the full story of Chiri's history. This is by far Kjelgaard's greatest work. If you are a dog lover, like me, or you need a thrilling adventure book this is a must read. And thank's Jim for all of your books, they are all captivating and thrilling.
Wilderness survival.......2003-12-05
This wilderness adventure story starts slowly, but the action picks up once our hero, Link Stevens, finds the men he was sent in the mountains to find. Thats when the chalenlege of bringing these men to safety begins. The story begins when Link Stevens volunteers to retrieve two men who crashed a plane in the mountains. Link brings his loyal wolf\dog Chiri. After some time Link finds the men alive, yet one of them has gone crazy from the isolation. Link must then battle the elements, wild animals, and all of the challenges of the mountains. all the while his dog Chiri helps greatly in this struggle. In fact, Link could never make it without the protection of Chiri. This great story will appeal to all readers, as long as reluctant readers can get through the first few slow chapters.

How Can I Be a Detective if I Have to Baby-Sit?.......2000-04-22
Well, that is the obvious question. This time Bailey have made another masterpiece of both sciece and art. I just love the way have her Stevie Diamond mysteries all end up up in a happy ending. Just how everything should be. But I got to admit while Stevie is baby-sitting, it will probably be the minutes and hours of boredom. Why did this this situation have to pop out of nowhere and distract Stevie's and Jesse's business of detecting? Their occupation so far is doing well, but what about the baby-sitting "catastrophe"? Well, I think you'll have to read on about that. I think people of all ages would enjoy this tremendous mystery book full of funny thoughts and and personal feelings.

A deeply minstering book.......2004-11-05
A Way Through the Wilderness is exceptional book that will minister to you deeply. Because every road to the Promise Land passes through the Wilderness, it is something every person has to go through. For one, the wilderness has been an area that many people fear to go through, especially after being indoctrinated with a triumphalistic mentality of the Christian life, but Jamie has shown not only the necessity of the wilderness, but also the comfort and security that it brings to the life of the believer. In a way, it makes me long to stay in the wilderness, but as Jamie pointed, that God's purpose is never to have the wilderness as an end, as some do, but as a pathway to the Promise Land.
Reading this book has shed light on the many areas that God had brought me thorugh, and the lessons learnt, but it also showed and reinforced what had been learnt and to strengthen them in my life. Jamie, having tracked through the physical wilderness that the Israelites had gone through and to climb Mt. Sinai, brings to life what Moses and the Israelites must have gone through. His writings cuts deep into the soul to search the hearts and bring the wilderness to the reader. The wilderness is not a physical place, but it is a process to bring us to the place where we can hear God and walk in His ways.
This is one book that will be read again. We need to make constant trips back into the wilderness, so that new promise lands can be found as we hear and obey God. The Epilogue is a climax close to the book as he describes the human response from a group that had tracked through the wilderness with Jamie. The responses are so human yet so divine, but unless we are constantly aware of our humanity, we would likely return to our wilderness to redicover that part of us.

Customer Reviews:
Good Entertainment, and No Lectures!.......2002-10-08
The lack of explicit moralizing is one of the best things about this instructive and funny book; too often this series is bogged down in parental admonitions. Yet the lessons are there: Practice, learn the rules, cope with pressure, play your best--but don't expect perfection. The pacing is excellent, the parents' and the cubs' perspectives are well-balanced, and the text is often very humourous. This excerpt describes the bears' practice field:
"There were no foul lines, just base paths worn by year after year of cubs running the bases. So there were a lot of arguments about foul balls. There was a rule against sliding into second base, because second base was a rock. And any ball that was hit into the duck pond in left field was a ground-rule double and an automatic time-out while they fished it out."
The book has 29 pages, with illustrations on each page. The illustrations are adequate, showing a fair amount of action in a straight-forward style. Recommended!
No Morals Here........2002-09-16
One of the things that distinguish the Berenstain Bears books from many other children's series is that the books almost always contain a moral lesson. Sometimes the lesson is big, sometimes it is small. However, those lessons are usually there.
Except in THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GO OUT FOR THE TEAM, there is no moral platitude. It's just a story. Brother and Sister Bear love playing baseball and end up trying out for a regular league baseball team. That's about it. It's a nice little story and kids who are trying out for a team may enjoy reading it because it illustrates that being nervous is common to all. Other than that though, it's just a nice story.
My Experiences.......1999-12-02
I really liked this book becuase when i was a freshman i tried out for the softball team and was scared. but i made it with flying colors and to find out if the bears do you'll have to read the book!

Lloyd Johnson descends into the dusty catacombs of baseball's archives and emerges with a multitude of first-time happenings--some obvious, some not, and some simply surprising. Running from the sacred to the arcane, they range from categories like the first relief pitcher, the first pitcher caught doctoring a ball, the first third baseman to charge bunts, the first championship team to be broken up, the first player to hold out for more money, the first manager to endorse nutrient drinks (and no, it wasn't Tommy Lasorda; he's late by more than a century), the first road trip, the first ballpark to burn down, the first uniform numbers, the first box score, the first player stalked by a fan, the first ... well, you get the gist.
Each inaugural moment is assigned its own page with appropriate illustrations; even better, each is linked to the long chain of baseball's evolution. Which is how the irrepressible Lasorda gets his due. He is a footnote to the fact that manager Charlie Comiskey, better known as the imperiously frugal future owner of the White Sox, spiked the punch for the St. Louis Browns with nourishments that may or may not have helped his Brownies, one of the more hapless squads in Major League history, digest four consecutive titles in the ancient 1880s. --Jeff Silverman

For baseball fans only .......2006-05-09
Baseball fans love statistics. They are part and parcel of the lore and the talk of the game. This book is built around an interesting idea, giving a page a short essay to ' firsts'. The first player to hit four- hundred, or the first player to win thirty- games in a season etc. There is a lot of baseball lore in this book much of which will be new even to the most dedicated of baseball funs.
This is a book for baseball fans only but I am sure they will enjoy it.
A must for all baseball fans!.......2000-06-25

Khadijah Embry Review.......2007-09-28
I'm Khadijah Embry from Chattahoochee Middle/High School. This book is about this boy name Mike and this boy Art was talking anf they was trying to figure out who that new boy was. It was 1 day he was walking home from school and he saw him on the side of the apartment building throwing the baseball against the wall, then he threw it and when it came back it was a little over his head then went over in the neighborhood pool. That is where Mike was at when he was walking and he saw it coming but by time he got over there it had got in the pool water. Then was trying to find something to get it out and Mike was like there got to be something around here to get it out with. Then they started talking they was telling each other about there self. Then Mike had ask him to be on the baseball team called the Checkmates so he can play first base. Then it was there first day he showed up late and everybody was mad. He finally showed up then Mike was like where you been at and he said I went grocery shopping with my mom and he was like sorry that i was running late. Then it was time for the game and Coach Terko was calling out the battign order then it had got to Yuri turn. The when he was hitting the ball and everyone was like that he couldn't hit for nothing. Then Mike had felt bad baecause he didn't want to tell Yuri that he need to quit because he did not kno how to play then toward the end of the book they had worked everything out with Yuri and him playing first base. They had helped him by telling him what to do and they had worked evry thing out with him and they had won there last game by working things out with Yuri then once they won the game everybody went out to the pool out at where Yuri and Mike live out in the apartments. I think it was a good book I do recommend it to someone else. IF YOU READ IT I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT
Look Who's Playing First Base review.......2004-01-09
Look Who's Playing First Base By Matt Christopher
Look Who's Playing First Base is a great book. I liked that Yuri was from Russia. I also liked that Don and Mike would argue about how good Yuri was at baseball when he didn't know they were arguing. I like this book better than Center Court Sting but not as well as The Comeback Challenge. I recommend this book to sport players and people who like to read.
My review.......2001-12-04
My review
Reviewer: A 10-year old reader from Hill AFB UT. USA
The book I read was "Look whose playing first base". Have you ever moved from another country to the USA? Yuri has. Yuri is a boy from Russia who comes to America and meets a boy named Mike. When Mike met Yuri, he was tossing a ball against a wall and Mike said hey what sup and asked Yuri if he would like to play first base man on there team. Because their last first base man moved away. Their teams name is the checkmates. Yuri was left-handed and left-handed players are best at first base. Yuri was not a very good player at first. The only reason he got to stay on the team is because of his bat and he always hits home runs. Don the teams catcher threatened to quit and so he did but if you want find out if he comes back and if they win their last game.
Something special. This book teaches you about sportsmanship and that winning is not everything also that you should never leave your real friends for dumb reasons
I think you should read this book because of the voluble lessons within the book. There are a lot of the other matt Christopher books to read that are full of exiting and touching stories.
