5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, helpful gudebook!.......2000-10-05

This is the 3rd book in the "Audubon Society Nature Guides" series that I've purchased, and they continue to be a pleasure to read and use. For anyone who lives near, will be travelling to, or has a general interest in Wetlands, this book is an essential. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and easy to use, but it's also a great general guide to Wetlands in the US. I am in the Chicagoland region, and almost all of the book applies to our area. Highly reccomeded for anyone from the novice to Wetland professional.

5 out of 5 stars An excellently titled book.......2004-02-24

This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.

This book would be a great read for anyone who is interested in nature, wetlands, or being a naturalist. It is not so detailed that beginners would be overwhelmed and not so simplistic that a moderately experienced naturalist would find it too light. I checked it out of the library but immediately ordered my own copy! I especially recommend this title to anyone who is interested in nature journals or just plain learning more about the world around them.

        Book Description

Bird watching is a serious business and the number one outdoor activity in North America. Wetlands, marshes, wooded, swamps, shallow lakes, ponds, and prairie sloughs are all considered wetlands and are the homes to a variety of birds that depend on wetlands for their food and habitat. In this comprehensive, fully illustrated guide to wetland birds, photographer and naturalist Scott Leslie profiles some of the most common species that novice birders may observe, including loons, great blue herons, greater yellow legs, bald eagles, warblers, sparrows, and sandpipers. Each entry provides a complete profile of a species including a description of its appearance, habitat, behaviour, calls and sounds, food, family life, distribution and migration, conservation concerns, and related species. Along with spectacular colour species photos, icons provide at-a-glance profiles of the species. Also included is a guide to North Americas most easily accessible bird-rich wetlands by region, a great resource that explains where to find some of the most fascinating natural areas on the continent.Wetland Birds of North America is the only guidebook on the market that answers questions about common wetland birds, features full-colour photographs, and is formatted to fit conveniently into a large pocket or a day pack.

Praise for Eastman's Birds of Forest, Yard, and Thicket:

"Presented in a readable, easy to follow narrative...a well-researched look at the birds and their lives."--Eirik Blom, Bird Watcher's Digest

Birds of Lake, Pond and Marsh describes how 39 common water and wetland birds nest, mate, and rear their broods in spring; how they feed in summer; whether, how, and where they migrate in fall; and how they survive in winter. This seasonal approach, together with an emphasis on ecological niches, distinguishes Eastman's book from other field guides. Precise illustration complements informative text, making "Birds of Lake, Pond and Marsh" an appealing and educational guide for birders of any skill level. Entries are arranged in the new taxonomic order based on DNA testing; selected bibliography and index are included.

John Eastman is author of The Book of Forest and Thicket, The Book of Swamp and Bog, and Birds of Forest, Yard, and Thicket. He lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Illustrator Amelia Hansen lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

5 out of 5 stars Takes up where the field guides leave off.......2000-10-31

Field guides are great for helping you identify the bird you just scoped, but once you want to learn more about the birds you've been seeing the field guides aren't of much use. This book covers a limited number of birds, but the information provided is excellent. He covers the life history of the birds, including a season by season account of the typical year in the bird's life. Mating habits, habitat preferences, and threats to their enviroment are some of the topics covered. In general, there are 3-5 pages devoted to each species. The illustrations are black and white, but are well done.

              Book Description

As a scientist, Loren Smith has made tremendous contributions to our understanding of playa ecology. Through Playas of the Great Plains he makes a further contribution by helping a wider audience understand the uniqueness and importance of these signature features of the Southern Great Plains.

              Great Plains Research

"This is a very significant contribution to the field of wetland ecology. Playa wetlands are very widespread and important, yet there have been few attempts to pull together all of the playa scientific articles and studies into one place. It is especially valuable that this book summarizes many of the recent scientific discoveries about these wetlands."

—Ted LaGrange, Wetland Program Manager, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

Shallow wetlands that occur primarily in semi-arid to arid environments, playas are keystone ecosystems in the western Great Plains of North America. Providing irreplaceable habitat for native plants and animals, including migratory birds, they are essential for the maintenance of biotic diversity throughout the region. Playas also serve to recharge the aquifer that supplies much of the water for the Plains states. At the same time, however, large-scale habitat changes have endangered playas across the Great Plains, making urgent the need to understand their ecology and implement effective conservation measures.

This book provides a state-of-the-art survey of all that is currently known about Great Plains playa ecology and conservation. Loren Smith synthesizes his own extensive research with other published studies to define playas and characterize their origin, development, flora, fauna, structure, function, and diversity. He also thoroughly explores the human relationship with playas from prehistoric times, when they served as campsites for the Clovis peoples, to today's threats to playa ecosystems from agricultural activities and global climate change. A blueprint for government agencies, private conservation groups, and concerned citizens to save these unique prairie ecosystems concludes this landmark study.

              4 out of 5 stars A winning combination!.......2001-07-22

Finally a great book on an oft-ignored subject...! The other books I found on wetland are usually too academic or too focused on photos. Rezendes/Roy's book combines fantastic photographs (about 30% of them cover one-and-a-half page) with in-depth (but not dry) essays that capture my imagination and educate me on wetland environments. Most of us would most probably visit one or two famous wetlands in our lives such as the Everglades, and that's about it unless you are fortunate enough to live near one. This book gives you the opportunity to experience in technicolor the marshes of Massachusetts and Georgia; prairie potholes of North Dakota and Canada; shorelines of New England and Maine; and many more. It is not a book about dead tree-stumps and saw grass as you would have thought; it covers the human impact, the environmental care that should be given, and the importance of preserving these wetlands. Get this book, ogle at the photos and discover/understand (and perhaps help to care for) these fragile ecosystems.... You will be amazed at the biodiversity of the wetlands and you will understand why "The Web of Life" is given as the subtitle.

5 out of 5 stars If you intend to buy a boat you had better be prepared........2007-09-18

A great little, well illustrated book that will aid any prospective buyer of an old or even new yacht. If you're thinking about buying a yacht it can be too easy to fall in love and see straight through some rather serious faults. This book will guide you through all the obvious and not so obvious signs of use and abuse, poor workmanship and design, giving you an informed opinion as to whether or not to call a proffesional serveyor or forget it and keep saving for a new boat - I think I'll keep saving. Maybe they should retitle it 'Inspecting the hole in the sea you throw money into' - Jokes aside, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow.......2006-06-02

This book is very easy to read and understand. When I wanted a book about surveying fiberglass boats, I was intimidated by the thought of 100s of pages of technical text. Luckily I bought this book. It includes many illustrations which added greatly. As informative as it is, it is also very quick to read. I found it a great coach to help me do my own non-professional survey.

I also have Mustin's book about surveying. Also good but it is more laborious to get through. I read both books a good 3 times each before I survey about 4 different boats, and I really felt confident that I knew what I was doing.

I am a fan of Don Casey's books. They are informative and easy to understand for the DIY person with limited experience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Clear and Concise. Could Save You Hundereds.......2004-11-12

I checked this out from the local library,
and ended up with several pages of notes in the
form of an outline of what to look for when
checking a poential candidate boat for purchase.

              I highly recommend it.

Enough so that I will eventually buy it simply
to loan out to friends (I took such copious notes that
I no longer need the book myself).

If you are looking at older boats in a price range that
doesn't justify a professional survey, this DIY survey
could save hundereds of dollars spent on a survey of a
              boat of limitted value.

If you already decided against a survey, it could save
you thousands by steering you away from an absolute
              basket case.

4 out of 5 stars Unstanding what you're looking at.......2000-05-24

I used this book in combination with another to really understand the boat systems and make an informed judgement. Are those cracks in the gelcoat serious? How do I know if the tiller attachment is a weak design? Casey helps you understand how to make a judgement about critical components from a novice/lay point of view. I found the book a very good resource.

4 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, and well illustrated.......1999-08-06

While not as detailed as a textbook might be, it covers general points very well.
