Compact and informative.......2006-12-14
While this guide isn't bursting with information about each plant, it offers a quick guide to many of the trees and wildflowers that one is likely to find in Virginia.
The guide is long and thin shaped with only a few pages. It's made of coated thick paper (or if you prefer, thin cardboard).

Not actually a book!.......2007-07-23
This is nothing more than a laminated pamphlet. Maybe it would be good for someone to keep in their glovebox if they work in the field a lot. However, I wouldn't call this a book.

This isn't nearly as comprehensive as I hoped..basically a laminated brochure. I couldn't possibly use it to identify the plants I had hoped to.

Expected a book, received a folded pamphlet.......2005-06-01
This was a disappointment. I expected a small "paper bound" booklet that contained illustrations and descriptions. I received a 8.25 x 22.00 sheet that was folded multiple times to create a 4.00 x 8.25 pamphlet. The material is good quality and should stand up to some exposure to moisture since it has a plastic coating. The illustrations are color and fairly good for drawings, but they are small and require imagination to figure out the scale. Size of the plant is stated, but I didn't see any description of flower size. For me, the descriptions are inadequate and left a lot to be desired.
I will probably buy something else and maybe use this in the field as a reminder of plant names. I don't believe that it is going to be much help identifying plants for the first time.
It shows approximately 40 trees and and 93 plants if I counted correctly.

Great book for most all levels.......2004-04-10
This book covers the tpes of plants that can be found in forest and is organized in a logical manner. The entire forest as an ecosystem is presented so that the information is not abstracted and presented as a list but is instead shown in relation to its niche. The first part of the book covers the concept of a forest as an ecosystem. Following this is a large list of the more common plants that can be found in the forest. Then there is a section on collecting plants that is very well written. The last section is a number of exercises that could be used in a classroom fieldtrip or by anyone interested in nature. Overall the book is easy to read and very helpful. I have all three of this authors books and they are all great additions to my library. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the world around them. It would be of special interest to anyone who is interested in becoming a naturalist as a hobby or anyone who has a child that they would like introduced to the world outside.

I borrowed this book from a friend, and while it was interesting, I certainly wouldn't want to keep it around for a reference. My main objection to this book is that it really only adresses the experience of women who go cruising with a husband or boyfriend, and where he is the main motivator, captain, etc. I would have also liked to see some discussion of the experiences of women cruising alone or with other women - I know there are some. A lot of the content of the book was very simple, common-sense advice. Maybe it is most useful as a pointer to other resources.

Not just for women.......2001-01-26
I bought this for my partner and myself. I read it first, and I was impressed with the authors ability to capture the big picture of getting ready to actually cruising. I have read many books on how to, but I found it wonderfully refreshing to paint the view from a women's perspective and stay more general. I gathered that is one of the authors points in the way men and women may learn to sail and cruise. I thought the book touched on many of the real life issues for couples.

Given the editorial reviews as well as the list of contributors, I purchased this book for my cruising partner. We were both surprised by the lack of original thought as well as the superficiality of the coverage. Not recommended for anyone but the most inexperieneced sailors.
Great for the would-be cruiser.......1998-04-03
The only thing missing in this book is more pages!!! This isn't a "How to Sail" book. As a would be cruiser, Diana Jessie answered many of my questions that are not addressed in other cruising books. The topics aren't just for women either. She discusses every day events that are encountered in the cruising lifestyle such as: how to dispose of trash, how you interact daily with your crew and with other boats, how to make the adjustment, and much more. My only regret is that she didn't go into more detail. She utilized the experiences of 21 participants, experienced women cruisers/sailors, for the research and background of the book. Great job and good reading!
