      Book Description

"Its pictures are memories of moments a half century old or older...rich grays, luminous whites, black in the deepest shadows. Some have the feel of the work of Dorothea Lange or Walker Percy...a few have the almost surreal aspect of the work of Diane Arbus."-- Bill Strother, Hoosier Times, Bloomington, Indiana (January 7, 2007)

Internationally acclaimed photographer Jack Welpott grew up in southern Indiana, served in World War II, and returned to the Hoosier state to attend Indiana University. Unsure of his direction, he enrolled in a photography class and met the legendary photography instructor Henry Holmes Smith. Under his tutelage, Welpott thrived. He became enthralled with black-and-white photography as a fine art form, and never looked back.

Driving to Stony Lonesome chronicles his years in Bloomington, Indiana. The 100+ photographs that make up the core of this gorgeous book are intense and personal, and include many fine examples of environmental portraiture of which Welpott was a master.

Welpott, now in his middle 80s, provides personal anecdotes along with the photographs. He didn't just take "art photographs"--he captured the heart of his subjects. By getting to know the people he photographed and winning their confidence, he gained an understanding of his subjects that would not belie a camera. This strategy served him well, and the photographs in this book richly capture life in rural southern Indiana.

3 out of 5 stars EVERY aspiring photographer should study it, none should buy it.......2007-08-18

This book should be in every public library in the country, although on no photographer's personal bookshelf.
There is not a single image in this book which I would want to hang on my wall, yet the overall quality of the photographs is superb. It is the sort of work by dedicated photographic enthusiasts whose prints fill countless albums, envelopes, drawers, and old print paper boxes throughout the world.
The importance of the book lies more in its instructive value than in its aesthetic appeal. There are no illustrations of Ansel Adam's "Moonrise," or Karsh's "Churchill," to inspire young (or older) photographers to greatness. Nowhere else that I am aware is available to show the reality of how the plain, often simple images of ordinary events touching the photographer's life are where and how the study of the photographic art should proceed. Not as an end, but as a significant intermediate stage of learning.
For a photographer to achieve this level of vision would be more than most of us could ask for, to exceed it would be a blessing of great personal satisfaction.
There is even a chapter of really (unintentionally) bad landscape photographs at the end, to confirm that the path of improvement does not always lead upward. Even the title is a hoax. There are only two images taken in those important depression and war years between 1936 and 1950.
It is somewhat like a song with great, uplifting words, and an unsingable melody.

      Book Description

      Now in paperback!

Painting Indiana, published in 2000 to popular acclaim and now available in paperback, represents the best work of a group of contemporary Hoosier landscape painters. It was commissioned by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association to document the beauty of the state of Indiana at the turn of the new millennium. Each of the five artists was assigned a group of counties; all 92 counties are represented in the book. These present-day painters are inspired by the same vision as the renowned Hoosier Group, which included artists such as T. C. Steele and J. Ottis Adams, who painted Indiana at the close of the 19th and into the early part of the 20th centuries. There is great variety in these portraits of Indiana: traditional landscapes, village and urban scenes, the woodland dream, lakes and rivers, all offering a rich mixture of scenes and styles worthy of a complex and beautiful state. The artists comment briefly on their work, and Earl L. Conn provides short histories of each county.

Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, garden columnist for the Indianapolis Star on Sundays and Tom Tyler, past Extension Educator and horticulturist for the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Indianapolis collaborated to pick more than 175 ornamental plants that do well in the Hoosier landscape. Detailed information on each plant including the "when, where and how" to plant is included. Although not every plant that does well in Indiana is listed, this book provides a great starting point. A must for long-time Hoosier residents and new arrivals as well!

      4 out of 5 stars worth a look.......2000-12-07

On Second Glance seems to be an encore presentation of Kanfer's earlier book of midwestern landscapes, Prairiescapes. Like many native midwesterners, I feel connected to the land in ways I can't explain, but Kanfer's photographs can do the talking for us. Kanfer's photographs are not what you may be expecting--it's hard to imagine, but as you may well find yourself drawn into his landscapes, reminiscing about how grandma used to have a porch like that, and what is that on the horizon? You can hear the crackle of fall leaves underfoot, and the sweet smell of spring in gently swaying greenery. You will find scenes to remind you of every hike or picnic in the country you ever intended to have.

This book belongs on every coffee table and gift list for those with any midwestern roots or daydreamers enjoying a simpler, less complicated life. If you love photography, or landscapes in general, you will also appreciate the composition and technical skills evident, and that Kanfer at least appears to be a purist in these works (no touch-ups or manipulations). I have recommended this book to many people, and all of them have loved both giving and receiving it; I hope you will, too.

Over the past hundred years, Indiana agriculture has evolved from family farming to a global industry using biotechnology and satellite positioning. This magnificent collection of more than 100 works of art by ten outstanding Indiana plein air painters tells the story of that transformation, the forces that brought it about, and the impact it has had on the people, the culture, and the economy of the state. These gifted artists, selected through a competition, painted subjects as diverse as livestock farms, lumber harvesting, meat packing, farmers' markets, and huge automated dairy operations. An introduction by Rachel Berenson Perry discusses the tradition of plein air painting in Indiana. Profiles of the artists and their work conclude this visually stunning book.

Paintings by Bill Borden, Mark Burkett, Mary Ann Davis, Lynn Dunbar, Bob Farlow, Jeff Klinker, Ron Mack, Nancy Maxwell, Carol Strock-Wasson and Scott Sullivan.

          Book Description

Over forty fine photographs and forty pages of poems that get to the heart of working lives in the Midwest. //

With a focused and indefatigable passion, Bruce Selyem has been photographing the simple elegance of grain elevators within the context of austere rural landscapes for fifteen years. Grain elevators remain fascinating and treasured landmarks in many Western communities, arousing contemplation and even reverence as historic and aesthetic icons. These qualities are readily apparent in the quiet beauty and studied compositions of Selyem's photographs. - Ellen Ornitz, Visual Arts Director, The Emerson & Beall Park, Bozeman //These are poems that spring from the ground like fresh seed, but never without human references. And it is the human references, in country circumstances, that make them familiar and understandable to everyoneÂ….Whether he is writing about giving his father a haircut or questioning him about the Great Depression, Jon Volkmer knows farm-people intimately and describes them with bedrock wisdom in a world of tarpaper, boxcars, corn, propane tanks, drill bits, wooden elevators, concrete silos, flour mills, rats, ferrets and barn ladders. -Samuel Hazo

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book of poetry about what it means to be a son.......2006-05-15

This is a great book of images and poetry, ostensibly detailing the life of the midwestern farmer-- but, so much more than that, the son/father chronicle that works its way into every page. If you can read the introduction to this book without shedding a tear, please give your father a call and try to rediscover what's missing.

Volkmer has an uncanny instinct to capture more than just "the thing" (which, I think, all too oftens characterizes contemporary poetry, writers reticent to comment), but rather the psychological and emotional context for things-- not just things in time, but moments in time. And what makes this book particularly tragic is the obvious honesty that these moments cannot be, can never be, replayed.

The pictures work much the same way, but the words pull this work up from tired (but important) Time-Life photos of dust bowl hardships to the heart of soul of the relationships among man, son, machine and survival.

          Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary blend of poetry and photography.......2006-04-06

Two artists work from their hearts -- a photographer with an obvious love for the meanings and visual power of grain elevators, the other a poet whose graceful, plainspoken words brings to life the smells, the sweat, and the sentiments of the plains spirit.

Okay, that's too hokey by half, but this is a grand book. The poetry is great -- even the poet's foreword is a pleasure to read -- and the photographs show the beauty and variability, even personalities, of the tallest things on the prairies. Easily worth the price, for anyone who has a soft spot in their heart for these grand structures.

Recent changes in the game, such as the addition of the libero position and rally scoring, are highlighted in the team-oriented steps covering offense, defense, transitioning, and out-of-system play. The carefully selected drills and step-by-step instruction speed the development process, and the scoring system for each drill and step helps gauge progress along the way.

Aces, kills, blocks, digs, and assists are at your fingertips. With Volleyball: Steps to Success, part of the popular Steps to Success Sports Series (more than 1.5 million copies sold), you can become a complete player in any formation.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful and full of god information but it's better for a club then a single person........2007-09-03

Everything thing is explained nicely and will improve your game there is one troubling part though. In the warm ups it says to do the exercises that will benifit you in your area of trouble. While some of them are obvious on how they help the others aren't. I'm sure after doing them for a time you will figure it out but it would be nice to have it clearly stated in the book.
Also this book is good for individuals, coachs and teams, but as a single person it takes more work. You're going to want at least on partner most of the time. Some drills require more people so you won't get the full benefit. However it is possible to modify most of the drills to two people. The hardest thing for a single person is probably staying motivated.
On a side note, you'll need more then a volleyball and a net. Some of the other things they use are a medicine ball, jump rope, ladder, something to mark a target like a cone, and tape or chalk. Plus it also helps to have a gym you can use with a net.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the steps of Volleyball........2007-03-16

This book is similar to John Wooden's Pyramid for Success!
