Book Description

According to the authors, the Church is being prepared to enter its most dynamic season of warfare, worship and harvest. The key to victory during this time will be our worship. When we praise God, He comes into our midst and manifests His rule and authority in our environment. He actually abides with us and "seats" Himself in the very center of our lives to lead us in the paths He chooses for us. When we ascend in worship we go to the throne of God and receive our strategy from Him to fulfill His purposes on Earth. In effect, we align with God's purposes and then we descend with our marching orders to accomplish those purposes. The result of this supernatural process will be a great harvest of souls for God's kingdom.

After reading just one chapter of this book I felt the Power of the Holy Spirit opening up my spiritual eyes to see Him for who He truly is in my life. This book teaches you how to go up in worship and see the blessings of the Lord! It will truly be a blessing in your life! I highly recommend this book. Be Blessed.

This book was by far the best book Ive ever read on worship- Chuck Pierce talks about ascending and descending in worship - it is awesome - has truly changed the way I view worship!I HIGHLY recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2003-01-09

This is one of the best books on worship I've read in a long time. The book talks all about "Ascending in worship, descending in war", just as in biblical times the worshippers led the people into war. It's about spending time with God in worship, in getting to know Him better, and to hear His heart, and then to go out from there to live life His way, including knowing how better to pray for people. I highly recommend it for all Christians!

Book Description

A layman's guide to "The Ladder of Divine Ascent". In the sixth century, a monk named John wrote a book outlining the stages of the spiritual life. He based his entire work on the image of a ladder of thirty rungs, stretching from earth to heaven. Each rung described a step in the pursuit of virtue and the spiritual life. Since it was first written, "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" has been an essential part of the formation of Orthodox monastics, and a mainstay of Orthodox ascetic spirituality. But it is not just for monastics.

This book is written to help those in a non-monastic setting understand how to apply "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" to their lives. Each chapter contains many direct quotes from St. John's writings, in addition to commentary on St. John's words. This book, therefore, should be used as a primer to the Ladder--as a helpful tool for ascending the spiritual heights.

5 out of 5 stars A Concise Practical Guide to Avoiding Lifes' Pitfalls.......2004-10-22

I greatly enjoyed this little tome, as it sets out in 30 bite sized chapters a useable and distilled essence of Saint John Climacus's " Ladder of Divine Ascent". Each one of the thirty hurdles seems at first blush quite trivial, but an honest analysis of ones' daily life will quickly reveal how we stumble on each one of the rungs of the proverbial ladder on a daily basis. This is one of those books you should probably revert to every few years, not only as a refresher, but also for purposes of regeneration and reaffirmation. Life and its circumstances are tough, but the reassurance and guidance this little gem provides us with will serve to re center us on the path. The beauty of this book is that it is valid for members of any creed or philosophical outlook, and the underlying text represents a pinnacle of Orthodox Christian teaching.

5 out of 5 stars An eye opener.......2002-03-30

Fr. John allows the Ladder to show us how low we tend to set the bar in our lives as modern Christians. "Ascending the Heights" goes through various aspects of our lives - our relationships, our passions, our worship, our home, work and family lives, and so on - and gives us concrete illustrations of where we fall down, and shows the heights to which we as Christians (indeed, as *humans*) are called. Knowing Father John's personal story makes this book that much more compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights & commentary on a truly classic Christian book.......2002-01-23

The subtitle of this volume is: "A Layman's guide to the Ladder of Divine Ascent." While this may reflect the publisher's intent, I think it could be more accurately described as: "Key quotes from the Ladder of Divine Ascent with contemporary Orthodox commentary."

Although I have only read portions of the original 6th century classic work by St. John Climacus (also known as John of the Ladder), I can say that, while Father John Mack does an excellent job of introducing contemporary readers to this great work, he barely scratches the surface. Having said that, Fr. Mack has been able to shed light on each of the 30 steps of the ladder and make them relevant for the non-monastic reader.

Accompanying Amazon's book description, you have the opportunity to view the table of contents, which gives you Fr. Mack's contemporary names for each of the steps. You can also read the first chapter, which will give you an idea of the content and structure of his writing.

Hopefully one reading of this volume will whet your appetite for tackling the entire Ladder of Divine Ascent, which is filled with pearls of wisdom. Amazon.com lists various translations of "The Ladder," however I'm only familiar with one from "The Classics of Western Spirituality," which contains an informative introduction by Bishop Kallistos Ware. This is the one that was used for discussion in our Orthodox church men's group.

Just as most Orthodox monastic communities read one step of The Ladder on each weekday during Great Lent, I'm hoping to reread (and read aloud to my family) Fr. John Mack's "Ascending the Heights" during the next Lenten period.

Now if I can only begin to put into practice what I have learned here, I may be on the road to salvation. May God help me.

5 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding!.......2001-03-06

This little book is a beautiful invitation to a deeper spiritual life for the Orthodox Christians of this age. Using down to earth examples it helps the reader understand how St. John of the Ladder's masterpiece ("The Ladder") relates to the very life of the modern Christian. It is a compelling hint that the works of the Holy Fathers do apply to us and do provide invaluable advice. Their writings are not for monastics but for every person who wants to be a Christian ( = to follow Christ).

The book reveals many passions present "in disguise" in our lives and offers practical advice on how to fight them. A contemporary Father once made the remark that Christians did not have, in the past, so many spiritual writings as we do today, but very few; they followed what they had and found salvation. I dare to claim that this book is also enough for those working on their salvation, provided they seriously try to put it in practice!

5 out of 5 stars A must-read book for every orthodox Christian.......2000-05-09

I read "Ascending the Heights" during this last Lenten season and I found it very useful help for my daily struggle with my passions. A primer to St. John Climacus' spiritual classic, this book was written for contemporary Christians living in the world but not of this world. In our effort to grow closer to Christ, to simplify our lives, to control our thoughts and actions, this easy-to-read book can enrich us all with the wisdom of the Church Fathers.

Book Description

From 1250 to 1795 Lithuania covered a vast area of eastern and central Europe. Until 1387 the country was pagan. How this huge state came to expand, defend itself against western European crusaders and play a conspicuous part in European life are the main subjects of this book. Chapters are devoted to the types of sources used, to the religion of the ancient Balts (and the discovery of a pagan temple in Vilnius in the late 1980s), and to Lithuanian relations and wars with Poland and the Germans. Under Grand Duke Gediminas, Lithuania came to control more of Russia than the prince of Moscow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any historian.......2007-07-14

I heard people praise S. C. Rowell for this book, but spending $100 on a book that dealt only with 50 years of Lithuanian history seemed way too much. However, eventually I bought it -- and that's the best history book I have ever read.

Most histories are just chronological narrative of wars, battles, and other events. What Rowell did was taking extremely scanty historical sources and piecing together a full view of history: wars, diplomacy, succession disputes, religion (paganism vs Catholicism vs Eastern Orthodoxy), culture, etc. and how everything inter-relates. His scholarship is rock-solid and you just pray for a sequel.

It is very different from usual over-generalized histories that are available. This one takes down to the very core of such claims as "Gediminas arranged shrewd marriages for his children." While you can easily find a list of these marriages elsewhere, the real appreciation comes only after reading Rowell's analysis. You can actually start understand what it was like to be sent over to an enemy's son to establish Lithuanian interest in some far-away region. Amazingly, it is done using not empty rhetoric but historical facts and documents.

So go ahead any buy this book. Hopefully, you will also learn how to write histories and conduct academic research.

5 out of 5 stars The best English language study of the subject.......1999-07-08

This is an extraordinary scholarly work. It clarifies the obscurities and subtleties of the Lithuanian situation in the last decades of official paganism when the Lithuanian state rivaled in geographic extent and ethnic diversity the greatest European nations ever known. The book primarily covers the rise and reign of Gediminas, the grand duke who was most responsible for Lithuania's astonishing growth in the fourteenth century. The subject in English has been covered only in popular and inaccurate general histories by Lithuanians influenced by the politics and mythologizing of the nation's first independence period. The author wrote the book while serving as Professor at the Centre for West Lithuanian and Prussian History at the University of Klaipeda, and it represents the first fruit of Lithuania's second independence in this century. The chapters include information on the importance of the region's peculiar landscape, the economic situation, pagan beliefs and their diplomatic usefulness, the role of Lithuanian princesses in forming marital alliances with Rus'ian and Polish principalities, the exploits of Lithuanian arms in expanding the realm, Gediminas's brilliant campaign in conquering Western Ukraine, its Rus'ian allies against the growing threat of Muscowy, and the attempt to develope a Lithuanian Orthodox Church in Vilnius are fascinating. One can only hope that S. C. Rowell will publish a sequel on the next sixty years of Lithuanian history to include the rise of Gediminas's grandson, the controversial Jogaila Gediminaitis, who became King of Poland-Lithuania, the first federated state in Europe and the largest in its history, Christianized his pagan people, despite their notorious (and admirable) cultural conservatism, and managed, with the help of carefully nurtured alliances first developed by Gediminas, to defeat the Teutonic Order, the military superpower of the day, using a NATO style army, Oriental strategy and technology, and Lithuanian ambush tactics. This book lays the groundwork for understanding the roots of the Jagiellonian dynasty of Poland-Lithuania and its political and philosophical accomplishments, fondly referred to by the present Pope John-Paul in the text of his speech to the UN a few years ago. The book's extensive footnotes, maps, geneological charts, and huge bibliography, to say nothing of the densely informative text, make the book worthwhile to anyone seriously interested in East European history.

4 out of 5 stars History is written by its survivors.......1998-01-01

S. C. Rowell has written an excellent account of the rise of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a pagan empire within Europe that embraced such supposedly "modern" virtues as religious and ethnic tolerance, multiculturalism and multiconfessionalism, although Lithuania's leaders were all pagans who practiced something closer to Hinduism than Christianity, and this at a time when the rest of Europe was winding down from a series of failed cruscades in the Levant and winding up for the domestic cruscades and the Inquisition.

What Rowell fails to touch on is how the Lithuanians managed to defeat the Mongols, who ravaged almost everyone else who stood in their path. In doing so Lithuania gained an empire that stretched from Bessarabia and Bukovina in the south to Estonia and east to the suburbs of modern Moscow. Rowell claims the Lithuanian leadership played a careful and calculated, perhaps cynical game of diplomacy with her rivals in the east and west, Russia and Germany respectively. One wonders if the bane of independent small states and nations in this part of the world, "Spheres of Influence," wasn't started by the Lithuanians themselves in interaction with the Mongols.

The other thing that left me unsatisfied was the lack of clear reasons for the decline of the Lithuanian empire. Traditionally Lithuanians blame Jogaila, or Jagiello as he was known in Krakow, for selling out Lithuanian territorial gains to the Polish after he married their child queen Jadvyga. The truth may also point closer to home than is comfortable for most Lithuanians: perhaps Lithuanians simply learned early what the British and Russians learned much later (and the Americans have yet to really learn): empire costs its masters much more than it does its conquered (i.e. as in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song, they gave it away then).

In any case, Rowell has written an excellent book with fresh and original takes on the entire subject. By actaully living among the Lithuanians of today's Lithuania (he taught at Klaipeda and may still), he has avoided errors almost always taken as gospel in the history of Lithuania as written, ultimately, by a Poland which has never forgiven Lithuania for being an independent entity after Czarist Russia fell and both nations emerged again as something like equals. Strange turn of history it be that people in the west somehow imagine Poland's independence as built of sturdier stuff than Lithuania's, while both nations have undergone almost exactly the same history of conquest, domination and reemergence since their leaders formed the joint kingdom. If the Soviet Union has fallen, does that mean that its juridical rules haven't held good, or are they still binding, if only on academia in the west? That is to ask, is it true to say Soviet Poland was less Soviet than Soviet Lithuania, or is that only a distinction the apparatchiks in Moscow and American campuses are capable of making? Rowell makes you wonder...

              Book Description

Rage At God is intense. It is passionate. It is powerful. It is relevant to today's world. And RAGE AT GOD is a revelation to every seeker after self-healing and personal peace.

Through three riveting human stories the startling, revolutionary concept of healing through rage at God is made clear and convincing. Marda, molested by her father, abandoned by her mother, unable to trust herself or others; Christopher who found his wealth and position inadequate compensation for his emotional starvation; Didi, a dynamic designer trapped in a literally murderous rivalry with her mother.

Author Anneliese Widman, former Broadway dancer and cutting-edge Bioenergetics therapist, explains her theory of "Reflectivism" in recounting these stories with gifted perception. The notion that self-responsibility and spiritually blueprint our lives traumatic events as instructive messages from our deepest being to illuminate our path, our pain, and our purification.

Rarely has a shocking concept -- rage at God -- been made so understandably human as in Anneliese Widman's portrayal of her three patients. Widman makes us see that the impulse to blame God for our troubles is the tragic result of a failure to comprehend the very nature of our creation -- the inviolate integrity of every entity, and its subsequent self-determination.

Once this realization is reached, Widman proves rage at God turns into love for God. And, in her most inspiring revelation, we see that God's love for us has been given to us all along.

Cross-country is the Rodney Dangerfield of sports in many high schools, overshadowed by the soccer craze and derided as a fall-back for those unable to make the cut in the glamour sports. If more people read "God on the Starting Line" they might see this sport for what it is: a demanding test of willpower, pain tolerance and team cohesiveness played out in a natural setting.

As Marc Bloom illustrates through this vivid depiction of his undermanned squad's break-through season, cross country is completely at odds with the pressures and temptations faced by today's adolescents in our video-game, fast-food culture. It's his ability as a coach to connect with these kids and instill a desire to rise above the ordinary that makes this simple story such a triumph.

The author, in his exuberance to connect with the reader and in his meditations on the larger meaning of running, lapses into a series of seemingly random associations in some passages that break up the training and race descriptions. Yet those with the patience to follow his train of thought through these interludes may come away convinced that the purification-by-pain and honest living demanded by cross-country running do indeed bring both coach and athlete closer to the divine.

This a very personal real story of an expert on Track and Field (Bloom) and empty nester with a desire to coach the pure running sport of Cross-Country. Remarkably, his only taker in New Jersey is St. Rose, a private Catholic School. Although Jewish, there is a prompt mutual respect between the team and Bloom. At this point in the book, Bloom has been coaching his team for several years but every summer he faces a challenge in team depth and symptoms of a summer of too little training. With his skeleton team, Bloom develops and gets to know each individual. He works personal motivation, skill in workouts, a touch of psychology and a mix of father figure and teacher together to help guide the boys through life. The book is surprisingly personal as Bloom reveals much of himself, his past and his family along with his own running experiences as he in turn learns about the boys under his tutelage. Bloom acts as a total coach knowing each boy's personality, personal conflicts and athletic needs while providing versatile training that promotes a team running style while also perfecting their training to the course they will run on at the Parochial Class B Championship. There is a great blend of faith as Bloom shares in their prayer before each race, holds a boys crucifix while he runs hoping that rubbing it will power the boy forward and at other times touching his own mezuzah for the same reach of faith and power. The final race is exhilarating as the boys give a tremendous effort and do run as a team as there coach has continual emphasized. Whether they win or not, they run as great heart, each one showing great improvement. The final sprint to the end is exciting as you literally sprint with the coach along the course to see how they finish. Without peeking at the end, you will find their final efforts surpisingly rewarding. Throughout the book, Bloom discusses the issues such as the detrimental effect hard training has on young girls, the effect multi-year sports has had on distance running (particular soccer) and insights to past great runners. The book may be more appealing to the mature runner as it's not all races and training but a look back at Bloom's life from mid life with an introspective look at the boys' lives and future as well. The book will be a treat for those former cross-country runners who enjoyed the simple purity of the sport and who also know that when the summer final cools, making your sweat turn cold, its cross-country season.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book for runners and coaches alike........2005-05-18

God on the Starting Line is an excellent non-fiction book about a NJ high school cross-country team and its coach. Bloom's smooth writing style brings out the joys and heartaches experienced by cross-country coaches and runners everywhere. I have coached x-c at two different Catholic high schools (in NJ and PA)and Bloom's honest description of the day-to-day experiences is very accurate. Bloom makes the reader feel a part of this team and his descriptions are both brutally honest, yet thoughtful for each team member. His race descriptions and training methods can be appreciated by runners, coaches and fans of distance running. Highly recommended!

Marc Bloom has finally written the book every high school cross country coach and runner has dreamed of writing. He chronicles one of his seasons as the coach of the St. Rose cross country team in New Jersey. St. Rose is a smaller Catholic school and he has a squad of 8 (then 7) boys. He recounts their trials and triumphs through one summer and fall. Mr. Bloom is a very good writer (find a copy of an article he wrote called "Me and Julio down by the old school track") and he does an excellent job of telling this story.
