The Struggle for Tennessee: Tupelo to Stones River (Civil War)

The Union fights to control Central Tennessee in 1862.......2002-11-18
Street divides these events into five chapters: (1) Heyday for Raiders focuses on the guerrilla tactics of both sides, including James J. Andrews stealing the Western & Atlantic Railroad locomotive named the "General," and the raids of John Hunt Morgan. (2) Stumbling Towards Perryville covers the Confederates campaign to retake Kentucky, or at least stop the Federals from moving deeper into Tennessee, climaxing with the Battle of Perryville where both sides claimed victory. (3) Clash at Doctor's Creek has Rosencrans' bringing a new spirit to the Army of the Cumberland preparing them for the key battle in the campaign. (4) The Fight for "Hell's Half Acre" tells the details of the first half of Battle of Stones River outside Murfreesboro on December 31, where the Confederates turned the Union flank in on itself like a jackknife. (5) Across Stones River and Back completes the battle as the successful attack of the Confederates on the left Union flank succeeded in driving the Federals behind the river, where massed artillery fire staggered the Rebels and set the stage for a successful Union counterattack. With this victory, the Union forces could plan their move on Chattanooga.
"The Struggle for Tennessee" is illustrated with the historic photographs, etchings and color sketches that have always been one of the richest parts of the Time-Life series. I appreciate the detail that Street is able to give to the Battle of Stones River, because by devoting two chapters to it he is able to elevate its significance in the Civil War in a way I have never appreciated before. The story of the Western Theater picks up in two volumes, one devoted to Grant's Vicksburg Campaign in "War on the Mississippi" and the other picking right up on this volume with "The Fight for Chattanooga."

VALUABLE resource for my trip to Big South Fork!!!!!.......2006-01-17
Manning's book will get you in trouble! Far from Updated !.......2001-06-27
Since Manning's First Edition in 1994, the Big South Fork area suffered a 100-year snow storm which devastated the forest knocking millions of trees down, closing hundreds of miles of trail. This storm occurred in February 1998. I have recently tried to follow two separate horse trails in Manning's book and found one barely passable - had to dismount my horse and very carefully squeeze under fallen trees not once, but several times. The other trail described simply does not exist due to trees downed. The directions for this trail are so poor that once you have traveled several miles into the gorge, there is no way you could find the route described in the book even if it did exist. The acknowledgements in the new addition indicate the same people reviewed this edition's content as did in 1994. Several of these people have been gone from Big South Fork since 1996,'97, and 98.
One gets the impression that a new cover has been put on the 1994 edition and a few sentences changed. The book advises visitors to check with a ranger on trail conditions, but totally omits any discussion of the effects of this huge storm event on the environment, and does not warn visitors of its possible consequences in planning a trip that depends on trails being open. Also, in Manning's 2000 Edition, trails do not match the trails system shown on the official Trails Illustrated Map by National Geographic for Big South Fork published in 1998. This edition does not benefit the trailrider!

Upper Cumberland Country (Folklife in the South Series)
William Lynwood Montell Manufacturer: University Press of Mississippi ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0878056319 |
Book Description
Tucked between Appalachia and the Deep South, the Upper Cumberland region straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line along the banks of the Cumberland River. Here, dating from the days of the nation's earliest history, is one of America's richest repositories of folklife. Rather than revealing an artifact, however, this comprehensive study of the Upper Cumberland reveals a living tradition whose roots in the past continue to nourish the present.Documented here in descriptive text, photographs, and interviews are varieties of folk cultural expression in music, architecture, crafts, schools, religious life, folk medical practices, and customs surrounding birth, puberty, marriage, and death. Upper Cumberland Country explores the spectrum of folklore from yesterday and today--from pioneer life and early folk architecture to teens "cruising" and women deer hunters. In a region filled with relics, modern voices from the Upper Cumberland speak directly of the living traditions that give the region its unique character. Though rooted in pioneer heritage, the folklife here springs into the present with resonant meanings for contemporary times.

Too much speculation, not enough documentation = a mixed bag.......2004-07-10
In graduate school, I was taught the essential importance of backing up information with sources, while leaving personal opinions to the footnotes. Mr. Hess rarely uses supporting evidence even for the numerous quotes sprinkled throughout the text, breaking a fundamental rule of scholarly writing. This absence especially stands out in an historian such as Mr. Hess. I am not sure why the editor(s) of this series allow this kind of sloppiness.
On the positive side, Mr. Hess writes with an interesting and engaging style. He is seldom dry. Mr. Hess makes many a provocative comment about Braxton Bragg, with nary a endnote, but he seldom interacts (if ever?--I would have to read it again to be certain) with other historians whose views might differ from his. The Bragg comments are controversial and need support rather than speculative opinion.
The books in this series are not cheap, and one would hope each volume could live up to its price. A proper bibliography, like the kind required for a graduate thesis, would be appreciated. I haven't seen one in any of the three volumes that I have read in this series.
In conclusion, if you want an entertaining Civil War read, Mr. Hess has written such a book. If you want something scholarly, you will have to look elsewhere, and the pickings appear to be slim, at least for this part of the Western theater.

Spare the Rod ý NEGLECT the child........2000-11-14
And while I have moved away, there are two great reminders of a childhood that I can only describe as ecstatic. A picture on my wall of E.B. White. And Hickoff & Plumley's book about the best places to fish. Some I've been to. Some I was taken to by these authors.
For those of you who are not as nostaglic and wistful about New England, let me with all honesty say that this book will serve as a superb and practical guidebook. And for those who have a little something more connected to the region, this book is a blueprint for irreplacable memories.
And damned good fishing spots and tips.
