4 out of 5 stars The Union fights to control Central Tennessee in 1862.......2002-11-18

"The Struggle for Tennessee: Tupelo to Stones River" is the second of the volumes in the Time-Life Civil War series dealing with the Western Theater of the war after the Battle of Shiloh. Obviously this part of the war has never received the attention of the Eastern Theater where Lee's Army of Northern Virginia dueled the Army of the Potomac, so there is something intrinsically interesting about finding out more about what was happening out West. James Street, Jr. presents his subject as a war of maneuvers in and around Tennessee. After the capture of Corinth, Mississippi in May 1862, a portion of Major General Don Carlos Buell's Union army was dispatched towards Chattanooga, the critical railroad center that was the gateway to Georgia. However, Confederate armies under Generals Kirby Smith and Braxton Bragg moved from Eastern Tennessee into Kentucky to threatened Louisville and Cincinnati. After a drawn battle at Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, Major General William Rosencrans succeeded Buell and that December left Nashville to fight Bragg's reorganized Army of Tennessee near Murfreesboro, on the banks of Stone River.

Street divides these events into five chapters: (1) Heyday for Raiders focuses on the guerrilla tactics of both sides, including James J. Andrews stealing the Western & Atlantic Railroad locomotive named the "General," and the raids of John Hunt Morgan. (2) Stumbling Towards Perryville covers the Confederates campaign to retake Kentucky, or at least stop the Federals from moving deeper into Tennessee, climaxing with the Battle of Perryville where both sides claimed victory. (3) Clash at Doctor's Creek has Rosencrans' bringing a new spirit to the Army of the Cumberland preparing them for the key battle in the campaign. (4) The Fight for "Hell's Half Acre" tells the details of the first half of Battle of Stones River outside Murfreesboro on December 31, where the Confederates turned the Union flank in on itself like a jackknife. (5) Across Stones River and Back completes the battle as the successful attack of the Confederates on the left Union flank succeeded in driving the Federals behind the river, where massed artillery fire staggered the Rebels and set the stage for a successful Union counterattack. With this victory, the Union forces could plan their move on Chattanooga.

"The Struggle for Tennessee" is illustrated with the historic photographs, etchings and color sketches that have always been one of the richest parts of the Time-Life series. I appreciate the detail that Street is able to give to the Battle of Stones River, because by devoting two chapters to it he is able to elevate its significance in the Civil War in a way I have never appreciated before. The story of the Western Theater picks up in two volumes, one devoted to Grant's Vicksburg Campaign in "War on the Mississippi" and the other picking right up on this volume with "The Fight for Chattanooga."

Rick Rhodes' book takes you on a cruise of the great rivers with all of the vital information needed to transit them safely. He provides marina names and facts about their facilities that you need on a trip of this nature. We will have it on our chart table when we go for our river trip.

        2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2007-08-21

My husband & I wanted to run the IL. river from Grafton to Liverpool in our boat. So we bought this book. Before we received it, we put our boat in at Liverpool, mile 128 & went down to mile 97.5 Brownsville. The book doesn't mention anything about the Marina in Havana where you can get gas & eat. It doesn't mention Bath at all where they have a bar on the river & you can get food & drinks. It says you can get gas in Brownsville, but you can't! They have food & thats it! Those are enough mistakes for us to decide to send the book back. It cannot be reliable. Unless you want to get stuck out on the river without gas, I would not buy this book!

        5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2006-03-23

Although I do not have a boat, I saw this book at a library and it has what I would consider very useful information, such as maps, distances, channels and phone numbers for bridge tenders, where to dock your boat, what's available when you dock, amount of turbulence in the locks, height of bridges in the up and down positions, and a whole lot more. It is written as a downstream narrative.

        Book Description

The Upper Cumberland region of Kentucky and Tennessee, often regarded as isolated and out of pace with the rest of the country, has a far richer history and culture than has been documented. The contributors to Rural Life and Culture in the Upper Cumberland discuss an extensive array of subjects, including popular music, movies, architecture, folklore, religion, and literature.

Seventeen original essays by prominent scholars such as Lynwood Montell, Charles Wolfe, Allison Ensor, and Jeannette Keith uncover fascinating stories and personalities as they explore topics including wartime hero Alvin C. York, Socialist Party Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Kate Brockford Stockton, and even a thriving nudist colony, the Timberline Lodge.

        5 out of 5 stars A rollicking romp through a little-understood area.......2005-09-09

Professors Birdwell and Dickinson have compiled and edited a delightful collection of essays that explore the cultural and historical roots of the Upper Cumberland. This area stretches from north to south in mid-Tennessee between Nashville and Knoxville where the mountains start to rise toward the Great Smokies. Anyone who thinks that the inhabitants are prototypes of The Dukes of Hazard will be surprised to read the truth about the music, history, crafts, culture, religion, and habits of a people proud of their heritage and sturdy as the mountains that surround them. The book encompasses Civil War lore, religious revivals, moonshining, music, farming methods, and many more insights into the lives and history of the area. It is at once scholarly and readable (those two characteristics do not always go together) and is a treasure of information for the student of Southern culture as well as an entertainment for the casual reader.

5 out of 5 stars VALUABLE resource for my trip to Big South Fork!!!!!.......2006-01-17

Mr. Manning provides a lot of background info on the geology, biology and history of this area of Tennessee & Kentucky - info that greatly enhances the visit! While I'm one to use guidebooks, I always ask for more current info from the Park staff when visiting a new Park. He gave very practical advise regarding hiking & biking in the Park - as well as info on paddling the river!! He did give an overview of the trails - but, in his "100 Trails of the Big South Fork" he strongly suggests that one always check with local Rangers for trail conditions in the Park. So, enjoy your trip!!!

Also, there's a review of this book that blasts Mr. Manning for not mentioning the snow storm and its effects. I don't think she understands the publishing process. Books go to press only every few years - and the updated draft is sent in many months before they are actually printed. It's impossible for a guidebook to be current at any particular time.

1 out of 5 stars Manning's book will get you in trouble! Far from Updated !.......2001-06-27

The 2000 Edition of this book is certainly NOT UPDATED. The cover claims: "A thoroughly updated, comprehensive guide to the Big South Fork..." This is misleading. One wonders who reviewed this edition and why the information is so misleading and why changes due to a huge 1998 snow storm are not discussed or reflected in the trail maps and descriptions. I would like my money returned!

Since Manning's First Edition in 1994, the Big South Fork area suffered a 100-year snow storm which devastated the forest knocking millions of trees down, closing hundreds of miles of trail. This storm occurred in February 1998. I have recently tried to follow two separate horse trails in Manning's book and found one barely passable - had to dismount my horse and very carefully squeeze under fallen trees not once, but several times. The other trail described simply does not exist due to trees downed. The directions for this trail are so poor that once you have traveled several miles into the gorge, there is no way you could find the route described in the book even if it did exist. The acknowledgements in the new addition indicate the same people reviewed this edition's content as did in 1994. Several of these people have been gone from Big South Fork since 1996,'97, and 98.

One gets the impression that a new cover has been put on the 1994 edition and a few sentences changed. The book advises visitors to check with a ranger on trail conditions, but totally omits any discussion of the effects of this huge storm event on the environment, and does not warn visitors of its possible consequences in planning a trip that depends on trails being open. Also, in Manning's 2000 Edition, trails do not match the trails system shown on the official Trails Illustrated Map by National Geographic for Big South Fork published in 1998. This edition does not benefit the trailrider!

        Book Description

Tucked between Appalachia and the Deep South, the Upper Cumberland region straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line along the banks of the Cumberland River. Here, dating from the days of the nation's earliest history, is one of America's richest repositories of folklife. Rather than revealing an artifact, however, this comprehensive study of the Upper Cumberland reveals a living tradition whose roots in the past continue to nourish the present.

Documented here in descriptive text, photographs, and interviews are varieties of folk cultural expression in music, architecture, crafts, schools, religious life, folk medical practices, and customs surrounding birth, puberty, marriage, and death. Upper Cumberland Country explores the spectrum of folklore from yesterday and today--from pioneer life and early folk architecture to teens "cruising" and women deer hunters. In a region filled with relics, modern voices from the Upper Cumberland speak directly of the living traditions that give the region its unique character. Though rooted in pioneer heritage, the folklife here springs into the present with resonant meanings for contemporary times.

        3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2001-02-10

I first discovered this book, when it was a required reading for folklore class I had in college. This book not only includes information about what happened in Kentucky in the past, it also includes a lot of customs of the present day. One chapter focuses on hangouts and customs of young people in Kentucky, including cruising and string racing. Montell also includes a lot of pictures. I was amazed to see some pictures of people and places from my own county. Although I prefer Montell's other books (like Ghosts Along the Cumberland) that focus on particular folk stories, this was still interesting enough for me to read.

        Book Description

Banners to the Breeze analyzes three major Civil War campaigns that were conducted following a series of devastating Confederate defeats at the hands of Ulysses S. Grant in the spring of 1862. After the recapture of Tennessee, Confederate armies under Braxton Bragg and Edmund Kirby Smith conducted a brilliant advance into the deeply divided state of Kentucky. Meanwhile, other Confederate forces under Sterling Price and Earl Van Dorn attempted to recapture the town of Corinth, Mississippi. As the year drew to a close, Bragg’s army was involved in a tactical draw at the battle of Stones River. Earl J. Hess mixes dramatic narrative and new analysis as he brings these campaigns together in a coherent whole. Previously unpublished historic photographs of the battlefields are included.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too much speculation, not enough documentation = a mixed bag.......2004-07-10

I am generally just too lazy to write reviews, but in this case I thought I would get off my duff and get to the keyboard.

In graduate school, I was taught the essential importance of backing up information with sources, while leaving personal opinions to the footnotes. Mr. Hess rarely uses supporting evidence even for the numerous quotes sprinkled throughout the text, breaking a fundamental rule of scholarly writing. This absence especially stands out in an historian such as Mr. Hess. I am not sure why the editor(s) of this series allow this kind of sloppiness.

On the positive side, Mr. Hess writes with an interesting and engaging style. He is seldom dry. Mr. Hess makes many a provocative comment about Braxton Bragg, with nary a endnote, but he seldom interacts (if ever?--I would have to read it again to be certain) with other historians whose views might differ from his. The Bragg comments are controversial and need support rather than speculative opinion.

The books in this series are not cheap, and one would hope each volume could live up to its price. A proper bibliography, like the kind required for a graduate thesis, would be appreciated. I haven't seen one in any of the three volumes that I have read in this series.

In conclusion, if you want an entertaining Civil War read, Mr. Hess has written such a book. If you want something scholarly, you will have to look elsewhere, and the pickings appear to be slim, at least for this part of the Western theater.

        3 out of 5 stars Bloodied Banners.......2001-04-02

One of five of the Great Campaigns of the Civil War volumes, BANNERS follows the series format, presenting a moderately-priced campaign study incorporating recent scholarship to present an operational analysis of a particular ACW theater. BANNERS carries the reader from the Confederacy's bungled Kentucky campaign, through the less well known battles of Perryville, Iuka and Corinth; down to the meatgrinder of Stones River. Hess' story is accompanied by 11 sound maps, good notes, and, my favorite, a solid, well-presented bibliographic essay. I own and recommend the entire series, very accessable even to the general reader and well worth the money. This series is an ideal interim step for the history buff graduating from popular history to the more scholarly (& more expensive) works. Happy campaigning!

No home movies, no photo albums, no old songs warm myheart more than traveling through New England to some of the very places described in this book. That's where my memories lie. That's where my father took me, and his father before that.

And while I have moved away, there are two great reminders of a childhood that I can only describe as ecstatic. A picture on my wall of E.B. White. And Hickoff & Plumley's book about the best places to fish. Some I've been to. Some I was taken to by these authors.

For those of you who are not as nostaglic and wistful about New England, let me with all honesty say that this book will serve as a superb and practical guidebook. And for those who have a little something more connected to the region, this book is a blueprint for irreplacable memories.

And damned good fishing spots and tips.

I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Steve Hickoff last winter. I bought this book from him at the seminar, and have used it a lot more than I ever thought I would. My family and I were on vacation at Sebago Lake in Maine recently, and the information in the book on Sebago Lake, the Crooked River, and the Presumpscott River was invaluable. The maps of the Crooked and Presumpscott rivers especially allowed me to get up early, get to a good fishing spot, and even catch a couple of fish (all before the rest of the family even knew I had gone fishing). I really like the Crooked River, it has become one of my favorites. As an earlier reviewer stated, this book gives you the information to get to the good spots, without wasting a lot of time driving around. The book also provided information on what sections of the rivers were fly fishing only, and the local regulations for taking trout and salmon. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who plans on doing any fly fishing in Maine, NH, and Vermont.

FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT TO THE ALLAGASH IN MAINE TO SEACOAST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. HICKOFF AND PLUMNEY KNOW WERE IT'S AT. FROM THEORY TO FLIES TO PRACTICAL INFO. THEY NOT ONLY TALK THE TALK, THEY WALK THE WALK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY FLY FISHERMAN RATHER A BEGINNER OR A EXPERT. TIGHT LINES, STEVE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

5 out of 5 stars tells you what you need to know.......1999-04-18

I travel around New England regularly and usually have a fly rod in my car. It is always frustrating when I have a couple of hours of free time and I spend it trying to figure out where to fish instead of spending it fishing. This book has all you need to know to find a spot and catch (and hopefully release) some fish. Unlike some books the authors don't limit themselves to only one kind of fish or claim that every spot they talk about is going to rival the best place you've ever fished. Highly recommended for anyone who gets the privilege of fishing in New England!
