Great Book!.......2006-03-16
This book is a favorite coffee table book. It is intelligently written and well designed from a pedagogical point of view. There is an ancestry table for each breed and great pictures. It is so inexpensive, anyone with an interest in horses should own this book. It will become a household favorite.
The Best of Horse Encyclopedias.......2003-10-16
I loved this book!!!! Everytime I need to look up a horse I look at this book. It has everything you need to know in it. The pictures were awsome too. I would say that every horselover needs to have this book. I'm 15 years old and it told me everything I needed to know about horses.
The illustrated encylopedia of horse breeds..........2002-12-16
this was a very useful and resourceful book! it had alot of information on each of the breeds of horses. it has information on horses i have never even heard of before! it had wonderful color photos, size charts and general information on the horses...great book for some one studying horses or equine science or something....
Covers many topics involving horses.......2002-08-13
I am a wrap around therapist for an autistic 13 year old boy who cannot speak. He loves horses. We use this book everyday for our drills. This book has so many facts that are uncomplicated, but informative. It has beautiful pictures in it. Sometimes we just look at the pictures of horses because they are so beautiful. It covers almost every topic about horses. I have learned a lot about horses My client has learned alot through this book.
Had many interesting unknown breeds........1999-08-15
I liked this book because it had many breeds I had never heard of. Susan McBane grouped the breeds into regions of the world so you can find where the horse come from. McBane also put the breeds of the horses which were breed together to form the breed. McBane gave great information about the breed and it's highlights. If you are looking for an interesting breed you have found your book.

Movie Star Cats.......2007-04-14
If you want your cat to become famous then this is the book for you to read. This book explains all of the areas that cat judges are looking for when they are searching for the winners, i.e., movie stars in a cat show. Photos are in color and classic.
This book was a real disappointment.......2001-10-05
The write-up and history sections of each breed in this book are very shallow, not detailed, and in some cases inaccurate. For example, the Chantilly Tiffany breed was NOT listed or discussed. Instead, this book lumps the Chantilly/Tiffany breed together with the British Tiffanie breed (p. 206), which as accurately stated in other books, "British Tiffanies have nothing to do with the American Chantilly/Tiffany breed." The write-up in this book is just plain wrong.
Furthemore, most of the information in this book is of the level of detail about what you would expect from a middle-school or high-school book report. I was very disappointed. "The new Encylopedia of the Cat", by Dr. Fogle (DK Publishing) which we ordered from Amazon.com at the same time, is much better and has a lot more accurate and informative details. If you want one book, get Dr. Fogle's. "The Illustrated Encylopedia of Cat Breeds" is shallow and inaccurate. It was a disappointment and a waste of money.

A wonderful book!.......1998-10-22
This is the best book that I have come across dealing with the different cat breeds. It is very detailed as far as coat type, coat color and coat patterns are concerned. It also gives you a breaksdown of the different show points. A truly wonderful book with beautiful color photos to help you classify any cat!

I was hoping for more.......2002-04-22
While this book had many photos of different breeds, I was surprised at the omissions. I had hoped to see a Fila Brasilero, Havanese, Dogue de Bordeaux and a Neapolitan Mastiff. The Coonhounds, both the red and black and tan were also missing. There was no mention of the American Eskimo dog. The picture of the Rhodesian Ridgeback did not show the ridge that they are so famous for. The information about the dogs contradicted other books and my own experience. I was disappointed in this book.
Pretty Good..........2002-04-18
I've had this book for a few years, and a lot of the imformation on the breeds, such as the kennel club recognition and key characteristics are great. The histories though seem to be disputed between the author of this book and the AKC Dog book and other authors of all-breed dog books.
All in all, a pleasure to read and view the illustrations and maps of where the different breeds originated.
Great Book, beautiful pictures.......2001-03-23
I thought this book was a good book. It gave a lot of info, though it could have given more. Lots of the pictures were good pictures, but the picture of the King Charles Spaniel for instance made it look bad, the fur was all ruffed up and it was hunched up, it just didn't look good! most of the pictures and information was pretty good. I would recomend this book for people that are interested in dogs, and information about different kinds of dogs. Just one more thing.... it doesn't give pictures of all the dogs, there are a couple that just have names and info, no picture but i would say 97% of them had pictures, so ya, i would buy this book!

I haven't found a better book about dog breeds yet. The information is accurate, the pictures are beautiful and the price makes it affordable for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book!.......2007-04-25
I found this book very readable with lots of beautiful pictures. It has sections on horse breeds(horses&ponies), horse's coloring/markings, grooming, traveling, trimming, stable management, feeding, health & caring for a sick horse, tack, it even has a section on riding(mostly eastern)and driving! This book only gives basic information with a reasonable amount of detail, I would reccommend this book for any horse lover of any age. If you plan on owning a horse someday and want a book on training your horse, this isn't the best choice. If you want to know what goes into caring for a horse I would reccomend this book. Again, it has wonderful pictures and is easy to read, I love it and have confidence you will too.
The Kingfisher Illustrated Horse & Pony Encyclopedia.......2007-01-27
This was a wonderful book for a person who loves horses and likes to see different pictures of horses and ponies. My niece loved it so much she actually sleep with it the firsr night.
Book Description
This is a comprehensive encyclopedia of the main cat breeds of the world today, a perfect introduction to learning about and selecting a breed to keep, or even to start on your own.
Customer Reviews:
I have to agree with the last review...........2006-09-18
Great book. A good amount of information. I bought the book after adopting a Maine Coon mix kitten and was a little confused by the statement that she wasn't meant for indoor living!
Quite a Good Guide.......2002-12-06
Cat books are far less common than dog guidebooks, and this is quite a good example of the genre. Each breed is shown in one or more pictures (usually showing different color variations), described in fairly detailed text, and summarized in a table describing physical attributes, coat care, and temperment.
The book is divided into sections by coat length; long hair, semi-long hair, and short hair. A brief section at the end discussing breeding and raising kittens.
A few minor quibbles: the book was originally published in England, so while it does talk about American CFA standards, the emphasis is on British standards -- and more coverage is given to breeds common in England, with less given to American breeds.
They also note that some breeds (Maine Coons, for example) are 'freedom loving' and not suited to be kept indoors. Most responsible breeders/owners would argue that ALL cats, regardless of breed, are better off indoors, or if permitted out, still kept under control with fence or leash.

Customer Reviews:
a very good book.......2007-01-04
If you have a kid who is crazy for dinosaurs, this is the book for you! Lots of clear pictures where you can really see the animals from head to toe. Although this is by no means a complete dinosaur encyclopedia, there are pronounciations for these impossible words and helpful scales comparing each dinosaur to an adult human.
The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia.......2004-07-07
The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia written by David Burnie and illustrated by John Sibbick is a wonderful text with plenty of well captured illustrations along with the text to captivate your imagination about what dinosaurs were like. This text vividly captures you as it attempts to recreate the lives of the different dinosaurs covered in this encyclopedia.
"The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" is arranged in a chronological order giving copious attention to dinosaur habits and habitats. Also, there is attention to detail about information on how fossil finds can be interpreted as the information is related to the time of the dinosaurs. The writing is easily understandable and children will wonder at the pictutres along with the prose.
I found this book to be up-to-date on a lot of information and is and outstanding guide to dinosaur life and times. There is some comparative anatomy, as the book goes into detail about the Maximum Length, Time, and Fossil finds as to location as to where these animals were found. This makes the book interesting as we see contrast to different types of dinosaurs as to location on the map. Also, the interrealtion of species to one another.
"The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" is a book that can be used as a reference as well when comparing different dinosaurs to one another. The contents of this book is as follows:
Life in the Distant Past
The Age of Ancient Life
The Age of Reptiles
Plant-Eating Giants
Ornithopods
The Meat Eaters
Giant Meat Eaters
Armored Dinosaurs
Reptiles in the Air
Reptiles in the Sea
The Age of Mammals
There are subcatigories in each of these major chapters and there is adequate detail making for and interesting read. Dinosaurs are a significant part of prehistory. The more we discover about dinosaurs, the more we find out about the world we live in today.
This book rates a solid five stars for imaginative illustration and a text that is easily understood giving the reader a well-rounded view of life's past. You will not be disappointed with this book as it is unbelievably rewarding.

Beautifully detailed illustrations.......2005-09-02
I've been enjoying this book for over ten years. Highly recommended for the naturalist in your life, especially the young ones. The illustrations are spectacular. The amphibian section is mindblowingly realistic and they are all works of art. It's a great reference book and an interesting addition to your coffee table. The main animal phyla are covered: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish. Subsequent orders are all found. I wish they'd make an encyclopedia that would cover lower forms--I bet that would be amazing! This is a useful guide for any traveler encountering new beasties.
This is the most valuable nature book in our library!.......1999-08-06
The illustrations in this book are fantastic! The artist's renderings of animals are colorful, refined and better than photographs. The book is divided into five sections, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. Each page offers illustrations and a discription of the animal, it's habitat, and behaviour. If we see an animal and don't know what it is, the first thing we do is look in this book. A wonderful addition to any home library.

Goshen Memories.......2002-10-03
As someone who bicycled through Rockbridge County for years, I know firsthand the beauty of the Goshen Ramble (#29) and the fun that comes with the Rockbridge Challenge (#31). I eagerly awaite Jim's next effort--hopefully Pennsylvania. Jim's descriptions of the sights, eateries, and technical details in "The Basics" are accurate. Here's looking forward to doing the Burkes Garden Ramble (#39) and eating at Spanky's in Lexington! This guide will accompany me when next I travel to Virginia--whether by bike or car.
The Best Biking Guidebook Ever.......2002-06-13
I bought this new guidebook without much expectation. Boy, was I surprised! Road Biking Virginia may very well be the best written guidebook I ever read. The author takes the reader through the ride, noting scenic and historical highlights as well as areas of caution. I found the narratives addicting, and couldn't put the book down until I read every one. I thought I new a lot about my state - but I actually learned a good deal more. The maps are excellent and the directions are straight-forward and easy to understand.
If there is one flaw, the author doesn't seem to like city riding and doesn't offer any it his selection. But the book does offer fabulous road routes (I've done many myself) emphasizing Virginia's great back roads. Everyone should try the Goshen and Rockbridge rides and at least once in your life, you need to make the trek to Burkes Garden. What a great destination and ride.
I've waited a long time for a road ride book for Virginia. Fortunately, I now have one and it is good. I highly recommend it to all Virginia cyclists. Happy Riding,
Steve
Great Job Jim!.......2002-06-11
This is the guidebook that should be in every bikers' saddlebag!
Mr. Homerosky has managed to pack an abundance of information on 40 rides in just a bit over 200 pages. The ride and route information is clear and concise and a delight to read. I like the way the author gives the rider the oppurtunity to tailor the rides to his/her level; the rider can 'go the distance' or opt to
cut it short without missing the best of what the ride has to offer. I like his notations and footnotes that point out the local interests: and the mentioning of local bike shops and watering holes are a huge plus.
Finally, road routes.......2002-06-10
Whether you're a cycling tourist, recreational rider, or competitive cyclist, there's something for everyone in this guide. Mr Homerosky profiles 40 different routes on pavement all across the beautiful state of Virginia from the sea to the mountains. It's obvious he's ridden each one from his descriptions and knowledge of the terrain. His use of title words for each route is especially clever. Each route has a description, map, cue sheet, and when warranted a profile of elevation gain and loss. Pretty neat, and very useful. He also includes contacts in each community so you can further explore the area, or can be helpful for the non-cyclist on your trip.
A must have for any road cyclist wanting a dependable guide of road routes in Virginia.
Road Biking Virginia.......2002-05-21
What a wonderful resource for anyone interested in exploring the beauty of Virginia via bicycle! I love it and plan to get good milage out of my small investment. The writer has done the hard work by furnishing all the needed details for forty rides scattered throughout the state. All a rider needs to do to enjoy any or all of them is to add bicycle and pedal.
Book Description
Mountain Bike Virginia explores the land whose terrain and geography are as unique and diverse as its history is rich and exciting. If you enjoy exploring remote coastal environments or the quiet backroads of Central Virginia's horse and wine country, or if you prefer hurtling down white-knuckled descents, crossing over deep river gorges, and cycling past waterfalls, wildlife, and rolling pastures, then Virginia is the place to be and this book is for you. Throughout its pages, Mountain Bike Virginia describes more than 50 of the state's greatest mountain bike rides, from sea level along the dunes at False Cape to nearly 6,000 feet atop the wind-beaten summits of Virginia's highest peaks.
This guide contains exhaustive and comprehensive trail descriptions from beginner to advanced, GPS-quality, digitally designed relief maps detailing each ride, accurate route profiles showing the ups and downs of each ride, detailed directions to get bikers to the ride without getting them lost and detailed mile-by-mile directional cues, difficulty ratings, elevation gain, trail contacts, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for biking and hiking.......2007-10-01
This book is well organized and detailed. I have not been lost due to bad intel and have thoroughly enjoyed each trail so far. The difficulty ratings are fair, too. The lists of 'best rides' at the beginning of the book that go beyond geography are very nice.
Holes in the Atlas.......2004-07-15
I found the format of this book to be quite useful. Trails are divided into geographic regions with detailed instructions on how to get to the trailhead. Each trail in the book has a standard trail map, an elevation map (useful to gauge the trail's difficulty), some text to give more detailed directions, and other trail details such as parking fees, whether or not you can bring your dog, etc. Don't buy this book if you are interested in riding in the Lynchburg / Bedford / Roanoke area as it seems the author has not spent a great deal of time in this part of the state. Otherwise, Northern and Eastern VA are well covered.
Outstanding Detail.......2000-06-05
Mountain Bike VA is an excellent book for the mountain bike enthusiast or just someone who enjoys biking at a more leisurely pace. Divided by VA Counties; each ride has detailed instructions on how to reach the trailhead, associated costs, distances, type of trail, difficulty, a trail diagram which includes a trail terrain profile, a couple of pictures and a witty, descriptive narrative. Well worth the minor cost and then some. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Here is everything bicyclists need to know to enjoy off-road adventures in a region layered in more than its share of pavement. From this book cyclists can expect exhaustive and comprehensive trail descriptions, from beginner to advanced, GPS-quality, digitally designed relief maps detailing each ride and accurate route profiles showing the ups and downs of each ride. In addition detailed directions get them to the ride without getting lost. Detailed mile-by-mile directional cues are also provided with difficulty ratings, elevation gain, trail contacts, and much more.

Misses almost all the good spots to MTB in Maryland/DC.......2007-09-13
This book is pretty much a joke of a guidebook. Most of the "trails" are things like bike paths and not really mountain biking... It pretty much misses all of the great trails in Maryland
Great roundup.......2007-04-10
I live in DC and it's difficult to find a good ride without taking an afternoon drive. This book is really thorough and helpful, with places I wouldn't have otherwise known about and more info than I already knew about other places.
