Book Description
This is an analysis of how conditions in the oceanic environment differ from those in the familiar terrestrial world, describing the techniques and ingenuity required to reveal the populations inhabiting the colossal volume of the deep oceans and how its inhabitants have adapted to survive and
flourish within it. Many issues of deep sea marine life are covered including: surface phytoplankton's roles; chemosynthesis at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps; reduction of biomass with depth and energy conservation; mechanoreception; chemoreception; vision; animal life styles, seasonability, sex
and size; and the unique variety of life in the deep ocean both on the sea floor at in midwater.

The Biology of the Deep Ocean.......2007-03-19
I cannot submit a review as the item has not arrived yet. My request to the publisher would be to have more of this item available as it appears to be in high demand.
Book Description
Scientists have mapped less than 10 percent of the ridge of underwater mountains in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. It is here that 95 percent of the volcanic activity on earth occurs. And it is also where the scientist Rich Lutz has tracked the remarkable evolution of bizarre creatures that spawn in hydrothermal vent fluids that are poisonous to most other forms of life. How can life exist in this world of utter darkness? For Rich Lutz, a pioneer in marine biology, each dive to the frontier of the deep holds the possibility of discovering more clues that might help us learn how life on earth began after our planet was formed billions of years ago.

An excellent, eye-catching title, Diving to a Deep-Sea Volcano deserves a space on library display shelves........2006-11-06
Plenty of kids' books cover life underwater - but how many follow a scientist in his explorations in a research sub? A 'you are there' atmosphere for grades 3-5 is created in an engaging picture book which pairs color photos throughout with an account of scientist Rich Luz, whose explorations have changed the nature of deep sea science. An excellent, eye-catching title, Diving to a Deep-Sea Volcano deserves a space on library display shelves.

10 stars for this book.......2004-08-16
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the underwater world. Incredibly beautiful underwater photography of high quality. The photos do not only depict animals swimming around but, for example, sarcastic fringehead males in a showy territorial "fight," close up.
I also like the authors' sensible view about animals and diving in the ocean. No show-off accounts of near-shark-escapes but an honest experience, mostly good but sometimes scary, of working under water. The authors recount some extraordinary events, such as a ride on a manta after freeing him from entangling fishing nets, or unexpectedly finding themselves surrounded by a school of fish that is being slaughtered by marlins.
With this book we get a wonderful view into the ocean world but also a fascinating account of what it is like spending many hours a day waiting, scouting, decompressing, refilling tanks and back to waiting so one can capture a never seen one-minute event on film that made it worth all the work.
A poetic underwater journey!.......2000-08-30
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wife Michele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in the foreword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelp forests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids in magic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and sea turtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Since this book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowly and in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the light text that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marine photographers. And then you will also find some information about the sea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving and underwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the price that Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book!
A Must Read for Fin Fans!.......1999-12-04
For those of us who read everything we can on underwater photography, this book provides an added dimension and delightful reprieve from the technical how-to's of most underwater photography books. This book is a series of fascinating stories about the adventures and mis-adventures Howard and Michelle and their staff encountered when shooting different subjects. A fascinating and stimulating book, it provides anecdotal insight into how they approach certain projects without dwelling on the technical "how to's" found in most underwater photography books. Everyone studying underwater photography or just enjoying the sport of diving should surface long enough to give themselves this present. It sure made me want to grab my fins and camera and head off to points all around the world. Thanks to Howard and Michelle for putting together such a compelling read. And of course, it has beautiful photographs.

Great Introduction to the Deep Ocean.......2002-01-11
I am somewhat familiar with deep ocean exploration and this book does a great job of describing the experience. I like that the text is simple so that a young reader can enjoy it alone but it also has scientific names of deep sea features and creatures for older readers and this makes it a nice resource book as well.
Quite accurate depiction of the seagoing experience.
The terminology is very accurate as are the pictures.
I read this book several times before I gave it as a gift for a young child.
Book Description
Internationally renowned deep-sea pioneer and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia A. Earle, in consultation with experts from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is our peerless guide. This one-of-a-kind atlas immerses us in the infinite wonders of the world offshore through more than 150 cutting-edge maps, photographs, and satellite images. Atlas of the Ocean lays bare a realm as challenging and untapped as spaceand as vital to our existence as the air we breathe.
Accompanying exquisite, up-to-the-minute maps, Earle's compelling text reveals the beauty and complexity of the ocean structurepast, present, and futureand explores its flora, fauna, and diverse phenomena, from giant squid and kelp to the smallest microbial bodies. Fascinating point maps take us into the planet's deepest abyss, the Mariana Trench; along the planet's longest mountain chain, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; on the migration route of humpback whales; and to a host of marine sanctuaries worldwide. An unequaled resource for both education and entertainment, Atlas of the Ocean also explores the progress of fascinating technological developments that will help scientists discover the ocean's innumerable uncharted regions and life-forms.

A Complete Study of the Oceans.......2005-07-04
This book will be a useful reference for anyone seeking technical reference material about our oceans. Dr. Earle is a well known explorer of the ocean realm, and she has done a fantastic job of assembling much useful material for this volume. The scope of this book ranges from the equatoruial regions to the polar zones.
The maps and accompanying explanations are quite thorough, and will provide a ready reference for all things related to the exploration of our seas.
Where's the editor?.......2005-06-06
The word Atlas is misleading as there is alot of text accompanying the various maps. Some pages are nothing but text. I expect an Atlas to use maps to explain more rather than words. The maps that are in the book are good, but numerous sections do not have one.
The book is split into sections/topics written by individual persons. However, in many sections the text ends in mid-sentence, as if several pages were forgotten about in each section or as if there was some arbitrary cutoff on the # of words per section.
of this approx 200 page book, sentence cutoffs appear on these pages. Each page also represents the end of a section.
p.37,55,63,82,89,96,115,141,149,163, and 175
clearly, not just a simple oversight.
Also, the table of contents is inadequate, as it primarily denotes the major sections - which is by ocean, but not the individual topics.
I give this 2 stars (Rather than 1) as the idea is good, and the content that is in the book - looks good. Execution is another story. Frankly, I would be a embarassed by the editing and quality control oversights.
Outstanding photographs, interesting maps, dodgy text........2004-02-07
If you are looking for a coffee book with excellent illustrations I would definately recommend this book. Should you wish to read it I would hesitate on recommending it. The text is disjointed and the main topic of a paragraph is often confused with numerous (tentatively linked) topics. Issues are readdressed time and time again, which leads me to think the book is more a series of strung together papers rather than a well thought out book. However, if you don't mind that, the book does introduce many interesting people involved in marine science and as I said, the illustrations are outstanding.
Barely an atlas.......2001-12-18
After hearing a discussion of this book on NPR, I ordered this book expecting a thorough atlas of the ocean floor. I was sorely disappointed. Although there are some good maps in this book, the bulk of the book deals with other topics such as: ecology or the need for protecting our oceans, current temperatures, predicting El Nino, etc. Don't get me wrong, it is a good book but it is far from what I expected. Full of pretty photographs and illustrations as usual for a National Geographic effort. I believe that the hype made me believe the book would have details associated with a land atlas.

Book Description
The Right Stuff of the "Brickyard"-the name given by the racers to the fabled Indianapolis Speedway-is chronicled in Against Death and Time, for one fatal season, 1955, in the post-war glory years of racecar driving. This book tells the story of the reckless, dispossessed young men who raced not for fame or money-there was none-but for "the sheer unvarnished hell of it." Brock Yates has been writing for Car and Driver for more than thirty years and is one of the best-known people in the racing world. He raced his own car for a season in a Plimpton-like adventure recorded in Sunday Driver, one of his six books. He has published widely, from Playboy to the Wall Street Journal, and has appeared on every major television network as both a racing and automotive industry commentator. An evocative writer with an absolute command of the period, Brock integrates unexpected and fascinating detail into a character-driven story of men compelled to compete against themselves, time, and death. Brock's Dutch-like strategy of a fictional narrator observing, interrogating, and reporting on his real-life protagonists imparts the immediacy of fiction to this minutely accurate account. Black-and-white photographs are featured.
Customer Reviews:
tolerable for a race fan, unless you also happen to read books..........2007-08-20
I read this book because on a particular day I was in the mood for a book about racing (being the month of May), and the one Economaci did is fairly unfindable in book stores. This looked pretty good - Roger Ward, Mad Russian, the Le Mans disaster - seemed like it might be a nice history book.
The problem with this is not necessarily the content, some of the info was interesting, and I found only few very minor errors that I can't even remember...The problem is the way the content is told. This "I was actually there" first person this is insanely unbelievable to the the point of asinine fantasy. Being there when Vukovich was killed (and being a vicarious pal to boot) is believable. Then being at the Le Mans tragedy...could have happened to a few people. But being at Indy in 1955, Le Mans in 1955, being friends with James Dean and waiting on him to arrive before his death, nailing the Warner Brothers executive's race car groupie daughter, meeting Enzo Ferrari during the early days of gp, and on and on...
I had a good bit of difficulty just finishing this thing and I love open wheel racing in any form it takes. But sportswriters are very seldom good at writing fiction, and this is no different. So if you are in the mood for some airline reading on the way to Indianapolis in late may....get something else.
Big Disappointment, Sloppy Writing.......2007-03-15
Ugh. What a disappointment. This book badly needed an editor -- any editor. It reads like a high school draft that was rushed together before deadline. Yates is terrific in the pages of Car and Driver, where he's got adult supervision, but this book is unfinished and unprofessional. He contradicts himself, misspells words -- including, ironically, 'editorial' -- invents new words, and defines the same term three times in as many chapters. There's one whole chapter where lowercase L's are used in place of the number 1.
Apart from that, his peculiar "faction" or I-was-there style doesn't really suit the material, or his talents. He's still writing a history, he just inserts the words 'I' and 'me' from time to time to liven it up. It doesn't make the story compelling, just lame. Too bad.
Perhaps Yates' most disappointing work..........2006-05-15
After reading the enthralling 'Cannonball' a few years ago and the passionate 'Hot Rod' soon after, I was looking forward to 'Against Death and Time'. As a rule, I am a fan of all things motorsport and I enjoy historical fiction, however, I was supremely disappointed in this offering. Yates' main character seems to be a blatant reproduction of Levy's 'Hank Lyons' character from the 'The Last Open Road' series. If you are looking for an interesting book by Yates, buy 'Cannonball', if you are looking for a fictionalized account of the early days of sportscar racing, buy something by B.S. Levy.
Re-gifter!.......2006-01-02
I recieved this book as a X-Mas gift. RE-GIFTER. Brock Yates' writing reads to me like that of a fellow who has too much going on and decided at the last minute to add "write this book" to the list.
There's a few decent passages, but so much of this seems read as bland, hurried text. I own it, but I sort of wish I didn't.
One Fatal Attempt at a Novel.......2005-11-22
Brock Yates brings impressive credentials to his effort to write what is loosely called a novel. "Against Death and Time" is set in 1955, a tragic year in auto racing history, and is told through the eyes of an unnamed free-lance writer. The book's concept sounded great, but I found the execution to be horrible.
A plot really doesn't exist in the conventional sense. The chapters simply follow the narrator around the world to the locations of numerous tragic accidents that year, culminating with James Dean's in central California. At least half the chapters read like straight non-fiction with no "plot development" other than "I flew to France." There is no dramatic tension involved in the book whatsoever, although the author does throw in one jet-set babe, apparently for no reason other than to introduce the narrator to James Dean.
The story might still have worked if it were not for the distractions from poor research and editing.
A dozen times, he refers to the clear-blue flame of the the methanol fuel used in Championship and Sprint cars. In 1955 these cars burned gasoline, and would do so until methanol and fuel bladders were adopted following the terrible main straight crash at Indianapolis in 1964 that killed Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. Later in the book, he has Buddy Holly and the Crickets playing "That'll be the Day" at a Hollywood party. Unfortunately, that song wasn't released until 1957. Elsewhere, the narrator is assigned to write an article for "Liberty" magazine, but that assignment is later cancelled by "The Saturday Evening Post." An unusual business practice, to be sure.
Finally, I have never seen a book with as many typos in my life. I question whether this book actually had an editor. There are more typos in this one book - over a dozen (I lost count) than on the rest of my bookshelf put together.
The world of auto racing in 1955 could have been a really good yarn. "Against Death and Time" is not.
