Strength Training for Sport
ASIN: 0199269246 |
Book Description
Some understanding of the biochemistry of exercise is fundamental to any study of the factors that contribute to sports performance. It is the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of cells and tissues that determine the physiological responses to exercise, and yet the teaching of exercise biochemistry is poorly developed compared with exercise physiology. Where the subject is taught at all, the student often finds the approach somewhat daunting, with its focus on thermodynamics, chemical structures and metabolic pathways. Many students find the subject difficult, when it should not be so. The aim of this book is to introduce the student of sports science or exercise physiology to the biochemical processes that underpin exercise performance and the adaptations that occur with training. The focus is on skeletal muscle metabolism and the provision of energy for working muscles. We have tried in this book to introduce the principles of exercise biochemistry in a context that is immediately relevant to the student of sports science. This has meant abandoning the traditional approach of working through the main classes of biomolecules and the major metabolic pathways. Instead, we have tackled the subject by considering the biochemical processes involved in energy provision for different sports events and the way in which limitations in the energy supply can cause fatigue and thus limit performance. Recovery from exercise is important for athletes who train and compete with only a limited rest period, and the biochemical processes that influence recovery and restoration of performance capacity are also addressed in this book. The biochemical processes that fuel the different activities that contribute to sport are the focus of this book, together with the changes that occur with training and the role of diet in providing the necessary fuels. Sporting talent is a rare gift inherited by the elite athlete from his or her parents, and a brief description of the basis of heredity is included. Online Resource Centre: Will provide multiple choice questions for each chapter and illustrations from the book will be available to download from the Online Resource Centre at www.oup.com/uk/booksites/biosciences/

Book Description
Over the past 15 years, this volume has become widely recognized as the best on its subject, providing the liveliest and most lucid available account of neurotransmitters and their relation to drug action. The fifth edition features two new chapters on topics of current interest: molecular
neurobiology and neuromodulation. In addition, all other chapters have been updated. It is a useful book for a wide variety of students and professionals, including neuroscientists, clinical neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, biochemists and pharmacologists.
Customer Reviews:
Neuropharmacology.......2000-11-26
This reference is easy to read. As well, unlike most pharmacology texts, this one does not concentrate on drugs, but rather on the underlying physiology. There is an introduction to neurons, synapses and action potentials. There is an introduction to modern molecular methods. It is interesting to note that in describing molecular cloning methods, the work of J. G. Sutcliffe, R.J. Milner, and F.E. Bloom is reported whereby a cDNA library was prepared from mRNAs from whole rat brain, then it was seen what individual cDNAs hybridized with the mRNAs from rat liver and kidney. Approximately 30,000 of the brain's 50,000 mRNAs were not detected in the liver or kidney, showing that much of the rat's DNA is for neuronal purposes. In the introduction to receptors, it is noted that there about a thousand known receptors to neurotransmitters, hormones and odorants. The introduction to neuromodulators includes the neuronal effects of nitric oxide (thought to be involved in both long-term potentiation LTP and long-term depression LTD; nitric oxide synthase inhibitors will block NMDA receptor activation). The chapter on amino acid neurotransmitters includes excitatory glutamate and aspartate, and inhibitory GABA, glycine, alanine, cystathionine and serine. There are chapters on cholinergic (acetylcholine) and catecholaminergic (norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine) neurotransmitters. Serotonin and histamine neurotransmitters are considered in detail in the next chapter. There is an introduction to neuroactive peptides, noting that they must be synthesized on ribosomes, then at the smooth endoplasmic reticulum they are put into vesicles in a prohormonal form, and only then transported to the nerve terminals. The book concludes with introductions to the cellular mechanisms involved in learning, and the involvement of neurotransmitters in neurological and psychiatric illnesses.
Excellent introductory glimpse of neuropharmacology.......1998-10-23
This book is an excellent introductory text, suitable for undergraduates or "outsiders", outlining the basic principles of neuropharmacology. Reviews of the major concepts involved in neurotransmission are included in the first half of the book, such as cellular and molecular (read DNA) biological basics as well as descriptions of amino acid based neurotransmission. The second half of the book is organized with each chapter devoted to a single molecule. My major criticism is that although the title is "The BIOCHEMICAL Basis of Neuropharmacology", the chemistry in the text is rather simple and incomplete, and the lack of quantitative discussion of pharmacokinetics is a major disappointment. All beginning students of neuropharmacology should purchase this book - in paperback it is truly a bargain. END

Book Description
Since the subject of high dilution effects is still a subject for debate, this volume provides evidence in support of effects from control clinical studies, clinical records from veteran physicians, controlled experiments on animals and plants, and in vitro tests without any organisms (Chapter II). An overview of the methods for preparing drugs at ultra high dilution is also provided as well as the basic principles of homeopathy, which has been alleviating human suffering through the use of these drugs for several hundred years (Chapter I). Chapter III provides physical basis of high dilutions as evidence from the NMR, IR, UV and fluorescence spectra of those drugs. Since water is used as the diluents media, the structure and dynamics of water polymers in relation to high dilution are discussed in order to facilitate easy comprehension of this physical aspect, the basic principles of spectroscopy are also described. Chapter IV focuses on the mechanism of action of potentized drugs in the living system, discussing the structure of the cell, the plasma membrane, the integral proteins on the membrane, the interaction between these proteins and high dilutions and the manifestations of the therapeutic effects of high dilutions. Some aspects, peculiar to homeopathy, such as the chief miasm psora, and the literalities and time modalities of symptoms and drug action are interpreted from a scientific perspective. Chapter IV ends with a brief discussion on water structures and the origin of life to show the natural evolution of high dilution effects. The book not only helps in understanding the physical basis of high dilutions and their mechanism of action in organisms but provides many new avenues of investigation into this interdisciplinary field of science.

Fishing New England : A Cape Cod Shore Guide
ASIN: 088150517X |
Book Description
Where and how to fly fish within two or three hours of downtown Boston.
Terry Tessein, a veteran of a lifetime of fishing the New England coastline, shares those years of experience in the first detailed guidebook to the multitude of fly fishing possibilities within easy reach of downtown Boston. From the shores of Rhode Island to the coastline of southern Maine, Tessein will guide the reader on where to go, when to go to find particular species, and what flies and tactics to use at each venue.
Fly Fishing Boston covers both well known areas like the Joppa Flats of Newburyport, as well as the relatively unknown and underfished areas along this stretch. In addition, Tessein explains such important coastal fishing information as tides and how they affect the movement of fish. Finally, Fly Fishing Boston is detailed enough to provide even regional fly patterns unique to specific zones. It will be a book to both read in the off-season and to pack in the tackle bag when heading out for a day of fishing. 30 black and white photographs, 6 maps, index.
Well-published author with impressive fishing credentials
The only book on the subject
Detailed where-to and how-to information (not just another general book on fishing the coast)

Fly Fishing in Saltwater
ASIN: 0881506656 |
Book Description
A complete guide to fly fishing and visiting the hundreds of miles of bayous, coastlines, and the Mississippi River Delta.
Great fishing in great settings with great people and great food, too! Where else can you catch tarpon, eat authentic jambalaya, and dance to zydeco, all in one day? This is the first, and definitive, guide to saltwater fly fishing in Louisiana-inshore, coastal, and offshore. This where-to, how-to guide's coverage begins on the western edge of Cajun Country, in the Lake Charles region, and extends east to the Mississippi River Delta. Louisiana harbors an amazing range of fish: redfish, specks, flounder, tripletail, cobia, tarpon, crevalle jacks, and Spanish mackerel, even largemouth bass, and the author cues you in to what gear to bring, from rod to fly, and provides essential information on local guides; marinas; sporting goods; outfitters; suggestions for sightseeing on your fishing down time; accommodations, from motels to plantation beds; and venues for authentic regional "good eating" and music.
Many of Louisiana's year-round saltwater opportunities, both offshore and inshore, were developed in the past 10 years. In that time, there's been a growth of fly fishing in the state, and catch-and-release has replaced the ice-chest as a measure of fishing success. Whether you're sight-casting, blind-casting, surfcasting, or casting from your "mud-boat," here's your chance to hook into your biggest fish ever.
Conventioneers and revelers alike in the Big Easypack your rod for your next trip, and get out and fish! 40 black & white photos, 8 maps, index.

Fish Florida Saltwater: Better Than Luck--The Foolproof Guide to Florida Saltwater Fishing
ASIN: 0941072258 |
Customer Reviews:
The book is way too general, it offers no real fishing help.......1998-10-15
This book is far too general for any fisherman who knows what he is doing. It discusses the different saltwater fish of florida, but tells very little about how to catch them. It contains fishing facts, laws, regulations, pictures, and baits of choice, but gives very little or no info on specifics on different fish such as what hook size, line#, techniques, or other essential pieces of information found in most other fishing books. This book was very unhelpful to me, and would only be useful to a first-time angler.
"Florida Fishing" is a work of art!.......1998-07-28
If one were to distill the essence of Florida West Coast fishing in a well written, well organized collection of information, photos and diagrams, the results would be Allen Applegarth's "Florida Fishing."
Fun and easy to read, Applegarth's book can greatly assist any angler -- from novice to expert -- in their pursuit of the many fascinating Florida Suncoast species.
Allen Applegarth's "Florida Fishing," is a book that I will always enthusiastically recommended.
Capt. Mel Berman
Everything you could possibly need to know about Fl fishing........1998-07-07
There are so many opportunities for fishing in Florida, and so many different types of fish, bait, tackle, and techniques (not to mention laws) that it can be overwhelming for both the novice and experienced fisherperson. "Florida Fishing: Florida's Complete Saltwater Fishing Guide" gives the information necessary to have a wonderful experience even the first time out. It provides comprehensive information on fish species, their value (good to eat or throw 'em back", as well as how to find the fish in the first place and what to do when you finally do! Answers to questions that always crop up (like is it legal to fish this species this time of year, when do I need a license, how do I filet this thing anyway and then how do I cook it?) are covered clearly and in a logical format. The book itself is handy to carry in the tackle box in order to identify your catch, and its easy reading style makes it ideal for fishing enthusiasts of all ages. This book is a MUST for the Florida fishing enthusiast.

This newest book is no exception. North American Fishing is a beautiful book that will help anglers make it through the winter months by dreaming of the places they can go, whether it's Canada, Mexico, or anywhere in the U.S.
Ken Schultz = Fishing Expert!.......2001-10-13
My husband and I are sad that the regular fishing season is over here in the great lakes, but we are looking forward to ice fishing! This book has brought us to new places here in the midwest in search of some different catch. My husband likes to read, and I like to look at the pictures -- they make me feel like I am out on the water with those folks! We were so happy when Ken Schultz came out with this book, we put it right on the coffee table with the Encyclopedia he put together as well. Thanks for some great pointers Ken! Keep on writing :)
This is a must to add to your collection of books.......2001-10-13
Fishing season may have ended up North but with this book, we can make it through the winter months. The photography is great
and it makes us feel like we are out there on the water, casting for the elusive big one! Ken Schultz seems to have landed another
winner with North American Fishing! We didn't think he could write another word after having written that encyclopedia of his, but this book is a real beauty.
Another Winner!.......2001-09-26
This is another great coffee table book packed with lots of useful info and advice for all levels of anglers. North American Fishing covers a lot of ground, including species, lures, accessories, locations, knot tying and more. The photos are awesome. I've already loaned my copy out a few times. Get a jump on holiday shopping with another winner by Schultz. The anglers in your life will be thrilled!
