Book Description
In 17 contributions by leading research groups, this first comprehensive handbook in the field covers the interactions between proteins and lipids that make the fabric of biological membranes from every angle. It examines the relevant hermodynamic and structural issues from a basic science perspective, and goes on to discuss biochemical and cell biological processes. The book covers physical principles as well as mechanisms of membrane fusion and fission. Additionally, chapters on bilayer structure and protein-lipid interactions as well as on how proteins shape lipids and vice versa, membrane penetration by toxins, protein sorting, and allosteric regulation of signal transduction across membranes make this a valuable information source for researchers in academia and industry.

Protein-Lipid Interactions: From Membrane Domains to Cellular Networks
ASIN: 3540284001 |
Book Description
Biological membranes have long been identified as key elements in a wide variety of cellular processes including cell defense communication, photosynthesis, signal transduction, and motility; thus they emerge as primary targets in both basic and applied research. This book brings together in a single volume the most recent views of experts in the area of proteinâlipid interactions, providing an overview of the advances that have been achieved in the field in recent years, from very basic aspects to specialized technological applications. Topics include the application of X-ray and neutron diffraction, infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy, and high-resolution NMR to the understanding of the specific interactions between lipids and proteins within biological membranes, their structural relationships, and the implications for the biological functions that they mediate. Also covered in this volume are the insertion of proteins and peptides into the membrane and the concomitant formation of definite lipid domains within the membrane.

Book Description
Protein-lipid interactions as a field of study is now a mature area, and this volume of New Comprehensive Biochemistry has been published with two objectives in mind. Firstly, to look to the future, and try to envisage how the subject may develop in the near to medium future. Secondly, to present contrasting or complementary views on the same system. For example, the acetylcholine receptor is discussed from a predominantly structural aspect by Barrantes, and from the kinetic standpoint by Rankin, et al.
The volume not only gives an update on specific aspects of the field, but also shows the way in which the phenomenon of protein-lipid interactions is now seemingly infiltrating many areas of biomembrane research, from recombinant DNA studies, protein insertion and assembly and reconstitution considerations to structural studies of membrane proteins.

The real-world guide for divers who want to enjoy their sport to the fullest
More than half of the 1.5 million people who achieve scuba certification each year are stymied in their pursuit of the sport because they lack time and money to enjoy the exotic diving experiences they've read about, and don't want to be confined to group dives. The Certified Diver's Handbook is the only guide to help them create their own diving adventures on any budget, on any schedule, in waters local or distant, and without the restrictions of group demands. Thirty-year diving veteran and photojournalist Clay Coleman provides the insider's tips and how-to advice divers need to equip, plan, and execute their own diving expeditions. Divers will learn how to:
- Buy or rent the best SCUBA equipment at the best prices
- Plan dives to maximize enjoyment and safety
- Find great diving sites close to home
- Master underwater rescue procedures and shore- and night-diving techniques
- Explore wrecks, reefs, and underwater caves

very upset.......2007-05-15
the idiots who put this book together placed a segment of 35 pages in upside down and backwards.... who lets that kind of mistake pass thru quality control. there was no info on my invoice like a number to call or a place to email to complain and return the book. This book was under the description as "NEW." Very upset with Amazon lately.
Great review book for scuba diving basics........2007-05-13
The Certified Diver's Handbook is a wonderful reivew book for all divers, new and old school. This book provides a great reference for new divers to continue improving their diving habits. It's also a good review book for divers who do not have the opportunity to dive on a regular basis.
The cerified divers handbook.......2007-04-20
This is a fantastic book. It covers just about every thing and is easy to understand. He even attempts a little humor. Well worth the price!!!!
A bookshelf must for all divers........2007-01-21
If you only have one book on diving in your bookshelf the "Certified Diver's Handbook" must be a top contender.
One of the most informative handbooks I have ever read. I no way does Clay Coleman try to overwhelm with a "I know it all" attitude. He gives sound solid advice based on experience and analysis of many years diving.
Covers almost every aspect of recreational diving in an easy to read and easy to remember layout. A book for divers that have 5 to 500 dives in their logbooks.
Simply excellent!
great review and guide book.......2006-03-03
Having not been diving in 1.5 years, I wanted to review some things before getting back in the water, so I bought this book. I thought this book was great. The author talked about his experiences, some techniques he has found useful, and procedures/ways to make things easier. Seems to cover everything, from multiple chapters on equipment to shore vs boat diving, how to deal with problems etc, etc. Very easy to read and understand how to apply what you read.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic reference on the subject.......2007-02-11
Books of this type are relatively rare (Jay Dix's Asphixia and Drowning book being one of them.. and a far inferior work at that), but after reading and owning this one for many years I can safely say that the author got it right with this one. The spiral bound book make for easy field reference and the information contained inside is invaluable for the investigator.
Everything it seems is covered; from infestation and destruction by postmortem scavengers, to court testimony, body recovery, report writing, and much much more. The full color photos and the haunting description of what happens to a drowning victim in the first chapter are alone WELL worth the price of admission.
This is an invaluable reference for law enforcement, but also for writers, public safety workers (fire and rescue), divers, and anyone else intrigued, interested, or working in a relevant field of the subject matter. Highly recommended.
Best ref. for upcoming and experinced water rescue personel.......1998-09-21
I have read this book from recomendations from fellow dive rescue personnel as a fledgling dive rescue tech and got a real eyeopener as to the job I had just volunteered for. I still read this book often and have yet to put it down without learning something about the "hobby" of rescue work or about how I think about missions and myself while on missions.
Book Description
A full-color introduction to scuba diving.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginners.......1998-07-01
I was someone thinking about taking up scuba diving and I wanted to find a book that would give me some basic information. This book fit the bill perfectly. I found it to be well written and attractively laid out. However, If your already a certified diver, this book won't tell you anything you don't already know. It could be gifted to friends your trying to convince to take up diving.
Book Description
The only book to cover the entire compulsory national syllabus for the Examination in Commercial Diving, this manual is written by divers with the ability to make a complex subject intelligible to both working divers and trainees. Discusses all of the theoretical and practical aspects of the trade, including underwater skills, use of hand and hydraulic tools, arc welding, cutting, explosives, and working with concrete.

Commercial Diver Training Manual Review.......2001-02-19
I bought this "book" (Actually came in loose leaf form in a 3 ring binder) to study before entering commercial diver training. Seems to be the actual text used by my school. Found it very, very helpful, except, reader, be VERY, VERY CAREFUL you MAKE SURE all chapters are there before chucking the packaging and invoice (as I did), as chapters 13-15 were missing from my book. Don't know if this is an ongoing problem with all the books, or if the book gnomes were just playing an evil joke on me that day. Oh well. Otherwise, was very happy and satisfied with content. As appropriate for classroom use ( for which it obviously was originally designed), as for self-study. Has useful end of ch. exercises (with answers). Covers the commercial diving gamut from diving physics to medicine to commercial specializations, such as welding, non-destructive testing, and salvage. Includes helpful anecdotal info on what work offshore (living conditions) is really like. Overall a great book!
Book Description
Shipwreck Diving is a complete how to book about the sport of wreck diving. This book is packed with information and heavily illustrated with over 80 sensational color photographs. Daniel Berg, a noted wreck diver, instructor and author of ten shipwrecks related books, describes all the basics of wreck diving. Topics include everything from equipment modifications, communication, and wreck penetration to artifact preservation. Dan also tells how to navigate on a wreck and be able to return to the anchor line after the dive. Why some divers find more artifacts and explains how to catch lobsters. Shipwreck Diving also covers such diverse topics as shipwreck research, photography, spear fishing and how to use an underwater metal detector. This exciting book tells all the tricks of the trade that untill now have only been learned through years of experience. Shipwreck divers of all caliber will find Shipwreck Diving informative, rewarding and entertaining.
Customer Reviews:
Beware the complexities of Wreck Diving!.......2007-09-19
In recent weeks I have become most concerned about 2 books by Capt. Dan Berg because the content simply does not match their titles.
This is my review of the second of those books and I repeat; I have been an active diver for well over 30 years and am regarded as something of a shipwreck authority within the UK. In short, I study and then write about shipwrecks for a living. I do not, however, claim to know anything about any shipwreck - anywhere in the world, which I have not studied in great detail. Sadly, the modern shipwreck diver is being openly ripped off by so-called authors who get into print without checking every single fact before so doing.
That said, the diver can still enjoy a great shipwreck even if the guidebook does have the tonnage, names, year lost and other details recorded incorrectly. What cannot be allowed to pass without comment is for a book to describe itself - in it's own title, as being "A Complete Diver's Handbook to Mastering the Skills of Wreck Diving," when it is not.
My big fear is that those who are new to wreck diving will finish this book believing there's simply nothing to it - because this book suggests there is nothing to be learned. It does not even begin to cover the complexities involved with wreck diving.
Wreck diving is an incredible aspect of scuba diving. It is exciting, enthralling, compelling. It can also be very, very dangerous. This is especially so when the diver is deep within the wreck and cannot simply "surface" because he (or she) has encountered a problem. But every diver who ever wanted to see a ship's engine room must go deep inside - because that is where they are found.
Clearly this so-called author would be better employed on the beach cleaning whatever artefacts have been retrieved by those who know about their wreck diving. Truth is, the content is so far removed from the title of this book - I can only suggest any disappointed reader asks for a refund.

Good Book.......2004-01-25
This was an informative book that I will probably consult again when it comes to preserving artifacts. I expected more on the subject of how to safely wreck dive but instead found more on the subject of what to expect from wreckdiving. I still found the text readable and will use it to select gear and preserve artifacts but would not recommend it as a guide to wreckdiving. Good book which contains valuable information, just not the info I was looking for.
Should be titled "Treasure hunting", not wreck diving.......2002-08-16
I was very disappointed with this book. Most of it deals with how to strip and preserve wreck artifacts, rather than how to safely dive wrecks. If stripping portholes from wrecks is your bag, this is the book for you.
"Complete" and "Mastering"??? Nope........2001-12-22
This book is a long way from what its title leads you to believe. Sure its a great book for new divers but I've been diving for ~15 years in a recreational capacity and spent lots of the time diving wrecks all over. I've recently wanted to learn more technical diving and real penetration skills. I thought this book would describe "in detail" the gear needed and the proper configuration. Its an overview book to be sure and was written in 1991 so the material is definately dated when it comes to equipment. If your new to wreck diving.. good book. If you looking for preparation prior to a technical wreck class.... save your money.
Good for everyone who wants to know more about wreckdiving.......2001-05-24
A Good book, details, helpful in gear selection and configuration, covers (like others) from dive planning to getting out of the water, good hints and tips, it's in my shelf.
