Book Description
This is a timely review of the mechanisms underlying the presynaptic control of synaptic transmission and the role they play in sensory and motor behavior. Early chapters offer a detailed account of the anatomy, biophysics, and physiology of synaptic transmission at the peripheral and central synapses, focusing on the presynaptic control of transmitter release. Later chapters explore the organization of neural pathways leading to the presynaptic inhibition of transmitter release in segmental reflex pathways. A final section provides examples of the operation of presynaptic control mechanisms during specific sensory and motor functions in mammals, including humans. Integrating synaptic transmission and CNS functions at the systems level, this volume will be of particular interest to researchers studying both areas.

Book Description
A remarkable spectrum of novel immunoreceptors sharing related immunoglobulin-like domains and signaling potential has been identified in recent years. These receptors have attracted widespread interest because they resemble the TCR, BCR, and FcR complexes in their ability to serve as activating or inhibitory receptors on the cells that bear them. Moreover, they are well positioned to affect both innate and adaptive immunity. The full range of ligands for these new receptor families is still not known, and understanding of their physiological roles is far from complete. This volume is the first attempt to summarize and highlight all known aspects of immunoglobulin-like receptors, providing a topical overview of the roles and characteristic features of the immunoglobulin-like receptors and related molecules in the immune system. Researchers in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, clinical medicine, and pharmacology will find this book invaluable.

Book Description
Curtis Machida and a panel of expert investigators present a comprehensive collection of modern molecular methods for analyzing adrenergic receptors and corresponding second messenger systems. These proven and readily reproducible techniques utilize genetic, RNA, protein expression, transactivator, and second messenger methodologies, as well as immunocytochemical, electrophysiological, transgenic, and in situ hybridization approaches. Each of the experts writing here details the use of their chosen method in examining the adrenergic receptor system, using aspects of the genetic flow of information as a guide: DNA ' RNA ' transactivator ' protein expression ' second messenger analyses ' cellular analyses ' transgenic whole animal approaches. Comprehensive and rich in practical detail, Adrenergic Receptor Protocols provides the first collection of readily reproducible methods for the study of these important regulators of CNS-mediated behavior and neural functions.
Book Description
This inaugural volume of the Fidia Research Foundation Symposium Series features contributions by leading international experts in the field of amino acid neurotransmitters--particularly the transmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate, two of the most common in the mammalian nervous system. The contributors present current research on the mechanisms and effects of the allosteric modulation of the receptors for these amino acids, i.e., the interactions of different ligand molecules with distinct sites within the receptor complexes resulting in the various actions of each transmitter. Topics covered include genetic cloning of one of the subtypes of the GABA receptor; the interaction of the benzodiazepines with GABA receptors; endogenous modulators for GABA receptor subtypes; a potential mechanism of transduction for GABA receptors; and the role of gangliosides and phencyclidine analogues in limiting glutamate neurotoxicity.

Customer Reviews:
More Disney Hype.......2007-03-25
Birnbaum seems to work as an agent for Disney, giving you fluff and hype for your money. This book seems to be little more than a brief encapsulation of the Disney World resort and park attractions, without the critical information, the good as well as the not so good, you really need in order to make intelligent choices about how and where you're going to spend your money on your next Disney vacation. Pretty pictures, though. A better choice for your money would be the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger.
Nice tool for Disney .......2007-03-21
This was a great book to help plan our disney vacation. Unless you are going for 2 weeks you really need to map out your days and this book was a great guide to show what was good for toddlers, teens, couples, etc.
A MUST for new Disney-goers.......2007-01-17
This book was incredibly helpful. I'd never been to DW, and the book saved us from common trip planning mistakes. It is very informative, easy to read, and I HIGHLY recommend it. It really lets you know what to expect and helps with planning your trip well. Take the book with you - you will refer to it often.
Great Disney Book.......2007-01-16
I have been able to visit Disney World more than three times in the past two years and have used this book before and during each visit. It is a great guide to the parks and resorts and just about all Disney has to offer. When it is time I will definitely be updating to the new version.
You need this if you want to enjoy Disney World.......2007-01-06
An absolute necessity for any Disney World excursion. There are several gotchas and hot tips that are a must know to fully enjoy yourselves in the world of mouse.
Customer Reviews:
Refer to this book everytime we go to Disney.......2007-07-10
My six-year-old daughter really enjoys reading this book. We've been to Disney twice since buying this book and we've used this book to prepare our itinerary each time. My daughter particularly likes the fact that it gives you the "heads-up" on which rides are "scary," "dark," "rough," etc. It's always good to know what to expect before you go.
And, after our vacation, we like to read the book and relive our trip through the pages of this book. It helps to refresh our memory and keep the excitement alive.
Disney Bound Kid.......2007-01-22
The book is great. Although it will be a little out of date when we take our trip Jan 2008), it has been really helpful. My daughter loves to read parts of it before bed, especially the kids reviews. It has given her more of an idea of what she would like to do, and also made her feel a little better about the "big rides." There are some good tips for kids, an autograph section at the back, and the book has space to mark when you've gone on the ride listed. We haven't been to Disney yet, but I know this book will go with my daughter when we do. Thanks!
Fantastic Resource.......2007-01-08
We took this book with us to Disney World. I gave it to my six-year-old son to read in the car. He read it cover to cover, and LOVED it. My husband and I also used it a lot to plan our days in the parks. It is excellent -- breaks everything down by park and by type of ride/attraction. One of the most valuable things was a "must see" a "should see" and a "see if you have time" list for each park. For a newbie at Disney World, this categorization was extremely helpful.
Great for Kids!.......2006-08-29
When my husband and I were considering going to WDW for our anniversary, we happened to visit a Disney store in a mall. The manager gushed about WDW (doesn't everybody, really?) and showed us the Birnbaum's 2006 guide for kids. I thought we'd buy it, just to get an idea of what was in the parks and such.
I really enjoyed looking at, but my 7 year old was VERY enthused! Needless to say, we booked our trip later that evening!
This particular guide features 160 glossy pages describing all the attractions and shows in the four WDW parks. Peppered throughout the book are mini-reviews and tips by kids. There is also a rating system that shows if a ride is scary, loud, rough, wet, or dark (or all of the above!).
However, I didn't find the guide accurate in terms of my own son. (He's 7 and wanted to experience EVERYTHING--even Expedition Everest, Tower of Terror, and Space Mountain!) But at least the guide tells you of those elements in case a child is skittish about darkness and such. Still, some of the shows were considered "dark" and "scary" (for example, The Voyage of the Little Mermaid), when I felt they were whimsical and very non-threatening. The book gives Soarin' a mere "dark" rating, but I'm tellin' ya, if you're scared of heights, it can be SCARY. I was shaking so bad when I got off Soarin', I couldn't unbuckle the seatbelt! (My husband had to get me out.) It was thrilling and unique, but I'd think some kids would be terrified!
Kids will enjoy pouring over the colorful illustrations and photographs in anticipation for the big trip. There's even mazes, quizzes, and other games all throughout the 2006 Birnbaum guides. There's lots of trivia in the book, too, as well as Hidden Mickey Alerts. (I wish I would have written some down to look for them on the trip! Maybe next time.)
Great guide and preparation for trip.......2006-04-24
This refers to the 2005 edition. - I wanted something to help prepare my 3 year old for a trip to Disney. This book was great because it gave her pictures of the major attrctions. She was so excited at the park when she recognized each one. It also helped us pick which rides were best for her ahead of time. One of my favorite parts is how it lists where to find kid favorite foods in each theme park. We also enjoyed the section for autographs and scrapbook/souvenirs in the back. It is worn out from being used so much...and looked at to remember our vacation. This book filled the roles of a guide for me and a book that was for my little girl to look at and enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
Do not go without this book.......2007-01-16
This is a wonderful book you will use over and over in order to review and find great places to eat in Disney World. Do no go without this book.
Never Used It.......2006-08-29
My family and I just got back from WDW a few weeks ago, and not ONCE did we use the Dining Guide. (I didn't even look at it much when at home!)
The information is terribly redundant if you already have the Birnbaum Official WDW Guide. (I bought the Dining Guide over the internet, so I didn't know what to expect.)
However, it does list the restaurants (counter service or sit down) from each park, as well as which meals are served (Breakfast, Lunch Dinner), and affordability. For example, $ equals under $10, $$ means $10-$20, $$$ means $$21-$45, and $$$$ indicates $46 and up.
Lounges and Downtown Disney hotel restaurants are also included, as are restaurants in Celebration, Florida. The back of the book groups the restaurant by food (e.g. BBQ, bakery, buffets, burgers, etc.), which is a nice touch.
Several recipes are included in the back of the Dining Guide, as well.
If you'd like a Dining only guide to WDW, then this is a good one. But if you already have a Birnbaum guide, you want find a whole lot new here.
Lacking information.......2006-08-25
I am a Disneyphile. Everything to know about Walt Disney World, I know. I looked at this book for friends visiting from Europe, but decided to pass on it for two reasons. First, most of the information is available in the full Birnbaum guides. Second, and most important, was the lack of information regarding times. It is not enough to say B,L,D for service times. Many people do not eat meals at "average times" when visiting theme parks because they hope to catch a break on lines for rides by waiting. Unfortunately, this book doesn't give any indication of when the eateries begin and end meal service. That type of information is truly lacking and very easy to include. For that reason, I can't give this more than 3 stars.
Disappointing.......2006-07-16
I think the book was nice. It was small, and could be carried around. Although, when I bought it I had already purchased the Birnbaum's Walt Disney World book. This book and the Dining Chapter in the Birnbaum's WDW Book have the exact same descriptions. The Disney World Guide even has color photos of the restaurants, the dining guide does not. I feel like it was a waste of money. The only thing exclusive to the Dining book was that there is a recipe chapter. If you already have the regular birnbaum's guide, You probably shouldn't buy this. If you don't have either books, I think it would be worth a few more dollars if you bought the regular Birnbaum's guide. It has everything from attractions, to hotels and resorts, and of course a dining chapter. But if you want just a dining book this would be a good option.
Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Dining Guide 2006.......2006-06-29
Great book to purchase. Outlines all of the resturants. A most have if planning a trip to Disney.
Customer Reviews:
Birnbaum's Disney World w/o Kids.......2007-01-11
The book was disappointing. Nothing like the Birnbaum book I bought and used several years ago. Poor maps, absent really useful information. I am not likely to buy another Birnbaum book.
Not so great anymore.......2006-04-10
As a 22-year devotee to Walt Disney World and its environs, I used to depend on Birnbaum's guides to give me the inside scoop and all the correct information without overwhelming with text and photos. It seems since Mr. Birnbaum's death, however, that the book is now poorly edited, full of grammatical errors and just plain unenjoyable to read. Though it saddens me to say so, I'll just depend on the WDW website instead.
