Book Description

The fourth edition of this highly successful text has been extensively revised and restructured to take account of the many recent advances in the field. The classic observations of recent years can now be interpreted with the powerful new techniques of molecular biology. Consequently, there is much new material throughout the book, including many new illustrations and extensive references to recent work. The text's essential philosophy remains the same, however: it clearly explains fundamental concepts, and examines key experiments in detail. This thorough and clearly written textbook will be valuable for students of physiology, neuroscience, cell biology and biophysics.

5 out of 5 stars Cellular Neurophysiology and Electrophysiology.......2005-04-17

David Aidley's 4th edition text is superb for the graduate student in experimental cellular neurophysiology. This text does not cover neuroanatomy or systems neurophysiology. That is probably a weakness for those students hoping to have a comprehensive review book such as Principles of Neural Science by Kandel & Schwartz. Strengths of the book include discussion of Hodgkin-Huxley equations, ion channel kinetics equations, entropy equations, pearls of wisdom related to different aquatic species, etc. LTP and LTD are covered well. Receptor physiology is discussed better in this book than any other with the exception of Handbook of Physiology Receptors Springer by Lowenstein. Cortical neurophysiology is weak here. If you had to choose between this book and other cellular neurophysiology books, you cannot go wrong with this one. Cellular Biophysics: Electrical Phenomenon by Weiss and Foundations of Cellular Neurophysiology by Wu & Johnston are two others to look at that are more complex than Aidley's book. It is a shame that David Aidley died in 2001 so that a 5th edition of this outstanding textbook will not be available.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2002-02-23

So, You're in grad school or a major in Neurobiology and you are looking to see if the book is worth the money??

This book does not give core facts in a easy to regurgitate format.Don't read this a day before your exam.

What the book gives you and does better than any other neurobiology book I know about (yes, that's a tall claim, but Im comfortable making it) is a clear and concise walk through the relevant ideas and experiments that went into building a simple 'taken for granted' concept like say the synaptic vesicles.

This book more than any other made me see the facts I read in tons of other books through the eye of an experimentalist and I had a clear appreciation of the thought that went towards designing an experiment and interpreting the result.I'm not sure if this would be the best book to read for an introduction to Neurobiology but if you have some background this is a book you would like to come back to again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and hard to follow........2000-10-31

I am a first year graduate student in Neurobiology, and our class was assigned Aidley as our text for Neurophysiology. In short: this class has now become much more difficult because of Aidley's hard to follow style. He gives numerous details of experiments, but wholly fails to connect them to each other or to the reader. In addition, the numerous charts and graphs lend little support to the text since most often they are poorly explained and have little to do with the section in which they are placed. Each chapter follows a logical sequence, but the text within does not, jumping from descriptions of genetics experimental methods straight to physical chemistry. If you want to learn about Neurophysiology, there are many other texts to choose from, most of which the reader would find more interesting and more well written.

4 out of 5 stars Aidley - Interesting and user friendly (mostly).......2000-09-06

As part of my degree I study neuromuscular physiology and this is the recomended text.It has well layed out chapters with each unit taking a major topic in electrophysiology. It starts with the extreme basic but this gives you the instant reminder of all that you've learned and the basis of electrophysiology. The chapters are layed out in the topics generally study at university, though it goes into more detail. The graphs that accompany many of the topics were found very useful for comparison for practical experiments. This text is helpful and detailed, and useful for study.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, attack creationism!.......2006-06-08

"A Reader" wrote, "Good book, but attack on special creation unneccessary". I couldn't disagree more. Putting creationism in its correct place is precisely what good science should do. Part of the job of science is defeating old myths and faith-based means of "explanation" and replacing them with real science. So not only should evolution be taught but creationism should be explicitly mentioned by name and refuted. Science is a process and the best way to show that is to illustrate how it got to where it is today. That means the course of thought leading to today's science must be a part of the scenario. Thus, creationism should be shown wrong and refuted. After all, any astronomy course will show the roots of astronomy in the pre-science ideas that preceded it. Similarly a chemistry course must show how modern chemistry emerged from its precedents such as alchemy.

And that is what this book does. To call for any other approach would clearly be to call for special treatment for creationism. And this would be a giveaway as to the motivations of the person calling for such special treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Indiependent Learning.......2003-01-23

I used this text for a course that I took from Cal Berkeley Extension - online. That is an internet course. I am considering a career change from physical sciences to biotech and need to come up to speed rapidly.

The course covered only the first 2 units (first 17 chapters) so I will only speak to that. This text, with CD ROM (2) and internet learning center is GREAT! Looking at the entire package this is a great way to learn biology. The material covered in those first 17 chapters are exactly what one needs to know - elementary biochem; cell structure; genetics; gene expression; biotech. The illustrations are great and consistent (eg., phosphate groups are always orange-yellow) throughout the text. Actually, I would say that it is about the best illustrated text I have ever seen in my life. The on-line quizes (about 64 questions/chapter) let you know if you have really mastered the material or not. Independent questions at the end of every chapter all have answers in the appendix - so again you can check your understanding. The web site has shockwave art match the parts of the cell to the labels all as part of a package to independently learn biology.

I would say it would be helpful to have a year of college chemistry before plunging into this course - but the chemistry is not too sophisticated. The focus is on essentials - but with understanding. For people considering a switch into biology and want to study independently, I reccomend this book highly. I do not easily give 5 stars - but this book earns it.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but attack on special creation unneccessary.......2002-07-27

I really liked the 6th edition of this text, which I used for both semesters of General Biology. The illustrations were clear and I think Mader had a clear grasp of the concepts of biology. However, as a molecular biology major and as a person who has seen no evidence that macroevolution has occurred, I object to her characterization of creationism as unscientific. Mader is bold enough to actually state in Chapter 1 (in a connecting concepts box)"When faith is involved, a hypothesis cannont be tested in a purely objective way." She neglects to consider the exorbinant amount of faith it takes to believe in macroevolution. This is a theory which in all actuality is untestable. Furthermore, her statement which was quoted above would be considered by many to be "bad science"! She makes no reference to any studies which support her hypothesis. And I don't believe I've ever heard of any. In the fields of genetics and molecular biology, as we come to understand the complexity of living organisms, the theory of evolution just becomes more and more untenable. It's fine if Dr. Mader believes in evolution. That's her choice. But to go out of her way to rip the growing number of scientists who disagree with her was gratuitous and mean-spirited. This caused me to question HER objectivity throughout the rest of the book.

                  Book Description

Distilling the martial art known in the West as kung fu, Robert Smith presents Chinese boxing (ch’uan shu) as an art “that combines the hardness of a wall and the softness of a butterfly’s wings.” His lively, pragmatic account conveys the discipline and insights acquired in ten years of study and travel in Asia. Smith describes his work with t’ai chi master Cheng Man-ch’ing, and connects ch’uan shu with the softer aspects and inner power of that popular practice. Fifty black and white photos illustrate this informative and personal account of the Chinese boxing tradition.

4 out of 5 stars Probably mostly true.......2007-05-15

Chinese boxing lends itself to stories that are, well, perhaps not entirely true. If at all. Mr. Smith himself likes a good apocryphal story but has the good sense to change his name when he really tells some whoppers. In this book, he is very restrained, giving us the benefit of his long experience in 1960's Taiwan while including only the occasional bit that would be better saved for a flying swordman novel. But that's okay; I enjoy those bits too.

                  4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-11

The book is o.k. I guess. It is quite interesting although a bit superficial. The biggest regret is that the author concentrates his studies almost exclusively on internal northern systems, mostly Hsing I, Bagua and Tai Chi. Apart from that, it's quite an entertaining book if you are interested in the subject of Chinese martial arts masters.

                  5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-08-16

The author, a US government employee, arrived in Taiwan when that nation's government was extremely grateful to the US. He was given introductions to many of the leading Chinese martial artists of the time, and took up every one -- adding what they had to teach him to what he had learned earlier in the US and during a posting in Japan. Virtually all of the masters he describes in the book are dead and no longer available for interview. His accounts of what he saw, heard and experienced can never be matched, and Asian principles of loyalty to a single master mean that nobody other than he was able to study as widely from the leading teachers of the day. The more you learn personally about Chinese boxing, the better this book shows itself to be. For those on the first steps of this study, the book's a profound inspiration.

1 out of 5 stars Biased and arrogant!.......2006-06-08

Once I finished reading this book, Robert W Smith made a really terrible impression as both an individual, a writer and a martial artist. He writes and communicates in an arrogant and conceted manner. However his book on Baguazhang was a lot better. This book is a waste of money, though you will find out what one American thinks, if that is what you want. His attitudes about chinese martial arts on Taiwan and on China are biased. He just seems to really dislike China.

Mr. Smiths book has been around for quite sometime now however, with the current popularity of Chinese Boxing in AMerica and much of the mystic that surrounds many of those who teach it. THis book presents in a very clear light just who the traditional CHinese Boxing MAsters really were and just exactly what their views were and are on the study of CHinese Boxing. Smith is impressed by the subjects of his book, and rightly so, however he dosen't become so engrossed with them that he falls prey to the depths of mysticisim. His observations are informative, educational and at times down right funny. This is far from a how to learn Tai Chi book, it is however a very educational read on true Chinese Boxing,
