1 out of 5 stars How could you possibly think this is helpful?.......2007-09-14

I took one look at this supposed solutions manual and knew it would be worthless. The book for accompanying this is pretty bad too, so why should I expect to get a decent solutions manual. This is a broad broad overview of each section and has maybe three actual solutions worked out if you're lucky. I get so sick of these authors doing the least amount of work for people that are really trying to learn this stuff. Unfortunately I will have to find help elsewhere. Also, if you want to review the book review it on the book page not on the solutions manual page.

3 out of 5 stars Non Fiction.......2007-09-03

One of those bloodsucking drain the students dry of cash evil bastich series of textbooks. Some useful information, but probably up to version 27 of its cash gathering exercise by now. Exactly what textbooks should not be, a prime example of a RIP OFF, if there ever was one.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-07-16

This book was a major disappointment. Having taken 15 yrs off between getting my BS and starting grad school, I was looking for detailed examples of how to solve problems to refresh my memory. The solutions in this book skipped several steps and proved to be only marginally helpful, if even that. If you don't clearly understand the real text book, you won't get much help from this "solutions" manual. As in the text, there are not enough examples in this manual either. There is not even an example representing each subset of problems in the back of each chapter. Don't waste your money.

The student manual has been very helpful in getting me started back into the engineering mathmatics. It is nice to have a helper when I get stumped on some of the problems I know should be easy.

I am satisfied with the quality of the book and the time it took for the book to reach me.

    Book Description

Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering, Third Edition is a highly acclaimed undergraduate textbook that teaches all the mathematics for an undergraduate course in any of the physical sciences. As well as lucid descriptions of all the topics and many worked examples, it contains over 800 exercises. New stand-alone chapters give a systematic account of the 'special functions' of physical science, cover an extended range of practical applications of complex variables, and give an introduction to quantum operators. This solutions manual accompanies the third edition of Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering. It contains complete worked solutions to over 400 exercises in the main textbook, the odd-numbered exercises, that are provided with hints and answers. The even-numbered exercises have no hints, answers or worked solutions and are intended for unaided homework problems; full solutions are available to instructors on a password-protected web site, www.cambridge.org/9780521679718.

Good book for people taking a class requiring it the book. It is a little hard to understand why certain problems are done the way they are. Overall a good book to help you solve problems and determine whether you had the right thought process.

It almost seems as if the authors of the book couldn't work their own problems. i have no idea how they choose which problems they do-- they only do the odd-numbered problems, and even not many of those! They don't explain each step, only referring you back to the textbook, which itself is useless and incomprehensible.

      Don't bother.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2004-05-03

Wolfson and Pasachoff's "Physics" is a great book, either for a class (in which case you really don't have much choice of which book you buy) or for self-study. I found the book to be a very good way to learn the basics of calculus-based physics, even without much outside instruction. It is clear and self-contained, with enough examples and problems to work on. It covers a broad range of topic in limited depth, making it great for an independent enthusiast or a student, including not only simple mechanics and electormagnetism, but also introductions to thermodynamics, waves and optics, and moden physics and relativity. Also, there are plenty of examples of real-world applications, showing industrial and everyday uses of the content covered and effectivly relating abstract material to real life. All in all an effective text and an interesting read.

        5 out of 5 stars Recommended Textbook.......2003-05-27

Hey, this book helped me learn physics and get an A+ for the first quarter... but the main thing is what I have learned (not greade, of course) ), and as far as learning goes I found this text to be very helpful. It contains all the most needed equations, lots of examples, the text is easy to read and understand. Even though physics may not be your favourite subject, this book will not add to your suffering. I would recommend the study guide and solutions manual to it if you are the kind of person who does not like to read the chapters but only grasp the most relevant material.

        4 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2000-05-06

I found this book to be a wonderful guide to freshmen physics. I have only the second volume on E&M and modern physics. I particularly like the little things such as the reminder that phenomena like reflection and refraction can be explained using Maxwell's equations. I believe that this gives the student a preview of things to come in later classes. Perhaps there are not as many examples as in Halliday & Resnick, but there are plenty of applications to the real world. It gives just a taste of quantum mechanics but that may be enough for freshmen. The color layout is an optical feast. I like the "Got it" sections which periodically test the reader's physical knowledge at the completion of each concept. I do think that the questions should have an answer key though. All in all a great book!

2 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but not real good either..........1999-12-17

This is a pretty good book for showing the derivation of formulas, but it doesn't spend enough time explaining the concepts. Also, it has good examples for simple problems, but needs examples for the more complex problems. Also the "questions" section at the end does not provide answers, which makes them totally useless as a learning tool.

3 out of 5 stars Good, yet needs more sample problems..........1999-10-07

This textbook, is a good guidline for the beginner in Physics. The diagrams are useful, and is not too wordy. However an abscence of sample problems is the only downfall to this text.

Founded in 1898, FC Barcelona, also know as Barca, is today the world's biggest football club. Its 120,000-seat stadium, Camp Nuo, is one of the great cathedrals of the game, and its museum is the most visited in Spain. This is the story of FC Barcelona and its evolution as a social and political phenomenon.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good History of FC Barcelona.......2007-02-09

I highly recommend this book for Barca fans and for general football fans alike. Not only does Burns write about the great players and personalities of the club, he also places them into a historical context.

This was one of the great surprises of the book. He spends considerable time placing Barca's history into the context of the Spanish Civil War and resulting Franco era. Students of Spanish History would do well to read this book.

Overall, I enjoyed it greatly, and hope to read more of Burns' football books.

I thought this was a well written, well researched book about a topic that means quite a bit to me; mainly football and Barcelona. I love the sport and I love the city. If anyone has an interest in football and history, I would recommend "Barca" to them. (Also, a funny picture of Jose Mourinho when he was assistant manager there in the 90's, during the short time Ronaldo was there). Catalunya is like no place on earth in the way its football is played and coached, followed and loved by the people of the region who live their lives in support of their football club.

          5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read.......2006-11-14

Let me first say that I am very bias. I've been an FCB "soci" since 1981, played in their youth system for a couple of years, and by and large am one of the many fans that buys into the whole "Mes que un Club" mantra.

So understanding that, let me just say that Jimmy Burns has done a fantastic job helping the reader understand how history has shaped the meaning of "Mes que un Club". Part history, part sociology, Burns discusses the club's history, both real and invented, that pushed FCB into being the opposition to Real Madrid.

Keep in mind this is more than a book on the Club. Burns adeptly weaves the Club and the sport with Catalan politics and identity. Always balancing the passions of "Cules" with the machination of the member's of the board, one truly gets a sense of the depth of history and passion behind the Club.

The reader learns some of the details behind some of FCB lore, from the Di Stefano controversy, the Kings Cup match against Real Madrid after the Civil War, to the famous field invasion that erupted into a pro-Catalunya demonstration toward the end of the Franco regime. Some of the myths are debunked, but in all, the Clubs history is given a fair shake.

Keep in mind - On the downside, Jimmy Burns does favor the Catalan club, more times than not. He doesn't approach the topic dispassionately.

As a follow up to A Peaople's Passion, another great read on Spanish football can be found in Phil Ball's excellent book, Morbo. It touches upon the unique history of Spanish football from it's roots in the mines of Huelva, through the use of the sport in identity politics, particularly in the Basque Country and Catalunya.

4 out of 5 stars If you love Barca..........2005-09-10

This book provides a great overview of the history of the club, its stars, the machinations of its ruling junta, and the passion of the cules, all against the backdrop of Catalonia's political struggle for identity and independence within Spain. Burns provides some nice historical details and great anecdotes, but, as is to be expected considering the hundred year focus of the book and the complexity of 20th century Spain, necessarily deals with some of the political history in a less comprehensive manner.

Although it at times extremely well-written, the book could have done with tighter editing (hence, 4 stars). Burns repeats his descriptions of individuals and events in subsequent pages and at time his prose is florid and unfocused. Pretty minor complaints, however. Although not uncritical, Burns clearly appreciates what Barca have achieved. He also questions how the club will adjust, or might be changed, in the new century. Overall, the book is an excellent read, and continually succeeds in portraying the people involved as just that, people with passions and short-comings. At the end, you understand why the club embodies true football, why it inspires such passion, and why it's such an important part of Catalonia. Forca Barca!

          5 out of 5 stars Astonished.......2005-08-27

Reading this book is simple amazing. I bough it because I am a truly FC BARCELONA fan, however this books goes beyond that, it explains very well the relationships between Spanish recent history and soccer, finally I am able to understand the frivolity between this winner team and others, more related to social and political issues than only sports.

Very well documented, fair, balanced and a treasure for anyone who really wants to learn how important soccer is in many countries. Highly recommended. Congra and my appreciation for your work Mr. Burns
