Holistic overview of the basics.......2007-08-08
Great book for covering all the major issues of attacking and defending. If you want to know where your defenders or forwards should position to maximize their position, this is a great book. There are many simple basic diagrams that are uncluttered, showing just the players involved in the play and this is a plus for sharing information with your players!
The book does not cover any drills for achieving these desired results, but I consider it a must read for the coach considering the 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 3-5-2 formations.
Buy with confidence, this book will refresh your positioning and playing coaching skills as well as providing a way to copy handouts for your players from the many diagrams this book provides!
Formation Strategies.......2000-07-02
As stated on the back cover, this book is "aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced coaches" and "examines the principle formations used in modern soccer..." It states these formations clearly (along with diagrams) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is a great resource for the coach who is looking to develop the appropriate offensive and defensive systems. The book does not cover other issues such as team management or practice drills. Look elsewhere for that.

A great instructional book, full of good ideas and useful drills. Graphics and description of how drills are to be conducted is very well laid out. I plan to use this book for developing goal scoring capabilities for our U9 Girls team. I would recommend his book for U9 and older players.
Great drills to work on specific concepts.......2005-11-15
This book offers 150 tactical and skill-specifc drills that any coach will benefit from. The chapters are broken into attacking concepts such as "Attacking the Flanks" and "Changing the Point of Attack" with a great table of contents/drill finder. While the concepts themselves are not discussed in-depth, the exhaustive and clearly-explained volume of drills more than makes up for the limited examination of attacking soccer. Each drill has simple instructions and large, easy-to-read diagrams. The bottom line is that there are lots of drills in this book that will make your team better. Luxbacher is a drill genius, and most of the names in the book are well-recognized in the coaching community.
Youth Soccer Coach.......2004-05-24
This volume has some nice concepts to improve soccer tactics, but is nothing spectacular. A rather light read, containing limited examples of the various general tactics discussed. Many of the drills presented are contained in other books which offer more indepth discussion.

Tired of soccer books that are full of drills to improve a players individual skills but lacking any ideas for game tactics? This book is a good mixture of strategies, tactics and related drills. Each chapter is by a different author that discuss various tactics and then presents several drills to reinforce the tactic. Tactics include "Playing Out of the Defending Third", "Creating Opportunities in the Attacking Third"' "Possession Soccer". Fourteen chapters in all, each with a different theme. A must book for the serious coach of age levels 12 and above.

A very good book with alot of detail on how to build-up attacks from various formations. In my opinion most useful for U12 or older players (11 a side). Good tactical descriptions, explaining why and under what conditions a certain attack makes sense.

Not what was expected.......2005-02-19
Not the strongest of Lucchesi's books - I expected the counter attacking to be a discussion of how to implement explosions from the back up to the front, ala the 80's German national teams that were able to go from defending in front of their nets to producing a shot on net in 6 passes or less. Instead you get a lot of discussion of how different tactical set-ups match up against each other which is really kind of esoteric. Soccer is not a scientific endeavor like American football or basketball. The proper title of this book should have been "Counter-actions" not counter attacking, and while it is an interesting read, all things being equal the info in this book will have little practicality to most coaches, even higher level ones.
