While it's a safe bet that most readers know where babies come from, it's equally likely that they don't know the whole story. Reproductive biologist David Bainbridge fills them in with Making Babies, a witty and intriguing look at an experience so essential that we all go through it at least once. It would be all too easy for the author to get caught up in the intricacies of hormones and anatomy that have evolved from our egg-laying ancestors, but he softens the details with insights and examples from throughout the animal kingdom. Expectant parents might not like being compared to red deer at first, but most will warm to their shared experience. Examining big questions like "Why have sex?" and "How does the fetus change the mother?" is daunting, but Bainbridge guides the reader through the issues with confidence and humility. It's no substitute for a birds-and-bees chat, but Making Babies is perfect for those who want to deepen their understanding of what happens next. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Drawing on past speculation and present knowledge, reproductive biologist David Bainbridge conducts us through the forty weeks of a human pregnancy, from conception to breastfeeding, explaining the complex biology behind human gestation in a clear and unassuming manner.
Making Babies sets the latest findings in pregnancy biology in a challenging evolutionary, historical, and sociological context, proving that when it comes to drama, pregnancy has it all: sibling rivalry, a battle of the sexes, and a crisis of gender identity. Along the way, Bainbridge revisits some of the key puzzles about pregnancy: What's sex got to do with it? How does the fetus hijack its mother's immune system? What is the point, if any, of morning sickness? Just how does a fertilized ovum develop into eight pounds or so of baby, with ten fingers and ten toes? Does the baby or the mother control the onset of labor, and why is it such an ordeal for them both?
Entertaining and informative, Making Babies shows how the study of human pregnancy can help us understand our genesis as individuals and our evolution as a species, and provide insight into who we are and why we behave as we do.

Way Cool.......2007-10-06
This is awesome any mother father or pregnant person should see this if they want to learn more about the growth of babies in the womb. There are lots of pictures, and complex information in this book.
A detailed, scientific look.......2004-01-29
This book's subtitle "The Science of Making Babies" is completely accurate. The author delves into more evolutionary biology than I want or need to know, but it all makes for fascinating, if somewhat slow and clinical, reading. There are a few pictures, but they generally do not add to the ooh and ahh factor of the miracle of pregnancy. For that, I'd recommend "A Child Is Born" by Lennart Nilsson.
An unusually detailed view of pregnancy.......2002-02-21
I've read many pregnancy and birth books, but this one is unique. It goes into the how and why of human reproduction in tremendous detail, starting with why we even bother to reproduce sexually. He examines what happens at a cellular level during conception and details early embryonic development. He examines the role of evolution. He does go into various examples of things that can go wrong, so it might not be the best read for an anxious parent-to-be.
One criticism: I think in his purely scientific view, he misses the mystique and spirituality of producing babies. The last chapter is particularly flawed in this way. He talks about "the tyrannies of conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding" as if these are things we would be better off without. I totally disagree.
Although deeply scientific, he writes clearly. "Making Babies" was an enjoyable, educational read. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get more information on human reproduction than a standard pregnancy book would cover.

Very helpful book.......2007-07-14
I bought this book shortly before my husband and I made the final decision to go ahead with IVF. We went through IVF at one of the Sher Institutes (in IL) and I found Dr. Sher's book to be very helpful in answering some of questions/worries and even after speaking with the nurses & doctors at the clinic, this book was a great quick reference tool for any questions that I had.
I believe that this book would be helpful for anyone considering and/or going through the IVF process, regardless of what clinic you are having the procedure through.
Although the book doesn't give personal accounts of the IVF process, it does provide very helpful and technical information. I found myself referring to this book more than any of the other IVF books that I purchased.
excellent resource for couples wanting info on ivf.......2007-05-27
If you want a clear explanation of the process of ivf this is an excellent resource. It avoids personal stories and provides a comprehensive overview of the range of options for assisted reproduction.
Outdated information.......2005-07-13
I made the mistake of purchasing his older book called The A.R.T. of making babies updated edition. Do not buy unless your doing a research paper. This book was written in 1998 and the information is outdated. Make sure you purchase the 2005 edition. I wish amazon.com would have made this clearer. I did read it anyways and had the book been filled with updated information it could be informative. I found the "Couple's guide to In Vitro Fertilization a much better book. Having recently gone through the procedure it was right on the money and very easy to read and understand.
Good source of information.......2005-06-14
My husband and I recently found out that IVF was probably our only hope at having a biological child. We live in an area where IVF is basically non-existent... as is the information that we've received. I wanted to find out everything I could about the IVF process, expenses, etc. This book was an excellent source of information from fertility testing, to the entire IVF process. It also went into depth on new procedures that can be used along with IVF. VERY inforamtive, and I would recommend to anyone craving knowledge about IVF.
This is the NEW edition of The A.R.T. of Making Babies!.......2005-05-28
I noticed the review from KK "Current IVFer" below and wanted to to say that this is the NEWEST edition of
In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies by Dr Geoffrey Sher (Copyright 2005)
. This book contains NEW information about IVF techniques and technology. KK "Current IVFer", if you received the older version of this book, when you thought that you had ordered this NEW edition, contact the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine, Patient Resource Center at

, I'll bet they'll be happy to replace your copy.

Raw beginners.......2007-03-08
I agree with earlier reviews in most particulars, but it should be added that the book - published in 2003 - is a bit dated, a slight matter which relates to some equipment suggestions. For better or worse, close to a quarter of the book is related to catching fish other than trout and salmon - on flies. Still, for raw beginners, reading this book is a very good way to start.
Fly fishing for true beginners.......2007-01-27
As a person who had never picked up a fly rod in his life, I purchased this book with the hopes that it covered fly fishing at a basic enough level that my appetite would be whetted to learn the sport. I was not disapointed - the book starts at the beginning with the selection of basic equipment, (rods, reels, gear), and progresses logically through fly casting techniques, reading the water, and selection of flies for different types of fish. There is generous use of color photos and diagrams and the chapters are well written and easy to follow. My one criticism is that the section on the selection of clothing, waders, and accessories seems to go a little overboard,(do I really need to go out and purchase a vest with 25 different storage pockets and a floating sleeve to store my flies in?), but that is tempered with the knowledge that as one's skill and passion for the sport evolves, the equipment that will enhance that experience is out there.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a curiosity about fly fishing, and the committment to put what the book teaches into practice.
Practically speaking, all you'll need.......2006-11-08
I'm finally retiring back to the NW after many years. My brother, an expert fly fisherman by any criteria (fishes every trophy stream in the U.S. -- his bad day is
< 25 fish 16" - 20" or none over 20+ inches w/ pictures to prove it), has talked me into fly fishing after 40 years. My professional pilot discipline drives me to a manual to get all basics and techniques deeply ingrained before taking stick or fly rod in hand. I looked at every book on AMAZON before buying this one and a couple others. I immediately fell in love with this book and have been through it several times. I was impressed with Chris Hansen's mastery of the subject and his ability to communicate its full range from thinking about fly fishing to cleaning your gear after an outing. I asked my brother (other fisherman literally stop fishing to watch him catch fish) to critique it to see if I'd been fooled. He thought the content was as well written and comprehensive as I did. He said it was all anyone needed to become a happy, successful fly fisherman (assuming they fish where the fish are!) to the intermediate level. We both considered the illustrations and pictures superb. It's perfect for me . . . I suspect for you too. Thanks to this book, I'm doing well on my local park lake and looking forward to my first real fishing in Montana next year. I'm ready with the right gear and basics learned. I'm confident and highly motivated . . . now show me the fish. I extend my special thanks to Chris Hansen. Buy this book and you won't be disappointed.
Excellent starter book.......2006-08-30
I purchased this book right after I started fly fishing, and found it to be a gentle yet surprisingly complete "starter pack" for somebody wanting an introduction to the sport. Basics of almost all aspects of the sport are covered, along with important terminology and concepts. I would *highly* recommend this to a person considering getting involved with this wonderful and relaxing pastime.
Just What I Needed.......2006-01-07
I checked this book out of our public library and now I am buying it. The photography is sharp and clear worthy of a coffee table book. The information is complete without being to wordy. This book is a great start to fly fishing and I know my copy will be well used as I glean the information from it over and over again.

A Great Book for your Fifth Fly!.......2007-02-08
Fly Tying for Beginners by Peter Gathercole is an excellent Fly tying book. I have been fly tying for about six months now and I have searched for the best Fly tying books around. As far as Fly tying books goes for a beginner, it probably doesn't go in detail far enough. But after your first couple of flies(Four or Five), this book would be excellent. To start off with this book covers a lot of flies, 50 in all. In addition it has a spiral binding, so you can open it up as you tie, which I feel is mandatory for a fly tying book. The description of each fly is four pages long, highlighting the most difficult parts. On the first two pages it gives a detailed picture of the fly as well as pictures of the material needed to make the fly; this is particularly helpful to a beginner. It also tells of the type of fish that this fly would presumably be used to catch. As far as the general info on the book it has the usual Pictures in the front of the book to show particular techniques as well as the basic tools and material used. One of my favorite parts of this book is on page 47. It has a fly selector with pictures of all 50 flies in the book which is very helpful, especially when you only have limited abilities and material. Over all this is one of the best books I have seen on fly tying so good in fact that I bought it for my own Reference.
The Best Fly Tying Starter Edition I've seen...........2006-09-01
I Manage a Fly Fishing retail outlet and would see most of the flytying books available.
Fly Tying For Beginners: How to Tie 50 Failsafe Flies would have to be the best I have seen by a mile. It starts with clear and simple explanations of all the gear names and recipes required to start tying. A great tool for the raw beginner and seasoned tyer both.
Great fly recipes top off a very valuable addition to the flytying creel. Its a must have, there is no doubt in my mind there is nothing like it on the market. The Fly Tying Bible[by the same author] also follows on from where Fly Tying For Beginners: How to Tie 50 Failsafe Flies this book brings the tyer's skills to a high level with clear and simple recipes and picture instructions.
The binder cover is the best idea since slice bread, its sits on the tying bench and can be easily referenced without closeing up or looseing your page.
To the Auther... Thanks for a chance to sell and use this great publication.

Not bad, but ..........2006-06-24
There are some truly great things to say about Mr. Gathercole's book, "Fly Tying for Beginners." First, it is laid out in a very sensible manner. Starting with tools and techniques up front, followed by a list of flies, all in awesome crystal-clear color photos. The book's size and wire wound binding makes it so easy to use on at the tying bench.
That said, as a novice to fly tying, I found myself going to other resources to research techniques such as tying hair wings. In addition, it would have been MORE helpful (for me) if some of the techniques I needed to use were found in the same pages as the fly I was tying at that time. One other point is that I found myself having to guess several times on tail lengths, hackle sizes, and occasionally material placement.
Overall, I'm very glad to have this book as a reference, but I'm also glad I have OTHER references to assist me with the gaps of information I found missing in this one.
Excellent book.......2006-03-04
This is an excellent book. It is for beginners and that is exactly what I am. The photographs are in bright full color and take you step by step through the tying of the fly. There are a lot of fly tying books out there and I have looked through dozens and dozens of them. Not one of them came close to being as good as this book.
The wire o' binding that lets the book lie flat is just an added bonus.
Fly tying for beginners.......2006-03-01
The book is as user friendly as is possible. It's ringed binding allows it to lie flat on the table and the size of the book is just right, not too small nor too big. The diagrams are easy to follow and unique in their design. I like novel designs and compliment the author on his creativity. If I were to design a book, this would be it.

The best book to begin with.......2000-06-07
If I had it all to do over again I would begin fly-fishing by reading this book. It's title tells the truth. The book is obviously written for the beginning fly-fisher but that does not mean it is light-weight in its information. Rutter & Card give very solid information and explain it throughly enough for it to become easy to understand. The book is full of black and white pictures and diagrams to help the reader visualize what the writers are talking about. They will explain what you need to do and then show you pictures of how to do it. The Table of Contents is also a big help because it breaks down where you can find each sub-grouping within each chapter (the Table of Contents is almost as big as the Index). All together this makes "Fly Fishing Made Easy" a book that I am still glad I have in my library, even though I am no longer a beginner.
Great book for beginning fly fishers!.......1999-05-18
This book is well written in a light yet very informative manner. The author's cut to the basics and keep it simple. Well worth the price and the reading.

Fly Fishing Made Easy.......2007-02-23
Of all the beginning fly fishing books I own or have read, I like this one the best. I find that most all of my questions are answered in this book and still refer back to it when I forget something. I first owned the 3rd edition and the 4th has been updated with gear and mehtods not available in the ealier editions. If you are just getting started, this is not a bad place to begin.

THE BOOK to read if you want to learn to fly fish!.......2002-06-04
Twenty years ago I bought "Fly Fishing For Trout", the previous incarnation of this book (from a different publisher) and it made me a fly fisherman. I've already been through three copies of the present (expanded, revised, updated) edition, as the people I lend it to never return it.
While the book does have it's shortcomings, such as an outdated equipment section, and a slant toward Eastern (Catskill) style fishing, it is still an incredibly complete and concise overview of what you need to know to become a proficient
trout angler. I do not find Mr. Talleur's style overly arrogant. I believe that this is a tightly targeted work, aimed, as it says in the title, for beginners. Just before the beginning of every season I read it again, and I am always a better fisherman for it.
For an experienced angler, there would be better books, but if you are the person in the title, a beginner, this should be the first book you read.
A decent book, but not great.......2000-02-29
As I'm writing this, I see it's out of stock from the publisher. The reason I'm still bothering to write a review is to make you feel a little better if you're dying to find it. I noticed it got rave reviews in certain circles. I've wondered if these were friends of Talleur's, or if he simply has a good reputation. I'm an intermediate flyfisherman, and I really didn't find this book as useful as I hoped. It's a *good* book, just not a *very* good book. I found the chapter on leader construction quite useful. The book seems to assume that you'll be fishing during a hatch on classic trout waters. This is only a slight exaggeration, but let's face it - the vast majority of trout flyfishing done in this country is not during the Hendrickson hatch on a calm pool on the Beaverkill. The chapters on casting and rod/reel selection are only mediocre (although I've read better casting instruction, most equipment discussions in books seems to be mediocre.) So that leaves the fishing. And I can't help but noticing a subtle bit of arrogance in Talleur's writing, as if he seems to be saying "This is a great book." I can't put my finger on why. I would have to recommend other books for the fishing aspect, such as Rosenbauer's excellent "Prospecting for Trout" or Humphrey's slightly off-beat "On the Trout Stream". I have glanced at Kreh's "Presenting the Fly" and that may be a real winner - we'll see!
