The Best Wolf Photography Book.......2007-03-21
As a huge wolf freak and artist, I always found it difficult to draw the beautiful bodies of wolves from tiny little pictures shoved in the corners of other books. Although the info was great, I always felt a tad sad to see such a lovely picture shrunk down. In this book, the photos are huge, and beautifuly detailed. I treasure this book and reccemend the Wolves at our Door book by Jim and Jamie Dutcher as well as their two documentaries: Living with wolves and Wolves at our Door
Outstanding.......2007-01-10
I have always loved wolves and had watched the Sawtooth pack since they were first formed. Now the originals are all gone. The pictures in the book are magnificent and tells their story.
Kids Can Read This Book, too!.......2006-09-25
(My mommy is typing this for me but she wrote down everything I wanted to say on a piece of paper first.)
Hello. My name is Jordan Elizabeth and I am 8 years old. I really, really love wolves and I have read about 20 books for kids about wolves. Wolves are very special creatures but a lot of people don't know that. A lot of people think wolves are mean and want to hurt people but actually they don't.
Of all the books I have about wolves, "Living With Wolves" is my favorite even though it's more like an adult book. While searching for more wolf books with my mommy on her computer, I saw "Living With Wolves" on this website and wanted to say what I also think about this book because not many people wrote their thoughts here yet.
I got this book in New York City where my family flew and we went to a museum to see and meet the Dutchers. This was the greatest time of my whole life! I've never actually met a movie star before until I met Jim & Jamie. I've seen their dvds about a hundred times and I think it's so cool that they actually lived with wolves! After they were done speaking we bought this book.
The next day we got on a plane to fly home and my mom and dad let me take out the book. They didn't want me to wreck it because it is the nicest wolf book and it is very heavy with amazing pictures. On the plane I started to read the book. My mom helped me with some of the bigger words but not a lot. The pictures are really beautiful in the book and there are some of the wolf pups that are so adorable, too! In the beginning I couldn't wait to read what the Dutchers had to say and I just started reading the book all by myself. Usually I love to find all the pictures first but this time I didn't.
I think this book is great for everyone and I am writing this because the Dutchers write a good book that even kids will like and teaching us about them. My parents weren't really interested in wolves before they got me the Dutcher's dvds and now they love them, too. The book even came with a CD stuck inside that has just wolves howling and I love listening to their sounds!
So that's what I think. I hope the Dutchers can live with the wolves again sometime so I can learn more because they are kind and caring and really great teachers.
Bye.
Living With Wolves.......2006-02-23
Absolutely awesome photography and story!
Some of the best wolf photography I have seen.
This book is very well done with the photography and the story; the vocalization CD certainly completes it. One can listen to the howls, look at the pictures, and feel like a part of this wolf family.
EXCELLENT book for wolf lovers.......2005-09-01
This is the best book of its type about wolves. Jim and Jamie Dutcher's photography catches the full range of experiences and emotions. The photography alone is worth 5 stars in my opinion.
I was also glad to see that half the book was NOT taken up by pictures of dead wolves and wolf pelts. The slaughter of wolves at the hands of humans NEEDS to be stopped, yet I look for books which celebrate the beauty of the LIVING wolf instead of showing page after page of dead animals. This book is a "must buy" for all wolf lovers.

wonderful.......2001-07-02
This is a wonderful book with lots of amazing wolf and landscape pictures. While some people might be disturb by some of the dead animals in the picture, as a animal lover I reckon this book had shown the reality of the nature truthfully, and I really love this book.
Beautiful Photos.......2000-07-08
This is an excellent book on artic wolves. I enjoyed reading about their lives. If you are not in the mood to read the photos are worth the cost of the book.
It takes a village-the wolf still knows what we've forgotten.......1999-09-02
Brandenburg's experience shows the wolf as a loving and compassionate family-oriented animal that is as wild at heart as they come. These highly intelligent creatures seemed to stay a step ahead of their distant watchers. This leads to some hilarious encounters and a tear jerking ending. Follow this up with "Brother Wolf."
like nature-this book will fascinate and teach men for ever.......1997-12-21

If you want an exotic pet, read this.......2007-07-15
This book was written in a time when spaying and neutering animals wasn`t popular, and when wildlife laws were nothing but peices of scrap paper. The author raises her wolf pups from Arctic Wild but sadly, only one puppy manages to live without somehow being shot to death, ill or attacked. The author tries to make the dogs and the wolf happy, but she only creates more havoc by rearing dangerous wolf dogs and feral animals that can never be tamed. The end is sad, but none the less not surprising, the wolf`s home fails her as well as her desire to be free from captivity. The message is very clear, people kill wild animals when they think of them as pets. I reccemend this book to those intrested, because it hould change your perception on keeping exotic animals.
Captive Wild.......2006-06-05
The story of the author's experiences raising wolves, dogs and wolf-dogs in the mountains of Colorado.
This was recommended to me as a good nature writing book, but what I found in it appalled and saddened me. With no veterinary care for much of the time, with insufficient housing so that animals frequently escaped and were shot by locals, with zero control so that fights and even killings broke out among the canines on what sounds like a regular basis, and with repeated injuries to the animals from hazards such as barbed wire, the Crisler menage sounds like something I'd expect to see on "Animal Planet Heroes" -- and I'd expect to see the perpetrator going to jail.
There's no reason to breed wolf-dogs. They cannot be released into the wild in case they contaminate the genetics of wild wolves, and their lack of fear of man makes them dangerous to themselves and others. In most cases, they also don't make good pets. Despite this, the book chronicles the production of several, rather randomly sired, litters of wolf-dogs.
My disturbance at this book can be summed up in two quotes. First, "In October, three good dogs were killed to make the pen safe for Baranof when he should enter (p. 95)." That passive construction is deceptive. The author, presumably, or someone working with her, killed the "three good dogs" so that a prospective sire of wolf-dogs wouldn't get in fights. (Separate runs too hard to conceive of??) And this is far from the only expedient killing in the book.
Then, ". . .Wallie, whose own newborn puppies had been killed by Alatna and who was still hemorrhaging. . .(p. 130)". That line kind of sums up the whole menage, in my opinion. No control, no responsibility. Horrible.
And then, of course, there's the end, which makes it pretty clear just how much the animals were "loved".
Read the Dutchers' book instead.
Captive Wild.......2006-01-31
When reading upon the first pages of this work, I noticed a definite connection between the wolves and humans, a warmth, such, that would be continued over many years and pages of the book. I saw how this situation took place, as the book unfolded. Chris and Lois cared for these wolves and became one with them. Instead of killing them, they brought them back to Colorado after the Arctic expedition. There were many times when tears came to my eyes when there were special encounters with the wolves, especially Alatna. I know, I have a wolf dog myself. They are the most intelligent, comforting animals I have ever known. The book plays out over seven years.....with Alatna having pups and other givings and misgivings. Alatna and other wolves who needed a constant care were given it. You must read the book....However, the ending was the most tragic situation I could imagine. This couple had to move from Craig Cabin so the land could be sold. Instead of inquiring of wolf sanctuaries......Lois and Chris Killed Alatna and many of their bretherin. This left me cold. They brought Alatna from Alaska and others, plus produced offspring, and in the end .....willfully killed them.....My heart runs cold with this. I call upon our maker to have mercy on these wolves souls...Alatna loved Lois and the situation she had with humans and trusted them. Why did they betray her and her bretherin?? As to the hand of MAN, who kills in the interest of himself. I find no other alternative but hell, for these persons.
I cried at the ending of this book, I pounded my fists on my legs and cried, humans are so stupid and cruel.

The Ultimate Wolfdog Primer!!.......2006-10-28
Nichole's book can be considered the ultimate primer for those interested in keeping wolfdogs, or even for those who are just interested in these unique animals. This book, and Nichole's other book, "Wolfdogs, A to Z" should be required reading for animal trainers, behaviorists and veterinary professionals. Mike Lehane, Vice President, Wolfdog Rescue Resources, Inc.
"Fantastic book for Wolfdog Owners or Anyone Considering a Wolfdog!.......2006-05-18
There is not a lot of information available on wolf hybrids, and it seems a lot of what is out there is biased either to suggest that they are great pets for anyone, or
that they are evil creatures who should be banned or euthanized. Wilde's book gives straightforward, helpful information without a bias, although you can tell that she loves these animals. She goes over things you should consider before buying a wolf hybrid like containment, commitment of time and money, and legalities in your area. She gives helpful concrete information like how to build an "escape-proof" pen, how to introduce a new member to your existing pack, nutritional requirements, veterinary consideraitons, and so many other things that you will find yourself referring back to. The book is also written in a friendly tone and is quite humorous in places. I highly recommend it, along with her other wolf hybrid book "Wolfdogs A-Z: Behavior, Training and More."
"Living with Wolfdogs, Second Edition is a must read.".......2006-05-12
"Nicole Wilde, has done it again. She has added new information and guidelines to her already by far, the best book on Living with Wolfdogs. This is a must read for anyone who loves and cares for these magnificant animals. Thank you Nicole"
Michelle Silmon, Founder, Grandmother's Rescue Center, California
A realistic, balanced look at wolfdog ownership.......2005-12-13
I'm not sure what book the previous poster was reading, because this book most definitely gives both sides of wolfdog ownership. (Read the rest of the reviews, they're more realistic.) It outlines both the wonderful things about these animals, and covers in detail the possible difficulties. Wilde covers how wolfdogs can be escape artists, destructive, in some cases not as reliable in training as normal dogs, and a lot more. I like how she maintains a chatty, warm tone that is still very informative. And although she obviously has a great love for wolfdogs she is careful about painting a realistic picture of what living with them is like. I liked the Wolfdogs A-Z book as well and am looking forward to buying the new 2nd edition of Living with Wolfdogs.

Amazing, Beautiful Spirits.......2007-07-31
I enjoyed this book very much! Being an owner of two of my own wolf-dogs, I could identify with this author and his wife. It is an amazing & unforgetable journey. Many trials, but it is all worth it! Animals are such wonderful teachers, as Lobo was. For you, Lobo, thank you.
Great Read!.......2005-05-04
I enjoyed this book because I felt like the author was telling a story from his heart. I am not knowledgeable about wolf dogs, but this book has certainly shown me the nature of wolf dogs I did not know. It will make you interested in reading more about wolves and wolf dogs. It is also a very spiritual story. A very beautiful story.
Great Wolf Book.......2005-04-27
I am an intense animal lover and found this book to make me want to reach out to all animals in need of homes. This is a very informative book giving more insight to the nature of wolf dogs. I wish for all animal lovers to read this book before thinking of adopting a wolf dog. It is a very touching and spiritual story of the bond between man and animal.
Living with a Wolfdog.......2005-03-03
I happen to be the breeder of Lobo. In reading this story I was amazed at how much Lobo is like his sister, Cherokee. Living with a wolfdog is a highly spiritual journey that most people treasure for a lifetime. I really couldn't put in words what I felt. I really did love the book. I've told everyone about it. I ordered 2 more to give as gifts.
Man and Wolf Dog bond.......2005-02-06
Excellent job! It was hard for me to put this book down as you were able to convey to your readers the compassion, love, patience and total dedication it took to develop a strong bond between a wolf dog with his master. You should be very proud of your accomplishment and your book.
Book Description
John Starks: My Life chronicles John Starks' miraculous ascension from going undrafted after one just one season at Oklahama State to his stellar career with the New York Knicks. Fans remember his memorable career in New York, capsuled by two remarkable, yet polar-opposite games. The highest of highs would be his triumphant dunk over Horace Grant and Michael Jordan, known in Knick history as "The Dunk," in the waning moments of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls which put the Knicks up two games to none. Starks also holds nothing back about his 2-for-18 shooting drought in Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets, which was the last real chance the Knicks have had for a championship since 1973. Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, Mark Jackson, Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller, Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy are all seen anew through Starks' clear, no-nonsense eyes. Starks also describes his other NBA stops in Golden State, Utah and, briefly, Chicago. In addition, Starks names his all-minor league-to-NBA team, his all-heart-on-the-jersey team and his all-shooting team. Starks' autobiography describes the star's rise from life in inner-city Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a child, John did not escape trouble, stealing from stores and later cars with a friend who later died in a high-speed car crash with the police. He credits his escape and rapid rise to the influence of his older brother, Monry, who watched the majority of John's NBA career from behind bars, and the single mother that raised John and his siblings. John later attended four junior colleges before making his breakthrough and playing Division I college basketball at Oklahoma State. Montry, before he was sent away to prison, was the one who drove John, toughening him up in savage games of one-on-one and convincing John that he had more in him than just being a drug dealer like himself and playing basketball on the playgrounds of Tulsa. It was Monty who called Leonard Hamilton, the then-coach of Oklahoma State, and got Coach Hamilton to come down and watch John play at Oklahoma Junior College, resulting in a scholarship. Finally, it is a book about family and Starks moving back to Tulsa and raising his family of three children (John Jr. is an aspiring basketball player with a dream to make it to the NBA like his father) with his wife, Jackie, and helping Monty after his release from prison in 2000. Montry now lives in a house on John's property, adjacent to John's house, and has helped him find employment. The two are avid golf partners who, although they constantly fight over everything from Montry rooting for OU and John for OSU, share a bond forged on the hardscrabble streets of North Tulsa.

In his own words, get to know the real John Starks.......2007-03-25
Outside of Patrick Ewing, former CBA veteran John Starks is probably one of the most recognizable figures in New York sports during the 90's. In his book, Starks talks about his humble beginnings--moving from four different college academic programs to making it to the New York Knicks on a technicality (as injured players can't be cut from their teams, John attempted to dunk of Patrick Ewing during the pre-season in 88' and got hurt in the process).
Through his words, Starks shares the will, desire, and tenacity which made him one of the most exciting and controversial players to ever play in the NBA. Starks shares stories that made him the most decorated guard to ever come out of the CBA with accolades such as the winning a spot on the NBA All-Star team and the 6th Man of the year award. He also talks about his horrible game 7 performance in the 1994 NBA finals as well as the trials and tribulations which he and a number of his family members had to go through.
If your a fan of the NBA, this is certainly one ride you wouldn't want to miss! Get your copy today!

Honest self appraisal.......2006-08-02
Starks does a good job here detailing his life and whats most rewarding is his confession of his errors and failures on and off the court. That is this book's strong points.
There are good photos here.
John discussing some of the nutty fans who stalked him is a good read and my personal favorite is his story of the first time he drives his mother and grandmother thru Manhattan traffic, weaving in and around the taxis. The description of what was going on with the two women had melaughing.
The weakness of this book is the dvd that is included with it.
John should have paid someone a little bit more money to produce this thing a little better. And throughout the book, he repeats a lot of the bad stuff that happened to his brothers over and over again. Hos co-writer should have edited that a little bit better.
Hopefully John will coach the Knicks one day. If you're a Knicks fan, then read this book.
Great book about a great man.......2006-05-22
john starks was my idol growing up. Before he came to the knicks they were very mediocre. As he says in the book his rise coincided with the knicks title contension throughout the 90's. The book was very good and gave great insight into the man before his career. I was shocked when i read that he used to sell drugs and had been in jail. i followed everything about him back in the day and i remember never hearing about his father so it surprised me to hear that he met his father a couple times. anyway i lived and died with starks the dunk was this city's highest high and 2-18 well u do the math. i recommend this book to anyone who loved a good underdog story about a man with a heart as big as the big apple
Why I Love John Starks.......2006-01-16
I raced through reading this autobiography of John Starks, mainly for personal reasons. The rise of John Starks as a New York Knick corresponded with a lot of overcoming personal struggles in my own life, and I've always felt a deep connection with his story, his explosiveness as a player and as a person, his perpetual teetering on the edge of self-wreckage, and with his continuing maturity and enormous heart that he always brought to the table. This book is hardly a sophisticated read, so if you're looking for that, go elsewhere. But if you look at John Starks as I do, as a true phenomenon of character and class, as someone who broke through barrier after barrier, tripped over his own bad habits along the way and still always remained deeply resolute in his belief in himself, then you'll love hearing how his voice comes through the writing of Dan Markowitz. Learning about the chaotic and reckless background of John's life reminded me of how gritty and passionate he was as a player, how his unstoppable desire shook the NBA world. But even in a moment like "The Dunk," John always remained a humble, down to earth man, someone undisturbed by the glow of fame, even more human because of the doubt that always followed his brilliant success. I wish he could have won a championship and have his number retired at the Garden, but in a way, even though his "2 for 18" night left fans like me forever hungry, the dramatic ironies that occupy his life story and the peace that he discovers within himself allow me to savor the tales he tells in this book, as I will forever be inspired by one of the most unique and lovable characters in the history of New York sports.
Turning Himself Around.......2005-04-10
John Starks' story is full of inspiration. The man grew up in a rough area of Tulsa, Oklahoma without a fatherly figure. His mother and grandmother instilled some positive attributes. However, John faced many troubles growing up and his brothers had a mixed influence on him.
However, John Starks perservered from a troubled youth stocking shelves in Safeway to an NBA All Star. John overcame many obstacles in the NBA and earned the respect of many of his peers in spite of a few overzealous actions on his part.
What really comes accross in this book(and from listening to John speak in person) is the that Mr. Starks has turned into quite an articulate and intelligent young man. He sets a good example as a USBL coach and certainly would be a good candidate to coach in the NBA. John's strong work ethic will indeed carry him to much further success.
A good read even for Chicago Bull, Miami Heat and Indiana Pacer fans!
