    Book Description

The first general-interest study of the global spread of alien, "exotic" organisms and how they are undermining the world's ecosystems and societies. Worldwatch Institute researcher Chris Bright explains why conservation biologists are raising the alarm about a global threat to biodiversity that is unfolding largely unnoticed-bioinvasion, the spread of alien, "exotic" organisms. With the exception of a few spectacular invasions, like the zebra mussel's conquest of the Great Lakes, there has been little public recognition of the dangers posed by these invading species. But exotic species are injuring our biological wealth on virtually every level-from the genetic (when exotics interbreed with native species) to the wholesale transformation of landscapes. Life Out of Bounds shows that this "biological pollution" is now beginning to corrode the world's economies as well. But the policy responses, on both the national and international levels, have usually been weak and uncoordinated. This book outlines the current scientific research on the threat, the social and economic implications if these invasions are allowed to continue unchecked, and steps that can be taken to contain the spread of exotic species.

5 out of 5 stars Life Out of Bounds: Bioinvasion in a Borderless World.......2003-01-23

Technology is advancing and the world is becoming a smaller and smaller place. Due to this always changing world, bioinvasion has become a new danger to the planet. Bioinvasion is the spread of exotic species that invade and spread all over the world, destroying ecosystems, endangering public health, disrupting the cultures of traditional forest and fishing peoples, and costing billions of dollars a year. These invaders range from highly flammable weeds to human pathogens and forest diseases. Worldwatch Institute researcher Chris Bright tracks and explains the dangers of bioinvasion, and analyzes the rate at which it is spreading. Bright outlines a counter-invasion strategy that can help prevent these alien species from spreading across the globe, and demonstrates how to appreciate native plants and animals. This insightful and informational book explains this danger that the public is not aware of, and how we can stop bioinvasion before it costs us the termination of nearly all native species.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, timely work........2000-10-16

This is an intelligent, important contribution to the field, and would make a superb addition to a college reading curriculum on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Writing out of bounds.......2000-04-20

Chris Bright's book on bioinvasion is timely and certainly on an important topic. The author is clearly informed on the numerous examples of the devastating environmental problem and the policy and social issues related to it. However, this is one of the most poorly organized books I have ever read. I read it with a group of college sophomores and the students were generally completely lost as to the purpose or direction of the writing throughout the text. While the author can surely take some blame, why didn't Norton provide some editorial guidance? In general, each chapter was filled with miscellaneous examples of the devastating effects of introduced species. But the examples were not organized in any apparent fashion within chapters nor was there any presentation of the basic ecological mechanisms or processes involved. The book presents a convincing argument that bioinvasion is a real problem, but no indication as to why or what, scientifically, can be done about it. The last two chapters are somewhat better: the last chapter's emphasis on scientific literacy was much appreciated. All in all, this book was a disappointing and confusing read.

Moab is a mecca for mountain bikers, who come from around the world to ride its challenging trails. Whether you're a newcomer to the area or a frequent fat-tire flier, Mountain Bike America: Moab is a great addition to your fanny pack. Local cyclist Lee Bridgers blends his passion for mountain biking with his obvious love of Moab, describing 49 rides ranging from easy (Old Moab Highway, Dalton Wells) to "very difficult to abusive" (Porcupine Rim). Each starts with an overview--where to start, how far the ride is, how long you can expect it to take, warnings, environmental concerns, and how to get there--before launching into a detailed description of what you'll experience along the way, be it slick rock, deep sand, dinosaur tracks, or rusted mining equipment. Bridgers is careful to point out places where cyclists should use caution, encouraging less experienced riders to dismount--"if you are pushing a mountain bike, you are still mountain biking. Live to ride tomorrow." Detailed maps will help you plan your days--especially the cross-sections of each ride's ups and downs. Throughout the book, Bridgers emphasizes the need to protect the environment--"as mountain bikers we had better learn to co-exist with nature or else we'll lose the privileges to enjoy it from the saddle"--and offers up stories from his experiences as one of Moab's leading bike tour guides. Special sections on safety (carry more water than you think you'll need), bike selection and repair, Moab-necessary techniques (sand riding, dealing with flies), and area food, lodging, and services make this a useful all-around resource. --Sunny Delaney

        Book Description

We flock to it in droves to pay homage to what many consider the North Shore, the Mount Everest, the Vatican, the Taj Mahal, the Empire State Building, the Marilyn Monroe of mountain biking -- Moab, Utah. But mind you, Moab is not for everyone. Nowhere is the terrain more challenging or more dangerous. Nowhere is the penalty stiffer for screwing up. But if mountain bikers don't ride Moab, they will forever dream of what could have been. Moab is simply the best mountain bike destination on earth. No question. No controversy. No ifs, ands, or buts. It gets under your skin. Come here once, and you will come again and again.

From this book mountain bikers can expect exhaustive and comprehensive trail descriptions, from beginner to advanced, GPS-quality, digitally designed relief maps detailing each ride, and accurate profiles maps showing the ups and downs of each route. In addition, detailed directions get cyclists to the ride without getting them lost. Detailed mile-by-mile directional cues are also provided with difficulty ratings, elevation gain, trail contacts, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking Moab, 2nd Edition: A Guide to Moab, Utah's Greatest Off-Road Bicycle Rides.......2006-05-20

I read several guides about mountain biking Utah prior to my recent trip. I have to say that of the 3 I read, Lee's book was not only thorough, but very accurate. When you get to Utah, you realize how immense the actual area is. There's alot of opportunity to ride, but also for peril. Lee does a nice job of telling stories that are interesting, give a heads up on local cool things, covers ecological and social issues that are relevant, and is a hip and thoughful author. I give the book 5 chili peppers. I will say, it would be nice to have a smaller format I could take in my hydrapack. Instead, I used a human guide!

1 out of 5 stars Poor and biased.......2005-09-24

I've read the book and biked with the authors company based in Moab and don't recommend either.

There are many other guides to Moab which are cheaper and equally informative (try Biker Mel's.). Only when you meet the author, ride the routes he describes, the routes he doesn't describe and hear what the locals have to say about him (all bad) do you realise how unreliable this book is. It is just too biased by the authors own personal opinion.

This guy is decsribed locally as a biker snob who made enemies after slagging off everybody else in Moab in this book and who refers to routes as 'his trails'.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-08-20

Any one going to Moab needs this book. Some of the trails are just variations of the same main trail but it gives some great information.

2 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking Moab.......2005-03-23

The author provides excellent information, maps and important details that will help make your Moab experience much less frightening. The book will also familiarize you with the terrain/trails before you get there. However, Mr. Bridgers still manages to ruin it by being rude, crude and derogatory throughout the book. The text is full of swearing and blasphemy, crude descriptions of which body parts rock formations resemble, and put-downs aimed at Mormons; he promotes lies and almost never portrays Latter-day Saints in a good light. All of the information that you need from this book can be obtained in the Mountain Bike Moab Pocket Guide, and that book will fit into your Camelbak. Save your money, and don't buy this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Don't bother - it SUCKS!!.......2004-11-24

Bridgers has his mountain bike clients write reviews for him. I lived in Moab for 15 years and can say this book isn't worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide to southwest Utah mountain biking.......2001-05-28

I found Bruce Grubbs's guide essential to locating and navigating the trails of Washington and Garfield counties in southwest Utah. I rode the Green Valley, J.E.M., Thunder Mountain, and Paradise Canyon trails in May 2001, and particularly loved the Green Valley and Thunder Mountain trails. Be careful -- each of these trails has hazards and technical challenges.

The book fits nicely in one's hydration pack or jersey pocket. One thing that Grubbs notes is worth repeating: you have to have an odometer to locate and navigate some of the trails he reviews. Otherwise you won't find them.

Another good source of information is the trail reviews at Mountain Bike Review's website... And some local clubs and stores have useful websites with trail descriptions. Use a search engine to locate them.

5 out of 5 stars Key to Heavenly Mountain Bike Rides.......2000-04-04

I just finished a mountain biking vacation in the Zion area. Between this book and Dean at "Bike Zion," I found some incredible singletrack: Green Valley and Church Rocks in the St. George area, and Gooseberry Mesa, the JEM trail, and Slickrock Swamp just outside of Zion. I rode them all and loved them. I ride in Moab frequently, and the trails on Gooseberry surpass anything in Moab, except maybe Jackson's Hole. The book is very helpful with directions and trail descriptions, but why are not more Zion area rides included? In July, I'm headed back to the area, this time to Brian Head, with book in hand! To the author: thanks for your research and sharing these world-class rides.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain Biking St. George/Cedar City.......2000-04-03

This is a super handy book that describes biking trails in Southwestern Utah. With trails ranging in elevation from under 4,000 feet to around 11,000 feet, you can ride just about any day of the year somewhere near St. George or Cedar City. There are trails for all levels of abilities, from advanced to Sunday sight-seeing. Although most trails involve a lot of singletrack layout, there are a few that are on jeep roads or even smoother surfaces. This book opened my eyes to the fact that there is much more to mountain biking in Utah than just heading down to Moab. And I especially like the smaller size of the book, that allows it to easily fit in your back pocket or in your camelback.

From the overused and overpromoted Slickrock Trail to the eerie and remote digressions in and around Beef Basin, a tour through Moab, Utah proves that it is truly the mountain biking capital of the world. David Crowell's guide is a useful, bare-bones guide to over 42 area rides. It isn't flooded with photographs or drawings, but the route descriptions are right on the money and it's the only book small enough to throw into your Camelback without a second thought. --Ben Tiffany

5 out of 5 stars The only one you NEED!.......2001-06-26

This is a great book. I first found out about the entire Falcon series of books from some friends. They loaned this book to me when I made my first trip to Moab. We had other books with us but this is the only one we used. I have since purchased the Falcon guide's for Grand Junction/Fruita and Denver/Boulder.

            3 out of 5 stars Rider beware!.......2001-05-16

On a recent trip to Moab a friend and I relied on this book for directions. We tried four of the rides. The directions are not always clear, although three of the four rides were on trails that were either well-marked or obvious. But Crowell's directions for the "Courthouse Wash" route were indecipherable; we spent several hours trying to find our way with little success. So I wouldn't rely on this book alone. I also noticed that the bike shops in Moab carried several trail guides, but not this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide with fun prose!.......2000-10-14

This book delivers the goods. It doesn't waste time telling you how dangerous things are.. It gives a straight-forward account of what to expect so you can make informed decisions about what trails to ride. But... best of all.. it's fun to read. Trails like "Prostitute Behind the Rocks.. aka... a nice butte." show that this guy not only lives and breathes biking.. but he also is extremely literate. A biker sence of humor cranks through each description. A must buy even if you aren't going to Moab. Sit back. Take a swig of your favorite Eddie McStiff's brew and read Mountain Biking Moab.

5 out of 5 stars The only guide you'll need!.......2000-02-16

I purchased Mountain Biking Moab a couple of weeks ago to supplement my collection of Moab mountain biking books, and after using it this past weekend, I can sell all my other books!
