Book Description
When Koala Lou’s mother becomes so busy that she forgets to tell her firstborn how much she loves her, Koala Lou enters the Bush Olympics, intending to win an event and her mother’s love all at one time. “A first-rate choice for bedtime, story hour, or reading aloud.”--The Horn Book
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-02-19
As others have noted here before, this book is delightful! It's a great read for a child whose family is growing and may feel uncertain about where she fits into her mother's life and love. I bought this book years ago simply because I love the illustrations by Pamela Lofts, but when my sister found out she was pregnant with her second child I knew it would be a great story to share with her first son. Lofts' color pencil artwork is reason enough to buy this book--pair that with the work of master storyteller Mem Fox and you can't lose.
Wonderful and Touching Story!.......2007-01-03
I had this book back when I was in college and studying to be a teacher. Recently my daughter started Kindergarten and her teacher read this book to all of the parents at back to school night. It brought tears to my eyes and I went home and ordered a new copy for my daughter. Mem Fox is one of my favorite children's authors and this book is a very touching story about a little Koala who is looking for her mother's continued love and affection.
placid and sweet.......2006-10-03
This is a lovely book for young readers, not only because the story and pictures are sweet, simple, and engaging, but because it is important that children feel loved and not mistake fewer reassurances from the mother for lack of affection. This is an especially great book for children who are about to lose that valued only-child status--Lou's feelings are common among children with new siblings. It is not challenging or particularly rousing as far as stories go, but then I do not think that is its intent. It creates a warm sense of comfort and peace.
koala lou.......2006-06-29
This story is of a little koala. The littie koala thinks that her mom does not like her. She thinks that because her mother got three koala baby. I like this story because I learned that if you mom you still love all your kids. I will recommend to others so they can learn a lesson.
Great book to prepare children for the birth of a younger sibling!.......2006-04-19
Have you ever felt like your parents loved your brothers and sisters more than they loved you? Did Dad spoil your siblings, but not you? Did mom spend more time with them than with you? If so, you're not alone.
"Koala Lou" is the story of a young koala by the same name. Everyday her mother looks at her and says, "Koala Lou, I DO love you!" However, after Koala Lou's mother gave birth to other koalas, she became too busy to express her feelings for her oldest child. Thus, Koala Lou joins the Bush Olympics, hoping to not only win first place, but her mother's affections as well.
Like others who are not the only child in the family, Koala Lou's feelings mirrored my own. Before my baby brother was born, I was the center of attention. My parents always attended to my every need, whether it was something as basic as food or something as random as my sudden impulses to go to the park and play on the swings. My parents provided me with whatever I wanted. But most importantly, they paid a lot of attention to me. Yes, I was a spoiled little girl. That all changed when my baby brother was born. At first, I felt happy and excited about having a new family member. He was so cute with his chubby cheeks and tiny toes. How could I not love him? But then I realized that he was stealing the limelight away from me. No longer did relatives come over to tell me how adorable I was wearing my dress and bow in my hair. Instead, they lavished their attention on my brother. It didn't take long for me to feel left out as my parents followed suit and made my little brother the center of their world. Or at least it seemed that way. Now that I am older, I know that they were merely trying to raise him like they had raised me- providing him whatever he needed no matter what. They did not mean to make me feel neglected, and although my parents may not say it out loud, I know that deep down, their hearts scream "Lisa, I DO love you!"
This is the perfect book for a child who may feel alienated by the birth of a baby brother or sister. The child can relate the story to his/her own life. He/She may feel better knowing that there are others who feel the same way when there is a new addition to the family. Additionally, it will help the child understand that mom and dad have, and always will, love him/her no matter what happens, even if they may not always express their love for him/her out loud. It might also serve as a meaningful reminder to parents that they should always let their children know how much they care about them from time to time.
If you are a fan of Fox's other works, this is definitely a must-have! As with one of her earlier works, "Time for Bed", this book also depicts the close relationship between the mother and child through its storyline and beautiful illustrations. Some of her books, including this one, are also known for teaching valuable lessons. While Fox's "Whoever You Are" teaches children to accept those who may seem different from them, "Koala Lou" shows a child that parents will always love their children, although they may not always say it.
Two thumbs up to Mem Fox for another job well done!

Book Description
A sturdy koala bear, Kelly; an engaging doll, Dot; and a tiny, demure mouse, Esmeralda, who live quietly on top of a chest of drawers in the nursery, wake just at midnight to begin their adventures. They climb into an inviting picture on the wall that shows a charming landscape with a river running through it and a rowboat drawn up on the bank. But the delights of a village fair they visit turn to terror when Esmeralda is caught by a piratical cat -- and only Dot's quick wit and the boldest action on Kelly's part save all three of them from disaster.
Told entirely through lovely watercolor pictures, without words and with the effective use of half-pages to heighten the excitement, this luminous and imaginative story is filled with fresh delights for the many admirers of John S. Goodall's work. Its delicate charm and drama-in-miniature will win for him a host of new friends, young and old.

Full of Facts About These Beautiful Animals.......2000-08-31
Koalas are one of the most beautiful, gentle and loving animals in the world. Sadly, the population is steadily declining due to the destruction of their natural habitats. This book is a wonderful way to learn about these very intelligent creatures. Full of darling pictures, everyone who picks up this book will instantly fall in love with koalas (who, by the way, are not bears)! Read about their habits, diet and social activities, and you will develop a new appreciation for these fuzzy friends!
Koalas for All.......2000-03-02
This is a wonderful book on many counts. Information isabundant, so you can use it for reports. But the best part is thedelightful photos of koalas at sleep, play, and the dinner table. I left out "work" because it doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. One or two of the views of relaxing, snoozing koalas are alone worth the price of the book. Instead of reciting a mantra or meditating to relax, all you need do is look at those photos. A book for all ages.
Book Description
What if animals could talk? These charming books each depict a day in the life of a young animal-as told by the animal itself! The simple stories will delight small children and the art is simply outstanding. Lovely New Children's Book.......2004-11-04
It is a known fact that most youngsters love animals, so John Butler's CAN YOU CUDDLE LIKE A KOALA? is a must have for your child's bookshelf. Right before bedtime, you can take your child on a journey through the wilds, where he or she can leap like a frog, wink like an owl, and more, then say goodnight to the various animals as they nestle down for a good night's sleep. This is a gorgeous book that is filled with soothing prose that is perfect for putting a little one to bed. A must have!

Penelope Pulls Her Weight.......2005-12-14
OK, maybe the story won't rivet you, but several other things in this book almost certainly will. It's very creative, nicely illustrated, and the tabs have held up to many readings. My little guy loves it and he's none too gentle. If you only buy one pull-tab book, you can't go wrong with this one. I recommend it highly.
such a great book. LOVE IT!~.......2005-11-08
initially I picked up this book at the store because it said "Penelope"... that is what we named our 2.5 yo DD... as we read it, EVERY NIGHT, I just love it more and more.
It quickly became a favorite and now we need to collect all four. We have the winter one... just got that one the other day.
I recommend. This holiday season we are purchasing a few as gifts. The pull tabs are so sturdy and really work well... it is amazing craftsmanship and construction. I also love the painting style. Really amazing. We stare at each page.
A very sweet book, with an easy to follow story and charming pictures. Great way to get kids excited for school!.......2005-09-13
I'm not usually a fan of pop-up/pull-tab books because reading the book becomes more about the physical activity of pulling the tabs than actually reading the story...but this book is an exception. The pull-tabs are very creative and really ADD to the story...not detract from the activity of reading itself. Some of the action tabs include: penelope washes the chalkboard, tumbles in the playground, dances with a friend, hangs up her coat, feeds the fish...etc). I don't even have any children and I bought this book for my collection so that someday I would have it to share with my chldren. I can't help but take it off my shelf and flip through it. It's a great introduction to what a day at school is like and Penelope has a charm that's all her own! Love it! Great for boys or girls!
Customer Reviews:
Fine successors to Calvin Rutstrum.......2007-03-22
I happened across this book while looking for a Calvin Rutstrum book. I am a fan of old Cal's, particularly the great Paradise Below Zero, and read that it was cited in Snow Walker's Companion. I had also just purchased a large wall tent with a wood stove, and had been on a "shakedown" winter campout/Nordic ski trip, and have become quite interested in that type of winter camping. More the "old trapper" style of winter doings than the high-tech ski backpacking type.
This book fills that bill to a T, and to boot it truly carries on the Rutstrum tradition magnificently. Rutstrum had a lot of practical "northwoods" material, but he was shy on detail sometimes, and there is some stuff in his books outdated even for the modern "throwback".
This book is chock full of detail, along with fine narrative. It actually tells you how do most things you will need to do. And it is terrific to find a contemporary book that isn't afraid of the axe, fire, and gun; one that shows that you can be a great lover of the wilderness, our priceless environment, and a hunter, too. They put it very gently so as not to scare anybody off!
Valuable old-school information.......2007-02-09
This book teaches real techniques based on native practices. No fancy technology or yuppie gear, just how to be comfortable in places most people fear to go.
This book is also footnoted and referenced in many other winter camping books, always with much respect.
3rd time; Best of the Best!.......2005-12-15
The new "Snow Walker's Companion" is the third version of Garrett and Alexandra Conover's "Winter Wilderness Companion (2001) and "A Snow Walker's Companion" (1996) and although much of the material is the same, Garrett told me in an interview that it was time for a revised text. In the five years since they wrote the "Wilderness" book there have been a number of significant changes in things like portable stoves (now can be bought made of titanium), GPS navigation and some other skills and gear; Suppliers have gone out of business and new ones have come into the marketplace, and some equipment and clothing that was not available commercially, is now. Stone Ridge Press, the new publisher, has added a new section of color photos and the journal of the first major trip that the Conovers made on snowshoes, towing their supplies on native sleds. All through, the book remains highly readable, enjoyable and thought-provoking. I felt the size of the "Wilderness Companion" was better for carrying in a pack, but that little quibble aside, the new edition is one of the very best winter camping books out there.
