      Book Description

The companion book to the six-part Discovery Channel series, Weird Nature is an astonishing exploration of nature's strangest behavior. The ingenuity of all kinds of animals is celebrated including the flying dragon or draco whose membrane wings resemble early designs for aircraft wings, spiny lobsters in Florida who form a "mass conga line" when moving to deeper waters and the Wallace tree frog whose large webbed hands and feet allow it to glide as far forward as it drops vertically. These animals and many more are featured in this revealing and often amusing look at nature.

      1 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE.......2003-11-23

This book was bought after reading reviews. It was bought for a younger 'reading' child (who personally chose this book based on his love of animals). My children know the facts of life but after previewing the book and reading the section on "Breeding" I would NOT recommend this book for anyone other than adults. The choice of words used makes it TOTALLY unsuitable for children. PARENTS MAKE SURE YOU READ THROUGH THIS BOOK BEFORE BUYING!!

4 out of 5 stars Weird, Wild, Wonderful.......2003-09-19

A companion book to the BBC television series of the same name, Weird Nature is a fascinating treat for anyone, of any age, interested in the extreme variety of animal life that co-exists with us on this planet. This book is illustrated throughout with stills from the series, and it showcases animals, their locomotion and their behavior, demonstrating both the differences that set them apart and the similarities they share with us.
The wonders described here are myriad; the Pokémon-like flying gecko, the Surinam toads that hatch out of their mother's back, case-bearing clothes moth caterpillars that disguise themselves as the garments they eat, and the astounding mimic octopus are just a few of the bizarre creatures you'll meet between the covers of this book.
This is a book for children to grow into. Just like the narration to any number of nature programs, the text alternates between pop-science humorous and rather technical. But the illustrations are plentiful, and their captions are generally easy for even young children to understand. I can imagine very young children enjoying it for the pictures and their captions, then reading the primary text as they grow older, as I did with a number of natural science books I owned in my youth. What sets Weird Nature apart from the rest of the herd (if you'll pardon my pun) is its focus on the strange, unexpected and truly amazing aspects of animals, both common and exotic. I would recommend this book to any curious child over the age of six.

5 out of 5 stars Examines the animal kingdom's devious defense patterns.......2002-04-10

John Downer's Weird Nature examines the animal kingdom's devious defense patterns, bizarre breeding habits, and other oddities. From unusual mimics to shrimps which stun prey with noise, this outlines some real oddities and includes fine close-up color photos throughout.

Frogs and fish raining down from the sky, giant ice bombs crashing into houses, cities floating in the sky, people glowing, a blue moon—the weather is much weirder than the forecasters make out it out to be. In this fascinating anthology, Paul Simons presents firsthand accounts of incidents that have baffled scientists and meteorologists alike. And as we face the most severe climate warming since Roman times, and with a changing landscape and the spread of new disease, the future promises to be even stranger. From survivors' accounts of being struck by lightning to murders induced by hot winds, Weird Weather is an astonishing compendium of bizarre weather phenomena.

The book explains the science behind global warming, shows how it is progressing, and says what is being and not being done to stop the problem. 5 out of 5 stars Hike to the hidden gems of Lassen.......2007-07-29

I have been going to Lassen for many years, and mainly hiked the same trails that draw people to the park....the trail to Lassen Peak, the trail to Kings Creek Falls, and the trail to Bumpass Hell. Even though I have a copy of the large trail map that includes contour lines, Salcedo-Chourre's book was what I really needed! She describes each hike and rates it for difficulty, includes the mileage, shows a map of the trail and trailheads, and includes an elevation profile. She also includes natural history, human history, and geological info where appropriate. I learned new things even about the trails I have been hiking for years! There is a section of the book that has the hikes divided by difficulty, so if you know you have no interest in a strenuous hike, you can choose from the easy and moderate hikes without looking through the whole book. This book has opened up a whole new part of Lassen to me and my family!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Guide to a Wonderful Park.......2006-09-18

Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park is very much a hiker's park. Although it is not as large as other national parks in California, it boasts numerous pretty lakes, nice volcanic peaks including Mt Lassen itself, easily the most accessible of the spectacular peaks in the Cascades, and several geothermal hot spots which resemble parts of Yellowstone National Park. It also lacks the crowds of Yosemite and, surprisingly, guidebooks.

Lassen receives a fair amount of coverage in two different hiking guides to national parks by authors John McKinney and Ann Marie Brown, but Tracy Salcedo-Chourre's book is the only complete hiking guide to the area. She is passionate about the park and it shows on every trail description. Unlike some Falcon Guide publications, this book has wonderful descriptions of destinations and just enough local and natural history to make it interesting. The 59 hikes described here range from very short nature walks to long (all day or overnight) treks. Route descriptions are very detailed and the maps are generally quite adequate. Salcedo-Chourre should also be commended on her frank admission that trail mileages are approximations and not precise.

My only complaints about the book revolve around the fact that the field research for it was done in 1998 and 1999, and it needs a second edition. In the last year, the Park Service has spent a small fortune updating their interpretive displays (they are now the nicest in the national park system) and the signs for some of the interpretive walks have changed. Similarly, heavy snows in winter of 2006 destroyed much of the Sulphur Works trail and one ranger I talked to said there was a chance the Park Service would not rebuild it at all. Finally, while I think her route description for the Pacific Crest Trail's segment through the park was excellent, she did not list the access points for the trail, instead simply starting it at the northern border of the park and ending at the southern border. Neither point has trailhead parking. Still, this is an excellent guide to a fabulous park. It will be my first resource on my next visit to Lassen.

3 out of 5 stars Out of Date, but a Charming Read. Really 3.5 Stars.......2007-04-06

This book was written in 1989 and clearly needs an update. I would be hesitant to rely on any of the information regarding visitor facilities, phone numbers, fees, and the like. Indeed, Perkins talks about the closure of facilities at Manzanita Lake. Any prospective park visitors should know that Manzanita Lake is now the largest tourist hub in the park.

So why should you get this book? The answer is that it is a simply a joy to read, and it harkens back to an older writing style. Printed on glossy paper, this book includes numerous sharp color photos as well as nice topographical maps. But what makes this book so fun is that the author has added a number of personal touches: poems, place name histories, a photo guide to trees and flowers in the park, and reprints of older nature brochures that accompanied some of the hikes. These brochures are no longer in print, but reading them here makes one realize just how much modern nature trail guides have "dumbed" down their content.

So by all means get this book if you want to enhance your experience at Lassen Volcanic National Park. But try to get some more recent guides as well. I would recommend Ann Marie Brown's broader survey 250 Great Hikes in California's National Parks and Tracy Salcedo Chourre's Hiking Lassen Volcanic National Park. Both have more recent information on trailhead changes, visitor facilities, and park regulations.

This comprehensive guide to the trails and roads of the Mt. Lassen area is tailored to a variety of outdoor recreationists--hikers and horse packers, skiers and snowshoers, botanists and bird watchers, sightseers and rock hounds, anglers and hunters. Included is a foldout topographic map.

                  Book Description

Although primarily a comprehensive trail guide to Lassen Park, this book also contains a road log keyed to the roadside markers that signal interesting features within the park, information on the natural history of the area, as well as information on campgrounds, resorts and more. Covers Lassen Park, Caribou and Thousand Lakes wildernesses, Hat Creek Valley and McArthur-Burney Falls State Park. Includes a topographic map that shows the Park and vicinity on one side, and the adjacent wilderness areas on the other.

                  1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2003-07-12

I can't believe others are reviewing this book so highly. It is an OK natural-history guide, with a decent general overview of the area. But don't try to get anywhere with this book or look for specific information. For example, although it has individual chapters for each region (e.g. Caribou wilderness, Thousand Lakes, etc.), they don't contain any information on geology, fishing, zoology, etc. Instead, these topics are lumped into their own general chapters in the front of the book. With the notable exception of the wildflowers section, these chapters seem somewhat topical and weak. In the case of fishing, the "chapter" is one page. Likewise with resorts and campgrounds, which are lumped into a three-page list in a separate chapter, rather than discussed by region.

Although it contains one nice topo for the entire Lassen area, the 1:62500 scale and lack of detailed maps for any of the sections makes finding trailheads or following trails nearly impossible. I guess it's just not clear what this book is trying to be -- if it is a natural-history guide, as the back cover proclaims, why so much space describing trails(half the book or more)? If it is a trail guide, why no decent maps to make it usable?

1 out of 5 stars Not a book for backpackers.......2003-01-16

I was very disappointed in the overall format and descriptive narrative of this book. If you are a rock hound or a naturalist that is concerned with all of the Latin names of every plant species in the Lassen area, this review may not apply. However, if you plan on using this book to help plan a multi-day backpacking/hiking trip through Lassen you should look elsewhere.

No doubt the author is very knowledgeable about the area, but the format is not for trip planning, but more for reference to read as you are walking the trails. The trails are not linked in loops, or connected for round-trip hikes in any discernable way which is a necessity for trip planning in my opinion. Overall, this book is great if you want to catalogue volcanic rock and plants, but if you are planning a backcountry trek look for another hiking guide.

4 out of 5 stars Nice guide - more than just trails, too.......2002-09-03

This book is an encyclopedic guide to the Lassen Volcanic National Park area, including Lassen itself, the Caribou and Thousand Lakes Wildernesses, Hat Creek Valley, and McArthur-Burney Falls State Park.

While the book covers its main focus - hiking trails - more than adequately, it also includes more than one hundred pages about the natural history of the area, road logs for driving in the National Park, descriptions of nature trails, and a decent, removable map of the area. Although the main text is somewhat dated (1981), a helpful six-page update from 1999 is included. All this information does make the book a little bulky for hiking or backpacking, so photocopy the pages you'll need before you hit the trail. (And remember that big guidebooks with lots of information are better than those that don't have enough!)

The only criticism I have to offer is that Schaffer tends to ramble off-track in some of his trail descriptions, but this is a minor complaint. All in all, a good, comprehensive guidebook to the area.

5 out of 5 stars The best value in hiking books.......1999-09-04

The Lassen book is great with good trail descriptons. I recomend Schaffer's books to any one who enjoys hikeing. Most of his books come with a map.
