Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes (3rd Edition)

Book Description
Ion channels underlie a broad range of the most basic biological processes, from excitation and signaling to secretion and absorption. Like enzymes, they are diverse and ubiquitous macromolecular catalysts with high substrate specificity and subject to strong regulation. This fully revised and expanded Third Edition of Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes describes the known channels and their physiological functions, then develops the conceptual background needed to understand their architecture and molecular mechanisms of operation. It includes new chapters on calcium signaling, structural biology, and molecular biology and genomics. Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes begins with the classical biophysical work of Hodgkin and Huxley, continues with the roles of channels in cellular signaling, then develops the physical and molecular principles needed for explaining permeation, gating, pharmacological modification, and molecular diversity, and ends with a discussion of channel evolution. Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes is written to be accessible and interesting to life scientists and physical scientists of all kinds. It introduces all the concepts that a graduate student should be aware of but is also effective in advanced undergraduate courses. It has long been the recognized authoritative overview of this field used by all neuroscientists.Customer Reviews:

Physiology Of Excitable Cells

Book Description
The fourth edition of this highly successful text has been extensively revised and restructured to take account of the many recent advances in the field. The classic observations of recent years can now be interpreted with the powerful new techniques of molecular biology. Consequently, there is much new material throughout the book, including many new illustrations and extensive references to recent work. The text's essential philosophy remains the same, however: it clearly explains fundamental concepts, and examines key experiments in detail. This thorough and clearly written textbook will be valuable for students of physiology, neuroscience, cell biology and biophysics.Customer Reviews:
Cellular Neurophysiology and Electrophysiology.......2005-04-17
A very good book.......2002-02-23
This book does not give core facts in a easy to regurgitate format.Don't read this a day before your exam.
What the book gives you and does better than any other neurobiology book I know about (yes, that's a tall claim, but Im comfortable making it) is a clear and concise walk through the relevant ideas and experiments that went into building a simple 'taken for granted' concept like say the synaptic vesicles.
This book more than any other made me see the facts I read in tons of other books through the eye of an experimentalist and I had a clear appreciation of the thought that went towards designing an experiment and interpreting the result.I'm not sure if this would be the best book to read for an introduction to Neurobiology but if you have some background this is a book you would like to come back to again and again.
Poorly written and hard to follow........2000-10-31
Aidley - Interesting and user friendly (mostly).......2000-09-06

Book Description
IBRO Handbook Series: Methods in the Neurosciences, Volume 5 General Editor: A. D. Smith Intracellular Perfusion of Excitable Cells Edited By P.G. Kostyuk and O.A.Krishtal With this Handbook Series, IBRO aims to fill a major gap in the world literature. The neuroscientist needs to be able to turn to which ever specialized method is most suited to the problem he is currently studying. Methods in the Neurosciences will help to provide expert advice on exactly how to carry out the experiments, on what difficulties can occur and on the limitations of the method. Intracellular Perfusion of Excitable Cells is the fifth book in the series. It describes in detail methods of replacing the internal medium of excitable cells with artificial solutions. The transmembrane ionic gradients and intracellular metabolic systems can then be precisely controlled in experiments investigating the electrical properties of the cellular membrane. The principles of the techniques were discovered over twenty years ago, and the first chapters discuss classic work on giant nerve and muscle fibres. However, the book compares and contrasts work on many different types of excitory cell, including isolated nerve cells and oocytes. New data are presented concerning the excitability of the somatic neural membrane. The final chapters analyse some common methodological problems, such as the isolation of cells from surrounding tissue and how to obtain reliable electrical measurements from perfused cell membranes. Enough experimental detail is given for the book to be of immediate practical use to research workers in all areas of neuroscience, including membrane biophysics, cell physiology, pharmacology, oncology and toxicology. One of the finest nonfiction writers in any lineup, Halberstam likes to alternate what he's deemed his serious work--books like The Best and the Brightest, The Fifties, and The Children--with his sporting interludes, though in his hands, sports are much, much more than fun and games. Books like The Breaks of the Game and October 1964 use sports as a prism. Culture, race, society, and history are all filtered through it, and Halberstam refocuses--and interprets--what comes out the other side. That he would now turn his considerable abilities to exploring Michael Jordan is not surprising. Halberstam loves hoops, and Jordan not only defines the game, he defines an era. His fame crosses international borders as easily as he dribbles past half-court lines. In focusing on Jordan--as athlete and force of nature--and his osmosis from a young hoop dreamer to product pitchman to the world, Halberstam is really examining intangibles like myth and legend, celebrity and fame, wealth and image, excellence and genius, race and style, the qualities of heroism and the pursuit of perfection. "That there had been even one Michael Jordan seemed in retrospect something of a genetic fluke," he writes, "and the idea that anyone would arrive in so short a span of time and do what he did both on and off the court seemed highly unlikely." But the phenomenon that is Jordan did just that.
Understanding, even admiring, what he did, how he did it, and what it means in a basketball context and a larger one is Halberstam's goal, and, despite Jordan's lack of cooperation--or maybe because of it--Halberstam's muscular prose and thinking scores powerfully. Yet, there is a wistfulness, in the end, to Playing for Keeps; the game doesn't seem as much fun and collegial as it used to for Halberstam, and Jordan, great as he may be, emerges with less of the historic grace exhibited by Jackie Robinson, Ali, and Arthur Ashe than with a quality that Halberstam deems the athlete-explorer "in terms of going beyond previously accepted limits of what was humanly possible, and somehow by dint of physical excellence and unmatched willpower, pushing those limits forward that much more." Dazzling, certainly, but not necessarily heroic. Playing for Keeps is also available on audiocassette. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
From The Breaks of the Game to Summer of '49, David Halberstam has brought the perspective of a great historian, the inside knowledge of a dogged sportswriter, and the love of a fan to bear on some of the most mythic players and teams in the annals of American sport. With Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls he has given himself his greatest challenge and produced his greatest triumph. In Playing for Keeps, David Halberstam takes the first full measure of Michael Jordan's epic career, one of the great American stories of our time. A narrative of astonishing power and human drama, brimming with revealing anecdotes and penetrating insights, the book chronicles the forces in Jordan's life that have shaped him into history's greatest basketball player and the larger forces that have converged to make him the most famous living human being in the world.Customer Reviews:
