Book Description
This established textbook continues to provide a comprehensive and stimulating introduction to marine ecological concepts and processes. Based on a wealth of international teaching expertise, An Introduction to Marine Ecology is written as a basis for an entire undergraduate course in marine biology or ecology. It covers the trophic, environmental and competitive interactions of marine organisms and the effects of these on the productivity, dynamics and structure of marine systems. The strength of the book likes in its discussion of core topics which, despite an increasing emphasis on more applied aspects, remains at the heart of the majority of courses in the subject. The authors maintain the tradition of clarity and conciseness set by previous editions, and the text is extensively illustrated with colour plates, photographs and diagrams. Examples are drawn from all over the world. In this edition, the scientific content of the text has been fully revised and updated. An emphasis has been placed on human impacts and completely new chapters have been added on fisheries, marine ecosystems, and human interference and conservation.

Customer Reviews:
PHENOMENALLY ORGANIZED & WELL PRESENTED, AN INTRODUCTION MASTERWORK.......2006-04-09
I bought this book about 4 or 5 years ago for a one-semester marine biology introductory course. It most definitely should be the book that introduces your typical biology student to the wonders of the marine environment. This is one of those books that as a student, you open up and page through before classes even begin, and it is one of those books that you won't want to sell back when the semester is over.
The information is understandable, well presented, well documented, and further explained by beautiful photographs, comprehensive charts, and accurate diagrams.
As a person who had only been to the actual ocean once before opening George Karleskint's Introduction To Marine Biology, I will gladly tell you that it is THE BOOK responsible for opening wide to me the wonders of the seemingly infinite marine environment. It is the reason why I feel comfortable with further study, and it is why I am still fascinated to this day with grasping the relationships we share with the Marine Environment. I have since studying this book, found myself evermore interested in undertaking a deep call to understanding and appreciating the beauty and sheer magnitude in variety of oceanic creatures. George Karleskint's "Introduction to Marine Biology" is a strong foundation from which to begin such an endeavor, from the huge and awe inspiring living Elkhorn coral, to the tiniest of unicellular marine organisms responsible for depositing the limited fuel that currently keeps economies of the world pumping, this book opens the mind wide and deposits a vast treasure trove of marine information.
For all of you students out there: good luck finding a used copy of this book, but what ever amount it is selling for now, it is truly worth the money. You can't put a financial value on the information you'll learn from this book.
"Introduction to Marine Biology" is a must have for marine biology instructors of all kinds, from the classrooms of Missouri, to the curious beachcomber living on a coastal seashore, and even the outdoor learning centers at a intertidal region near you.
Much better then these reviews suggest!.......2004-02-14
I've used this book with honors bio students - yes, some material needs additional clarification through lecture/labs - but the great joy of this text is the readability. Students enjoy reading this text - and as noted, the photography/printing is gorgeous. Piquing student interest motivates them to delve deeper into the material presented. Check it out!
The book is pretty good.......2002-02-14
I got the book for one of my classes and it seems to be pretty good so far. I am really pleased with the shipping. I received the book within three days. I am satisfied with the book and I am glad that I got the book at a price lower than the book stores price at my school.
Good intro for beginning students.......2002-01-17
This book is one of the better books out there for beginning students who are just learning about the ocean enviornment. There are inaccuracies (just like all books), yet where it makes it up is in the non technical jargon and easy reading. The graphics and pictures are easy to understand and well placed. I reviewed several books before choosing this one, don't let the other reviews hinder you, it is a solid book.
WEAK.......2001-12-07
This book is just weak. No substance and mediocre science. Great pictures, though. If that's what you are looking for, buy it. The book simply surveys or brushes over about every facet of "Marine Biology" on the ecological, evolutionary and organismal level. The book is nothing more than a basic/general introduction to the second broadest subject in biology, second to "General Biology". The only thing that separates it from a Gen. Bio book is its concentration on marine organisms and ecology, which isn't especially enlightening or unique.

Great Book.......2006-02-05
Matt was my prof for aquaculture and his book mimics his understandable method of teaching. It is readable, but not patronizing. He was a pioneer of aquaculture at Harbor Branch. Recommend this and his class for anyone interested in aquaculture

a great book to get a foot in the door in the aquaculture industry. i am currently an aquaculture student in western australia and as some of my lecturers call it, it is the bible for aquaculture students. A must have.

Book Description
After the first edition, published in 1982, established itself as the main introductory textbook on marine parasitology, this edition has been reviewed to take account of recent advances. Now there is an additional chapter on the structure of marine parasite communities as well as new sections on pollution, translocations of hosts and parasites and on the effects of parasites on the aquaculture of marine fish molluscs and crustacea. The chapters covering ecological, zoogeographical and economic aspects have also been significantly changed. Aimed particularly at students and research workers in parasitology, the book will also be of interest to ecologists, biologists concerned with zoogeographical problems, and to fish and fisheries biologists.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended!.......2005-07-11
This is a very nice book when we marine biologists need a refresher, or as a starting guide to those who wish to become one! I'm a big fan of the 'Chapter Overviews' at the end of each section.
Not sure why it's nearly $100.00 for a paperback book, though. 0.o
Book Description
Modelling of marine ecosystems is a rapidly developing branch of interdisciplinary oceanographic research. Introduction to the Modelling of Marine Ecosystems is the first consistent and comprehensive introduction to the development of models of marine ecosystems. It begins with simple first steps of modelling and develops more and more complex models. This step-by-step approach to increasing the complexity of the models is intended to allow students of biological oceanography and interested scientists with only limited experience in mathematical modelling to explore the theoretical framework and familiarize oneself with the methods. The book describes how biological model components can be integrated into three dimensional circulation models and how such models can be used for 'numerical experiments'.
The book illustrates the mathematical aspects of modelling and gives application examples. The tutorial aspect of the book is supported by a set of MATLAB programs, which are provided on an accompanying CD-Rom and which can be used to reproduce many of the results presented in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Decent Little Book.......2007-08-13
It is a Good intro, but It does have some problems. It is missing a bit of coverage on Costal Geology, Sustainability in Coastal Engineering, and it has MUCH MUCH to much emphasis on sand coasts.

Product Description
Small-Circle Jujitsu is the complete presentation of the system developed by Wally Jay. Bringing together elements from different arts, Jay s broad-based yet focused and effective system incorporates theories, principles and techniques essential to the development of every martial artist, whether a novice or a seasoned veteran. In this definitive instructional text, Jay covers the history of small-circle jujitsu; techniques for warm-ups, falling and resuscitation; details on weaknesses of the human body; locking techniques for wrists, fingers, arms and legs; throwing and choking techniques; and self-defense against strikes, chokes, body grabs and wrist grabs. Jay's system of small-circle jujitsu, based on 50 years of training and teaching experience, works on the premise summarized in his own words: It s not how much you can hurt a person in an altercation but how little you can hurt a person and still control him.
Customer Reviews:
This small book is a Complete Compendium .......2007-05-28
I wanted to learn more about Wally Jay's Small Circle Jujitsu. While the first 25% of the book has a number of pages that are very, very basic, I guess Jay needs to do the CYA thing. Nevertheless, I was disappointed with this aspect of the book. Give me the joint cranks, and let me work on those. Write another book filled with Philosophy, etc., . I assure you, I will buy that one too. Don't mix the focus.
As well, for people my age, there is a need for reading glasses. But reading glasses, and falling in the dojo don't go well together. So, I think that a larger book would be appropriate, e.g. 8.5" x 11". But, there are DVDs apparently. Maybe that would be better for me.
As for the remaining 75%, they were filled with techniques. Unlike some other reviewers, I WANTED to see more and more techniques. They were not problematic to follow, rather easy actually. There were several panels with exceptionally close photography for some techniques, and I would judge them as being required.
I was very pleased with this purchase. It has earned a permanent spot in my library - Self-Defense section. It has helped me with my learning and never ending quest to perfect my Combat Hapkido joint lock studies.
VERY MUCH WORTH THE PURCHASE !!!
Sort of a "technique catalog.".......2006-05-18
Not a bad book, but like many judo & jujutsu books, it takes a sort of "technique catalog" approach, as opposed to a tactical or principles-based approach. Yes, there is some discussion of theory/tactics, but it is not really integrated with the demonstrated techs.
May be a good reference book for Danzan/Kodenkan beginners.
Excellent brief volume on the system.......2006-04-12
This is an excellent brief work on Prof. Jay's system. Although the book is comparatively short, at least 50 and probably more like 100 techniques are shown. Techniques are divided between throws, wrist locks, elbow locks, leglocks, and finger locks. Vulnerable areas of the body and how to attack them are shown also.
Another nice feature is Prof. Jay discusses his overall theory of jujitsu and mechanical and martial principles involved, of which there are 10, which he goes into in some detail. Some of these will not be new to any experienced martial artist, such as the importance of balance, but others, such as his push-pull method of doing holds and locks, may be new.
Of course one can't learn a martial art from a book, but if you have some previous knowledge, this book is an excellent introduction and/or review of many of the techniques in Prof. Jay's system. The system I practice has enough overlap so that I found this book a great way to reference and learn somemore about it. I've also had the opportunity to attend two of Prof. Jay's seminars over the years, and would like to say they were great as I expected, and it was a honor to finally meet and get to learn from such a great teacher. And he has put a lot of that knowledge into this book.
Small Circle or Kodenkan Yawara ?.......2005-08-10
I did not find what I was looking for here. I was hoping to find an entire book on "Small Circle JuJitsu" and instead found a book that was 80-90% standard Kodenkan JuJitsu at maybe the Shodan Level and only 10-20% of what I would consider "Small Circle JuJitsu". I was 20% satisfied and left feeling empty. Maybe I just lack the experience to understand what his two books convey? But I don't think so!
Very well authored.......2005-07-01
I found this book to be very well authored. It shows what you need to know and gives a very detailed method of teaching you the same technique. Though I think the overuse of wrist locks to be inneffective the overall method is great and proven in competition by wally jay and his students (see the history provided in the book)

Excellent Book by the Master.......2002-06-19
This is great, complete how-to, book on Jujitsu. It is just as simple as that. Every page reveals something new.
Excellent, some of the best from Judo, JuJitsu and Aikido.......1999-05-25
If you are looking for a most effective means of self-defense that is easy to learn with maximum of effectiveness look no farther. Wally Jay, who is now 80+ years old has developed a martial arts system that combines Judo, JuJitsu and Aikido along with the usage of pressure points. I utlize this system to teach men and women self-defense, especially when I have a one seminar presentation. However though it is simple to teach, Grand Master Wally Jay's methods are some of the most advanced you will find anywhere. The book along with the video should be in everyones library who is a student of the martial arts or who wants to learn a system that is dependent upon skill not strength. I am ranked in four martial arts, Aikido, Karate, Judo and JuJitsu and hold the rank of Sandan in Judo and JuJitsu. John L. Herr United States Martial Arts Association
