Book Description
This book introduces the suite of techniques known as 'distance sampling', so-called because the common theme is the sampling of distances of objects from a line or point. The objects are usually animals or groups of animals ('clusters'), and the primary aim is to estimate their density or abundance in a survey area. In line transect sampling, the sampled distances are the shortest or perpendicular distance from a detected object to the line. It is the most widely used method for assessing the abundance of a wide range of terrestrial and marine animals. In point transect sampling, distances of detected objects from the sampled points are recorded. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to both techniques, and also describes several related techniques. 'Introduction to Distance Sampling' updates the 1993 book 'Distance Sampling', which was the first, and until now, only book devoted to the topic. The book is aimed at quantitative biologists and wildlife managers, and statisticians involved in wildlife monitoring programmes. Of particular significance in this update is the chapter on study design and field methods, which has been extensively rewritten and extended. New technologies such as laser range finders, theodolites and the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) are discussed, and advice is given on a wide range of survey methods. Analysis methods have also been generalized, through the use of various types of multiplier. Many exercises have been introduced, to make the book more useful to graduate students in wildlife and conservation management.Customer Reviews:

ASIN: 1405132639 |
Book Description
Introduction to Population Ecology is an accessible and up-to-date textbook covering all aspects of population ecology. Using botanical and zoological examples from the tropics to the tundra, this text discusses field and laboratory data to illustrate the fundamental laws of population ecology. Each chapter provides an overview of how population theory has developed, exploring single-species population growth and self-limitation, metapopulations, and a broad range of interspecific interactions including parasite -host, predator -prey, and plant -herbivore. Throughout, the mathematics is kept as simple as possible, using a careful step-by-step approach, and including graphs and other visual aids to help understanding. Sample simulations can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/rockwoodThis text is an essential introduction to population ecology for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in population ecology, including those with little mathematical experience.Customer Reviews:

An Introduction to Structured Population Dynamics (CBMS-NSF Regional Conference Series in Applied Mathematics)
J. M. Cushing Manufacturer: Society for Industrial Mathematics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0898714176 |
Book Description
Interest in the temporal fluctuations of biological populations can be traced to the dawn of civilization. How can mathematics be used to gain an understanding of population dynamics? This monograph introduces the theory of structured population dynamics and its applications, focusing on the asymptotic dynamics of deterministic models. This theory bridges the gap between the characteristics of individual organisms in a population and the dynamics of the total population as a whole. In this monograph, many applications that illustrate both the theory and a wide variety of biological issues are given, along with an interdisciplinary case study that illustrates the connection of models with the data and the experimental documentation of model predictions. The author also discusses the use of discrete and continuous models and presents a general modeling theory for structured population dynamics.

Population Ecology: An Introduction to Computer Simulations
Ruth Bernstein Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0470851481 |
Book Description
This carefully structured laboratory manual explores, by means of computer simulations, the key areas of population dynamics through time. Using simply presented exercises, it teaches the programming and analysing skills students need for creating their own models of population change. In this way, readers can contribute constructively to the conservation of endangered species and the control of pest species.Undergraduates and postgraduates taking courses in population ecology, behavioural ecology and conservation will find this an ideal accompaniment.
Download Description
Population Dynamics: An Introduction to Computer Simulations is a practical-based guide that teaches the student how to apply and modify the classical mathematical models of population dynamics. Assuming little in the way of advanced mathematical skills, the models used within population ecology and conservation biology are introduced through the use of simple computer simulations. Exercises are presented in as simple form as possible, enabling the student to focus on biology rather than mathematical procedures. New techniques and shortcuts are introduced gradually with commands carefully explained and defined in an extensive glossary. Key features: An introduction to population dynamics by means of computer simulations. Exercises based on MATLAB where no previous experience is required. Prepares students for programming and analyzing their own models of population change. Designed to accompany an undergraduate course in ecology, population biology and conservation.

Introduction to Plant Population Biology

ASIN: 063204991X |
Book Description
This completely revised, fourth edition of Introduction to Plant Population Biology continues the approach taken by its highly successful predecessors. Ecological and genetic principles are introduced and theory is made accessible by clear, accurate exposition with plentiful examples. Models and theoretical arguments are developed gradually, requiring a minimum of mathematics. The book emphasizes the particular characteristics of plants that affect their population biology, and evolutionary questions that are particularly relevant for plants. Wherever appropriate, it is shown how ecology and genetics interact, presenting a rounded picture of the population biology of plants.Topics covered include variation and its inheritance, genetic markers including molecular markers, plant breeding systems, ecological genetics, intraspecific interactions, population dynamics, regional dynamics and metapopulations, competition and coexistence, and the evolution of breeding systems and life history. An extensive bibliography provides access to the recent literature that will be invaluable to students and academics alike.
