Book Description
This is the exciting story of John Hunter's efforts to capture the shady headman of a gang of ivory poachers and smugglers.
Customer Reviews:
Strange..........2001-03-07
Hunter's Tracks is the story of an African white hunter who is involved in investigating and apprehending a middle man in the elephant poaching trade. Interspersed at frequent intervals are unrelated stories from Mr. Hunter's career. I found this to be a strange book on two accounts. 1) The main story is not as interesting as the stories which are mixed in, and Hunter agrees; 2) there is at least one story which I find to be a tall tale - a man killing two attacking leopards simultaneously with his bare hands. After reading "Hunter", the author's first book, which is superb, I was dissapointed with this one, although there are some good stories.
Hunter gets his man.......2000-09-10
This is the third of John Hunter's books that I've read. This was better in some ways than either *Hunter* or *White Hunter*. The book begins with he and the District Commisioner trying to stop an ivory poaching ring and the troubles they're having in running the ring leader to ground. What's very pleasing is that during the inevitable lulls that accompany "detective" work, some current happening in the case sparks Mr. Hunter's memory and he digresses to tell some amazing tale from his past. You'll just have to read the book to find out if they get their man.
The last chapter was a marvelous account of a safari that he led for an Indian Maharajah. Despite his high royal position and wealth, he was quite a sport; such as when a lioness scampered of with a probable record Thomson's gazelle.
Overall, it is a good read and Mr. Hunter has yet to disappoint.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for a novice........2007-10-01
Well written with great illustrations. Perfect aide to learn to cast. Could use a bit more detail on how to fish different types of flies, but great all-round guide.
Great overall fly fishing reference.......2007-09-09
Just starting to fly fish and this really fits the bill for my need to understand the terms and trade offs for this not-so-simple sport.
Outstanding book for the beginner........2007-08-25
Outstanding book for the beginner. Lots of color pics and diagrams plus tones of good information. I'm not an advanced fisherman so I will not comment about how it would be fore an advanced fisherman but I would say if I where to guess, it has plenty of info even for the none beginner.
In my novice experience, this is the best beginner's guide..........2007-06-27
In my novice experience, this is the best beginner's guide to fly fishing. I had ordered the Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide together with this book and in comparison I have to say that L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing is the better one. This book provides a much better introduction to fly fishing to novices like me, beginning from the basics. Although advanced fly fishers would probably be bored by the chapters that introduce the uninitiated to this sport/pastime, teaching them the bones, so to speak, I am sure this book has a lot of wisdom to impart to all enthusiasts.

The name L. L. Bean is acknowledged as being the tops in outdoor gear. This handbook justifiably bears that brand. A handsomely illustrated Text enhanced with photographs, Dave Whitlock's book covers the Zen of fly fishing, the craft or how-to, the strategies for various fish, how to "read" both fish and stream, and describes the art of tying various flies, and the latest in fly- fishing attire. Whitlock addresses both fresh- and saltwater considerations, the ethics of fishing, and has compiled an excellent list of publications and organizations of interest to the fisher.

Great book.......2007-06-03
This is a great book for a beginner (like me). I learned to cast using it. It has a great section on how to diagnose a bad cast and fix it. Plus, there is a short section on how to tie a fly.
Excellent Book to Start Your Fly Fishing.......2006-04-16
Whitlock's book is one of the best (the other being Rosenbauer's Orvis book) introductions to the sport of fly fishing. The Whitlock illustrations are always great, and the information is top-notch. You will find out everything you need from fly lines to fly rods to knots to basic flies. Don't be fooled by the "L.L.Bean" title--it nowhere promotes their products. An excellent book overall. As an added note, the L.L. Bean Fly-Fishing Bass Handbook is mostly a rehash of this book.
An "if you could have only One" book.......2005-05-03
This is Prime Whitlock - and he is good. If you bought only one "How to git 'er done" flyfishing book, ever, you couldn't go wrong with the L.L. Bean Flyfishing Handbook.
Excellent beginner's guide.......2005-03-02
After reviewing dozen of books, I decided to purchase and use this as my primary self-teaching tool. Surprisingly, I was able to learn the basics of casting from this book. I did get some instruction but was too eager to wait for that route. Once I showed up for a lesson, I was told my cast was quite impressive for a beginner; that was the result of this book. I also initially had qualms with the what-I-thought were overly complicated knots given as examples for connecting flies, leaders, tippets, etc. However, after losing several flies, leaders, and tippets from using other knots, I have followed the advice in the book with significantly more success. Overall, I would say there is no better introduction to this wonderful and satisfying hobby. After reading it, you can safely walk in to your local fly shop without feeling like an idiot. Highly reccomended. After reviewing dozen of books, I decided to purchase and use this as my primary self-teaching tool. Surprisingly, I was able to learn the basics of casting from this book. Good first book.......2003-11-09
This was my first introduction to fly fishing recommended by a local fly shop. Assembling tackle and tying basic knots is covered in-depth, with lots of great pictures. Casting is also covered pretty well and includes a problem and solution section.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this book. After reading it, I didn't feel like a total idiot when talking to our local fishing guru at the fly shop. I wish the book had more in the way of fishing tactics, like how to actually catch fish.

Excellent Instruction Manual!!!.......2002-08-02
This is one of the best instruction manuals, on any subject, period. The narrative is concise and easy to understand, and their are plenty of photographs to illustrate the narratives. I can't think of any other book that will get you started. I'm a beginner myself, and I've even taken a class with an instructor. This book was even more helpful! BUY IT!
Exceptional Instruction.......2002-05-22
After having taken a Fly Fishing course at which Macauley was an instructor, I purchased his book on fly casting.
Macauley manages to pour his knowledge out onto these pages with as much clarity as he presents in person. With wit and ease, he presents the reader with the tools to learn fly casting, if a novice; and to greatly improve existing skills if a seasoned fly fisherman...or woman.
It'd been an honor and deep pleasure to witness his graceful, pure zen-like casting in person, and a continued joy to pour over his advice on paper.
Enjoy this book and keep it amongst your key handbooks/guides to this great lifeslyle - Fly Fishing.
Excellent Fly Casting Instructions and Wonderful Photos.......2000-04-01
I just purchased this book last weekend and have found it to be an EXCELLENT instruction manual on fly casting. I've been flyfishing for a couple of years and have been frustrated by how difficult casting with a fly rod can be. This book has simple to follow casting techniques which are backed up by excellent photos. I have found the photo layouts particularly helpful since they show side by side photos showing poor technique and effective casting technique. I found that Mr. Lord's directions improved my casting distance and accuracy (in my backyard) after only one evening spent reading this book.
Each chapter in the book ends with a detailed descriptions explaining how to troubleshoot common casting casting problems, again supported by nice explanations and photos to illustrate the points being made.
Overall, I feel this was money well spent! This book is definately going to help make flyfishing more enjoyable and hopefully more productive...

Two audiences.......2005-01-06
This is a helpful book, but it suffers from the following problem: it is aimed at experienced fly fishers for trout who are bass neophytes on one hand, and experienced bass fishers who are new to casting flies on the other. Each of these groups will find some parts of the book relatively unhelpful. Otherwise it's a worthwhile read.
If fly fishing is your love, this book will make it better!.......1998-09-03
The line paid out smoothly through the guides, pulling the leader and fly forward to settle gently on the pond. Moments later the three pounds of large mouth bass had his breakfast and the fisherman a good morning tug of war. Scenes like this one come to mind as would be fly fisherman read L.L. Bean's "Fly Fishing for Bass Handbook" by Dave Whitlock. This easy reading guide to fly fishing covers equipment, casting, bass habits, flies, and bass fishing philosophy. As a seasoned trout fisherman I found this book enjoyable as well as informative. The book presents some very specific information when it comes to fly fishing for those large bass. If fly fishing for bass is on your list, then this book should be on your shelf.

L.L. Bean Fly Fishing for Stripped Bass Handbook.......2000-03-07
Good intro book to fishing for striped bass...certainly worth the price. Especially Where to Fish Chapter. Have found other books that go into more detail on certain topics.
Detailed techniques ina visually-attractive presentation.......1999-02-02
The book presents clear and informative instructions on where to find striped bass and how to catch them with fly fishing equipment. The illustrations and presentation are very well-done.
While I'm an experienced angler, I found some valuable insights into specific techniques and useful refreshers on things I used to know.
An excellent, concise book on flyrodding for stripers.......1998-12-17
This is a landmark book for saltwater fly fishing. I have fished with many people, including the author, and there is probably no one who has caught and released as many big striped bass as Brad Burns. He brings this knowledge to the page in a concise and no-nonsense way.
A great book.
