The story behind the publication of Classic Instruction is almost as good as the book itself, which is saying a lot, because the book is an instant classic, and a must for any serious golfer's bookshelf, regardless of skill level.
The great Bobby Jones left several boxes behind in his old law offices where they gathered dust through the decades until Martin Davis gained access to them while researching his massive pictorial biography Bobby Jones: The Greatest of Them All. In one of those boxes, he discovered the golfing equivalent of King Tut's tomb: more than 100 photographs of Jones demonstrating the game's fundamentals--grip, woods, irons, sand, chipping, putting, and the lost art of the stymie--with explanatory notes attached in Jones' hand. Jones used the photos in a limited series of film strips that he sold in the '30s, but never got around to writing the book. (Interestingly, the enduring instructional he did manage to write--Bobby Jones on Golf--is, solid as it may be, sadly lacking in illustration.)
Davis got the picture--and the pictures--and set out to rectify Jones' oversight. He immediately called Ben Crenshaw. Like Jones, two-time Masters' champion Crenshaw is a dedicated student of the game, and, in his extensive writings, an artful communicator. For Classic Instruction, he virtually collaborates with Jones. He carefully analyzes Jones' original text and the photos (many taken in detailed close-up); then, through added commentary attached to photographs of himself in similar swing positions and close-ups, Crenshaw updates the master to accommodate changes to the game and equipment that have evolved in the ensuing 60 years. In the end, the real revelation of Classic Instruction is how fundamentally sound and thoroughly modern Jones' game was. With a few minor adjustments here and there and a snappy new set of titanium heads with graphite shafts to replace his old hickories, there's no telling what kind of damage the young Bobby Jones could wreak on the PGA Tour today. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Drawn from a recently discovered archive, this landmark book is a treasure that, until now, golfers could only wish for. A dusty, overlooked box revealed more than 100 photographs of Bobby Jones demonstrating, step-by-step, all the fundamentals of golf; keyed to the photographs was a stack of yellow legal-pad pages filled with meticulous instructions handwritten by Jones himself. It's the next best thing to having a lesson with the great Bobby Jones. Ben Crenshaw's commentary with photos of him--updating Jones's basic instruction and illustrating differences in modern-day golf--makes this remarkable work even more valuable.
Classic Instruction offers precise close-ups of the swings, stances, and grips that took Jones to unprecedented victories during the 1920s, before the modern sand wedge had even been invented. Every detail is just as appropriate today, and with photographs of Crenshaw and his own commentary interspersed throughout, the book offers a unique look at the way the masters play golf. In some cases Jones and Crenshaw employ different approaches--especially in their putting, although both men are considered to be two of the finest putters who ever lived. These distinctions provide a fascinating contrast.
Jones played competitively more than 65 years ago, but the secrets to his game are as timely as ever. Preserving this wisdom for another generation of golfers, the release of
Classic Instruction is an unparalleled golf-publishing event. Printed in Italy, in five colors throughout, this rare find is every golfer's dream come true.

Great Book!.......2003-01-04
This is truly Classic Instruction. Not only does it give great basic fundamental instruction from "The Greatest" Bobby Jones but Ben Crenshaw shows the more modern swing as well.
Great photos of Bobby Jones and his techniques.
It's also a must have for Jones' unique lost writings finally in print for the world to see. Great for a golf book collection.
Elegant Book of An Elegant Golf Swing.......2001-04-28
Crenshaw is not only a successful pro but also he is a passionate student of golf's history. So he is the perfect one to compile this side-by-side analysis of Jones' swing.
Martin Davis who edits this book found a box of over 100 photos of Jones' swing. Along with these were handwritten notes explaining the photos.
So, on one page is the B&W of Jones, then parallel is the four-color swing of Crenshaw and his discussion of Jones' notes.
It is masterful, elegant and a true keepsake to any serious golf historian's collection. A must!
Excellent golf instruction and gift book.......2000-05-25
This is a very fine (and unusual) book on golf instruction. Using original photos and text from the old master Bob Jones, modern master Ben Crenshaw compares his swing and golf philosophy to Jones' swing and golf philosophy. This is also a very fine gift book--handsome and not too expensive. I recommend it highly to golf enthusiasts and neophytes alike.
Good.......1999-09-10
Very simple to understand

The only book on the golf swing you'll ever need.......2004-03-31
What a relief it is, as a golfer, to find a book like this!
Julius Boros' book is certainly lean (158 pages) but still manages to cover all the fundamentals of the golf swing without neglecting anything.
The bulk of the book is about the basic golf swing you will need to hit the ball consistently, and with good distance. He begins by explaining how spin affects ball flight, an invaluable section for the beginning golfer.
The rest of the book unfolds in a predictable, common sense approach. Grip, stance, ball position, etc. He then moves into swing mechanics and ends up with specialty shots (sand, difficult lies, etc) and what to look for when buying clubs. These end sections are not covered in much depth (for short game study, I recommend Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible), but are still instructive.
This is, without question, the single best instructional book on the golf swing that I've read, and I've read plenty. I think it's brevity is really helpful, as it allows anyone to learn about, or reacquaint themselves with the proper golf swing.
A real gem!
STILL A SENSATIONAL GOLF READ.......2004-03-02
Julius Boros was famous for his effortless golf swing. As a kid I remember watching him play. He would swing the club on a approach shot and I remember wondering whether his ball would make it to the green. Not to worry. The swing that was so easy was always hard enough to fill the bill. And Boros' accuracy was uncanny.
What could be more applicable in today's approach to golf. We see professionals swinging savagely at the ball with a variety of resulting shots. It's easy to believe that you need the same sort of swing for your game. Take another look.
In SWING EASY, HIT HARD Boros offers a simple, applicable, unpretentious look at the essentials of the easy, hard-hitting swing. This is a very short read with but everything that you will need. The grip, the takeaway, various stances for various clubs. If nothing else, you will come away with a more relaxed view of and approach to the golf swing that will improve your game and make every round much more enjoyable.

Swing Easy, Hit Hard.......2001-01-25
Excellent golf instructional book...the best I've ever read and applied. This will be the third time I've purchased the book. On two prior occasions, I loaned it to a golfing buddy, but never got it back. This time it will stay in my library. Great and simple illustrations, with clear and concise explanation that helps not only the beginner, but also the seasoned golfer who wants to correct flaws in the swing that tend to creep in every once and a while. I strongly recommend this book.
Excellent for beginners or getting back to basics.......2001-01-13
This book is extremely straight forward and is not cluttered with unintelligible lingo. It will help *any* golfer get the club face square at impact...and I believe that's what we're all searching for. The book has very good illustration which will help the golfer actually *see* what is being explained in the text. I have a copy handed down to me from my father and then purchased another following the reprinting. If you don't have a copy - get one! it's the best [money] you'll ever spend on your golf game.

Confusing Reviews.......2003-10-15
As a beginner, I was looking for a book that made instruction sound as simple as possible. I know how difficult golf is and have found some of the other instruction books way too scientific. They didn't make the game any easier. I read the previous reviews of this title and didn't know what to make of it as they were so diverse. Having now read the book I agree with those that rate it highly and totally disagree with the guy who gave it one star. I mean, he didn't even read it and seemed to be talking about an entirely different book. A book called 'Good Golf Made Easy'is obviously about instruction and not the rules of the game which he seemed to think. Anyway, I really enjoyed it and found the concepts pretty easy to grasp. It's not sophisticated and probably won't win any awards for writing but it has definitely helped my game. I'm going to supplement what I learnt in this book with lessons from my local professional but GGME has definitely given me a good start.
Confused.......2003-09-23
At the time of this writing, the only other two reviews of this book refer to "instruction" and how this book helped them improve thier play. However, unless I missing something in the title, this book is supposed to be about the "rules" of golf...not how to "play" golf. What gives? Should someone looking for a book on the rules of golf consider this tome or is it beter suited to someone desiring to learn the game? Either the book title is misleading or the folks who reviewd this book read something entirely different. Perhaps someone from the editorial staff at amazon could clarify this. The 1-star rating of this book is only posted to fulfill the requirement that one must rate a book before posting a review. I haven't read this book, but was only trying to read other reviews to help make a buying decision. In fact, this could be is a great rules book OR a great instruction book. It would be nice to know which it is.
simple, basic - perfect for the beginner........2002-11-22
I don't think the author would make any claim about this book being suitable for all golfers. Those who have been playing for years probably wouldn't get much out of it. But for people who are relatively new to the game I reckon it is perfect. I expected golf instruction books to be far too complicated for me but this makes the game sound relatively straightforward. And since buying this book not only has my enjoyment level risen, I have also broken 90 for the first time. If it's science you're after, don't get it. If it's simple, basic tips that avoid 'paralysis by analysis', which so many of my golfing friends suffer from, then this book will prove very helpful.
good golf made easier- tony dear.......2001-05-09
i have a lot of golf instruction books and this one i often go back to cause its simple and has very good little drills to keep your swing on track or to feel certain movements.great for total beginers and for double figure handicaps.

For improving the all-around game of every level of golfer—in which excellent shotmaking technique takes precedence over big swings and the latest equipment fads—there is no better teacher than Ravielli, who worked closely with such pros as Tom Watson, Bobby Jones, Sam Sneed, and Ben Hogan to offer the most lucid principles and easily explained demonstrations of shotmaking. Indeed, when Ben Hogan and Ravielli published Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf, it quickly became one of the bestselling instruction books of all time.
In this intriguing book, Christopher Obetz has drawn the best illustrations from the complete archive of Ravielli's work to best illustrate grips, swings, stances, special and trouble shots, and intentional slices and hooks that can be used for a lifetime of successful golf. Beautiful to observe, anatomically perfect, enduring in both style and approach, Ravielli's drawings will reward every golfer with perhaps the clearest and most matter-of-fact understanding of the principles of the golfing body at work. Amplifying the lessons in each case are comments by some of today's leading professional players and teachers.
A refreshingly welcome contribution to today's golf instruction library and a magnificent contribution to golf history, this book is destined to become a classic.

What's new.......2006-03-09
Went through the book in a couple of minute and didn't learn anything new or helpful. Book slims over different shots and setups but nothing that you can analyze and get much guideness. Would recommend a different way.

Customer Reviews:
Need help with your swing? .......2007-10-07
Then buy this book. Ernie does a great job of taking you through the basic stages of the golf swing. Then he shows you how to use your new swing on your irons and then wedges. He even teaches you to fade and draw the ball before he finishes up. It's not too technical as some books can get and is explained in easy to understand language. The best part is the illustrations. Nearly every swing stage has pictures taken from multiple angles to drive home the points. Buy this book and see your golf score go down.
Ernie writes from the perspective of the Big Guy.......2007-08-08
Ernie writes from the perspective of the Big Guy. Big Guy's -- over 6'2" and 200 pounds -- need to control their power and weight more than they need to generate distance.
A Big Guy would find no better place to start than with Ernie's book. I recommend reading once carefully, and then returning to the chapters every once in a while, as you work on the different aspects of your game.
One caveat: Since Ernie advocates keeping the club low to the ground for as long as possible on the back swing, and then "sweeping" the ground during the downswing, you will have an initial "loss of distance" if you emulate Ernie's swing. Also, Ernie suggests a slower tempo than others do, so this will also cut down on your distance.
With practice, however, you will learn how to get more weight behind the ball and more of a left shoulder turn, which should bring back the distance.
The point is that you will start hitting more fairways, and you will get less "wild."
Excellent Book that helped me with my pitch........2006-12-15
I like this book because of its approachable format. It has clear explanations that are well illustrated with photos of Ernie in the various stages of each swing. The book separates the woods, long irons, short irons and pitching. In this sense it is really an explanation of the finer points of four different swings.
I have put into practice the knowledge I gained concerning pitching; an area of golf that has been particularly troublesome for me. He explains that it is really a very different swing to the full swing, and gives a clear, rational and effective insight into the pitch. Finally my short game has come good and I can see the way forward in the finesse pitch that will give me a new weapon under 100 yards from the pin.
The full swing is covered very well with plenty of clear, realistic and logical advise. I find I am thinking about the long and shot shots with much more understanding of the interdependence of the body turn, swing path of the club and unleashing of power at impact.
Ernie has one of the most, if not the most, elegant swings in golf. I am sure that the effortless appearance of his swing is a result of extraordinary co-ordination and effieciency of movement. I hope that my swing may someday look fluid and clean like Ernie's and recommend this book to anyone who wants to model their game on his swing.
Whilst I can not speak as an expert on golf, I would imagine this book would be as valuable for single figure golfers as it is for a high handicappers like me.
This book is better than many of the bestselling golf instruction books and DVD's I have read, or seen, because it is not overly technical.
I highly recommend it.
One of the best golf books around........2006-04-30
I've been at this wonderful game of golf for over 10 years and of all of the books I've read this is, by virtue of its refreshingly sound simplicity, the absolute best. What I like is that if doesn't follow the convention of the vast majority of instructional books out there that expect the reader to have a million swing thoughts to get the job done. Guys like Peltz and Ledbetter do offer great advice but Ernie Els points to the most valuable aspects of building a swing and hammers and hammers the point home to the reader on how essential they are. These are why Ernie Els has THE sweetest golf swing on the tour. It is a work of art. It's not the controlled power swing of Tiger who's textbook swing is anything but voilent, but one that is as deliberate as it is precise. It is the result of paying attention to the basics. In this book, El's points to the importance of fundementals. I mean, he REALLY emphasizes their importance as the foundation to building a great, sound swing. It may come across as oversimplified but the advice he gives on grip, rhythm, posture, and aim is put forth in an almost Zen-like fashion. Readers are expected to pay attention to these seemingly mundane fundamentals everytime they step up to the ball. According to Els, the rest will follow from there and after following his sage advice, I've found that he is absolutely right. Now the reader that complained that the advice is not easy to implement is wrong. He is missing the point of the book. El's is not trying to tell you how to swing like him, he's telling how you can build your own "classic" swing but the way I see it, you have to decide if you are patient, as well as disciplined, enough to do what he tells you. Trust me, it worked miracles with my game and it most definitely can with yours.
excellent tips.......2005-01-31
This is an informative and well-written book on how to build a classic golf swing. It covers every club in the bag and gives the reader some excellent tips to develop a classic and consistent swing.

A Brilliant Synthesis of Swing Books.......1997-08-21
The author, an attorney in Canada, has read and compared all of the great golf instructionals of the past century and has brought them all together, complete with citations, into an easy-to-understand book of only 7 lessons which, taken as a whole, will teach you to swing like the professionals. I highly recommend this book for golfers who are becoming serious about what turns out to be a remarkably complicated process -- striking a golf ball
