Book Description
The central theme of Green Plants is the astonishing diversity of forms found in the plant kingdom. The book is arranged according to generally accepted classification schemes, beginning with prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae and moving through mosses, liverworts, fern allies, ferns and gymnosperms to flowering plants. Copiously illustrated throughout, it provides a concise account of all algae and land plants, with information on topics from cellular structure to life cycles and reproduction. The authors include newly emerging information on features of plants known only as fossils. This new edition has been completely updated to reflect current views on the origin of the major plant groups.

Great upper-level book, but not for an intro course.......2002-06-23
I was needing a book for an introductory botany course, covering plant evolution and structure. This book is too advanced for a course like that, but would be excellent for a 300 or 400 level course after students have the basics of evolution, taxonomy, and plant structures down. As a grad student, this is a text I'd love to have as a resource and will use as a reference text in my course...but it's too dry and the language is at too high a level for beginners. I am recommending this text to a professor of a botany class I was TA'ing for on Comparative Plant Anatomy, a 300 level course. So...if you want to be a botanist, grab it. If you want to teach plant anatomy and origins after an introductory botany course, this is perfect (best I've seen for the price, too!). If you want to teach an AP Botany course to high school students that only have a high-school biology background with no botany experience....not a good choice except as a strong reference. Book explains well, has excellent black-and-white diagrams, follows a thorough and logical pattern of evolution, but simply uses terminology too advanced for a lower-level course. They have trouble with the concepts of transcription and translation, much less page 103, "The passage of materials into the sporophyte is entirely through the apoplast since in all archeoniates the boundary between the two phases lacks plasmodesmata." Clear to me....but not to a beginner. I can't stress how good this book is for an advanced course or a serious botanist/taxonomist/plant geneticist/etc. GREAT upper-level/professional text!!!!!
Basic botany text........2001-04-30
This is a short book on plant diversity. There are lots of B/W drawings and diagrams. The book can be used in botany classes or for amateurs who want to learn more about plants.

Book Description
Natural populations of plants show intricate patterns of variation. European botanists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries used this variation to classify different "kinds" into a hierachy of family, genus, and species. Although useful, these classifications were based on a belief in the fixity of species and the static patterns of variation. Darwin's theory of evolution changed this view; populations and species varied in time and space and were part of a continuing process of evolution. The development of molecular techniques has transformed our understanding of microevolution and the evolutionary history of the flowering plants. This revised, extended edition describes the historical background to plant variation studies and considers the remarkable insights that molecular biology has recently given into the processes of evolution in populations of cultivated, wild and weedy species; the threats of extinction faced by many endangered species and the wider evolutionary history of the flowering plants as revealed by cladistic methods.

Book Description
When the 1998 International Prize for Biology was awarded for outstanding research in the biology of biodiversity, the honor went to Harvard University Professor Otto T. Solbrig, one of the authors of this volume. As the world becomes increasingly aware of the crisis and urgency of conservation in biodiversity, this book could not be more timely. Understanding of the biodiversity of plants, animals, and humans remains incomplete, but new multidisciplinary approaches - phylogenetic, ecological, molecular developmental, and genetic - have revealed essential underlying aspects of the science. These and other breakthroughs are presented in the papers collected here from scientists at the forefront of biodiversity research. While the focus of their work is on the evolutionary and ecological implications of biodiversity, basic concepts and data also are provided. The book is thus a valuable source both in research and in the utilization and conservation of biodiversity.

Book Description
Long typecast as the hotrods of the sea--fast but dangerous--modern cruising multihulls actually are among the safest and most comfortable cruising sailboats available. Modern multihulls offer significant advantages over single-hull sailboats: They sail faster, have more living space, they're more comfortable, more stable, they can sail safely in much shallower water, and, because their stability comes from widely spaced hulls and not from tons of lead hung off the keel, they don't sink. Given the ultimate disaster, which would you choose: A capsized yet habitable boat, floating awash, or a self-righting boat sitting at the bottom of the ocean? And multihulls are fast. A typical weekend cruiser's circle of operations might double if he switches to a multihull. A transatlantic voyage might be cut by a third. No less an organization than the U.S. Navy decided that applications requiring an extremely steady platform at sea were best suited to, of all things, a catamaran.
The Cruising Multihull supplies the reader with all the latest information about design, construction, rigs, seamanship, safety, and a point-by-point rebuttal of the "accepted wisdom" concerning multihull dangers. It will help you decide whether a multihull is right for you; which multihull--cat or tri--is best for your needs; whether you should build one yourself, have one built, or buy one off the rack. And, of course, The Cruising Multihull shows you how to get the most from your boat.
"I don't know of a more thorough survey of modern cruising multihulls than this book. For strangers to these boats who want to know more about them, as well as for multihull sailors eager to learn from a capable, articulate designer and sailor with his own point of view, I enthusiastically recommend The Cruising Multihull."--John Rousmaniere
"Finally, a multihull voice which does not proselytize. Instead, logic and information pack the pages of Chris White's . . . The Cruising Multihull."--WoodenBoat
Customer Reviews:
Must read for people considering purchase of a multihull.......2007-03-12
Chris White's designs are certainly among the best, if not the best, in the world for performance multihulls. His book does a great job of explaining the various factors related to safety and performance in multihull sailing vessels.
The book is a bit dated and could stand a re-write to bring it up to modern standards, but I still give it a 5 for the excellent coverage of the material presented. I'd like to see some discussion of the idea of placing two masts, one in each hull discussed. I'd also like to hear his opinions of the Wylie Cat monohull flexible masts.
I'd also like to see more discussion of his own designs and his performance competitor the Gunboat series of catamarans.
Finally, I'd like to see more analysis of the various production catamarans compared to each other and mono-hulls in various wind conditions, and citations of the situations where mono-hulls perform better--for example sailing upwind is less than 10 knots of wind.
Basically, I feel Catamaran design still has a way to go in the area of rig design, while the use of high tech composites is 95% perfected.
A well-written book but not a one-stop shop.......2007-03-02
I bought this book as I am considering switching from a monohull to a multihull and I wanted to learn a little more about the differences between the boats. This book was well-written - the author's style is easy to read, clear and concise. However it didn't entirely scratch where I itched.
The author covers a good deal of ground in his book and I particularly liked his comparisons between the safety records of monohulls and multihulls. In many cases there aren't accurate figures but he worked with what was available to show that multihulls are no more dangerous than monohulls - in fact the reverse. And with the major danger that exists - capsize - he devotes a large amount of space to how to prepare for capsize, how to deal with it etc. This was a helpful, if slightly daunting, section with a lot of common sense. Yes, multihulls capsize but they don't sink and you can survive in one for quite a while if well prepared. And they don't capsize THAT often.
He also gave a significant amount of space to multihull designs, although again I think some of this information was a little out of date (an expected problem with an older book). The author definitely has his own opinions about what's good and what isn't and he speaks from the position of someone who likes to sail fast rather than potter about on a cruise (although a lot of other multihull owners, I imagine, prefer the relaxed cruising). He has designed a couple of boats himself and I found myself rather irritated at how often he showed us examples of his boats as proof of various statements about design - I felt he sometimes had a rather one-track mind about boat building.
My disappointment with this book, and the reason that I've only awarded it 4 stars rather than 5, is that he doesn't say a great deal about the handling differences between multihulls and monohulls and how they behave differently for passengers. A section on marina handling techniques, for example, would have been very useful as there are very different skills required here. Equally I didn't find anything that told me about the different methods one might use under sail to make the most of the multihulls' strengths - apart from speed, which he wrote about a lot (the use of drogues and parachute anchors to slow you down, for example). It was a good read and covered a fair bit of ground (including techniques to build your own boat - I wasn't too sure of the value of this information for your average reader) but it didn't answer all the questions I had so I will have to research a little further.
pleasantly factual.......2006-08-23
Most multihull books seem to feel it is necessary to constantly fight the battle of multi verus mono. While there is a certain amount of comparison it is blessedly short and factually accurate in Mr White's book. It is a usefulll book in understand principles of sailing and construction of multihulls.
Intelligence really helps sometimes..........2006-01-12
Multihulls are a great style of yacht - we have an older 42 ft cat and love it. It has JUST (2 days ago) survived a category 3 cyclone while on dry dock. Some of the newer boats just blew apart.
This is a great book and worth keeping unless you are the type of person who gets carried away with flashy interiors and shiny buttons and cares little about what really matters - quality design and knowing how to use a boat.
Buy it and keep it.......2006-01-04
This and Gavin LeSuers book (Multihull seamanship)are two definite keepers. I have reread Whites book time and again, it is probably the best book on the subject, certainly more value than Kanters book. I dont know chris white but I do thank him for his efforts in this book.

New For The Third Edition: Power Multihulls!

Worthwhile Purchase.......2005-12-04
While I agree to certain extent with the other reviewers, you would have to purchase many magazines and other types of literature to collect this much model specific multihull sailboat information. This book used in conjuction with multihulldynamics.com can be a great resource in comparing one mulithull to another regarding performance and stability.
Superficial - An infomercial in book form.......2004-06-18
This book touches very superficially on the standard topics found in books on sailing and seamanship. In fact, the first 115 pages appear to have been taken from the introductory paragraphs of chapters from other books and given the authors list that is probably the case. The information is so superficial it is not educational. At the end of each text chapter an individual or a business is recommended to the reader for further help in that area. The next section of this book is advertising that includes color pictures of boats and accessories, information that is readily found in sailing magazines. The final section that starts at page 128 and goes to page 471 is a two page per boat general information and specifications that are clearly provided by the manufacturer. No effort is made to evaluate or categorized any boat for its appropriate use, i.e. inland water, coastal or blue water use, but are all categorized as a `cruising' multihull. This book is essentially a $21 catalog or directory of multihull boats. It is an infomercial in book form.
There are better books for your $$.......2003-10-15
This book was a disappointment. See A.Amatori's 21 March 2003 review - I concur with it completely. Wish I would have read that review before purchasing.
On the plus side, it does provide an overview of many of the currently produced multihulls in case you want basic info.
Far better books are Chris White's "The Cruising Multihull" and Charles Kanter's "Cruising in Catamarans".
The Cruising Multihill / Sailors' Multihull Guide.......2003-08-31
I purchased these two books together and would not do so again as they cover pretty much the same ground.
A major section of "Sailor's Multihull Guide" is taken up with description of a large number of new and expensive sailboats. For my needs this is pointless.
I find "The Cruising Multihull" to be the more useful of the two books.
More Than A Reference Book.......2003-05-20
"Sailor's Multihull Guide is rather more than simply a reference book or index - it will guide the prospective
buyer or new sailor through every step on the way to reaching their dreams, even throwing in a few chapters on basic sailing and handling techniques." SAILING/SA
Yachting magazine South Africa
Book Description
Multihulls offer sailors expansive comfort, impressive speed, precise maneuverability, and, in the case of trailerables, easy storage and transportability. No wonder boat buyers and charter clients have begun migrating toward cats and tris in unprecedented numbers.
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals taps into the essence of multihull sailing and gives readers a clear and concise analysis of these largely unfamiliar boats. Chapters one through four provide the skills sailors need to get trailerable multihulls safely into the water, rigged and sailing. Larger, cruising catamarans and their unique sailing and handling needs are addressed in chapters five through eight.
The material in this book was developed by the American Sailing Association's Multihull Committee for use in classes throughout North America. Students will learn quickly and efficiently from Multihull Cruising Fundamentals' "no nonsense," step-by-step format. The knowledge and skills found in this text will prepare sailors to more fully enjoy the most forward-looking boats on today's pleasure boat market.

Text Book for Catamaran Class.......2005-09-21
I purchased this book as the required text for a two day catamaran class I am taking. It is well written and an easy read with some good tips and suggestions. It covers both trailerable size trimarans, catmarans and cruising sized Cats. As it's title says, it is a fundamentals book.
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals: The Official American Saili.......2003-09-06
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals is a nice book to get sailors familiar with the idiosyncracies of handling mid- to large size multihulls.
CATAMARANS OFFSHORE,a new book by Gregor Tarjan, which will be published in 2004, will continue where Rick White has left off.
Too fundamental, better choices out there........2002-12-12
This book was a complete let down for me. A very shallow and thin book with not a lot of useful information in it. It is simply too watered down and should be renamed "beginers basics for learning to sail your folding trimaran" rather than trying to pretend it tackles the much deeper subjects of cruising. For someone looking to learn the basics I would suggest a better combination of reading Royce's Sailing Illustrated, and then take a look at The Cruising Multihull by Chris White. You will get a lot more useful information both on the beginner and advanced end from that combination than this very weak book gives.
Experienced multihull fan review.......2001-11-26
This book is intended for people who know very little about sailing, and even less about multihulls.
If you have sailing and multihull experience this book is not for you.
Get this!.......2000-06-11
At last an intelligible multihull book that you can read & understand almost instantly . Full of practical knowledge and clearly written - you don't need to be a 5-10 yrs skipper or have a PhD in astrophysics to understand this lucid book. There are plenty of clear diagrams, safety aspects are well covered but the authors remain enthusiastic and balanced re multi vs monohull. Thouroughly recommended as an introductory text and for existing catamaran owners!

The cruising lifestyle at its finest and simplest.......2000-11-07
Cruising is Contagious is a collection of essays, anecdotes, humorous vignettes and just plain good sailing sense that will inspire all, from the full time live aboard (and those aspiring to be) to the day sailor. The selection varies from straightforward tips on weathering a hurricane, in a first hand narration entitled, "How We Survived Hurricane Erin," to an insightful and informative travelogue on the Kanters' cruise to Cuba. All throughout the book are humorous stories of lessons learned from experiences such as having pets and plants on board, and more sober reflections on safety and prudence while sailing. It's a great book designed to get you into the spirit of cruising. I enjoyed reading about the cultural differences found in our neighboring Carribean countries, like Bahamas and Cuba. I also found useful Corinne's writings on the full time live aboard lifestyle, and her ideas on how to finance the cruising life. Even more valuable to me are Chuck and Corinne's common sense approach to sailing and safety, demonstrated in almost every story. Multihull sailors will also find useful Chuck's ideas on catamaran sailing, which includes good ideas on setting anchors. Chuck and Corinne's chatty conversational writing style further adds to the personality of this book, which reads as if you're just having coffee with them in the cockpit of their catamaran, La Forza.

The book for exploring cruising Catamarans.......2002-06-18
This is the definitive book on exploring the miriad of cruising catamarans of all sizes in 1 book. This reference book lists most technical details and a short review for each cat with pictures for some popular models and diagrams for the rest. I have been reading this book for years and anxiously await the new revision due out soon...
The Multihull Bible.......1999-03-30
Frankly, this is the only book that covers all the currently available (as of publication date) cruising multihulls. Including production boats, semi-custom and stock designs. If you think you might be interested in a multihull for your next boat this is THE book to start with period. I found this book invaluable in sorting through the bewildering array of multihull boats and builders out there. Whenever a broker or ad had a Super Duper XYZ I was able to look in this book and figure out what it was or make a pretty good guess based on the current XYZ version. Would I buy again? Absolutely!

Terrific book concerning catamarans.......2007-01-05
Chuck Kantor is a highly recognized expert on sailboats and especially catamarans. From a been there, done that and the knowledge from a long term surveyor perspective, this book is a definative volume on catamaran sailboats. Of particular interest is Chuck's analysis of a huge number & range of production catamarans. The book is loaded with tips & techniques for existing cat sailors, but is especially useful to the monohull sailor thinking of moving to a more comfortable, spacious boat or the person new to sailing who are looking for a first boat.
