An excellent ecological field book.......2000-06-19
This guide has many techniques ideal for sampling many (and possibly any) habitat type. The guide includes field sheets for easy data entry, equations to obtain key ecological standards, plus a detailed description of the many techniques with cited references. Simply a handy tool and a "must have" when working in a field of so many different sampling techniques for different habitats.

Book Description
This manual summarizes the accumulation of information and knowledge of environmental microbiology in a single source. It details the natural fate of microorganisms in the environment as well as the intentional attempts to eliminate from the environment microorganisms that are pathogenic to humans or to plants and animals. The basic principles of environmental microbiology and general analytical methodologies, common across the range of the environments covered, are presented first. The core sections are structured with regard to the type of environmental medium being discussed. This landmark effort defines the study of environmental microbiology as we know it today and serves as an essential contribution to the literature. Customer Reviews:
Wow!!!.......2002-06-25
One word describes this book - wow! This book is a great source of information for everybody that is seriously interested in environmental microbiology. The wealth of information given in this book is divided into 98 "short stories", most of them on average 10 pages long, each written by a different scientist. Even though the book is presented in a very scientific manner, it reads surprisingly easy, although the reader should have some knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry. This is not a textbook! Those of you who are looking for a pretty picture book should look elsewhere. There are no fancy appendices or glossaries, no CD-ROM, just an index. Pictures and graphs are held to a minimum and are used for the more complex concepts only. At the end of each chapter, a bibliography invites to further exploration of the particular topic. Here are the main sections of the book: 1. Introduction to environmental microbiology, 2. General methodology, 3. Water microbiology in public health, 4. Aquatic environments, 5. Soil, Rhizosphere, and Phyllosphere, 6. Subsurface and landfills, 7. Aerobiology, 8. Biotransformation and biodegradation. In conclusion, this book has quality and substance, just as you would expect from a book published by the ASM.

Book Description
Agroecology is defined as the application of ecological concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable food systems. Offering step-by-step guidance for structured investigation, Field and Laboratory Investigations in Agroecology, Second Edition reviews ecological concepts and principles in an agricultural setting and provides in-depth, practical experience. From background information to procedures and suggestions for writing up the results, the book covers 24 different agroecological investigations, each designed to provide all the information needed to plan and execute experimental or comparative studies. It deals with how an individual plant responds to the environment, how environmental factors are measured and characterized, and how environmental factors affect individual plants. The manual investigates how populations of organisms act in agroecosystems, focuses on the level of the community, and explores the between-species interactions of the organisms that make up crop communities. Examining whole farms or systems within farm boundaries, investigations touch on the complexity with which farmers manage agroecosystems. In the last section, the book addresses components of the food system at a local level. Comprising both basic and complex topics, Field and Laboratory Investigations in Agroecology, Second Edition presents a broad scope of issues relevant to agroecology today. This edition facilitates hands-on, experiential learning that involves close observation, creative interpretation, and constant questioning of findings.

Book Description
Microbial ecology is one of the fastest growing fields of microbiology. This practical volume is the bench and field scientist's guide to well-established techniques for investigating microbial communities. Both for biologists just entering the field and for experienced researchers wishing to explore new areas, this book provides the theoretical background, detailed protocols, and tips from experts for working in this field. Chapters on bacteria with interesting metabolic traits are augmented with chapters on molecular techniques, lipid analysis, and appropriate sampling techniques. The final section includes up-to-date information on biofilm development and study, the science and practice of bioremediation, modeling of biological systems (including the most useful statistical parameters), and the study of phylogenetics.
Customer Reviews:
Extensive and comprehensible!.......2001-06-28
The book 'Techniques in Microbial Ecology'edited by R.S.Burlage et.al. consists of two parts. The first part describes microorganisms of different physiological groups such as nitrifiers, sulfur-oxidizers, methanotrophs, methylotrophs etc. In addition each chapter gives information about identification, cultivation and media. Not only bacteria are described, there are also chapters about fungal communities, protozoa and bacteriophages. The second part deals with environmental techniques generally applicable to environmental research. These techniques comprise sampling, enumeration, lipid analysis, isolation of nucleic acids and molecular techniques. Special topics are discussed in the third part of this book. These topics are biofilms, bioremediation, statistics, numerical classification, all important issues in environmental microbiology. Each chapter is written by a well-recognized microbiologist, such as R.S.Hanson, R. Colwell or D.White. The book is comprehensive, comprehensible and very well structured. The reference list at the end of each chapter gives valuable information for further reading. I had a lot of fun reading this book, because it contains valuable information necesssary for hands-on microbiologists. Overall, I highly recommend this book for every environmental microbiologist.

Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know for you first bike tour.......2007-06-11
I am an intermediate level cyclist. I cycle for pleasure, but had not biked more than 40 miles at the time I purchased this book. I bought this to prepare for my first touring excursion (a measly three day trek through MA, NH, and Southern ME). This book has good insight into all the basics - what to pack, what to wear, what to eat, and, perhaps most importantly, how to train. I would recommend it for anyone thinking about touring.
pretty weak.......2006-12-04
This book comes up well short of containing, "Everything you need to know." It might be OK for someone new to biking in general. For instance, it reviews shifting, braking, and basic bike accessories, such as bike shorts and helmets. In fact, most of the book is a recycled hodge podge of general biking info padded with an unbelievable amount of filler. It contains inane questionaires and advice lists that are kind of amusing, but not really helpful. Is Easy Rider your favorite movie? Than they have the tour for you! Trying to hook up on a bike trip? Than don't ask, "Is that a banana in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" I kid you not. This book devotes several pages describing how to do a pushup, a pull-up, and a crunch. With all this fluff, there is very little room leftover for any touring specific information, and rarely gets beyond common sense advice (i.e., pack light). A whole chapter vaguely describes 10 dream bike trips (#10 being your own back yard). This chapter could have been so much better. In the end, it seems like very little effort was put into making this a quality book on bike touring. I was profoundly disappointed. Much better, in my opinion, is, "The Essential Touring Cyclist." If you are interested in self-supported touring, "Adventure Cycle-Touring," is probably the best I have seen, and covers camping, specific brands of touring bikes, etc., etc.
A usefule tool for all riders.......2005-04-06
I found this book to be the most comprehensive, helpful and informative guide for the novice as well as experienced rider. Wether you are looking to start up or tune up their touring experience, I highly recommend it. Also, anyone who may be getting ready to start training or is considering purchasing equipment for some touring. It will give you helpful information regarding the purchase of your equipment, planning trips and even training.
