5 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of issues facing modern societies.......1998-07-23

This book presents, in clear and easy to understand language, a nearly complete summary of the problems and issues of technology that face a modern society. Issues ranging from alternative energy sources and traffic theory to the problems of feeding the world's growing population are addressed. This book allows one to approach such modern questions as "Should I have airbags in my car?" or "How dangerous is the nuclear power plant in the next town?" from a knowledgeable standpoint. Many worked examples are included. Reference lists and problems are included at the end of each chapter. Although written as a textbook, this is an excellent (and entertaining) resource for the general interested reader. (Disclaimer: I am a former student of one of authors, but never took the class for which this book was written.)

    Book Description

Howard T. Odum possessed one of the most innovative minds of the twentieth century. He pioneered the fields of ecological engineering, ecological economics, and environmental accounting, working throughout his life to better understand the interrelationships of energy, environment, and society and their importance to the well-being of humanity and the planet.

This volume is a major modernization of Odum's classic work on the significance of power and its role in society, bringing his approach and insight to a whole new generation of students and scholars. For this edition Odum refines his original theories and introduces two new measures: emergy and transformity. These concepts can be used to evaluate and compare systems and their transformation and use of resources by accounting for all the energies and materials that flow in and out and expressing them in equivalent ability to do work. Natural energies such as solar radiation and the cycling of water, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are diagrammed in terms of energy and emergy flow. Through this method Odum reveals the similarities between human economic and social systems and the ecosystems of the natural world. In the process, we discover that our survival and prosperity are regulated as much by the laws of energetics as are systems of the physical and chemical world.

        Book Description

A vivid rendering of the educational, social, and physical environment of two elementary schools in contrasting socioeconomic settings, this book calls attention to the importance of place in human lives and learning. The author draws from systematic observations conducted over a three-year period, presenting the schools and the persons who inhabit them via a fictionalized narrative. This treatment allows readers to understand how the material conditions of poverty and wealth inform children's worldview without compromising the identity of the study participants. Written by an eminent African-American professor of architecture and urban planning who is an outspoken advocate for social justice, this book is a rare gem.

        Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Current events related to energy policy skyrocketing gasoline prices, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, the Kyoto Protocol s enactment, passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and the influence of recent Gulf Coast hurricanes on energy supplies and prices demand innovative approaches towards conceptualizing the relationship between energy and American society.

This book takes on a central quandary in the study of energy and environmental policy: What myths continue to exist in American culture concerning energy, the environment, and society? It enrolls twenty-four of the nation s top experts working on energy policy in industry, government laboratories, utilities, nonprofit organizations, and universities to debunk and contextualize thirteen energy myths relating to electric power, renewable energy, energy efficiency, transportation, and climate change.

While the book focuses on the American experience, it will be of interest to those working in the fields of energy policy, energy and the environment, and technology assessment worldwide.

The American Basketball Association (1967-1976) gave birth to Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Bob Costas, the Indiana Pacers, the San Antonio Spurs, the Slam Dunk contest, flashy moves, and the three-point basket. During its nine seasons, the ABA generated scorn and laughter--and made a lasting impact on how the game is played. 24 pages of photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon, Pair This Book Up With "Going Long".......2007-06-13

If Amazon was really on the ball, they would pair this book together with "Going Long," the book about the old AFL - both are entertaining, hilarious at times, and just great reads - you start to see a connection between the leagues in a way, the startup antics, the dubious franchises, and the hilarious happenings. If you are a sports fan or not, you have to get this book - it is hilarious and an absolute joy to read!

                  5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!.......2007-04-23

I rank this book right up there with "The Bronx Zoo" and "Thin Ice - A Season in Hell with the NY Rangers." It is a captivating book that is very difficult to put down once you begin reading it. A++++!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great read.......2007-02-27

If you were a fan of the ABA growing up this is the book for you. For some reason I just loved the ABA. To read about the beginning of the league and all the trials and tribulations the league went through is funny. Players I remember as a kid come to life. The Doctor, Lou Dampier, Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore, Laverne Tart. They are all here. The only challenge is that the book is narrated by many former participants and at times it is hard to remember who each person was. However, this is a minor criticism. This was a great book to read and brought back a lot of memories.

5 out of 5 stars The Original Dr. Dunkensteins.......2006-11-18

Before 24-hour sports coverage on cable TV and back in the day when a basketball fan was lucky to get one nationally-televised NBA game per week, there was an upstart league with a flashy basketball, flashier players and paychecks that oftentimes bounced higher than the ball.

Terry Pluto, a long-time sports columnist for the Akron Beacon-Journal, captures the crazy times and legendary personalities on the court and in the front offices in this oral history of the American Basketball Association.

It was a league that hit the NBA where it was most vulnerable; signing players to contracts that were unheard of at the time. For example, Mel Daniels - a number one draft pick in both leagues - opted to play in the ABA and became one of the all-time greats. There were renegades like Rick Barry and the sky-walking dunks of "Dr. J," Julius Erving, arguably the greatest player of his era.

The league went straight to the heart of the NBA for its first commissioner, hiring George Mikan as a means to gain credibility in the eyes of the stodgy national sports media. Larry Brown and Doug Moe were ABA players before becoming pro coaches. And - if nothing else - who could beat franchise names like the New Orleans Buccaneers, Minnesota Muskies, the Spirits of St. Louis and the San Diego Conquistadors (with Wilt Chamberlain as player/coach)?

Though the final few years of operation - with a merger inevitable and the league consolidating its shrinking resources - became an abrupt climax to the ABA, the teams and players that made the jump to the NBA made for a dramatic leap in the quality of the game & it can be argued set the pace for the style and grace of Magic, Michael, Dominique and LeBron.

                  5 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 stars?.......2006-01-30

The ABA. Dr. J., McGinnis, Bad News Barnes, Moses and even Wilt! The ABA came along before ESPN, at a time when even the NBA was barely televised. This league was fantastic and Pluto tells a very detailed account of the history and stars of the ABA.
For the sake of nostalgia alone, I loved this book. Where else could I read about Randy Denton and the Memphis Tams/Sounds?
From an historical perspective, this is a great read about a very unappreciated, overlooked league. This is where Dr. J and David Thompson really mastered the art of dunking.
Even from a business or marketing view, this book proves itself to be quite insightful. For instance, the NBA adopted the 3 point shot after the merger, to increase the excitement of the game.
Pluto accomplishes quite a lot in this book, without ever getting boring. Every basketball fan should read this book.

Here's what you probably know about Jayson Williams: as of 2000, he has been in the NBA for 10 years, played in one all-star game, is one of the league's best rebounders, and has a seven-year, $100 million contract. He also has a reputation as a loudmouth with an attitude problem.

Here's what you probably don't know: he comes from a mixed-race family, lost two of his sisters to AIDS, adopted their children, and became a grandfather at 28, plus he calls his mom and dad a few times every day. Here's another thing you might not know about him: he's funny.

Williams shows off his sense of humor in Loose Balls, an irreverent look at life in the NBA. His style is conversational and snappy, with short vignettes strung together into brief, loosely themed chapters. One chapter, "What's Young & Skinny & Can Do a 580-Degree-Double-Pump-Backward Jam but Doesn't Know How to Shoot a Jump Shot or Set a Back-Side Pick? Meet the Future of the NBA" is all of eight pages long. However, by the end of the book Williams has dished the dirt on dozens of his colleagues--who is the biggest flopper (Rodman, of course), who is the worst trash talker (Gary Payton), and who is the dirtiest player (not John Stockton, but his tight shorts are a problem: "Someone should tell the man the ABA days are over.").

Williams also offers observations on coaches, refs, cheerleaders, and fans across the NBA--as well as events from his childhood, early career, and well-publicized days as a wild man. Williams's candor and charm are apparent throughout the book, as is his love of basketball. Hoops fans will love this book. --M. Stein

                  Book Description

The first candid report from a land of fragile egos, available women, unexpected tenderness, intramural fistfights, colossal partying, bizarre humor, inconceivable riches, and desperate competition, Loose Balls does for roundball what Ball Four did for hardball. From revelations about the meanest, softest, and smelliest players in the league, to Williams’s early days as a “young man with a lot of money and not a lot of sense,” to his strong and powerful views on race, privilege, and giving back, Loose Balls is a basketball book unlike any other.

No inspirational pieties or chest-thumping boasting here—instead, Jayson Williams gives us the real insider tales of refs, groupies, coaches, entourages, and all the superstars, bench warmers, journeymen, clowns, and other performers in the rarefied circus that is professional basketball.

                  5 out of 5 stars Ironic & quite poetic.......2006-06-15

This book is just an okay read ... nothing great, but not bad either. I've already read more than my fair share of NBA sports books, so the tales of casual sex, egomaniacal exploits, drugs and this insatiable feeling of invincibility that colors so many of today's pro athletes is nothing fresh and new.

I think the fact that this book came out in 2000 and just a matter of months later, Jayson Williams experienced that "fateful" day in history when living life on the edge and a bit recklessly caught up to him.

I gave this book 5-stars only because given the context of what went down & because of the context of the tales of this book which I'm sure were written to be humorous -- that combination makes this package quite gripping.

It's like was there/is there any doubt life would catch up to Mr. Williams?

I'm not at all calling Jayson a bad person. But, in the end, we all get our just desserts for the life decisions we make.

This book foreshadows the fall of a semi-celebrity who scaled the heights of NBA stardom and faded into relative obscurity.

                  1 out of 5 stars If this guy wasn't 7 feet tall...........2003-01-08

....he'd be flipping burgers. Like Charles Barkley (who -- big surprise -- is one of his best buddies), Jayson Williams is a self-important blowhard who uses his status as a minor celebrity as a platform to dispense his childish anecdotes and mind-numbing personal opinions. Here's an example of his brilliant insight: if you turn out the lights, any woman can be Cindy Crawford. Wow! Thanks for the tip, Jayson!

5 out of 5 stars I canýt wait for his memoirs about prison life!.......2002-08-20

I can't wait for Jayson Williams' to describe his prison sentence, from his takes on soap on a rope, to prison food; it will be a laugh riot.

Seriously, this book provides insight to Williams' personal and professional life, along with life in the NBA. This book is full of one to two page stories concerning a wide range of stories, from truly touching, to laugh out loud.

One story describes how he was about to kill the murderer of his two sisters, only to let him go. Another story tells how he was so drunk, he woke in Phoenix thinking that he was in New York after a bomb blast. When meeting the GM of the Suns for the first time, he asked if he could call his Mom to see if she was alright, in which afterwards he was promptly traded.

This book is full of very interesting tales that turn this into a great page-turner. This is truly one of the greatest sports books of all time. He doesn't glorify or vilify anyone, he just tells it how it is.

If he comes out with another book, I'll be the first one to pick it up at the store. You can drive, while I'll take shotgun (get it?).

This is the ultimate book for anyone who likes sports.

                  4 out of 5 stars Not quite a three-pointer, but still a passing effort.......2002-06-30

Morbid curiosity led me to the pages of Jayson Williams's autobiography/NBA primer. The former pro star's current legal matters made me want to know the man behind the sports/news headlines.

The author/basketball player details many anecdotes contrasting growing up in the rural South and the urban Mid-Atlantic. His tales of his years in the NBA are reflective and very revealing as he tells about fellow well-known icons of the sport from Michael Jordan to Phil Jackson to Charles Barkley. Williams pulls no punches in describing what really makes up life in the NBA, from rookie to established star.

The book is chocked full of fights, contract negotiations, fights, character analyses, fights, extravagant expenditures, rowdy fans, fights, parties, practice sessions, grandmotherly interventions, championship games, and fights.

                  Oh, did I say "fights"?

The book is a simple read and should satisfy the fan and non-fan alike.

The one part of the work that stands out in light of Williams's current situation comes at the end of the segment entitled "Never Trouble Trouble". The author states in this section that he avoids trouble on the road by staying in his hotel room.

He writes: "Now if people want to get wild and throw a party, get crazy, they have to come do it at my house. I'm not always an angel. But if I'm a devil at home, no one gets hurt."

I'm sure that the author now regrets those particular words.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, light read for any basketball fan.......2002-04-03

I think most any NBA fan or casual follower will find this book entertaining. And it's certainly interesting now, given the trouble Jayson's in for some of the same kind of wild behavior he talks about in the book. It's hard to think of him as anything other than a fun loving guy who (allegedly) caused a horrible accident through wreckless actions. In the book he talks about partying at his home so no one gets in trouble or fights.

The anecdotes in the book are usually funny and offer a close and lighthearted insight into a lot of things big time basketball players encounter. My instinct is that there's a lot of exaggeration in the stories, but I suspect they're generally true. Jay comes across as a good guy, as you'd expect, and he seems to be genuinely thankful for his family and his talent. It's hard to not like him and it's easy to enjoy this book. Not great literature by any means, but a fun, light read.

                  5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book, a sports classic.......2004-12-10

This is one of the best books ever written about sports. An oral history of the American Basketball Association, it is spare in style, which is a good thing because Pluto - a talented writer as he's proven in other sports books - lets his sources tell most of the story. His genius is in the reporting, finding all these people and getting them to tell him (and us) their stories. The ABA was a product of its times and those times will never come again. Even now, that period is becoming just a distant memory. But this is an important part of basketball history and, even better, a great, great group of stories and personalities.

5 out of 5 stars The only book needed for the ABA.......2000-07-07

Great information about the good, the bad and the ugly of the ABA. Shows how the pro basketball turned from a stodgey, center oriented game, to the game of Michael, Magic and Kobe.

4 out of 5 stars A great book if you loved the ABA!.......1999-06-18

I very much enjoyed this book, as it brought back a multitude of memories. I lived in Colorado and during my middle school and high school years, I followed the Denver Rockets/Nuggets. They were my team, and this book caused me to wax nostalgia. The book is filled mostly with quotes from those most closely involved with the ABA. The black-and-white photos were also great reminders. Terry Pluto's writing and summations are a quick read. The book gave me the feeling the ABA is still highly regarded and fondly remembered, red, white and blue ball, etc., etc.,. Fun and nostalgic as far as I was concerned.
